The Secret Life of Meryl Streep

She has been separated from her husband for six years.

by Anonymousreply 602October 28, 2023 9:22 PM

She has slept with costars while married

by Anonymousreply 1October 21, 2023 6:14 AM

And just when I thought that this would be one of the few marriages that would last.

by Anonymousreply 2October 21, 2023 6:15 AM

How much money does he get?

by Anonymousreply 3October 21, 2023 6:16 AM

I have a wet, ravenous pussy, and it needs licking and dicking!

by Anonymousreply 4October 21, 2023 6:16 AM

I’m surprised no one knew about it. There was a recent blind item that may fit but I am too lazy to find it.

by Anonymousreply 5October 21, 2023 6:17 AM

Jada Pinkett walked so that Meryl could run.

by Anonymousreply 6October 21, 2023 6:19 AM

Is this something straight people do? Be separated for six years?

by Anonymousreply 7October 21, 2023 6:19 AM

I would have divorced her after seeing those daughters she produced.

by Anonymousreply 9October 21, 2023 6:19 AM

by Anonymousreply 10October 21, 2023 6:21 AM

M. is such a slut.

by Anonymousreply 11October 21, 2023 6:23 AM

I hope Meryl gets a good attorney because she is rich and he is not.

by Anonymousreply 12October 21, 2023 6:25 AM

Sometimes when you reach your 60s and 70s, you ask yourself if this is really the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. Sometimes the answer is "no".

by Anonymousreply 13October 21, 2023 6:26 AM

he always seemed to be an accessory she wore to all the many award shows she attended

by Anonymousreply 14October 21, 2023 6:37 AM

no wonder she’s always at the baths

by Anonymousreply 15October 21, 2023 6:40 AM

People drift apart but I wonder if they were actually living apart for six years. Hopefully she will talk about it someday.

by Anonymousreply 16October 21, 2023 6:45 AM

I'm surprised they lasted so long. Don Gummer was pretty much the rebound.

Previously, Streep had been actor John Cazale's live-in girlfriend. She even nursed him in his final days.

Then six months later, she married Gummer out of nowhere.

by Anonymousreply 17October 21, 2023 6:47 AM

all those accents- he’s probably resting in Bellevue

by Anonymousreply 18October 21, 2023 6:48 AM

Nancy Reagan has nothing on Meryl's blowjob skills.

by Anonymousreply 19October 21, 2023 6:49 AM

She may have kept the split quiet in order to maintain her family image.

by Anonymousreply 20October 21, 2023 6:49 AM

I don't get why people who are married that long suddenly get divorced in their twilight years. It never gets better from what I have seen. They remain "friends" but really just a shell of what they had. When you are with someone that long they become a part of you. More so than even the family you grew up with because the time is longer. Seems like it's more about ego than anything else.

by Anonymousreply 21October 21, 2023 6:51 AM

She’s chubby.

by Anonymousreply 22October 21, 2023 6:54 AM

Meh. Husbands come and go but nominations are here forever.

by Anonymousreply 23October 21, 2023 6:56 AM

The other scoop here is that her son is married with 2 children. He lived such a quiet secretive life I swore he was gay.

by Anonymousreply 24October 21, 2023 6:57 AM

At her age, she may as well be happy. She has all that money and probably still needs a big D on the regular.

by Anonymousreply 25October 21, 2023 6:58 AM

Meryl loves to fuck. Four kids is a lot for a career gal, even in the '80s.

by Anonymousreply 26October 21, 2023 7:00 AM

Heavens! At least Gilded Age Season 2 starts next Sunday.

by Anonymousreply 27October 21, 2023 7:02 AM

I think it’s pretty brave of older people to get divorced. It’s sadder when people stay together out of fear of the unknown.

In this case, Meryl can definitely afford to be single, so what’s the problem.

by Anonymousreply 28October 21, 2023 7:02 AM

He often didn't accompany her to the Oscars. Usually only when she stood a chance of winning.

yes r43 but in later years he often didn't come. That was early in her career. She'd bring a daughter for some of her lesser nominations as she got older.

by Anonymousreply 33October 21, 2023 7:10 AM

Meryl, try some black sizemeat! I have a feeling you'd like it.

by Anonymousreply 39October 21, 2023 7:20 AM

Yes r37. It is the more recent years that he didn't attend. Actually the middle years. He came with her for The Iron Lady when she stood a chance of winning and he was there the year of the La La Land debacle but in the early aughts and 90s he sometimes skipped them.

by Anonymousreply 40October 21, 2023 7:22 AM

I’ve been separated from Bill 15 years, open secret.

by Anonymousreply 47October 21, 2023 10:30 AM

He’s a sculptor. I’m married to a sculptor. It ain’t easy. Add acting into that & it’s a miracle they lasted as long as they did. Seems like they split when their youngest was 23 or 24. Get the youngest established post college & then build separate lives. Not all that rare.

by Anonymousreply 48October 21, 2023 11:25 AM

If I was almost 75, and didn’t know how much time I had left and the person I was with, wasn’t the person I wanted to end my life with, I’d walk out too,

by Anonymousreply 51October 21, 2023 11:34 AM

by Anonymousreply 54October 21, 2023 11:46 AM

They be stone cold to your face. Steely-eyed. Like you were putty in their hands. Always putting themselves on a pedastal.

by Anonymousreply 57October 21, 2023 12:22 PM

Big Deal. She's been separated from reality for much longer than that.

by Anonymousreply 58October 21, 2023 12:24 PM

This really lends credence to the belief that once the kids are grown and out of the house, the marriage is kaput. Being Mr. Meryl Streep for decades probably wore him down also. He seems pretty mild mannered and was willing to tolerate her ambition of being THE actress of her generation, but who knows. It still always fascinates me what ends to 40-50 year marriages, and if there’s a final straw, or it’s a culmination of things.

by Anonymousreply 59October 21, 2023 12:27 PM

Meryl was perturbed by Don's excessive rewatching of her falling down the stairs in "Death Becomes Her".

by Anonymousreply 60October 21, 2023 12:33 PM

Divorcing? I thought the article just said they're living a sperate lives marriage.

Those do exist.

by Anonymousreply 61October 21, 2023 12:43 PM

R48 here. I don’t give my self permission to generalize very often, but I t’s been my experience that most artists are inherently selfish. They kind of have to be. They’ve got this thing in their head that needs to be expressed & released. It’s often obsessive. And my artist suffers from anxiety, which is hard for both of us. So while I have no doubt I’m the most important person in the world to my husband, I’m not first. His work is. I struggled with that for a long time. Then I realized it gave me space too. Freed me from expectation. If we had children together I’m not sure we would’ve made it for 25 years. I would’ve been overwhelmed with resentment. Sunday in the Park with George makes some really great points about this kind of life.

by Anonymousreply 62October 21, 2023 12:44 PM

She’s been separated for six years and playing the same character in movies for 45.

by Anonymousreply 63October 21, 2023 12:45 PM

It's pretty common especially where families are kid focused. Once the kids grow up and out mom and dad realize they just don't have that much in common. Most stay together for financial reasons, but if you can afford separate lives while still remaining a friendly family, go for it

by Anonymousreply 64October 21, 2023 12:47 PM

R59 you know Meryl only averaged one movie per year while raising her kids? She could have done much more work, including theatre, but put her family first. She also accepted so ho-hum roles due to the convenient shooting schedule or how close they were to home.

Don pretty much sculpted and golfed as his main interests, don't say he sacrificed for her ambition

by Anonymousreply 65October 21, 2023 1:00 PM

Meryl should really write her memoirs, she's led an interesting life

by Anonymousreply 66October 21, 2023 1:11 PM

R65 I’m not saying he sacrificed anything. Even during times when Meryl worked less, she was still hell bent on her career and snowballing her way to 1000 Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. Yeah I believe she didn’t neglect her kids, but she knew exactly what she doing. She turned her back on the theater a long time ago because frankly she doesn’t want to put in the work, and enjoys the relative ease of doing film and tv. He knew what she was trying to accomplish. All I’m saying is it possibly wore him down over the years, which would be one contributing thing to the breakdown of the marriage. They’ve lived happy, privileged lives and she has been the main bread winner. He seemed fine with it for decades but maybe just had enough from an ego standpoint.

by Anonymousreply 67October 21, 2023 1:18 PM

Tell me about it.

by Anonymousreply 68October 21, 2023 1:23 PM

R44- Who's the PUSSYHOUND on the right in that video still?

by Anonymousreply 69October 21, 2023 1:24 PM

I thought the next big news would be his passing and widowhood for Meryl. Never imagined they'd split. Anyway the seemed to have a good marriage for many years given how much she credits him for their life together. Especially surprising since, as someone pointed out, he was pretty much a quick rebound after losing Cazale

by Anonymousreply 70October 21, 2023 1:24 PM

Meryl looking good, has left the grey hair behind too

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 71October 21, 2023 1:26 PM

R70- I'm not confident her marriage to Cazale would have been long lasting given the fact that he did not seem particularly heterosexual.

by Anonymousreply 72October 21, 2023 1:27 PM

I don't get that they're estranged, I get the impression they live apart. But they seem comfortable and loving towards one another. So what? They have always lived separate lives in terms of their careers and interests. Yet they continue to support and respect and care about one another. There's no acrimony. They're both artists. His work is solitary, and requires focus and concentration. Her art is collaborative and demands an entirely different approach. I would safely bet that there are a lot of successful relationships that require "space."

by Anonymousreply 73October 21, 2023 1:33 PM

R72 no idea if they would or not but he died while they were apparently still very in love so it never got a chance to tarnish.

I always kinda thought she didn't talk much about Cazale out of respect to Don. I know she's not been silent on him but not very vocal. She also corrected a common claim they were engaged, which I respected for honesty

by Anonymousreply 74October 21, 2023 1:35 PM

"I have a wet, ravenous pussy, and it needs licking and dicking! —Meryl"

#metoo!

by Anonymousreply 75October 21, 2023 2:39 PM

While she certainly had affairs with co-stars and probably others over the years, I’m guessing he’s the one that broke it up and probably developed a relationship with a woman friend who finally paid attention to him in and out of bed. It can’t be easy for a man with an artist’s ego to come last after your wife’s brilliant career and your four kids. Especially when rumors float back that she screwing Jack Nicholson or whomever. It eats away at a guy. I’m sure they felt like they were on the same page in the beginning but then it very much became about her and her work. He wants his life to be about him for a change.

by Anonymousreply 76October 21, 2023 2:40 PM

R76 are you the idiot from the other thread? What evidence is there that she ever cheated? If she was sleeping with her co-stars wouldn't at least one of them have hinted at it?

by Anonymousreply 77October 21, 2023 2:43 PM

Why is it so impossible that the co-stars were discreet, R77?

by Anonymousreply 78October 21, 2023 3:16 PM

R78 because if your assertion is to be believed she must have had over 20 lovers, some of whom could have done with a little publicity over the years..

by Anonymousreply 79October 21, 2023 3:19 PM

R79, I think it's naive that someone who is rich and famous (and who has people constantly telling her how wonderful she is) would be so virtuous that they would never stray in a 45 year long marriage. That's really hard to believe.

by Anonymousreply 80October 21, 2023 3:30 PM

She’s eating out Tracey Ullman’s snatch.

by Anonymousreply 81October 21, 2023 3:33 PM

What if he’s fucking someone else? What if they’re abusive? What if they want to marry someone else? There are good reasons to divorce someone regardless of age.

by Anonymousreply 82October 21, 2023 3:37 PM

I hope he doesn't get half her money. California has plenty of nutty laws.

by Anonymousreply 83October 21, 2023 3:39 PM

I doubt old Don would be after her money.

by Anonymousreply 84October 21, 2023 3:41 PM

Do we know who she was dating during the separation?

by Anonymousreply 85October 21, 2023 3:41 PM

It’s been long held/rumored she fucked or tried to fuck a majority of her male leads. The reason she hated Charles Dance (Plenty) was because he WOULDN’T fuck her.

Also they don’t live in California, they’re in Connecticut.

by Anonymousreply 86October 21, 2023 3:41 PM

R83- They don't live in California. They live in the state of New York which is NOT a community property state.

by Anonymousreply 87October 21, 2023 3:47 PM

I thought she sold her house in Connecticut, R86.

by Anonymousreply 88October 21, 2023 3:50 PM

No. Charles Dance was an asshole to everyone . Sex had nothing to do with it.

by Anonymousreply 89October 21, 2023 3:51 PM

Meryl and Kevin Costner would be a cute couple.

by Anonymousreply 90October 21, 2023 3:53 PM

[quote]Meryl should really write her memoirs, she's led an interesting life

I suspect she’s pretty boring off-camera. She seems like the type that tries to lead a relatively normal day-to-day life. But, she stays out of the spotlight, so maybe she does have a lot of secrets.

by Anonymousreply 91October 21, 2023 3:56 PM

She apparently had an affair with Jack Nicholson during production of Ironweed. A crew member on it told me that one day Nicholson walked on set in a slightly inebriated state just to watch Streep do a bit by herself on camera. He sat at video village next to the director and several producers.. At one point he threw back his head and bellowed “I’M FINALLY FUCKING SOMEONE WITH TALENT!” Poor Anjelica.

by Anonymousreply 92October 21, 2023 3:59 PM

R83 Community Property laws are neither nutty nor unique to California. Don’t type like an ignoramus.

by Anonymousreply 93October 21, 2023 4:06 PM

Someone tweeted fairly recently that they were at an event and wearing a Dog Day Afternoon t-shirt with Cazale on it and Meryl walked by stopped and said, "That's my man" pointing to Cazale. I thought that was a strange thing to do (the person didn't know her) but now less so.

by Anonymousreply 94October 21, 2023 4:07 PM

[quote]R83 Community Property laws are neither nutty nor unique to California. Don’t type like an ignoramus.

Yes, R93. I think it would be very nutty and extremely unfair if Streep's ex got half of the money she has worked decades to accumulate. I wonder how much money he makes annually. I'm sure it's considerably less than her.

by Anonymousreply 95October 21, 2023 4:12 PM

Nobody gives a fuck about some no-name sculpture. Everyone knows she only married him because her true love, John Cazale, died young.

by Anonymousreply 96October 21, 2023 4:14 PM

R95…so you double down on your ignorance of the law. Thanks for playing. You get a street copy of the DVD of Ironweed as your parting gift.

by Anonymousreply 97October 21, 2023 4:25 PM

I actually think a memoir from Streep would be great, but about her movies and years in show business from her perspective, from beginning to present. She’s been iconic for so long and her take in show business is always interesting.

by Anonymousreply 98October 21, 2023 4:28 PM

Looking up nutty in my legal dictionary.

Another one of those fabulous only in 2023 posts.

by Anonymousreply 110October 21, 2023 5:13 PM

I don't have time to read the linked article, or this thread. Someone just tell me - which one pulled the plug?

by Anonymousreply 111October 21, 2023 5:15 PM

A "small world" factoid: Grace Gummer was - very briefly - married to Tay Strathairn, son of Streep's RIVER WILD co-star David Strathairn.

The marriage lasted all of 45 days. Tay Strathairn, a musician, also composed and played with Streep's son Henry Wolfe for a while.

There must have been some major drama during that time.

by Anonymousreply 112October 21, 2023 5:20 PM

I'm guessing that her income & celebrity status provided him the opportunity to be a sculptor who actually sold sculptures. Without her or someone like her, he would've been living in a studio apartment, buying $0.69 ramen, like Michael Musto.

She probably was responsible for the kids, even if she delegated to nannies.

Clint Eastwood movie sets (Bridges of Madison County) are good for getting home in time for dinner w/family. I don't fault her for not wanting to do projects that took her away from home at night.

She wanted to have it all: the career, the husband, the children. She had it for a good, long while.

by Anonymousreply 113October 21, 2023 5:20 PM

[quote]Sometimes when you reach your 60s and 70s, you ask yourself if this is really the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. Sometimes the answer is "no".

This is like when the press announced that Sam Shepard and Jessica Lange had separated, but it turned out they had split several years prior (around the time she had broken her shoulder and collar bone after a "fall"). She had put up with his shit for years, but waited until her 60s to decide "Um, no. I can't do this anymore."

by Anonymousreply 114October 21, 2023 5:21 PM

What r78 said.

As a working actor, If I had sex with Streep while we worked on project, I'd keep that to myself, too. Given her clout and respect in "the industry", if I blabbed, I'd be putting my career at risk.

by Anonymousreply 115October 21, 2023 5:26 PM

I kinda like some of his sculptures. They aren't earth shattering but some of them are quite interesting.

by Anonymousreply 116October 21, 2023 5:45 PM

Didn’t Jada announce she and will Smith have been separated for 7 years? It’s probably a business decision to defer a divorce.

by Anonymousreply 117October 21, 2023 5:45 PM

Honestly it's pretty common for people to drift apart after 40-50 years. They either learn to co-function and become good friends with their own interests, or they break up.

by Anonymousreply 118October 21, 2023 5:47 PM

Glenn should court him just to piss her off.

by Anonymousreply 119October 21, 2023 5:48 PM

I don't think Meryl's personal life is all that interesting. She's intelligent and grounded. Movie set flings happen *all* the time. Not really a scandal anymore.

by Anonymousreply 123October 21, 2023 6:26 PM

To the pillory with Meryl!

by Anonymousreply 124October 21, 2023 6:41 PM

Meryl has been riding Pete Davidson's BWC for the last few months, of course. It was bound to happen.

[quote] She does seem like one of the few big celebrities who successfully managed all that. It’s interesting that she mostly lived in Connecticut, not Hollywood.

I think that's the key - not living in LA. Sissy Spacek lives elsewhere. Jennifer Garner really made me sick with all her church-going pap strolls. Pathetic.

by Anonymousreply 130October 21, 2023 6:56 PM

@r128, " It’s interesting that she mostly lived in Connecticut, not Hollywood. "

That is the key, right there. Raising a family away from the Hollywood spotlight is probably the best thing she could have done for her marriage and kids. We talk in another thread about the insufferable Goop and her brat monster daughter, but none of that nepo-baby garbage coming from the Gummer household. I always got the impression that Streep thought of her career as nothing more than a job she was very good at. She could have been a well paid CEO of a major corporation and no one would be interested in her life. I truly believe that's how she sees herself. She puts in the work necessary and then the rest of her time is hers

by Anonymousreply 131October 21, 2023 7:11 PM

Jodie Foster was born and raised in LA and has resided there all of her life, even raised her children there, and they turned out fine.

by Anonymousreply 132October 21, 2023 7:15 PM

Except for that kooky uncle Mel Gibson they had to deal with.

Remember that blind item/reveal that Meryl had an affair with Idris Elba?

by Anonymousreply 133October 21, 2023 7:21 PM

R121, oh, I understood them. That was a concise way of saying your hyperbolic thesis of speculation sounds like a bunch of bullshit. I just took the express route, right over your head.

by Anonymousreply 134October 21, 2023 7:23 PM

[quote] When you are with someone that long they become a part of you.

Sometimes when you're with someone that long you lose 1/2 of yourself in them.

by Anonymousreply 135October 21, 2023 7:30 PM

[quote] I don't get why people who are married that long suddenly get divorced in their twilight years. It never gets better from what I have seen. They remain "friends" but really just a shell of what they had. When you are with someone that long they become a part of you. More so than even the family you grew up with because the time is longer. Seems like it's more about ego than anything else.

I think that's just looking from your lens. If you value being partnered above all else, then an older, divorced person appears bereft and lacking. Meanwhile, that older, divorced person may feel free and unshackled.

by Anonymousreply 136October 21, 2023 7:39 PM

Meryl was definitely shtupping Ed Begley, Jr. during “She-Devil.”

by Anonymousreply 137October 21, 2023 7:46 PM

Maybe, and I’m making this up, the decision to live in CT was his. I’d imagine artists want to be near NYC. I don’t even know why I’m contributing this inane comment.

by Anonymousreply 138October 21, 2023 7:52 PM

R138 that was never disclosed, they are private about their lives. They lived in LA in the early 90s so Meryl would have an easier time finding roles but they didn't like it and soon moved back East.

by Anonymousreply 139October 21, 2023 7:55 PM

Mamma Mia was filmed on a Greek island. For the most part anyway. I have no idea of a time line for filming a movie like that. But I'm guessing they were there for a good while. The whole cast loved it. Maybe he went with her for that.

by Anonymousreply 140October 21, 2023 8:00 PM

She's from New Jersey, I'm sure she's very happy living in the east. Now, at this age, I'm sure the west coast has more appeal.

The latest Murder in the Building was taped in NYC. I can't decide if I liked her in that or not. But I love her in almost everything she does.

I don't imagine she was screwing Steve Martin or Martin Short.

[quote]I don't imagine she was screwing Steve Martin or Martin Short.

Well, certainly not both at once.

by Anonymousreply 143October 21, 2023 8:09 PM

I really liked her in Only Murders. And I usually groan when she shows up as a guest star, like in Big Little Lies.

BLIND ITEM!

This permanent A-list actress and her husband are due to announce they've called it quits, after a Hollywood rarity, a seemingly long and successful marriage. However, our sources tell us they actually went their separate ways years ago but just forgot to tell anyone!

The real scandal is the reason why they split. It turns out the non-famous but recognisable husband fell for someone else, a fairly well-known A/B list actress. After years of living in his ultra-successful wife he decided to pitch his star to someone less successful and recognisable.

Now, these actresses are considered 'friends' in public, however, there has never been any real love lost between them as the A/B list actress has undeniably resented the success of her more illustrious colleague. This has apparently led to plenty of insider fallout and while the lovebirds didn't mean for their liaison to cause so much damage, they felt their attraction just undeniable.

But with all things, there is a price. Several years ago the A/B list actress was tipped for Hollywood's biggest prize, but shockingly suffered a humiliating loss no one saw coming. Apart from our A-lister that is. You see, thanks to this new information, things are now falling into place within the community, with many finally concluding that the permanent A-lister used her considerable influence to ensure her love rival lost!

An anonymous unverified source who worked closely with A/B at the time added that the A-lister took it one step further by sending her rival a deliciously catty note the morning after her loss which said "You might have my husband but you will never have an Oscar. Commiserations." Mamma Mia!

by Anonymousreply 149October 21, 2023 8:42 PM

She's marrying Will Ferrell.

by Anonymousreply 150October 21, 2023 8:42 PM

Michelle Pfeiffer and David E Kelley left Hollywood for their kids and raised them in another part of California. Their kids are apparently wonderful, grown adults. Hollywood is really no place for kids. Michelle and David moved back after their kids left home.

by Anonymousreply 151October 21, 2023 8:44 PM

[quote] She's from New Jersey, I'm sure she's very happy living in the east.

Brad Pitt is from Missouri. I don't think he'll ever move back.

by Anonymousreply 152October 21, 2023 8:46 PM

^ No, but the Pitts have a huge family compound there and they all spend a lot of time together as neighbors

by Anonymousreply 153October 21, 2023 8:48 PM

That’s quite a blind item, R 149, and I believe every word of it. When actor Benjamin Walker was married to one of Streep’s daughters, he fell in love with another woman and unceremoniously divorced Streep Jr. Meryl did all she could to halt and sabotage the guy’s career and she largely succeeded.

by Anonymousreply 154October 21, 2023 8:50 PM

Wasn’t Anjelica Huston also married to a sculptor up until his death a number of years ago? His stuff looked ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 162October 21, 2023 8:58 PM

So who do we think the Other Woman the A/B Oscar losing actress is? Rooney Mara? Michelle Williams? Naomi Watts?

by Anonymousreply 163October 21, 2023 8:59 PM

She mostly lived in the Village and in Tribeca.

by Anonymousreply 164October 21, 2023 9:02 PM

R149 Jessica Lange!

by Anonymousreply 165October 21, 2023 9:03 PM

R155 that’s idiocy. Robert Graham was ten times the artist. He left some indelible landmarks. Just to name two: the Male & Female figures from the 1984 LA Games and the main entrance to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

by Anonymousreply 166October 21, 2023 9:07 PM

I think community property laws are very fair. It only includes wealth formed during the marriage or, at least that's how I understand it. If you already own a big company or were already a major established actor, you would get a prenuptial. If you build a big business or become very successful during the marriage, I would have to assume that the other partner gave up something to be part of the marriage. Women commonly forgo education and career so that they can take care of the family. They should be entitled to half of the wealth accumulated during the marriage when the husband "upgrades" and I'm a big believer in "what's good for the goose, is good for the gander". That also includes situations when there are 2 geese or 2 ganders.

Was there really a blind item though?

by Anonymousreply 170October 21, 2023 9:39 PM

R170 there was a blindsided item!

by Anonymousreply 171October 21, 2023 9:41 PM

Meryl actually looks really good in the photo at OP, the photo on the right. Surprised no one's commented on it, yet.

by Anonymousreply 172October 21, 2023 9:41 PM

This is from the right wing CDAN so take it with a grain of salt:

It is not any kind of coincidence that this permanent A+ list actress split with her husband at the same time all the information about the disgraced producer was being revealed. The actress was a HUGE supporter of the producer and knew what he was doing.

by Anonymousreply 173October 21, 2023 9:46 PM

by Anonymousreply 175October 21, 2023 9:49 PM

r77 Leslie Phillips who was her costar in Out of Africa, hinted about Meryl and Robert Redford in an interview years ago.

by Anonymousreply 176October 21, 2023 9:49 PM

R176 he was on set for a handful of days out of 6 months

by Anonymousreply 177October 21, 2023 9:56 PM

by Anonymousreply 178October 21, 2023 9:57 PM

r177 I'm not saying I believe it but I do recall Leslie Phillips saying it in a BBC Radio interview or segments around the year 2000. He alluded to them being exceptionally friendly together but it wasn't really picked up by anyone.

by Anonymousreply 179October 21, 2023 10:10 PM

by Anonymousreply 185October 21, 2023 10:37 PM

I can’t imagine Don and Glenn together. This doesn’t seem like Glenn’s style to move in on a peer’s husband.

by Anonymousreply 186October 21, 2023 10:37 PM

R185 apparently he roughed up Jessica pretty good right before she called it quits. Plus he was probably an alcoholic which didn’t help matters.

by Anonymousreply 187October 21, 2023 10:39 PM

I'm sorry guys, I was just jesting with that item. Earlier in this thread people suggesting Glenn should move in for the kill with Don inspired me to get writing, I hope it gave some of you a chuckle X

by Anonymousreply 188October 21, 2023 10:40 PM

Benjamin Walker is one of those actors who's effective onstage but has no real screen presence. Streep wouldn't need to sabotage his career. After ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER flopped badly, he wasn't going anywhere anyway. He usually does supporting roles and seems to do OK with that.

The Grace Gummer/Tay Strathairn situation sounds like a real shit show. I have to wonder if Streep had a hand in busting that up or if the two of them woke up one morning and said "We did What???"..

by Anonymousreply 189October 21, 2023 11:00 PM

Well this thread is almost at 200 and no one has suggested that one, or both, will be coming out of the closet?!

by Anonymousreply 190October 21, 2023 11:03 PM

[quote]and while the lovebirds didn't mean for their liaison to cause so much damage, they felt their attraction just undeniable.

by Anonymousreply 195October 21, 2023 11:15 PM

I told this story way back when and no one believed it, so I'll tell it again so everyone can disbelieve it on another thread. A good friend is Meryl's neighbor in Pasadena. She was having a dinner party and invited him. He arrived early and happened upon La Streep vacuuming. She had her hair in a ponytail and my friend told her that he'd finish vacuuming and to get upstairs and do her hair. They both had a laugh and he indeed finished and Meryl descended the staircase like Norma Desmond (he didn't say that but I figured I might as well say it). At any rate, I don't recall him saying if her husband was there. This was just after the pandemic.

I think she might split her time between the East Coast and Pasadena but she's also in the final stages of building a huge house on her lot, in addition to the house she was living in. I got the feeling the big house would go to one of her kids.

by Anonymousreply 196October 21, 2023 11:19 PM

Does she hang with Kate Lawrence?

by Anonymousreply 197October 21, 2023 11:31 PM

So did she fuck the friend or what R196?

by Anonymousreply 198October 21, 2023 11:54 PM

Didn't Glen Close sell her house in Connecticut?

by Anonymousreply 199October 22, 2023 12:03 AM

by Anonymousreply 200October 22, 2023 12:05 AM

by Anonymousreply 205October 22, 2023 12:12 AM

I know people want to blame Harvey on someone or something, but I doubt Meryl "knew" the details of his behavior.

Did she hear rumors or rumblings? I imagine so, as did Judi Dench and others. But I doubt she knew the depths of some of his behavior.

Most of us feel confident about speaking out or expressing concern only if we see it with our own eyes or it happens TO us.

by Anonymousreply 206October 22, 2023 12:15 AM

Who's BigHorny Beaver? Sigourney?

by Anonymousreply 207October 22, 2023 12:50 AM

Has anyone other than Meryl actually described him as a sculptor? Does he actually have a profile of his own? Does he show work beyond like playdoh ashtrays?

He’s not exactly Anish Kapoor or Anthony Gormley, is he?

by Anonymousreply 208October 22, 2023 1:09 AM

by Anonymousreply 213October 22, 2023 2:57 AM

Didn't Meryl Streep get more political in 2017, her Golden Globe acceptance speech etc? If they separated that year 6 years ago as indicated perhaps that was in some way a factor? Not necessarily political differences but maybe arguments were caused if Don felt she was unnecessarily and deliberately courting controversy?

by Anonymousreply 214October 22, 2023 3:05 AM

by Anonymousreply 219October 22, 2023 4:09 AM

I wonder if Streep had Sexual Intercourse with her co star in Out Of Africa- Robert Redford. He still had some looks in ca. 1984. He was such a mediocre actor that his character who was supposed to be British spoke with an American accent- LAME.

by Anonymousreply 220October 22, 2023 4:31 AM

Makes you appreciate open, honest, real-time "conscious uncoupling."

by Anonymousreply 221October 22, 2023 4:33 AM

Sam Shepard is not a wife beater, at least not with Jessica. Much like Meryl and this sculptor guy, they started living apart years before public splitting, in the early 2000s. The incident everybody talks about as the alleged beat down or whatever happened in 2009, they announced a split in 2011. Both were raging alcoholics though.

by Anonymousreply 222October 22, 2023 5:04 AM

Actors all have an understanding in their marriage. Why I never understood why Julia Roberts is always slut shamed on DL. They all do this.

by Anonymousreply 223October 22, 2023 5:09 AM

R214 not really, she was always active for a cause and the Gummers are low-key donators to many liberal orgs. I doubt Don's politics are much different from Meryl.

I don't think her GG speech was a problem, she felt compelled to talk about Trump and the media as this was the last huge platform where she'd get the chance at that time, given that she was a guaranteed speaker.

by Anonymousreply 224October 22, 2023 6:27 AM

I have to give Meryl credit…

She’s done such a good job of keeping her private life private, nobody gives a fuck about her husband or children.

by Anonymousreply 237October 22, 2023 9:55 AM

I remember Meryl commenting one time about being unpopular or shunned in Hollywood for having 4 children. Not sure how serious she was being. I think she was well into her 40s with the last pregnancy. 4 kids probably is not very "green" for the liberal set in Hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 238October 22, 2023 10:04 AM

I'm with R237. I don't think Meryl's ever paraded her children out for paps or made her marriage to Gummer something to shine a hot bright light on. Since she hasn't presented herself as the wonderful wife and mother, who adores her husband, if they separated six years ago, who cares?

It's their relationship, if they're comfortable with it, fine.

Since August: Osage County (movie) was brought-up, I'll seize yet another moment to bitch about it.

I HATED that movie, the characters (except Chris Cooper's). the so called "story". Was Benedict Cumberbatch's character supposed to be mentally deficient?

I'd have walked out if I hadn't been with somebody else.

A:OC was one of the worst 2 hours I've ever spent at the cinema, and I write this as somebody who can enjoy a bad movie.

And, worst of all, the pretentious air of "See How Important This Movie Is?" coming from the direction and cast was insufferable.

by Anonymousreply 247October 22, 2023 5:20 PM

The whole thing was one of the most dimly lit, sour, hopeless, joyless movies I've ever seen. I don't know why they made it, let alone anybody bothered to see it. Kind of Steel Magnolias meets Six Feet Under.

by Anonymousreply 248October 22, 2023 5:23 PM

Exactly, r248.

And yeah, I get it. Julia Roberts character had to finally get away from Poisonous Mom. What that movie put us through to get there, however, weighed a lot heavier than that.

I don't understand why they got a TV guy to direct the film of August: Osage County. The whole thing was such a misfire that it really damaged the reputation of the play. When the play first debuted, some hailed it as a successor to O'Neill—but now I think the general consensus it that it's at best a well-written soap opera.

by Anonymousreply 250October 22, 2023 5:42 PM

Agree. And I don’t blame Meryl for the adaptation, I blame John Wells. It’s unfortunate he bought the rights. But any film adaptation may have exposed that it was better as a theater piece.

by Anonymousreply 251October 22, 2023 5:57 PM

I enjoyed A:OC- for the laffs.

by Anonymousreply 252October 22, 2023 6:31 PM

Will you guys eat your fucking catfish and bring the thread back to topic?

by Anonymousreply 253October 22, 2023 8:02 PM

I’ve read through all 253 posts and have some thoughts.

Meryl has had excellent surgery. Fantastic. Very natural.

I find the Gummer sisters creepy in how much they resemble each other.

I can’t stand Tracy Ullman. I did not know she and Meryl were buds.

by Anonymousreply 254October 22, 2023 8:32 PM

It's TRACEY Ullman, you fat whore!

by Anonymousreply 255October 22, 2023 9:07 PM

I'm surprised Meryl didn't try to keep those talentless daughters off the screen. She seemed like she would have more respect for the art of acting.

by Anonymousreply 256October 22, 2023 9:22 PM

R256 she said she tried to discourage them but respected that each person has to make their own choices and lead their life

[quote]she said she tried to discourage them but respected that each *Nepo Baby* has to make their own choices and lead their life

by Anonymousreply 258October 22, 2023 10:06 PM

The worst of her talentless brats has to be Louisa Jacobson. Even Hellen Keller knows there’s no way on Earth that talentless cunt would be on The Gilded Age if her mother wasn’t the Meryl Streep.

by Anonymousreply 259October 22, 2023 10:09 PM

Poor Meryl has had a couple of rough years. No Oscar nominations since 2017, didn’t get the Emmy for Big Little Lies, and now this sad news.

by Anonymousreply 260October 22, 2023 10:10 PM

R250: The problem was that horse faced bitch who played my daughter. Everybody’s performance suffers when they’re acting with her.

by Anonymousreply 261October 22, 2023 10:12 PM

Streep just did that great part on Only Murders in the Building. She’ll probably be nominated for that.

She can work for as long as she wants.

by Anonymousreply 262October 23, 2023 12:11 AM

R228 you forgot to mention Don't Look Up, The Prom, Little Women, Florence Foster Jenkins, Into the Woods, The Giver, A Prairie Home Companion, The Manchurian Candidate (2004), Music of the Heart, Dancing at Lughnasa, One True Thing, Marvin's Room, Before and After, Still of the Night and Falling in Love.

Grounds for divorce

by Anonymousreply 263October 23, 2023 12:30 AM

She's been in a ton of movies. Can't say she doesn't put in the work.

by Anonymousreply 264October 23, 2023 12:42 AM

Ricki and the Flash would have been sufficient grounds for divorce, Don.

We're siding with you. Free Don and his sizemeat!

by Anonymousreply 265October 23, 2023 12:45 AM

I would've liked to see Estelle Parsons in the AOC movie version.

by Anonymousreply 266October 23, 2023 12:54 AM

You would have been the only person in the theater. ^^

by Anonymousreply 267October 23, 2023 12:58 AM

Estelle Parsons is 95.

You bitches are too much.

by Anonymousreply 268October 23, 2023 1:00 AM

R250, that's not true. Even Charles Isherwood, AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY's highest-profile supporter at the time, wrote: "Mr. Letts is as yet more a skillful entertainer than a true visionary or a dramatic poet. AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY is a ripsnorter full of blistering, funny dialogue, acid-etched characterizations and scenes of no-holds-barred emotional combat, but I would not say it possesses the penetrating truth or the revelatory originality of a fully achieved work of art."

That's from his original review of it in Chicago. When he re-reviewed it on B'way, he wrote, "The play has the zip and zingy humor of classic television situation comedy and the absorbing narrative propulsion of a juicy soap opera too . . . Watching it is like sitting at home on a rainy night, greedily devouring 2, 3, 4 episodes of your favorite series in a row on DVR or DVD. You will leave the Imperial Theater emotionally wrung out and exhausted from laughing, but you may still find yourself hungry for more."

by Anonymousreply 269October 23, 2023 1:02 AM

The Roberts character in AOC was the only one that seemed to be living on earth while the others were like in some circus act where every one was trying to one up the other. Just in small subtle gestures and moments of non drama looks to one side she acted Streep under the table.

by Anonymousreply 270October 23, 2023 1:07 AM

Will one of the Gummer girls break ranks and write an "M Dearest" tell-all?

by Anonymousreply 271October 23, 2023 3:30 AM

Was this announced now in order to publicize season 2 of The Gilded Age?

by Anonymousreply 272October 23, 2023 3:33 AM

[Quote] She's been in a ton of movies. Can't say she doesn't put in the work.

a load of pretentious, boring, forgettable crap that few people saw or would ever watch again.

A Cry in the Dark, Adaptation, The Devil Wears Prada, Doubt and The Deer Hunter are basically the sole exceptions.

by Anonymousreply 273October 23, 2023 3:41 AM

Kramer Versus Kramer was a big hit.

by Anonymousreply 274October 23, 2023 3:42 AM

(^.^) And a big bore It's flat. Hoffman and his son act like they've never been introduced even though they've been living together for 8 years. Hoffman's character never heard of nannies apparently even though they were everywhere in the 70s and 80s on the UES and UWS.

Streep also has

Sophie’s Choice

Death Becomes Her

Defending Your Life

Silkwood

Postcards From The Edge

I can’t imagine the movies without her.

by Anonymousreply 276October 23, 2023 4:53 AM

And Angels in America

by Anonymousreply 277October 23, 2023 4:54 AM

She has the best resume of women her age. G is the only other one still doing good work. Most of the rest of her generation (except for Lange in other mediums) have been reduced to schlock (Keaton, Spacek, Sarandon, Field, Cher)

by Anonymousreply 278October 23, 2023 4:57 AM

Sophie's Choice and Silkwood are overrated with Sophie's Choice being unwatchable.

Variety Sophie's Choice is a handsome, doggedly faithful and astoundingly tedious adaptation of William Styron's best-seller.

by Anonymousreply 279October 23, 2023 5:00 AM

Agree. She has her share of duds, but that’s also true of Katharine Hepburn and Bette Davis.

by Anonymousreply 280October 23, 2023 5:00 AM

And I was agreeing with R278

by Anonymousreply 281October 23, 2023 5:02 AM

Chicago ReaderDave Kehr-

Little remains in this true-life story of a nuclear worker's mysterious death other than some prefab antinuke, profeminist rhetoric - soft-pedaled, thankfully, but still strong enough to testify to the basic smugness of the project.

by Anonymousreply 282October 23, 2023 5:03 AM

Dave Kehr is a moron. Silkwood is a fantastic film and holds up.

by Anonymousreply 283October 23, 2023 5:38 AM

R6 that's the funniest fucking DL one liner in a LONG time.

Well done.

by Anonymousreply 284October 23, 2023 5:50 AM

[Quote] Silkwood is a fantastic film and holds up.

the film is a whitewashed account of Karen Silkwood. And with the exception of the scrub down scenes it's dreary. The hard partying Karen died in a single car accident sans Amazing Grace and had alcohol and sedatives in her system. The scenes of her domestic life like the film are pointless.

by Anonymousreply 285October 23, 2023 5:59 AM

A private investigator working for the union found dents on the back of her car that suggested she could have been pushed off the road. An autopsy, however, revealed traces of alcohol and prescription sedatives in her blood. Police concluded that she had fallen asleep at the wheel, and her death was ruled an accident. The circumstances surrounding the crash were nonetheless so bizarre that they made national news. For one thing, Silkwood had been exposed to so much radiation poisoning that cancer was essentially guaranteed, according to a doctor who testified in the case.

But how the plutonium got into her system — including her lungs and her digestive tract — was as mysterious as the cause of the crash. Not only had she recently set off plant monitors that tested for radioactivity — and been scrubbed clean — but plutonium contamination had been found in her apartment as well: in her kitchen, her bathroom and in a bologna-and-cheese sandwich in her refrigerator, according to a 1979 TIME report.

Well, Jada always said her dream was to be the “black Meryl Streep”.

Given her abilities as an actress, being a bearding wife to a gay man is the closest Jada will ever get to realizing that dream.

by Anonymousreply 287October 23, 2023 6:04 AM

David Sterritt of The Christian Science Monitor called the film "a fine example of Hollywood's love-hate attitude toward timely and controversial subject matter." He continued, "The movie sides with Silkwood as a character, playing up her spunk and courage while casting wry, sidelong glances at her failings. When it comes to the issues connected with her, though, the filmmakers slip and slide around, providing an escape hatch ... for every position and opinion they offer. This makes the movie less polemical than it might have been, and a lot more wishy-washy ...

by Anonymousreply 288October 23, 2023 6:15 AM

Among her 21 Oscar nominations are several that don't seem particularly deserving. The Deer Hunter, One True Thing, Music of the Heart, Into the Woods, Julie and Julia, August:O-A and Florence Foster Jenkins.

by Anonymousreply 289October 23, 2023 6:29 AM

WTF The Deer Hunter

That nomination was fully deserved. It would have been no surprise if she had won.

by Anonymousreply 290October 23, 2023 6:43 AM

I can see someone else, besides Meryl, in Postcards from the Edge. I think Meryl was miscast in that movie.

by Anonymousreply 291October 23, 2023 6:43 AM

She was R291. Yet it's one of her more watchable films. She seems too mature for the part and doesn't seem like a party girl.

by Anonymousreply 292October 23, 2023 6:46 AM

^and every other movie she managed to get. That woman’s Hello Kitty must be deeper than the lines on Kate Moss’ coffee table.

by Anonymousreply 293October 23, 2023 6:47 AM

[Quote] WTF The Deer Hunter That nomination was fully deserved. It would have been no surprise if she had won.

Streep is the only significant female part in the film though ultimately, she has little to do, and her part is pretty standard. Maureen Stapleton and Geraldine Page both in Interiors, Dyan Cannon in Heaven can Wait and Mona Washbourne for Stevie gave more memorable performances in the supporting category that year.

by Anonymousreply 294October 23, 2023 6:55 AM

she radiates the homefront tension of the Vietnam War very well. Sometimes underplaying with intensity adds to the movie greatly.

by Anonymousreply 295October 23, 2023 7:18 AM

But it doesn't make it Oscar-worthy.

by Anonymousreply 296October 23, 2023 7:53 AM

Not reading all the posts. How long would she and John Cazale have lasted had he lived? They were a beautiful couple.

by Anonymousreply 297October 23, 2023 8:02 AM

It was a wasted opportunity from the breaking headline. The world's best actress and the world's most famous actress finally in a film together. And it didn't work because Meryl tried to show off.

by Anonymousreply 298October 23, 2023 9:14 AM

Not that we have any right to know-- she's made such efforts to keep her private life private, while still respecting her role as a public figure, being an engaging interview subject, etc.-- but it really is a fascinating story, all the more because of the few pieces of knowledge that have been made public over the years. It seems clear now that, sadly, John Cazale probably was *the* love of her life, and Don was the ruggedly handsome, stable man in the right place at the right time that could give Meryl the family she wanted. Now that the youngest is in her 20s, established and out of the house, she can say she checked all the boxes, did the right thing by her children, and feel free to move on with her life. She's had a number of pithy one-off quotes about married life-- "The secret to a long, successful marriage is having separate bathrooms,"-- that sound more like something from a New Yorker cartoon than anything that gives an authentic glimpse at her actual experience. From everything we know about her, she seems like a good old gal who loves sex as much as intellectual stimulation. I hope she gets it, and I hope that her marriage wasn't a total sham because that's a long time for two people to be together for convenience sake alone.

by Anonymousreply 299October 23, 2023 2:37 PM

^ I don't think it was a sham at all. People marry for many different reasons. I don't think Meryl Streep could be Meryl Streep without the anchor and stability that a husband and kids gave her out side of Hollywood. Now, 40+ years latter her/his needs have changed which doesn't take away from what they had it just moves it to a different level

by Anonymousreply 300October 23, 2023 3:13 PM

I don't think their marriage was a sham. They were together for a long time and seemed genuinely in love with children and now grandchildren. We also don't know any details. For example, maybe the separation started as a trial separation but didn't work out. I also can't see them fighting over money, etc., but again, we don't know any details.

It's always interesting to me how gay men dissect her career, as if it was the longstanding middle east conflict. No other actor draws that kind of interest, passion, arguing, defense, etc. Ultimately, she has good films and bad films like any other actor with a long career. They all end up with certain films that endure and others that people skip. I give her credit for drawing such interest for almost 50 years (1977 to 2023).

by Anonymousreply 301October 23, 2023 3:17 PM

And it's not like there have been all that many good films made in the past 15 years. A girl's gotta eat.

by Anonymousreply 302October 23, 2023 3:33 PM

R302 If you compare her Rotten Tomatoes page to that of her peers, Meryl's last 15 years have been pretty well received. Diane Keaton has one "fresh" rated movie since the 90s.

by Anonymousreply 303October 23, 2023 3:40 PM

I wasn't singling Meryl out for making bad films. I was speaking of the film business in general. It's not like she's had a cornucopia of quakity laid at her feet.

by Anonymousreply 304October 23, 2023 3:42 PM

Sorry R302 I get you now. Yes I would struggle to name many outstanding movies made in the last 20 years that will be classics for future generations

by Anonymousreply 305October 23, 2023 3:49 PM

The key to her success is that she stayed away from the Hollywood scene and never developed any substance abuse issues. There are plenty of examples of people who may have had similar levels of talent but completely derail their careers due to addiction.

by Anonymousreply 306October 23, 2023 3:54 PM

[Quote] she radiates the homefront tension of the Vietnam War very well. Sometimes underplaying with intensity adds to the movie greatly

her role in Deer Hunter is basically -'meanwhile back at the ranch'

by Anonymousreply 307October 23, 2023 4:25 PM

The only Oscar nod I felt she didn't need to have was "Music Of The Heart". While she was very good as always and learned to play violin credibly gor the role, the movie was over-long tv-movie-of-the-week material.

by Anonymousreply 308October 23, 2023 4:36 PM

[quote] she radiates the homefront tension of the Vietnam War very well.

by Anonymousreply 309October 23, 2023 4:41 PM

R276 I think Debra Winger would have been a better choice for Silkwood and Postcards from the Edge.

by Anonymousreply 310October 23, 2023 4:42 PM

R298: It didn’t work but that shouldn’t suggest there weren’t moments of sheer joy. For example, I got nominated in lead and she had to go over to supporting.

by Anonymousreply 311October 23, 2023 4:45 PM

R301, that was a fair and well reasoned post.

Are you really sure you should be here?

by Anonymousreply 312October 23, 2023 4:59 PM

No problem, R305. You are 100% correct that Meryl has been able to largely avoid the dreck that gets laid at the feet of other respected actresses her age. Diane Keaton has become the female DeNiro in that she'll do any piece of shit if they throw enough money at her. The only difference is DeNiro has better friends in Hollywood and nthey throw him a bone every once in a while with a halfway decent role.

But I don't think we'll ever see Meryl do something like Book Club or 80 for Brady.

by Anonymousreply 313October 23, 2023 5:11 PM

R273 If you've been in 5 great films out of 95 you made, you can rest assured you've had a brilliant career. Incidentally, the other 90 were not crap either.

by Anonymousreply 314October 23, 2023 5:12 PM

When I left for college, my parents went to separate bedrooms. Eventually that turned into separate houses. They had a shitty marriage, but a wonderful separation. They never divorced, they just lived different lives and became better friends when they weren't under the same roof. Because they never divorced, it kept paperwork, taxes and finances simple. I think more married couples should try that instead of outright divorce. You might like it.

by Anonymousreply 315October 23, 2023 5:16 PM

R276, I agree with you that Winger shoukd have been cast in Silkwood rather than Meryl. Meryl was totally miscast in Silkwood because Mike Nichols had blinders on when it came to her. He also miscast her in Heartburn and Postcards from the Edge. She wasn’t credible as either an Upper West Side Jewish mom in Heartburn or a Southern California girl in Postcards. I think Geena Davis could have been good in Postcards. Winger would never have been cast in Postcards opposite Shirley Maclaine in another film after Terms of Endearment.

by Anonymousreply 316October 23, 2023 5:24 PM

[quote] I think Debra Winger would have been a better choice for Postcards from the Edge.

Debra would have brought her own coke.

by Anonymousreply 317October 23, 2023 5:25 PM

R316 Meryl was perfectly fine in Silkwood, Postcards and Heartburn. Your scrutinous complaints say more about you than about her performances.

by Anonymousreply 318October 23, 2023 5:43 PM

This is a throwback to Old Hollywood gossip. Hope it makes the cover of magazines. More of this and less of the Kardashians!

by Anonymousreply 319October 23, 2023 5:46 PM

[Quote] Incidentally, the other 90 were not crap either.

R314 How would categorize Still of the Night, Plenty, Out of Africa, The French Lieutenant's Woman, August: Osage County, Marvin's Room, The Prom, Let Them All Talk, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, The River Wild, The House of Spirits, She-Devil, falling in Love, Suffragette, Ticki and the Flash, The Giver, The Iron lady, Julie and Julia, Lions for Lambs. A Prairie Home Companion, The Hours, Music of the Heart, One True Thing, Before and After, Dancing at Lunacy . . .?

by Anonymousreply 320October 23, 2023 6:04 PM

There's no way Mike Nichols would have put up with Winger's craziness for SILKWOOD, though I would agree she fits the role more naturally.

I always thought Stockard Channing would have been much better as the lead in HEARTBURN, but she wasn't a star and Streep was.

by Anonymousreply 321October 23, 2023 6:05 PM

[quote] Mary.

Mary Louise, to be more specific.

by Anonymousreply 322October 23, 2023 6:11 PM

R320 I would categorize them as some better some worse but none of them crap.

by Anonymousreply 323October 23, 2023 6:30 PM

The problem with Heartburn & Postcards is the script. Meryl is responsible for making these films watchable, such as they are. She is innately watchable. I thought she was terrific in Silkwood, it's still an engaging film.

by Anonymousreply 324October 23, 2023 6:35 PM

this is a great example of how celebrity journalism works...Its largely a show. Im sure she's been asked tons of questions in past six years about the success of her long marriage. And meanwhile both of them have probably been dating other people for years now. But as long as she didn't talk about their separation in the press and as long as she didn't show up to awards shows with her new boyfriend, the press lets her do her thing. But most likely scenario is There was probably a story about to drop, most likely about her, and another guy.

by Anonymousreply 325October 23, 2023 6:45 PM

What guy?

by Anonymousreply 326October 23, 2023 7:06 PM

^ Dustin Hoffman 🙄

by Anonymousreply 327October 23, 2023 7:10 PM

are you sure she's still interested in sex?

by Anonymousreply 328October 23, 2023 7:12 PM

She and Ed Begley Jr definitely had a thing - there were many rumors for years about that - and she was with Redford during Out of Africa and Nicholson during/after Ironweed. More shockingly, the rumors included a brief fling with De Niro early on, which would be surprising considering he was best buds with Cazale.

The real passionate onset affair though was supposedly with Clint Eastwood when they did Bridges of Madison County. That actually got fairly serious, and caused drama when broken off.

by Anonymousreply 329October 23, 2023 7:21 PM

In other words, she is a rampant whore!

by Anonymousreply 330October 23, 2023 7:28 PM

Debra Winger is just as talented, but she didn’t get any of Meryl’s roles because she’s a crazy, psychotic cunt who nobody could tolerate for more than one hour.

by Anonymousreply 331October 23, 2023 7:36 PM

by Anonymousreply 332October 23, 2023 7:38 PM

*of men

by Anonymousreply 333October 23, 2023 7:39 PM

I find it very hard to believe a woman so dedicated to her craft and the privacy of her family would risk it all by carrying on one affair after another over a period of decades. Any number of people would have broken the story to knock her off her pedestal, had it been true.

by Anonymousreply 334October 23, 2023 7:41 PM

R334, you are so fucking naive and stupid LOL

by Anonymousreply 335October 23, 2023 7:44 PM

R335 pleasure talking to ya!

by Anonymousreply 336October 23, 2023 7:47 PM

De Niro and Begley remain close friends and colleagues of hers after many years, they would not squeal about it. Redford was married with children in the mid-80s, he's not going to kiss-and-tell either. Eastwood has supposedly managed to keep several high-profile dalliances under cover, for privacy; he allegedly had a long time fling with radical activist Angela Davis 50 years ago, without barely an official word, so you know he can keep things locked down. I'm certain there were others in his case.

Eastwood is over 90, Redford in his 80s and the rest headed in that direction. I imagine as some of these very famous iconic people pass away, more details about their personal interactions will be available.

by Anonymousreply 337October 23, 2023 7:59 PM

It's not exactly a rarity that actors end up fucking their costars. I've done a lot of backstage theater work (and a wee bit of TV & film work) and it happened a lot. Sometimes it's kept quiet, but more often than not the spouse knows and just chalks it up to "antics on the set." Sort of the "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" vibe......

Usually between male/female actors but I've known a fair number of men who were/are or appear to be happily married, but when they did a gay play and/or had passionate scenes with their male costar, they indeed fucked around with their male costar(s).

This arrangement only generally ends in tears if those affairs result in a divorce or breakup to pursue the newly formed relationship, because then those costars generally find out that the versions of themselves that fell in love were the ones involved in that movie/play/TV show and existed only on those sets, because those pairings only rarely survive being transplanted to the harsh light of day.

Meryl and Clint surprises me, mostly because Clint is such a puckered asshole and seems like the opposite of anyone Meryl might appreciate. But I never saw the film, so I can't speak to their chemistry.

by Anonymousreply 340October 23, 2023 8:20 PM

Postcards really needed someone like Melanie Griffith. Meryl wasn’t really believable as an addict.

Heartburn worked better as a book than it did on screen. It was more acidic on the page.

by Anonymousreply 341October 23, 2023 8:23 PM

Heartburn was pointless and Nicholson and Streep didn't convince as a couple; the script was flimsy

The New Yorker Pauline Kael

The film is rich in fillips--smart little taps and strokes. But after a while you start asking yourself, what is this movie about? (You're still asking when it's over.)

by Anonymousreply 342October 23, 2023 8:29 PM

Oh fuck off you moaning bastards."Meryl was miscast!" "It should have been X instead".

Don't know how Streep cheating with Redford when her husband and kids were living on location with her? With Madison County they were done filming by 5 everyday and she was going home to her family. You people would believe anything, so long as it's negative.

by Anonymousreply 343October 23, 2023 8:30 PM

Melanie Griffith?!? Good God, no. That baby voice... *shudder*

by Anonymousreply 344October 23, 2023 8:30 PM

by Anonymousreply 345October 23, 2023 8:49 PM

by Anonymousreply 346October 23, 2023 8:52 PM

most of the time, their partners/wives put up with these affairs coz they enjoy the lifestyle these cheating cunts provide. The cheating cunts do whatever the fuck they want. It happens in real life every where...not just in hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 347October 23, 2023 8:54 PM

R167, Meryl married Don Gummer in 1978. I seriously doubt she got a pre-nup because they weren't popular back then and she probably didn't have much money back then. I don't understand how her husband contributed to her success as an actress. When her career took off, she probably subsidized her husband's quality of life. No way is Gummer entitled to half her earnings over the past 45 years. He did nothing to deserve it.

Anyways, everyone says they don't live in California.

She also said there was a blind item last year that said Streep was dating a farmer.

I wonder how Streep reacted when Nichols fired Mandy Patinkin after one day on Heartburn and replaced him with Jack Nicholson.

R353, from what I understand, she was a-okay with it, since Patinkin was giving her acting notes...

Meryl probably just gets into character so much that she falls for the male lead. That doesn't disappear when the director says "cut". She likely sees it as the artistic process. Then when it's all over she went home and played the housewife/mom role. Life is one performance after another for these people. It reminds me of what Amy Poehler said hosting the Golden Globes... "Meryl Streep is not here tonight, she has the flu... and I hear she's amazing in it".

[quote] I think Geena Davis could have been good in Postcards. Winger would never have been cast in Postcards opposite Shirley Maclaine in another film after Terms of Endearment.

No, I don't think Geena Davis would've been good in Postcards. Too perky and chirpy. Plus, not a good physical match with Shirley MacLaine.

Annette Bening, who was actually in the movie, already, would've been a believable daughter (physically) to Shirley MacLaine. And I really can't stand Annette Bening, ever since I saw her on The Grifters.

Melanie Griffith is a good idea. Definitely believable as someone with a drug problem.

Sissy Spacek? Possibly. She's never played a role like the one in Postcards. But she might have been able to pull it off. Plus, she can sing (the characters sings) and she is plausibly Shirley MacLaine's daughter.

According to the book "Her Again" which is a pretty complete bio Streep didn't have an affair with Nicholson it was more like he was obsessed with bedding her and she did all she could to stop it.

During Heartburn he was eventually banned from her hotel floor. Then in Ironweed he invited her to a cast dinner at Chasten's and when she got there she was the only person invited. He then talked about his "date" with her.

Julia's affrairs with Dermot Mulroney, Jason Patric, Daniel Day Lewis and Denzel Washington among others have always been scrutinized and Meryl has just as many and has never been called out.

by Anonymousreply 390October 25, 2023 4:44 AM

This idea of Meryl as some sex obsessed middle aged woman is hard to believe. She had four kids and probably no sex drive left.

She seems more like the perfectionistic type who'd be locked in her hotel room going over every inflection and gesture a million times while her co-stars were banging a prop girl.

by Anonymousreply 391October 25, 2023 4:47 AM

Julia’s affairs were in the tabloids. Streep was married early in her career and there was never any suggestion her marriage was in trouble until recently, 45 years later. Julia was a proud home wrecker.

by Anonymousreply 392October 25, 2023 5:02 AM

Roberts has done nothing that any other male movie star has ever done. But because she's a woman she was attacked.

by Anonymousreply 393October 25, 2023 5:09 AM

by Anonymousreply 394October 25, 2023 5:53 AM

She married him less than 6 months after meeting him.

And despite no evidence apart from a couple of cheap gossip pieces, people accuse Streep of shagging all her leading men. If you could name one credible source please feel free. Like R391 said, she is more likely to be concentrating on her work or looking after her brood.

by Anonymousreply 395October 25, 2023 10:31 AM

The most interesting thing Streep has ever done is drag Madonna when Streep wasn’t chosen to play Evita.

Streep said something along the lines of, “But, I can sing!”

Years later they were seated together at some awards show and shown be friendly so they got over it.

by Anonymousreply 396October 25, 2023 11:18 AM

" said something along the lines of, “But, I can sing!” "

To which Madonna replied : And I can act.

by Anonymousreply 397October 25, 2023 11:21 AM

I don't think the Madonna quote is real. Meryl was going to star in Evita directed by Oliver Stone around 1989 but dropped out due to exhaustion, but more likely a disagreement over salary. Streep probably did some roles just to keep the family finances up.

Madonna wasn't cast til years later when Meryl was aged out.

Meryl also said as much as she loved her family she also needed a creative outlet and to work on occasion too.

by Anonymousreply 398October 25, 2023 12:08 PM

[quote]She seems more like the perfectionistic type who'd be locked in her hotel room going over every inflection and gesture a million times while her co-stars were banging a prop girl.

For some reason, Meryl doesn’t seem to me like a Barbra-level perfectionist type. Not to say she doesn’t prepare, but I get the sense that acting comes naturally to her and she just gets in the role and lets it happen. I’m sure directors give her a lot of freedom to improvise and play it how she wants.

R395 a million years ago I saw MS and Ed Begley JR in Soho. He was buying her flowers and they were laughing and having a great time. Maybe just pals hanging around but that wasn’t the vibe. Also MS seemed another person from the serious actress type she usually is. More like a light hearted former cheerleader type.

by Anonymousreply 401October 25, 2023 1:26 PM

r21 if you're sick of someone, you're sick of em. People on the outside see the benefits of campanionship. The people in the relationship see it like a prison cellmate. Their annoying habits, selfish conversation, flatulence, eating habits, smell, tone, music habits, TV habits, driving skills, and arguments over parking is enough to say fuck it. Maybe they want peace in their final years. If you already love your home when your partner is gone more then when they are there, then the relationship is dying or dead.

If you're rich, you can stay together and make it work but why bother. Divorce is a true freedom. Separation works but it's complicated.

[quote] If you're rich, you can stay together and make it work but why bother. Divorce is a true freedom. Separation works but it's complicated.

R402, I agree with the first part of your post, but disagree with this. Rich people are the ones who can afford to get divorced. Middle class people are the ones whose lifestyles will take a hit after a divorce.

Streep always seemed like she was a cheerleader in high school, IMO. She has an ease to her personality that comes from being popular when young. (Weird, but Rosie O'Donnell was homecoming queen - what happened?)

by Anonymousreply 406October 25, 2023 4:19 PM

Streep appeared to become more comfortable being famous over time and really more at ease. I'd say from the 2000s onwards she treated interviews & speeches like they were meant to be entertaining too and was comfortable making fun of herself and her reputation

by Anonymousreply 407October 25, 2023 4:29 PM

If Cher can have her fresh bagels, why can’t Meryl get her morning farmer’s delivery?

by Anonymousreply 408October 25, 2023 4:42 PM

I get the impression that Streep can be a bit lazy with acting at times. She spoke of how when she was with Cazale he would challenge her to move past her original choices and try different things. She has a wonderful ear which goes a long way with accents, etc. and terrific timing and delivery, but I've never found her choices to be particularly surprising or original, say like a Debra Winger (who conversely doesn't have the ear, timing or delivery of Streep).

by Anonymousreply 409October 25, 2023 4:42 PM

R406, O’Donnell could only be voted the high school homecoming queen in a place like Commack because that shithole on Long Island is notorious for its population mostly consisting of working class Irish-Americans.

R399 Barbra is not just perfectionistic, she's a total control freak. Meryl seems to be intuitively excellent at what she does. She also has a reputation for being a very considerate collaborator in her films, getting along with everyone and being quite undemanding of others.

by Anonymousreply 426October 25, 2023 9:26 PM

IMO, the reason no one can find someone to have sex with could be - expectations. Everybody wants a partner who is a a cut above themselves. It's really only DL queens that care about most of the films in Meryl's CV. Most of her contemporaries all have better track records - Sigourney Weaver is immortal because of Alien and Ghostbusters. Hell, Sissy Spacek's one role as Carrie will be better remembered than all of Streep's films combined.

You cannot compare her to Hepburn or Davis or whoever because while those women had their duds, they have CLASSICS ingrained in American cultural fabric.

by Anonymousreply 453October 27, 2023 2:10 PM

What, R453!? The Deer Hunter, Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie's Choice, Out of Africa and The Hours are all excellent movies and they're not obscure.

Yes, R453. Ghostbusters will be studied in film history classes for centuries to come 🙄. It's a classic of America cinema.

by Anonymousreply 454October 27, 2023 2:24 PM

R454, say what you will about Ghostbusters but it was a historical moment film that is still remembered today. Of the films you listed, only The Deer Hunter would be considered a classic, with Sophie remembered solely for Meryl's performance. The other three are middlebrow melodramas which is fine for what it is, but not exactly transcendent cinema.

by Anonymousreply 455October 27, 2023 3:14 PM

"The Hours" was based on a Pulitzer Prize winning novel and the film had nine Academy Award nominations. Love your dismissive attitude. I really like "Carrie" but I doubt it made it to Sight and Sound's "100 Best Film of All Time". It's not a profound art film though it's much better than your average horror movie.

by Anonymousreply 457October 27, 2023 3:29 PM

R453 Meryl's status as "greatest living actress" or whatever is proven by your logic. Her popularity and the respect she receives for her craft are all the more impressive if they stand out continuously in one sub-part film after another. A good film is a collaborative effort, but a good performance is (more or less) an actor's responsibility alone.

THIS BITCH KNEW!

by Anonymousreply 459October 27, 2023 4:24 PM

R453 R455 is just determined to twist everything to fit the narrative that Meryl isn't an acting legend. Whatever.

And Rose McGowan is an attention-seeking proven liar. Why not claim that Judi Dench, Helen Mirren and other stars who worked with Harvey knew too. No, Rose just chose the biggest name and probably the person she's most jealous of.

R455, here, I think Meryl is a great actress, but well-played with the ad hominen attack R461, I was just stating that I don't think the films listed are particularly memorable outside of The Deer Hunter and her performance--which has achieved legendary status--in Sophie's Choice. Well done for appealing to the Academy Awards as a significant barometer of quality and enduring legacy, though...

by Anonymousreply 462October 27, 2023 5:23 PM

R462 you're the one who thinks Hepburn is a legend. That dear would be a footnote to acting if she hadn't inexplicably won 4 Oscars

Ad hominem? No.

by Anonymousreply 464October 27, 2023 5:35 PM

Well, R462, not every film can be a profound work of art like Alien, Carrie and Ghostbusters. So insightful about the human condition.

Just because these films are probably still remembered doesn't mean they're in the top tier of world cinema. It may just mean that they're excellent entertainment.

by Anonymousreply 465October 27, 2023 5:35 PM

by Anonymousreply 466October 27, 2023 5:35 PM

No offense to the old stars but Meryl is probably the only actress over 70 that kids are aware of, thanks to the likes of The Devil Wears Prada, Into The Woods and Don't Look Up.

by Anonymousreply 467October 27, 2023 5:41 PM

She seems even more popular now than she ever was before.

by Anonymousreply 468October 27, 2023 5:43 PM

Really? "The kids" were big Don't Look Up fans?

by Anonymousreply 469October 27, 2023 5:43 PM

Yes R469 it broke records for streaming on Netflix and was a huge hit with their younger demographics.

Death Becomes Her was in the top 10 most watched for ages when it was on streaming.

Into The Woods is apparently widely watched in schools even though it was a letdown.

by Anonymousreply 470October 27, 2023 5:46 PM

Yeah, R453 was 100% wrong but he refuses to admit it. Sad.

by Anonymousreply 471October 27, 2023 5:48 PM

I'm not the poster upthread but I underestimated the popularity of her output as well.

I suspect Meryl's movies appeal more to gay men and women and Sigourney's movies appeal more to straight men.

Yet no one talks about it and the reviews were largely negative and it seems forgotten now.. Amy Schumer hosting the Oscars the year DLU was a best picture nominee quipped Oscar voters apparently don't look up reviews. I don't think Meryl was the reason why DL, Into the Woods or Death Becomes Her are/were popular. BTW just because a lot of people watched DLU doesn't mean they liked it.

by Anonymousreply 475October 27, 2023 6:03 PM

Yes well, we all know Meryl isn't an action movie star and doesn't do superhero movies.

by Anonymousreply 476October 27, 2023 6:05 PM

R475 doesn't mean they didn't like it either, does it you titwank? I personally thought it was much better than the reviews suggest, and that many film critics were biased as it lampooned dumbass American media.

Death Becomes Her would be nothing without Meryl's campy turn as Madeline Ashton. You are stretching, aren't you?

And I didn't know tubby Amy made that jibe. Lol what a twat

by Anonymousreply 477October 27, 2023 6:08 PM

Nobody gave a shit about Don't Look Up. Netflix numbers don't mean anything towards quality or longevity. You know what else got crazy viewing numbers on Netflix? This piece of shit, which was one of the worst reviewed films of last year.

DLU Has a 49 Metascore on IMDB. It's Armageddon for the left. It doesn't sustain its 2hr plus running time. It makes the same points repeatedly. And what does Amy's size have to do with anything?

Death Becomes Her has certainly become a cult favorite over the past 30 years and is not forgotten. Don't Look Up was forgotten so hard it almost feels like it was never even made.

by Anonymousreply 482October 27, 2023 6:54 PM

Despite a to-die-for cast and a seemingly can't-miss premise, Don't Look Up is a failure on too many levels and, although the viewing numbers may satisfy Netflix, it's a shock to see such a high-profile film self-destruct. -James Beradinelli

Did you get a look at that Netflix list? How fucking embarrassing for them. And this is a general comment, not to continue the DLU conversation, but the majority of those titles are horrible, forgettable films. This is their legacy. They should have stayed with mailing out DVDs to people.

by Anonymousreply 497October 27, 2023 8:03 PM

This is a really long thread. Is there any salacious dirt about Meryl or is it just people arguing about whp is the best actress, etc.

by Anonymousreply 498October 27, 2023 8:14 PM

Who, not whp.

by Anonymousreply 499October 27, 2023 8:14 PM

R498 was there ever any salacious dirt about Meryl? People were not interested in her personal life. She and her husband were never considered a power couple and they didn't generate press the way Brad and Angelina, JLo and Ben, JLo and Alex and Richard Gere and gerbils did. Most of her films were boring and so was her personal life.

by Anonymousreply 500October 27, 2023 8:27 PM

R497 My thoughts exactly. Netflix produced a lot of crap. I never heard of most of those titles. And never heard anyone talk about them.

by Anonymousreply 501October 27, 2023 8:33 PM

Most people over 40 could not name a single Bette Davis or Katharine Hepburn film (and most likely would not even know that they are actors).

For them, I could only recommend "All About Eve" and "Suddenly, Last Summer," because most of their other films will seem very boring to modern audiences.

For Streep, her legacy is her acting plus her films, several of which are iconic and beloved. People bitching about her only make her light stronger!

by Anonymousreply 502October 27, 2023 9:24 PM

Sorry, meant under 40.

by Anonymousreply 503October 27, 2023 9:25 PM

Over, under, around or through, you'd be wrong about Bette Davis.

by Anonymousreply 504October 27, 2023 9:25 PM

I would add "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" and "Bringing Up Baby," R502. I don't think either would bore most people.

by Anonymousreply 505October 27, 2023 9:26 PM

R502 I doubt most people under 40 would be able to name a film with Meryl Streep

by Anonymousreply 506October 27, 2023 9:32 PM

Oh, those other films are good too.

Are you nuts? Most people would say The Devil Wears Prada or Mamma Mia, or something else. Meryl is pretty well known.

by Anonymousreply 507October 27, 2023 9:37 PM

All the kids know Meryl as the GOAT

by Anonymousreply 508October 27, 2023 9:41 PM

by Anonymousreply 513October 27, 2023 10:53 PM

Remember when Sharon Stone came for Meryl a few years ago right after they'd worked together on The Laundromat?

“Viola Davis is every bit the actress Meryl Streep is. Emma Thompson. Judy Davis. Olivia Colman. Kate Winslet, for fuck’s sake. But you say Meryl and everybody falls on the floor,” Stone added. “I’m a much better villain than Meryl, and I’m sure she’d say so. Meryl was not gonna be good in ‘Basic Instinct’ or in ‘Casino.’ I would be better. And I know it. And she knows it.

The Everything Zoomer story adds: “‘But we’re all set up to think that only Meryl …’ – here Stone’s voice goes all breathy, and she stretches out her arms in an arabesque, left arm forward – ‘is so amazing …’ – right arm forward – ‘that when you say her name …’ – left arm forward – ‘it must have been amazing …’ – right arm – ‘for me to work …’ – left arm – ‘with her.'”

Stone again brought up Streep when the interviewer turned to the #MeToo movement. The “Casino” Oscar nominee said, “Harassment is everywhere. Until there are real laws, #MeToo was just the opening sentence. I’m sure Meryl has a story. But I’m also sure if Meryl told you her story, she wouldn’t be being Meryl, and she wouldn’t be getting those jobs. Meryl can’t be the envelope pusher. Because then she wouldn’t get the jobs. Meryl’s a smoother. That’s what she does.”

by Anonymousreply 515October 27, 2023 11:23 PM

Sharon Stone is a dishonest nut. No one could pull off the huge range of characters Streep has done over the years. Sharon just likes to think she's such a star. I've got news for you honey, the only thing you're remembered for is flashing your minge to a paying audience.

by Anonymousreply 516October 27, 2023 11:27 PM

R515 Meryl ripped into Trump on the Golden Globes stage so she does speak out more than many actors of her generation. And for Sharon to suggest that Meryl won't share her #MeToo story because she's more worried about her career sounds a bit like victim shaming.

by Anonymousreply 517October 27, 2023 11:47 PM

R517 me thinks Meryl doesn't want to discuss #MeToo because of her longtime lucrative relationship with Harvey.

Streep gave HW the backhanded compliment (calling him the punisher after joking he was God).

Sharon is jealous of Meryl but many of the actresses are. They were frequently not chosen, but that's on them.

I am nominating this for best thread of the year.

by Anonymousreply 521October 28, 2023 12:50 AM

Sharon was right. Meryl isn’t an inherently better actress than many of her peers, that’s just the PR. She’s a good actress, as are most of the peers she’s compared to. I personally find her dull in serious films and far better in comedies where she’s not taking herself so seriously.

Was Kate Hepburn the greatest actress of Old Hollywood because she won the most Oscars? Was Bette Davis because she branded herself as such? So many talented women back then! I enjoy both of these two as actresses, but they aren’t by any means the only great talents from back then. Neither is Meryl the only talent of her age group.

by Anonymousreply 522October 28, 2023 1:08 AM

The quality of her movies is another thing. Carrie (the DePalma film) is much more of a work of “art” than of the Mike Nichols and Nancy Meyers (etc.) middlebrow dreckfests Streep has starred in that make up the majority of her film work. And that’s not even getting into the straight up horrendous shit like Mamma Mia.

by Anonymousreply 523October 28, 2023 1:11 AM

I hope young people are study and remembering all of the history. Thank you citizens.

The three most jealous of Meryl are

Susan Sarandon, who won an Oscar but then never had another good part while Streep never stopped getting get parts

Jessica Lange, for reasons known to her

Sharon Stone, who is perhaps the most petty, childish and entertaining in her jealousy.

by Anonymousreply 524October 28, 2023 1:16 AM

I personally feel that One True thing and Music of the heart are very underated and underappreciated films of Meryls. I really enjoyed them.

by Anonymousreply 525October 28, 2023 1:55 AM

Stone is pathetic. Bitch's ego is way too big. Jealousy doesn't look good on you, sweetie.

by Anonymousreply 526October 28, 2023 2:22 AM

Sharon is a decent actress, not a great actress. (She's also a much better comedienne than people give her credit for.) No, Meryl could not have done Casino because she's not that type. Just like Sharon Stone couldn't have done Sophie's Choice because, well, for a lot of reasons, but you know what I mean.

The point Sharon is trying to make isn't doing her any favors. Meryl could act all those roles with no problem. She's shown her versatility time and again. But you wouldn't cast Meryl in Basic Instinct or Casino because you need a pair of tits and ass who is a decade younger than Meryl was at the time. You might want to re-think this, Shar.

by Anonymousreply 527October 28, 2023 2:46 AM

I don't think Sharon Stone is a great actress, but I like that she spoke out about other actresses being as good or better than Meryl, depending on the role.

Sharon was well-cast in Casino. She had chemistry with the DeNiro and Pesci.

by Anonymousreply 528October 28, 2023 2:52 AM

One True Thing and Music of the Heart are formulaic and dull. The movie equivalent of McDonalds' hamburgers.

If "Mr. Holland's Opus" made you puke, you'd better bring a bucket to this true-life weepie about the importance of teaching music in schools. Rolling Stone Peter Travers

by Anonymousreply 530October 28, 2023 3:53 AM

Sharon was not a good actress. But she was actually quite good in Casino. In a supporting role she somehow thought was lead. She was completely camp in Basic Instinct. And she came into play when the America had their perfect cookie cutter actress they adored in Julia Roberts. No one wanted a slut like her in the American lexicon.

by Anonymousreply 531October 28, 2023 4:07 AM

Sharon is hilarious in a supporting role in Irreconcilable Differences. She is basically playing Cybill Shepherd in a very dramatized (yet comedic) version of the Bogdanovich/Polly Platt breakup with a whole plot about a child trying to divorce her parents tacked on.

by Anonymousreply 532October 28, 2023 4:35 AM

In Sharon's defense, she was stuck in a rotten remake opposite a completely clueless Isabelle Adjani who sleepwalked through the entire film. Sharon had no one to play off other than Kathy Bates, who was fantastic.

And that others had made jokes about that earlier. Of course not! It doesn't fit your spin that Meryl loved him!

Also, how lucrative was it for Meryl working for him? Out of the 100s of movies he produced how many starred Meryl?

by Anonymousreply 541October 28, 2023 8:35 AM

Sharon isn’t a horrendously bad actress like some of you try to make her sound. She’s good when cast properly, like every other actress in history. Nobody, not even Grand Dame Streep, transcends miscasting or bad scripts.

by Anonymousreply 542October 28, 2023 1:03 PM

by Anonymousreply 543October 28, 2023 1:10 PM

R544 she's good when playing femme fatales. She's extremely limited. Many actresses act circles around her but I still agree with her that Meryl does not like to ruffle feathers.

Criticizing Trump in a room full of Hollywood liberals is not brave.

by Anonymousreply 544October 28, 2023 1:21 PM

There was an article that just came out in Vogue where Sharon spoke with some bitterness about how Hollywood has not supported her since her stroke and how she lost her career. Seeing Meryl go from Oscar nomination to Oscar nomination must have really got on her nerves.

by Anonymousreply 545October 28, 2023 1:39 PM

Sharon Stone was good as femme fatales, but Streep is (by far) the better actress overall. And Stone stopped getting work because there is no market for femme fatales in their sixties.

I understand the frustration that Meryl always gets first choice, but the idea that she's a bad or even mediocre actress is ridiculous. The problem isn't Streep so much as that Hollywood is very unimaginative and risk-averse. They cast Meryl (or try to) because they figure that's an unassailable decision that won't get them fired, even if the movie loses money. That makes it hard for all the other actresses in her age group, but that's Hollywood. Not one of them would mind if the shoe were on the other foot.

by Anonymousreply 562October 28, 2023 5:23 PM

R562 It's your mother bitch.

by Anonymousreply 563October 28, 2023 5:25 PM

Bette Davis looked 60 when she was 45, but she's still my favorite all time great. I respect Meryl's resume, and her talent and kudos for her for knowing how to stay relevant without a manufactured feud with another actress (sorry G). But Bette is so much more fun.

by Anonymousreply 564October 28, 2023 5:30 PM

[quote] [R554] I'd hardly call Debbie a legend, she was famous for being cheated on.

Correct. Debbie is famous for being tabloid fodder more than she is for being an actress. I can only think of one memorable or classic film she was in, and that's Singin' in the Rain. Did she have a long career? Of course. But if the Liz Taylor/Eddie Fisher thing hadn't happened, she'd be in the same league as June Allyson.

by Anonymousreply 565October 28, 2023 5:30 PM

R561 She refuses to retire and acting may be her whole life. Most of her recent credits are lackluster: The Laundromat, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Little Women, The Homesman, The Prom, Let Them All Talk, Ricki and the Flash, Suffragette, Into the Woods, The Giver- she gets parts because other actress her age have retired.

[quote]Most of her recent credits are lackluster

What luster filled projects did she turn down to do them, r566?

certainly not roles intended to fill men with lust R567

by Anonymousreply 568October 28, 2023 6:26 PM

I enjoyed Little Women, The Homesman and Let Them All Talk. Again, 3 of those movies being worthwhile out of the ones you listed is not a bad batting average for a long-time star. She's way above a Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda or Sally Field who just do anything now for a salary. Streep also was great on the recent season of Only Murders in the Building, which may win her an Emmy. But by all means, complain away.

by Anonymousreply 569October 28, 2023 6:32 PM

who's complaining R569?

by Anonymousreply 570October 28, 2023 6:36 PM

R569, Streep was barely in THE HOMESMAN.

by Anonymousreply 571October 28, 2023 6:37 PM

[quote] Sharon Stone is a great actress.

I'm sorry, but you obviously know nothing about acting.

by Anonymousreply 572October 28, 2023 6:44 PM

[quote]certainly not roles intended to fill men with lust [R567]

r568 prefers the thespian skills of Jane Russell.

by Anonymousreply 573October 28, 2023 6:53 PM

R556 I'm not downplaying other actresses, there are many legends out there who might even outshine Streep in Hollywood lore, including Liz Taylor. I was just saying Debbie Reynolds wasn't one of them. R565 said it best. Debs was sore she didn't get cast in Postcards From The Edge

R566 what are you on about? Most of her contemporaries including saggy Sarandon, Keaton, Lange, Siggy, Glenn and others are still working away, most of them doing more roles than Streep. You say Meryl is the only one who won't retire. You're babbling shit.

by Anonymousreply 574October 28, 2023 6:53 PM

The only thing Liz outshines Meryl in Hollywood "lore" is scandal, r574.

by Anonymousreply 575October 28, 2023 6:57 PM

Not everything is either or except in your part of the basement R573

Russell and Monroe had charisma and screen presence unlike Meryl .

R571 The Homesman? Who greenlights these projects?

Three women who have been driven mad by pioneer life are to be transported across the country by covered wagon by the pious, independent-minded Mary Bee Cuddy, who in turn employs low-life drifter George Briggs to assist her.

Apparently The Homesman only got financial backing if Streep agreed to do a cameo, so they could use her name in advertising.

by Anonymousreply 579October 28, 2023 7:45 PM

out of africa is so fucking boring!!!!

I tried watching it a few years back didn't even bother finishing it.

by Anonymousreply 580October 28, 2023 7:46 PM

R577 they had pounds of makeup and NASA engineered girdles, you mean.

by Anonymousreply 581October 28, 2023 7:46 PM

R580 that's okay sweetheart, I'm sure you still enjoy your comic book fare.

by Anonymousreply 582October 28, 2023 7:48 PM

i enjoyed her as Julia child. that was a good movie

by Anonymousreply 583October 28, 2023 7:58 PM

R580 Streep and Redford had no chemistry and after 30 minutes I saw no reason to watch 2 more hours.

R581 they had star presence and charisma as did Bette Davis

by Anonymousreply 585October 28, 2023 8:15 PM

SHE'S A LESBIAN, I KNOW IT!!!

by Anonymousreply 586October 28, 2023 8:17 PM

R585 aka they were mentally ill and carefully crafted image of the studios. (Exception Bette Davis)

Meryl is from a completely different generation of actresses, where naturalness and earthiness reign. Even so, and oddly enough, she has an aristocratic air about her, despite her middle class roots and strong desire to play working class women. She doesn't really excel in that realm, I've found.

by Anonymousreply 587October 28, 2023 8:42 PM

Streep was great as working class Karen Silkwood and Lee in Marvin's Room.

by Anonymousreply 588October 28, 2023 8:50 PM

[Quote] aka they were mentally ill and carefully crafted image of the studios. (Exception Bette Davis)

What has that to do with the fact that they were stars? It had nothing to do with their screen images and vast appeal. Many stars were addicts, alcoholics . . .

Many people were groomed for stardom but they didn't have that star quality.

by Anonymousreply 589October 28, 2023 8:50 PM

[quote][R581] they had star presence and charisma as did Bette Davis

So do Sharon Stone and Jennifer Lopez. That doesn’t mean they are great actresses.

by Anonymousreply 590October 28, 2023 8:52 PM

[quote]Russell and Monroe had charisma and screen presence unlike Meryl .

Marilyn Monroe died at age 36. She would have never had a long career like Meryl’s if she’d lived into her 70s, due to being a drug-addled mess.

by Anonymousreply 591October 28, 2023 8:55 PM

[quote]But if the Liz Taylor/Eddie Fisher thing hadn't happened, she'd be in the same league as June Allyson.

I honestly never knew June Allyson was a real actress. I just knew her as the Depends Lady.

by Anonymousreply 592October 28, 2023 8:58 PM

These threads are always interesting because people seem to fixate on

- Meryl's looks

- Allegations that she has no classic films (which is easy enough to shoot down)

- People bringing up her lesser films as "proof", as if every film she puts out should have been perfect

- Resentment that she got great roles all through her career, with the insinuation that other actresses were robbed

- And of course, blaming/shaming her for working with Harvey Weinstein

You would think she was a superhero with super powers.

by Anonymousreply 593October 28, 2023 9:00 PM

Meryl’s “in-demand” status comes down to the fact that she has a normal looking face for a woman her age, not fillered and botoxed to high heaven. And by all accounts, she’s easy to work with and gets along well with cast and crew in her films with no diva attitude.

by Anonymousreply 594October 28, 2023 9:01 PM

[Quote] So do Sharon Stone and Jennifer Lopez. That doesn’t mean they are great actresses.

and no one ever said they were. No one is equating star quality with acting ability.

by Anonymousreply 595October 28, 2023 9:03 PM

and she's always available R594

R593 wishing you a safe, fast and successful unclenching.

by Anonymousreply 597October 28, 2023 9:09 PM

Not so R596 Meryl turns down a lot. Such as Places, Please currently being shot with Jessica Lange. I'm sure the writers and producers were thrilled that instead of a big release and attention for their project it will likely languish barely watched on some streaming service.

The reason Meryl gets offers is because she has box office appeal and her movies usually turn a good profit. Simple

by Anonymousreply 598October 28, 2023 9:09 PM

Her longevity and international appeal can also be contributed to her blue-eyed blonde looks.

Would Mamma Mia have done such great box office numbers if her character -- a slutty type, no less--was played by a dark skinned black woman? No way.

[Quote] But if the Liz Taylor/Eddie Fisher thing hadn't happened, she'd be in the same league as June Allyson

She starred in National Velvet, Life with Father, A Place in the Sun and Giant before she ever got involved with Fisher.

by Anonymousreply 600October 28, 2023 9:17 PM

R599 is Viola Davis.
