by Anonymousreply 4October 14, 2023 9:17 PM

Fuck you, OP!

by Anonymousreply 5October 14, 2023 9:18 PM

Pat Boone was not a Pop Singer. Never sang a standard in his life, and the white motherfukker ripped me off. Faggot ofay

Cindy Lauper

by Anonymousreply 7October 14, 2023 9:22 PM

Oh, but Edie....you are a singer!! Fantastic voice. Very underrated. Ten thousand times better than your hubby

by Anonymousreply 8October 14, 2023 9:22 PM

R3 nails it.

Perry Como is great. I find him very soothing but not boring. On a technical level, I love listening to his phrasing.

by Anonymousreply 15October 14, 2023 10:00 PM

Kenny Chesney is the correct answer.

by Anonymousreply 16October 14, 2023 10:05 PM

Jack Jones. Being boring was part of his appeal, like Como.

by Anonymousreply 17October 14, 2023 10:11 PM

R11, you made me laugh. One of the best uses of the Matt Damon post in ages.

by Anonymousreply 18October 14, 2023 10:42 PM

Como = slo mo for me. How he got a primetime network show still baffles me.

Andy Williams wasn't quite as milquetoast as Perry, as I recall.

Lawrence (b. Sidney Liebowitz) was best in a duet.

My vote for blandest-dullest goes to Vaughn Monroe. He tops Perry for voices that put me to sleep.

by Anonymousreply 19October 14, 2023 10:47 PM

Mel Torme

They didn’t call him the “Velvet Fog” for nothing.

by Anonymousreply 20October 14, 2023 10:50 PM

Josh Groban. Michael Bolton.

by Anonymousreply 21October 14, 2023 11:02 PM

Andy Williams had a voice like butter, literally. Smooth and silky and warm. He was my first favorite. Maybe my first crush.

by Anonymousreply 22October 14, 2023 11:21 PM

Taylor Swift.

by Anonymousreply 23October 14, 2023 11:55 PM

Como only got where he was because of his looks and all the females swooning over him. He wasn't really that special a singer. Executives smelled ratings, sales, moolah, and a star was born. He also probably sucked pole or presented hole for the right men. I've heard he was actually quite an asshole who thought himself on the same level as Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.

by Anonymousreply 24October 14, 2023 11:57 PM

Taylor Swift. As I once described her career, she’s Madonna doing “True Blue” over and over and over. She makes music for girls who want to be forever 17 writing in their diary. People can claim her “folk” albums were maturity, I say they were just acoustic versions of her “True Blue”. And she’s BORING.

Celine Dion. She was just a white answer to Whitney Houston. Whitney wanted to do R&B music and Celine swooped in.

Adele. Boring and predictable. Piano ballad hitting the same notes over and over again.

Lana del Rey. Every song is a remake of “Video Games”.

by Anonymousreply 25October 15, 2023 12:04 AM

R3 Give Pat Boone some credit for his metal standards album.

by Anonymousreply 26October 15, 2023 12:06 AM

Adele!

by Anonymousreply 27October 15, 2023 12:10 AM

If you want to talk about bland and dull.

If you can make it last 30 seconds, this is Adele’s cover of George Michael’s “Fast Love” and put her “style” on it.

She sucked the soul, the mood, the flavor, the life out of the song and it sucked so bad, she had to start it over live on TV, it was so horrible.

Sorry, but Barbra Streisand

by Anonymousreply 29October 15, 2023 12:19 AM

You're not going to change my mind here:

Karen Carpenter - in all the songs I've ever heard her sing - sounds like she's about to nod off into a heroin-induced nod fest.

I'm in my mid 50s and I've always thought this. I won't necessarily turn off a song that I might come across when she's singing, but I certainly don't have a nostalgic feeling about her at all and would never include her in my music library. She personifies the elevator music sound to me.

I know, i'm about to get a thousand bitch slaps and verbal smack-downs from all of you.

by Anonymousreply 30October 15, 2023 12:28 AM

I can't stand the sound of Jon Bon Jovi's voice. In the car I listen to a classic rock station and when he comes on, I mute.

by Anonymousreply 31October 15, 2023 12:30 AM

Let's keep to Pop singers, not rock singers.....Wayne Newton my choice

by Anonymousreply 33October 15, 2023 1:37 AM

Elton John

Billy Joel

Adele

by Anonymousreply 34October 15, 2023 1:39 AM

90% of Paul McCartney's solo material.

by Anonymousreply 35October 15, 2023 1:39 AM

Totally agree about Billy Joel but I don't think Elton is boring at all. Annoying, yes. But not boring.

by Anonymousreply 36October 15, 2023 1:42 AM

Elton John. So overrated.

by Anonymousreply 37October 15, 2023 1:46 AM

Was Perry Como a HOMO?

He seemed like someone who might have been a connoisseur of COCK.

by Anonymousreply 38October 15, 2023 2:02 AM

Andy Williams is one of the best male singers ever.

by Anonymousreply 39October 15, 2023 2:04 AM

I loved SCTV but 50%of tge show was spoofing late night tv commercials. There seemed to be hundreds of sketches based on Columbia Record Company ads.

The show would make no sense to young people today.

Trailor (all versions)

by Anonymousreply 43October 15, 2023 4:12 AM

Wtf is Brittany, R13?

by Anonymousreply 44October 15, 2023 4:13 AM

I was trying to make a list of 1960s crooners, pop singers who had top songs in the 1950s and 1960s some were very mainstream, others were more “rock” than the older stars.

Bobby Darin was a good singer with perfect pitch. He was identified as more “rock” by the media. His first hit was written by the mother of radio DJ Murray the K.

Bobby Darin, Paul Anka, Bobby Rydell, Bobby Vinton, Fabian, Frankie Avalon were identified more with the younger generation.

Jack Jones, Steve Lawrence, Anthony Newley, Dean Martin, Al Martino, Vic Damone, Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, Steve Allen, Perry Como were older generations.

I wonder what that group of singers can be called. They’re not really pop. They were mainstream and disappeared when rock took hold in late 60s/early 70s. Burt Bacharach, like Elvis, was in his own field.

It took a really long time for the Grammys to award best album to rock and roll singers. For years rock groups and Motown were outselling guys like Andy Williams and Perry como but they wouldn’t win any awards.

by Anonymousreply 45October 15, 2023 4:56 AM

I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative, R23 and R25.

by Anonymousreply 46October 15, 2023 5:10 AM

Someone said Barbra Streisand upthread? JFC - one of the most original and astonishing singers of the 20th century. You’re too fucking stupid to live.

by Anonymousreply 47October 15, 2023 5:12 AM

Taylor Swift

Neil Sedaka

Anne Murray

by Anonymousreply 48October 15, 2023 5:21 AM

R1 Mrs. Miller had a face like Brillo but a body like Dawn.

by Anonymousreply 49October 15, 2023 6:00 AM

What’s happened to Kenny Chesney?

by Anonymousreply 50October 15, 2023 6:21 AM

Harry Stylezzzz

by Anonymousreply 51October 15, 2023 6:51 AM

r15: come sit next to me. I also find Perry Como's voice very soothing and warm, with impeccable phrasing. He was Richard Rodgers' choice to make the first hit recording of "Some Enchanted Evening" right before the opening of SOUTH PACIFIC.

by Anonymousreply 52October 15, 2023 7:49 AM

[quote]Jack Jones, Steve Lawrence, Anthony Newley, Dean Martin, Al Martino, Vic Damone, Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, Steve Allen, Perry Como were older generations.

Steve Allen was not a singer.

by Anonymousreply 53October 15, 2023 9:15 AM

Uh, Pat Boone was the quintessential, and exceptionally popular, Pop singer, r6.

Apparently the genre of "Crooner" is herein the equivalent of "bland and boring." Just say it, then, and be done with it, rather than enumerating Como, Monroe, Williams, etc.

I loved those smooth tenors and baritones of yore. I would watch their TV shows weekly, and look forward to their Christmas specials. I would "follow the bouncing ball" with Mitch Miller and his orchestra. Yes, and Lawrence Welk as well, with the great Irish-American tenor Joe Feeney.

Came here to say Taylor Swift. I will never understand her meteoritic rise to success.

by Anonymousreply 55October 15, 2023 9:34 AM

Judy fucking Collins. EVERY SONG IS THE SAME.

by Anonymousreply 56October 15, 2023 9:54 AM

Billie Eilish. Boring, overweight, whispercoo trashbag.

by Anonymousreply 57October 15, 2023 10:35 AM

Sorry, R29. Barbra Streisand is irritating, not bland.

by Anonymousreply 58October 15, 2023 12:07 PM

Barbra’s pop career was pretty dull but not in general as an artist.

by Anonymousreply 59October 15, 2023 7:13 PM

What “pop career”?

by Anonymousreply 60October 15, 2023 7:23 PM

by Anonymousreply 63October 15, 2023 11:42 PM

No one is suggesting Steve Allen was a singer, R53. But he did discover and push Steve and Eydie

by Anonymousreply 69October 16, 2023 7:09 AM

I seriously don't know who most of the singers posted in this thread are! Y'all must be 100 or older.

by Anonymousreply 70October 16, 2023 7:17 AM

Both Simon & Garfunkel thought Andy Williams was THE voice. Listen to this. Not his usual style. I get that you may not like his style or material choice but this is proof he could sing anything and outdo almost anyone. Simon & Garfunkel didn't do this for anyone else. Listen to how effortlessly he adjust his voice to THEIR limitations. Though I truly love S&G just to be clear. This gives me the fucking chills.

by Anonymousreply 74October 16, 2023 3:49 PM

I'll be crucified for this, but I truly don't understand why Linda Ronstadt was such a big deal in the 70s. I'd rather listen to Perry Como.

I love it. Linda Ronstadt -freely acknowledged by great musicians and singers (Emmylou, Dolly, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Don Henley, Joni Mitchell etc etc) as one of the great voices/singers of our generation - citing the power and nuance and clarity of her voice as well as her ability to sing in almost every conceivable genre - dismissed at the DL. JFC.

R86 For me, Ronstadt is one of those "great voice, bad material" singers like Celine Dion. What in dentist office hell is "Blue Bayou"?

by Anonymousreply 90October 18, 2023 1:30 AM

Linda's "hits" are the least of her music. What else have you heard from Simple Dreams, Sylvia?

by Anonymousreply 91October 18, 2023 1:32 AM

Linda made me uncomfortable. She was always one fried bean away from obesity.

by Anonymousreply 92October 18, 2023 4:04 AM

Judy Collins, ironic that she gifted Sondheim with his biggest pop hit.

There was a girl named Mary MacGregor who had a #1 hit with Torn Between Two Lovers. It was the most nondescript vocal performance imaginable. This video got 14M views!

by Anonymousreply 93October 18, 2023 5:28 AM

To name Ronstadt is ridiculous, IMO, but you can put Nicolette Larson on the list.

by Anonymousreply 94October 18, 2023 5:31 AM

R91 Why would I make the effort to seek out the other album tracks when I don't even like the hit singles?

by Anonymousreply 95October 18, 2023 10:14 AM

r95 Because they're better, generally speaking. I don't like "Blue Bayou" any more than you do, Syl. Or, from that album, "Tumbling Dice," which I believe are the singles. I love every other song on Hasten down the Wind besides its hit, "That'll Be the Day." Same with "Heat Wave" on Prisoner in Disguise. I usually skip these songs when they pop up.

And I can't stand "You're No Good."

But Linda Ronstadt, generally speaking, is my favorite singer. Except for the "hits," she picks out really great music most of the time (she doesn't write her own music 99% of the time).
