A truly great actress.

Excellent as Newman's doomed girlfriend in THE HUSTLER.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | October 14, 2023 9:09 PM |
Best performance in a horror movie ever. She deserved an Oscar for Carrie.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 14, 2023 9:11 PM |
She was also great on Twin Peaks!
by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 14, 2023 9:12 PM |
Oh no! I'll be weeping into my dirty pillows tonight.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 14, 2023 9:13 PM |
She was robbed of an Oscar for that performance
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 14, 2023 9:13 PM |
I saw her off Broadway in Larry Kramer's The Destiny of Me and she was unforgettable.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 14, 2023 9:16 PM |
Beatrice Straight was excellent in her small role in Network, but Piper really should have won that year.

I should've killed myself when he put it in me. After the first time, before we were married, Ralph promised never again. He promised, and I believed him. But sin never dies. Sin never dies. At first, it was all right. We lived sinlessly. We slept in the same bed, but we never did it. And then, that night, I saw him looking down at me that way. We got down on our knees to pray for strength. I smelled the whiskey on his breath. Then he took me. He took me, with the stink of filthy roadhouse whiskey on his breath, and I liked it. I liked it! With all that dirty touching of his hands all over me.
Margaret now, Margaret forever.

She was awesome as the snarky Catherine Martell on Twin Peaks. A true DataLounger, that one!

I don’t think big yellow polka dots did her look any favors.

She also had the good sense to not be in that stupid Twin Peaks Season 3. That whole thing was a horseload of nonsense.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 14, 2023 9:29 PM |
Quite big tits
by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 14, 2023 9:34 PM |
R13 she was 91. You’re gonna see a lot of deaths because all the “greats” and OGs are now old, if not dead already.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 14, 2023 9:36 PM |
Piper appears @19:55 After The Hustler she never made another film until Carrie
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 14, 2023 9:37 PM |
Her small guest turn in Frasier was hysterical.
I’ll never look at another bottle of Mateus without thinking of her…

Fun fact: She was named after Sarah Palin's daughter.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 14, 2023 9:43 PM |
Excellent as the psycho foster parent in LAW AND ORDER: SVU.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 14, 2023 9:45 PM |
Aww! I'm so bummed she passed. I mostly remember her as the bats*it crazy, overly religious mother in "Carrie" (1976).
I just recently watched her on an episode of "Cold Case" (a really good, underrated show) called "Best Friends." Piper played an elderly woman (and a great-grandmother) who, as a teenager during the Great Depression, had a forbidden, secret lesbian relationship with Billie, a black, butch teenager that went missing in 1932. We find out later on in the episode what happened to Billie. The ending of the episode is very "Thelma & Louise" (minus the fact that one of them survives).
RIP Piper!

She looked very good in the op pic
by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 14, 2023 9:57 PM |
She appeared in Curtis Harrington's Ruby. A cheap Florida set horror film was quickly thrown together to capitalize on Carrie.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 14, 2023 9:59 PM |
R26- That girl looks a bit like Andrea McArdle from ANNIE.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 14, 2023 10:02 PM |
A great long life, but I’m still sad to lose an actor I really admired. She was just so different and made so many interesting choices in her craft. That’s really something inspiring.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 14, 2023 10:04 PM |
RUBY was so weird because she ran a drive in movie.....and they were showing 'Attack of the 50-Foot Woman' about five years before it was actually made.
Kinda like when Annie and Warbucks went to Radio City Music Hall and saw 'Camille' two years before it was made.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 14, 2023 10:07 PM |
A phenomenal actress. She had a great sense of humor about Carrie, and showed up to a number of the cast reunions for the film. Faye Dunaway, you could learn a thing or two from her.

by Anonymous | reply 38 | October 14, 2023 10:31 PM |
She was so, so good in The Hustler. A beautifully nuanced performance - she could have gone all hammy with the part and instead chose to understate it throughout, with magnificent results. I love her delicate, expressive features, too. An intelligent beauty.

R46. Thank you so much for posting. So I guess we can't list Children of a Lesser God among our favorite films because Bill Hurt abused Marlee? Somehow the film is tainted now? Good heavens how foolish to ask Piper how she feels about the film after Marlee's accusations of abuse.

She also played the horrible woman who gets murdered in the Peter Ustinov/Hercule Poirot film "Appointment with Death" in 1988. It also starred Lauren Bacall, Carrie Fisher, John Gielgud & Hayley Mills.

"Piper Laurie was born Rosetta Jacobs in Detroit, Michigan on January 22, 1932. Laurie was the younger of two children (both girls) of Alfred Jacobs, a furniture dealer, and his wife, Charlotte Sadie (née Alperin) Jacobs. Her paternal grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Poland and her maternal grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Russia.
Laurie was delivered, according to her 2011 autobiography Learning to Live Out Loud, in a one-bedroom walk-up on Tyler Street in Detroit, where the family lived."

I started watching The Grass Harp in her honor last night but had to turn it off after about 30 minutes...What a crappy film! Piper is wonderful in it and Sissy Spacek (Carrie reunion!) plays her bitchy sister but the direction and screenplay are all over the place. I later read it was directed by a talentless nepobaby Charles Matthau and it suddenly all made sense. Post-facelift Jack Lemmon appears in the movie too, showing his scary new face.
I then rewatched Has Anybody Seen My Gal? instead, the delightful Douglas Sirk comedy. Piper and Rock Hudson were such a beautiful couple in that one.

by Anonymous | reply 66 | October 15, 2023 2:42 PM |
Why is Peri Gilpin wearing such ugly flat shoes in that Frasier clip? Did Wardrobe think the camera wouldn't catch them? Or is there some prior plot point they made?

R46- What a great interview, at 90 she was still extremely "with it" and an extremely gracious and kind woman. I enjoyed that very much.
You can tell that the movie business was NOT her reason for living. What a cool lady.

r74 Good question! Did she have Richard Beymer too as they had great onscreen chemistry in Twin Peaks?
by Anonymous | reply 75 | October 27, 2023 1:54 AM |
R75 Beymer more likely had Piper's Hustler co star Paul Newman when they worked on Hemmingway's Adventures as a Young Man

I watched UNTIL THEY SAIL last night. Piper's attempt at a New Zealand accent was pretty horrible but damn - the woman was just oozing onscreen charisma! Once her character disappears from the story the movie gets much duller.
