I have mixed views on GoFundMe and other forms of online fundraising. A high school classmate died of cancer in 2016. The year prior she and her husband set up a GoFundMe stating that a good amount of their savings had been wiped out due to medical expenses and they were fighting with their insurance company regarding coverage. I donated to them a couple of times. They were always appreciative and over the past several years, the husband and the daughters are involved in various organizations that support cancer patients and their families with rides to appointments, raising money for gift cards, taking meals, etc. They are paying it forward.

Around the time of my classmate's GFM, my cousin's fundie Christian step-daughter had a GFM because she and her then-husband were trying to adopt a baby. They couldn't afford the home study and adoption agency fees. Nobody really donated to them in part because they had a history of being bad with money and were known to ask people in the past for money so they could pay their bills. They didn't raise much money and the GFM was taken down.

During the pandemic, a former co-worker and her live in boyfriend both got severe covid and set up a GFM. Both were hospitalized and the boyfriend was in the hospital longer. Since they were known anti-vaxxers, they didn't raise much money and the live in boyfriend bitched all over Facebook about how no one was wanting to help them out. Another former co-worker's husband died of covid and was anti-vaxxer, they raised money on GFM from people at their church. I did donate to one anti-vaxxer's GFM, but it was a bit of a complicated situation. My mom's friend suffered a stroke years ago and since then she can't really speak or take care of herself. Her daughters take care of her during the day while the husband works part-time at a gas station. The husband is anti-vaxxer asswipe who has posted a bunch of shit on FB about hating people on welfare or other forms of government assistance. . Anway, he got covid after playing in a pool tournament and she got covid too. My mom's friend got a mild case, but the husband ended up hospitalized. A GFM was set up because the husband worried about the bills because he wasn't going to be working and they were dependent on the money from the part time job for bills. I decided to donate mainly because I didn't want my mom's friend to suffer. Later, when I talked with my mom she said that she donated for the same reason. People in their friends' circles love the wife, but loath the husband.

I was going to say that "hop" might be too strong of a word because a hop or a step suggests that she's doing it to remain balanced, to prevent something worse on the landing. The, I was going to say that she "rebounds" - the whole of her feet come off the mat slightly, basically bouncing straight up a very small amount. But at least from the angle in this video, it looks like she lands in place and of course the knees will bend a little on the landing, but she comes up from the knee bend right away and it seems like her heels come off the ground for a split second, even if the balls of her feet remain in place. Routine does seem immeasurably simpler than today, though I do like the strength positions and handstands. Modern beam is almost too much in the other direction - a full floor routine on beam. We get it, "connection bonus."

In fairness to the routines of previous eras, I'm assuming that Mary Lou wasn't in the elite of beam competitors. Yes, routines were generally easier overall than today. But, I'm assuming someone was going a beam routine that was more impressive than MLR's.

R423, shouldn't MLR have received a deduction for her lack of 180 split position? Although yeah, scoring seemed much more free and loose in the '80s codes vs. today where it's near impossible to get above a 9.0 score in execution.

MLR routine WAS easy for its time, however, the punchfront on beam was considered high difficulty for its time. The two back tucks were not, however. I'm not sure if that routine was judged out of a 9.9 or a 10, however. Retton actually got away with murder with that routine as there was required tumbling combination and I believe MLR got credit with the handstand step-down back tuck which is a dubious combo to say the least. Before she moved to Karolyi her routine was more difficcult and did include a legit tumbling combo of round-off to back layout step-out but she ALWAYS missed it, so Marta (the Karolyi beam coach) took it out and somehow got away with that handstand step down back tuck as a combo (not really two tumbling elements). I will say they did a good job of hiding MLR's self-admitted lack of flexibility with that blink and you'll miss it side split.

With that said, at the same Olympics, Romanian Simona Pauca did four variations of back layouts in three different tumbling passes in her beam set, which is pretty bonkers difficulty. Two years earlier Szabo had landed a standing back full which is still a tough element today (Szabo began growing up and out from 1983 onward and began to decrease difficulty as the years passed), so MLR's routine was weak even for the time save for the punch front and the RO double back dismount.
