Does anyone find tattoos as utterly revolting as I do?

I don’t make any exceptions at all. I don’t think any of them qualify as art. Even one small tattoo is one too many. And ordinary people can’t afford to have anything but the crappiest work done. What is the drive to get one? It is incomprehensible to me.

by Anonymousreply 173December 9, 2024 2:53 PM

Yes. I do.

by Anonymousreply 1October 6, 2023 5:10 PM

I hate them but II keep that to myself

by Anonymousreply 2October 6, 2023 5:30 PM

I find them repellent.

by Anonymousreply 3October 6, 2023 5:34 PM

Me too.

by Anonymousreply 4October 6, 2023 5:35 PM

Ditto.

by Anonymousreply 5October 6, 2023 5:35 PM

Even the ones that their aficionados ooh and aah over are usually about the quality of a black velvet painting of Elvis or something air brushed onto a van in the 70s. The texts are like permanent "live laugh love" signs (even when they're not misspelled). However, I have seen some exceptions (more expensive?), especially on people who just have one or two in inconspicuous places and in brownish, flesh-tone-adjacent ink rather than the ubiquitous blue-black or fluorescent green, yellow, and red.

by Anonymousreply 6October 6, 2023 5:37 PM

They look best on dark skinned black guys.

by Anonymousreply 7October 6, 2023 5:55 PM

I have yet to see the tattoo that improves on the look of smooth, naturally toned human skin. Skin is a work of art all its own, not a blank piece of paper or sheet of canvas that was made to have something put on it.

by Anonymousreply 8October 6, 2023 6:08 PM
I have yet to see the tattoo that improves on the look of smooth, naturally toned human skin.

So it could potentially improve Luke Evans’ skin?

by Anonymousreply 9October 6, 2023 6:15 PM

Decades of commercial propaganda have taught people that a totally unique and important individual self resides inside them that must be expressed and displayed to the world through conspicuous aesthetics (commercial products and services)

Next on Data Lounge: Eldergays Hate Things!

by Anonymousreply 11October 6, 2023 6:18 PM

Only prisoners need to have permanent tattoos.

I wish someone would open a temporary tattoo parlor where bachelorette parties could go before they hit the gay bars.

by Anonymousreply 12October 6, 2023 6:20 PM

I think tattos can be sexy on muscular men, but I find them hideous on women. They look so low class.

by Anonymousreply 13October 6, 2023 6:22 PM

This always comes up here. Yes I hate them. Yes an elder gay. Growing up communal showers high school, college, Ys, gyms, lots of naked men walking around as God made them with no inhibitions and no tatts. Little did I know it was to suddenly stop. It had been going on for so long.

by Anonymousreply 14October 6, 2023 6:22 PM

For awhile there I didn't mind them, but it's oversaturated now and kind of a dealbreaker. They are ugly mistakes.

by Anonymousreply 15October 6, 2023 6:26 PM

Obviously porn is where you get to see what men have decided to decorate themselves with. Some are totally overboard of with face tatts and almost every inch covered, and then there are ones that have a little ink artfully placed here and there, but guys who are in the industry without any ink at all are the hottest to me. They are rarer and they’ve made the choice not to follow the crowd, because tatts are the norm. Ink often is like graffiti on Michelanglo’s David.

by Anonymousreply 16October 6, 2023 6:29 PM

I don't like them. It reminds me of a spoiled banana. Good description, R8.

Btw I was watching a video of Holly Madison, famed for the Girls next door, you know Hugh Hefner's show with his girlfriends. Holly had the Playboy logo tatooed on her very low back area. I've heard those called a tramp stamp.

I wondered if she since has had it removed, because she is the one who loved and then left Hef. She woke up to the fact she was in an abusive relationship, more than that and there is better ways of putting it I'm sure. Damaging. She now has books videos and programs stating how that whole relationship was Stockholm syndrome, which it probably was but I think she also had some real feelings for the man, which totally confuse her now and that little 'stamp' is kind of like the brand mark on cattle. I wonder if she had considered getting rid of it.

by Anonymousreply 17October 6, 2023 6:37 PM

Loathe them. The worst though is they don't age well. I've got a lot of friends who got them when they were young and perky and now they have these saggy misshapen faded monstrosities on their skin. Bleugghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

by Anonymousreply 18October 6, 2023 6:40 PM

Tacky. But at least they signal to me what class of person I am dealing with. I'm a snob about a lot of things and this is one of the easier ways to categorize people. It's all done in my head and I don't talk about it except here.

by Anonymousreply 19October 6, 2023 6:48 PM

They are repulsive because they are a form of self-mutilation and self-harm. One tattoo can be deemed just a momentary lapse in judgement, but multiple tattoos is unquestionably a cry for help. I have so much more respect for people who keep themselves tattoo-free.

by Anonymousreply 20October 6, 2023 6:52 PM

The last ER Dr. I saw, had, essentially sleeves. Not totally filled in, although I really wasn't paying much attention given why I was there. As a physician, they were good, but still had a knee-jerk reaction in my head. Adding to this is my hypocrisy, as I have one, (I did it right at 18, would remove if I had to see it on a regular basis, but where it is, its seldom seen, and removal is extremely painful, so I have a reminder I was young and dumb.)

Still wondered if that Dr. will feel the same.

by Anonymousreply 21October 6, 2023 6:57 PM

I understand one or two tattoos for very sad or sweet personal reasons. Other than that they look like the old meat grade stamps, dirt or bruises. The colors are unappealing and attention grabbing in the wrong way.

by Anonymousreply 22October 6, 2023 7:01 PM

I don't like them but I can understand having one over a bad scar.

by Anonymousreply 23October 6, 2023 7:31 PM

A bunch of tatts indicate a trash-person to me. Yes, I'm an eldergay. The way that I was raised, the only people who had tattoos were men who had been in the service. They only had one tatt, usually a representation of the branch of service or unit they had served in. It could never be seen unless those men were shirtless.

I never saw women with tattoos at all until I was older and then they were street whores and carnies.

by Anonymousreply 24October 6, 2023 7:41 PM

To me, putting permanent ink markings on your body means you’re owned by someone else. You’re property of a slave owner, or of a pimp, or you’re a member of a tribe or gang you can never leave and have to wear its official tattoo.

Or you’ve been permanently marked as an enemy, criminal or adulterer. Your station in life might have been tattooed on your face in ancient times so you could identified as unclean, a heretic, an untouchable. Your religion might’ve been forced on you.

I just can’t get over someone wanting to announce their stupidity/lesser status to the world on their skin.

by Anonymousreply 25October 6, 2023 7:51 PM

R13- The look LOW CLASS on EVERYONE

by Anonymousreply 26October 6, 2023 7:56 PM

FFS, what log have you been sleeping under? Feeling down and want the W/W votes? You've found the safest place in the world to ask that question.

Datalounge is crawling with old men who have extremely vehement opinions against tattoos, about men "who ruined their looks!"

Nevermind that most of these men haven't been fucked by anyone with a dick not made of latex for two decades or more, they are mad as hell and not going to take another tattoo!

(To anticipate the question: I'm in my 60s, have no tattoos present or past, enjoy sex, and try not to become on the verge of violently obsessed with what people whom I'm not fucking "have done to themselves." It's pointless.

by Anonymousreply 27October 6, 2023 8:05 PM

I only find neck and face tattoos sexy.

by Anonymousreply 28October 6, 2023 8:08 PM

I don't have any tattoos. I take each person's tattoos under individual consideration. I find the tight-assed, grouchy, bitter Negative Nancies such as OP to be utterly pathetic and miserable excuses for gay men.

by Anonymousreply 29October 6, 2023 8:20 PM

Yes.

by Anonymousreply 38October 6, 2023 9:14 PM

It varies by style. I think most new school tattoos are ugly, and getting words tattooed on you is ridiculous (just buy an engraved bracelet or something). But american traditional, neotrad, or even some black & white can be tastefully done. And placement matters. Face/neck tats always look shitty.

Pretty much everyone on DL. But I'm guessing you knew that before you created this thread.

Well they all look like bruises, eventually.

Nurse Ratched types love them at the the old folks home. All the fun of beatings, with none of the evidence.

by Anonymousreply 49October 6, 2023 10:26 PM

No I’m not revolted by it as it is on a huge part of contemporary society . I though do not have tats because it’s not right for me. It does not turn me off unless done in extreme ways such as on the face or whole body coverage.

by Anonymousreply 50October 6, 2023 10:31 PM

I think tattoos look extra trashy and are so monkey see - monkey do. The gays seem to find them beyond edgy!

Everyone I know who crosses that line and keeps planning more and more "ink" seems completely fucking nuts to me, especially if they get tattoos on their neck where a dress shirt doesn't hide them, or "sleeves".

They look insane and usually are.

by Anonymousreply 72October 7, 2023 2:34 AM

I pretty much hate them, but I have no problem with an Olympic athlete getting a smallish five rings tattoo. I have a friend who completed an Ironman and got a small Ironman logo tattooed on her ankle. Good for her! If I ever manage to see all of Shakespeare’s plays on stage (only four to go!), I’m getting a small 37 inked somewhere. Commemorating a pretty big accomplishment is fine. But arm sleeves or huge angel wings on your back or random collections of tats all around someone’s body are a No. I saw a big hunky guy once with a large Tweety Bird in color on most of his left calf. Whyyy? I guess they want you to ask, but in the end I don’t really care and wouldn’t give them the satisfaction. Didn’t any of these fools have grandfathers or great uncles who’d served in an earlier war and got inked so they could see how horribly tattoos age? I did. Common sense: It’s not very common.

r73 Giant Tweety! My god, that could have just been a t-shirt instead.

Given what I've heard, they don't want you to ask and it is considered rude to the gross tattooed women I've known. Like you're covered in random pictures, you have a snake wrapped around an egg on your arm flab and no one can ask you why? Weird!

The fact that people in general don't give a fuck what eldergays think is hardly a news flash, genius. But you seem outraged that eldergays even have opinions.

by Anonymousreply 84October 7, 2023 4:40 AM

It just seems painful and a waste of time and money.

If you had a shit-tonne done, that would cost a small fortune (and a lot of your time) but it's not like they're something you can sell if you needed money. They're really the ultimate luxury for some people who have them.

And what if you get sick of them and what they represent? More time, pain and money to get rid of them.

I just hope the people who have them enjoy them because a lot of the designs turn blue and blurry and end up looking similar to those on other people.

by Anonymousreply 85October 7, 2023 10:01 AM

They were definitely cool for a while, but heifers like this one getting in on the action helped bring them down.

by Anonymousreply 86October 7, 2023 12:46 PM

I think its a generational thing. If you grew up during the times when they were frowned upon you are mostly likely preconditioned to judge people who have them. Im a young(er) person here so I just dont care. To me its like someone wearing jewelry. Yes you can have tacky or ugly jewelry or wear too much of it. Same with tats.

by Anonymousreply 87October 7, 2023 12:59 PM

Hate, loathe, and despise them. They are repulsive and often look like a skin disease. The more there are the trashier they look, with face, neck, and hand tattoos being the absolute worst. This graffiti for the body is nothing more than conformity with the herd mentality.

The saddest tats are the ones that are disfiguring otherwise hot, muscular guys who would look fantastic but for the inky Post-it notes randomly ruining their bodies. 🤮🤮🤮🤮

by Anonymousreply 88October 7, 2023 1:21 PM

I like them on certain other people but I wouldn’t get one. I’m in my early 40s so my cohort are covered in them. I think my parents told me they look trashy so maybe that’s why I don’t have any. But I don’t judge what other people do.

by Anonymousreply 89October 7, 2023 1:29 PM

I have three tattoos and all can be easily hidden.

The first one is on my back and is a Celtic knot (I know - corny) that I got when I lived in Dublin. The second is a very small Gemini symbol on my inner wrist for my son and the third is on my other inner wrist and is in arial font, seriously. It’s a line from Bridge Over Troubled Water and I added it after my mom died: Your time has come to shine all your dreams are on their way.

If you saw me on the street in normal clothing, you would have no idea I had tattoos. Having said that, several of my coworkers have multiple, very obvious tattoos (sleeves, even! Mary!) and I’m so used to them here in Austin that I barely notice when I see ink.

Some of them are stupid and face tats are especially dumb but beyond that, live and let live.

The etiquette around 'asking' is similar to asking why someone has a skin graft scar. Many people get tattoos to visually explicate their trials, their successes, wounds, and such. Everything is steeped in 'meaning '. I've found that people like to explain their ink when talking about topics that lead to the aforementioned events. I think, they think, that their ink makes them 'deep'.

It's almost like wearing your social media pages contents on your body.

by Anonymousreply 106October 7, 2023 8:17 PM

If people want to add a hint of edge to their style, there are so many easier, less permanent, and less expensive ways to do it.

The other month, I was riding the bus, and a well-built black man, dressed in nice jeans and a shirt, boarded and stood across the aisle from where I sat. He held onto one of the overhead pulls, and I noticed he was wearing a wide leather cuff bracelet that set off his hand beautifully--the hand was muscled and the skin smooth and unblemished. Just a very strong, dark hand set off by a leather cuff bracelet. The effect was subtle but striking. That's how you do it, IMHO. That's how you get across your edge.

by Anonymousreply 107October 7, 2023 8:33 PM

Yes. I think they are markers of tastelessness and a lack of class. I don’t say this publicly because I don’t want to appear snobbish, but I would never have a partner with tattoos or piercings. I prefer the clean look. Skin is so beautiful on its own. I’ll fuck guys with tattoos but won’t date or marry them.

Some of the Maori tattoos used to look pretty good in the movie The Piano.

But it's weird being served by someone who appears to work minimum wage and they're covered in them. I just wonder how they afforded them.

by Anonymousreply 114October 7, 2023 10:51 PM

I know you're joking, R113, but ....

by Anonymousreply 115October 7, 2023 11:25 PM

Agree R114. I'm going through a phase of watching videos on YT of homeless addicts. Anyway, they will rob and pillage for their drugs, over food or anything else. But they are always covered in tattoos. Where I live it's $50 bucks to sit in the artists' chair. How do the poor pay for hellishly expensive and PAINFUL garbage like tats? I know some guys get them in prison, but women with sleeves and anyone with face tats? Holy shit. Poor choices....all day long.

by Anonymousreply 116October 7, 2023 11:49 PM

Some people will argue that tattoos have nothing to do with education level, and will happily point out the fact that there are plenty of highly educated people with tattoos. This, of course, is true. However, I would be willing to bet that most of these highly-educated tattooed people are from low class, trashy backgrounds.

by Anonymousreply 117October 7, 2023 11:54 PM

I don't like them. I've never told anyone I didn't like their tattoos - to each their own - but I've never wanted to get one done. I just don't get their appeal.

by Anonymousreply 118October 8, 2023 12:23 AM

R118 They appeal to people who are boring and have nothing to offer the world by making them believe that tattoos will make them more interesting. The reality is the most interesting people who have the most offer don’t look outwardly different. They look quite ordinary. This is because they don’t TRY to be interesting. They just are.

by Anonymousreply 119October 8, 2023 12:38 AM

R109 I'd like to introduce you to the latest in poor jewelry judgment permanence.

A local pizza restaurant last year offered free pizza for life to anybody who got their restaurant’s logo tattooed on their arm. That pizza restaurant went out of business a few months ago. I wonder if there were any fools who tattooed themselves to get free pizza.
The saddest tats are the ones that are disfiguring otherwise hot, muscular guys who would look fantastic but for the inky Post-it notes randomly ruining their bodies.

And just imagine their sadness (that they will carry to the grave) that R88 will never, ever fuck them!

by Anonymousreply 122October 8, 2023 1:26 AM

Maybe a lot did, r121, and that's why they went out of business!!

This ugly, famewhoring fuck really does tattoos no favor by having so many of them. He has his ex inked on his neck and constantly juts his chin up and sucks in his cheeks whenever he spies a camera. He looks like a moron.

One here and there? No. But entire sleeves, necks, backs, legs all inked? Yes. It either makes people look dirty/trashy or sort of reptilian. I had a yoga teacher who thought it would be cool to have a HUGE tattoo of PeeWee Herman (of blessed memory) put on her back. Every time she turned around to demo something, I had to laugh. It was well-done, but just stupid-looking.

I went to yet another wedding this past weekend where some of the women looked so silly with a pretty dress and then all that ugly ink.

Is there any evidence that tattoos are literally low-class? That is, is there a visible dearth of tattoos among conventionally upperclass people (private schools, Wall Street jobs, law firms, exclusive country clubs, etc.) as opposed to the masses?

by Anonymousreply 130October 10, 2023 6:11 PM

[...]

by Anonymousreply 131October 10, 2023 6:44 PM

I don’t like them, but with my age and looks, beggars can’t be choosers.

by Anonymousreply 132October 10, 2023 6:57 PM

No, I don't. I have two myself.

I don't care for the neck, face or scalp / head / ears / eyes etc being tattooed, or those that have completely covered themselves. But in general, I like tattoos.

by Anonymousreply 133October 10, 2023 6:58 PM

I know a lot of actors are unstable to begin with, but it is especially stupid to ink up and then have to spend thousands of dollars in CGI or makeup to cover up the tattoos so they can work.

by Anonymousreply 134October 10, 2023 7:22 PM

r130- Tattoo parlors were usually around the port and in the seedier neighborhoods where the customers are. Obviously, that's changed but I can't recall many tattoo shops in upscale malls.

Men were more likely than women to report a tattoo, but the highest rates of tattooing were found among women in their 20s (29.4%). Men and women ages 20-39 were most likely to have been tattooed, as were men with lower levels of education, tradesmen, and women with live-out partners. Tattooing was also associated with risk-taking behaviours, including smoking, greater numbers of lifetime sexual partners, cannabis use (women only) and ever having depression (men only).

They don't bother me as they are so ubiquitous now. If a person has a few, I figure they're just following trends. Sleeves, neck and/or face tats, though? I assume the person has mental health issues and/or was molested as a child.

by Anonymousreply 136October 10, 2023 7:36 PM

They can look impressive. On the right arms.

by Anonymousreply 137October 10, 2023 7:43 PM

They can look ok on younger people but what happens when they get old? Fading tattoos on sagging skin ain't pretty.

by Anonymousreply 138October 10, 2023 8:30 PM

I keep telling everybody I’m going to be the only person in the old age home with no tattoos.

by Anonymousreply 139October 10, 2023 8:41 PM
Is there any evidence that tattoos are literally low-class?

If you need to have it explained to you, then you wouldn't understand the explanation anyway. This is further demonstrated by your use of the word "literally."

by Anonymousreply 140October 11, 2023 10:19 AM

How is my use of the word "literally" incorrect, R140, when I'm asking about the actual class differences between having tattoos and not having them? In any case your first sentence doesn't make sense; are you saying it's self-evident that tattoos are low-class and only an irredeemably obtuse person wouldn't know that? Hence my second question about the evidence.

by Anonymousreply 141October 11, 2023 11:42 AM

Thanks to this thread, I realised two people I know have tattoos. I never noticed them before. They're low-key and small designs, not sleeves or necks.

Ben Affleck deserves some kind of award for his appalling back tattoo.

Shaved pubic hair makes a guy's junk l look like turkey parts. And, no, it does NOT make it look bigger. It makes it look adolescent.

A naturally smooth guy with an epic tattoo. That’s what I would acquire if I had the means to do so.

by Anonymousreply 148October 13, 2023 12:42 AM

While there was speculation that Genest committed suicide, r147, the coroner ruled his death as accidental. His family didn't believe he suicided, because he had several new projects he was excited about and had recently gotten engaged.

He was very drunk, and had gone out on a 3 story balcony to have a ciggie. Occam's razor says he lost his balance and fell.
. I think he realized how bad he fucked up his life with tats.

by Anonymousreply 150October 13, 2023 1:53 AM

R149 It's not unreasonable to think that someone who does this to his face could be self-destructive.

by Anonymousreply 151October 26, 2023 3:40 PM

No, that's not an unreasonable [italic]thought[/italic], r151. My point was that a previous poster stated [italic]as a fact[/italic] that Genest had killed himself, and even suggested that he'd done so because of his tattoos, even though the coroner had ruled that it was an accident.

That is not reasonable.

'Jesus Christ, what a bunch of prissy old queens.'

I hated them at 22 when the fad was starting and thought what is wrong with these people? I saw it as scarification then and now. You must have quite a few. Large and aging like milk.

I think the ones who do their eyes and then go blind are special.

by Anonymousreply 154October 27, 2023 1:10 PM

The generic ones like barbed wire or a Celtic design around the bicep are pretty sad. Millions of people must have those.

by Anonymousreply 155October 28, 2023 10:52 PM

Hideous

by Anonymousreply 156October 29, 2023 12:38 AM

It depends, usually yes but certain people, they work. For instance I hate cops but that tatted cop from Jan. 6, Michael Fanone, is hot as fuck.

by Anonymousreply 157October 29, 2023 12:47 AM

Does anybody here have a tattoo of pubic hair to replace hair loss or over lasered private area?

by Anonymousreply 158November 6, 2023 1:59 AM

Some of this seems really neurotic. Too many tatoos all over the place is annoying. But bitches on this thread act like the slightest blemish to skin is an imperfection that must never be tolerated. Deeply neurotic. Do the same people freak the fuck out at any other blemish, including body hair, or do they just fall into hysterics about tatoos?

by Anonymousreply 159November 6, 2023 2:17 AM
The way that I was raised, the only people who had tattoos were men who had been in the service. They only had one tatt, usually a representation of the branch of service or unit they had served in. It could never be seen unless those men were shirtless.

I don’t know how you never saw a guy who had been in the service who had a tattoo on his upper or lower arm.

I’m 65, I don’t have any tattoos, but I don’t care who has them. People here talk about it being a sign of being mentally ill, but I think caring so much about what other people do or look like indicates some sort of weird obSessiveness on their part. Occasionally I do see tattoos that I think look bad, but it has nothing to do with me. I have some close friends with tattoos (one has a lot). I’m more concerned with what kind of people they are.

by Anonymousreply 160November 6, 2023 2:35 AM

When my father died, I didn't handle it well. One night I drank quite a bit, had a meltdown, and carved his initials into my arm with a razor blade. I plan to cover the self-harm scar with a tattoo of his initials instead because it's less alarming when people see it.

As of right now, I wear long sleeves to cover it. A lot of people choose to cover self-harm scars or just scars in general with tattoos.

I don’t have any but I’m not ruling out ever getting one, it’s just not on the top of the list. Right now I’d rather tear out the island in the kitchen and replace the steam punk 2008 lighting fixture. Then maybe I’ll get a tattoo of a toolbox.

by Anonymousreply 162November 6, 2023 2:52 AM

Yes. Hard to think of any I've seen which have improved someone's appearance, most are the opposite, bits of random flotsam and jetsam strewn about helter skelter . I don't understand the appeal at all, it's very foreign to me, like the desire for haggis or wearing diapers as an adult

by Anonymousreply 163November 6, 2023 2:57 AM

R7 Totally agree. Sometimes abstract black spear-tip designs enhance the sexiness of dark Latin skin, but mostly they're a bad idea.

by Anonymousreply 164November 6, 2023 3:02 AM

They're the hallmark of VULGARIANS!

by Anonymousreply 165November 6, 2023 3:03 AM

One or two are good, they can even be sexy. But when they cover entire sections of their body, it is so ugly. Like impetigo.

by Anonymousreply 166November 6, 2023 3:07 AM

If this was a thread in 1967 or ‘68 it’d be about how REVOLTING long hair is on men. Other societies have had tattooing, it’s not a new thing. Trends happen, you can’t make them go away, but enjoy the ranting.

by Anonymousreply 171November 8, 2023 3:31 AM

They're pretty much the new black and are everywhere in some pubs and workplaces. Some people are practically covered in them and some just have a few small ones scattered on their bare skin. It's a booming industry.

by Anonymousreply 172November 8, 2023 3:58 AM

A great way to weed out people. No one in my family has ever had a tattoo. In our social circle it is still a low class thing. I don't want to stop it or discourage anyone from getting a tattoo. People do what they need to do. But I will always sit in quiet judgement about that and many other things. I love the view from my high horse. Always have.
