Alexis : [to Krystle] I just can't wait for the day when I see you walking out of this house carrying the same two cheap plastic suitcases that you walked in here with.

Lol. One of my favorite scenes of all time.

Dynasty clips always sound like what rural ‘80s gays thought how rich women actually acted, always affecting such nouveaux-riches clichés. Champagne on tap, demands for luxury, and dressed to the nines while tossing off rather middlebrow insults recited with more attitude than wit.

I’ll be watching

R4 Let me guess. You went to Riverdale or York then maybe BU. After that you worked at Barney's and are currently looking for a new job.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 4, 2023 2:22 AM |
r4 Yeah, all those those damn rural gays out there!
Oh please, Dynasty was a soap opera which dealt with cliche and parody like most fiction. And it was brilliant. But wait, rich women don't demand luxury and dress to the nines? You really must be rural!
But you're right on one account, no black woman would have been in that position in the 80's.

I always like Dallas better the Dynasty. At its peak, Dynasty was campy and shallow. Dallas, at its peak, was more realistic with better casting and compelling family friction.

Weeeeeell, anything can be rented these days!

I’ll agree Dallas was better. Sue Ellen was a fucking force to reckon with.

Can anyone chime in on "Dynasty" night at gay bars in the mid-1980's. My friend Rick stated that at "Number One, Fifth Avenue" in San Diego, "Dynasty" night was a hoot. Everytime, Alexis wore a different outfit, you'd call out your drink order. You'd have to finish the drink, before Alexis changed outfits. When Alexis wore a hat, you'd have shots. I didn't officially come out, until a few years later.

Yes! I cleared my Wednesday nights for "Dynasty" night at a gay bar in Silverlake (can't remember the name).
This was during the height of "video bars" so you'd drink and watch Eurythmics and Duran Duran videos on the TVs (not screens, these were old-fashioned TVs bolted to the ceiling). Much discussion of last week's cliffhanger (did Claudia REALLY throw her baby off the building?). Then at 8:59 pm the videos would switch off and ABC would come on.
Everyone would cheer at the dramatic theme song! And cheer even louder at the AND JOAN COLLINS AS ALEXIS title card (Alexis slipping her fur seductively off one shoulder). There would always be a few queens who were decidedly NOT into "Dynasty" who would talk during the show — and the "Dynasty" queens would furiously hush them with hisses. If there was a shirtless hunk everyone would hoot and holler.
At the commercial breaks everyone would gossip about whatever ludicrous scene they'd just seen. Of course everyone was smoking like crazy. Absolut was being pushed to the gay community and it seemed most of the drinks were Absolut-and-whatever. (I stuck with beer.)
At 9:59 there'd be a freeze-frame of this week's ridiculous cliffhanger. By 10:05 half the bar would have cleared out. And now you had a chance to cruise the handsome guy you'd been eying throughout "Dynasty."

It sucked, I hated Dallas. Heteronormative version of Dynasty.
On another note, my one time brush with greatness was when I was working in a very fancy restaurant in Santa Barbara and Diahann Carroll came for one of the brunches dressed like she could have just walked off the set. Big hat and all.

Was watching this morning before work and one of my favorite scenes of all-time played...
Alexis addresses shamed Congressman Neal McVane.
"Get out of my sight you miserable has-been."

R20 was low rent. Across town in WeHo at Revolver they had a huge video screen in front of the DJ booth above the bar off to the right. It was the old school rear projector kind that used to cost thousands of dollars. That place was packed with handsome young athletic preppy men in polos every night Dynasty was on. They went with the theme. It was the one day in the middle of the week you could bank on being full of gay men. Long before the breeder/bachelorette/Queer women invasions started. Mixed drinks were only $5 dollars.

I just watched Dallas last year, and eventually I found myself hoping that Sue Ellen would die. That terrible mullet wig they put her in around season 6 or so was very hard to look at.

Sable: But that's what Pavilion Resorts does, dahling. It acquires rundown properties that have been poorly maintained. Like yourself.

I think both shows were best in the first seasons... Dallas as a mini-series, Dynasty as a 13-episode season one, when it stopped being a drama and turned on the melodrama tap. D
ynasty was well plotted through the end of season two and the dialogue was hilarious, if increasingly over the top. Dallas was a different show, run by men. It was never entirely awful right up to the end. Dynasty recovered a bit in the last season as well, thanks mostly to Stephanie Beacham.
But the minute any of these soapy shows prioritizes plots over characters they become live action cartoons or daytime with nighttime budgets. I think you need both plot and character, obviously, but to keep it in the realm of the possible you need to emphasize characters. As crazy as Alexis was in season two, everything she did was consistent with her character: a pleasure seeker whose choice was taken from her who'd come back for revenge after bouncing around the world trying to fill a void with high style and hijinks. Collins played her pitch perfectly, until they ran out of gas and simplified the character. Same with Pamela Sue Martin. They had absolutely no idea what to do with Fallon past the return of her mother. They should have played that as an active love/hate relationship, with the two of them constantly messing with each other.

Good times!
