A pre-emptive question to anyone who's going to try and defend these scumbags: why didn't they just hire escorts? The answer, of course, being that they wanted to exploit people, that's what actually gets them off. So save the "these guys knew what was expected of them" bullshit.

FFS - it's not "exploiting" unless there is a quid pro quo.
Unless there was some sort of promise to work as an AF model, they were paid to go to a party.
If you don't know that getting paid to go to a party makes you a hooker, or at least a presumptive hooker, you're simply too stupid to live. If you went to a party to party, then unless you were held captive, anything you did once there was your own decision, and again, not exploitative.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | October 2, 2023 7:47 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 85 | October 3, 2023 1:37 AM |
The ONLY thing that victimized these guys is their own stupidity.
At a certain point, you have to accept people have agency and make horribly poor choices because they are looking for a shortcut to the lifestyles of the rich and famous.
You don't have to be a veteran model to know that modeling gigs are NOT booked this way. Several of the guys admit they KNEW sex was involved, but claim they didn't know what was expected...uh, sex? You cannot tell me that when these guys discussed this situation with friends and family, not one person told them it was sketchy. But they went anyway - or they didn't tell people because they knew it was sketchy and went anyway.
I'm NOT saying what Jeffries did wasn't gross and likely illegal. But, people crying victim now are looking for a big payday, nothing more, nothing less. Let's not canonize them as martyrs and saints whose virtue, purity, and innocence was burned at the alter of the wicked homosexualist CEO.

R89 Same here! I'll add, in my randy 20s I never wanted anything from the hot 30-something dudes except some good dick, and I was always delighted to share mine in return.
I can empathize with these guys, in that Jeffries and his ilk are vile, sleazy, and the very worst stereotypes of the superficial, narcissistic gay male. I can absolutely believe that they would use their money and influence to exploit the ambitions and vulnerability of guys looking for a break into modeling. But I also can't relate to these guys' situation on most levels, because I didn't pursue a line of work that was in any way overtly based on my looks. I'm certainly far from model material (far from even model-adjacent!), but I could look plenty worse and I've learned to be grateful and comfortable in my own skin. All of these MeToo situations we're learning about now -- I'd hope that if I were in a situation where someone was inviting me to a 1-on-1 meeting in a hotel room, or offering me money to "model" or "dance" at a gig in a faraway destination that in any way seemed questionable, that I'd have the good sense to protect myself and refuse. Depending on the circumstances, I'm sure it's easier said than done in many cases. I digress.
Any-hoo. If there is a shred of truth to these guys' allegations, then I hope they get some justice if that's what they're after.

R88 You missed two things: some were told this would not involve sex. If you were an aspiring model, wouldn't you go to a party wheee the campaign lead photographer of a big label takes pictures of you? And second: If your drink is spiked you cannot leave. I taught in hs for many years. One day one of my seniors asked if he could get an extension on his paper, because he was being flown to NY to model for A&F. He was not a traditional magazine model, but a hockey player with a rougher look than anyone I had seen on an AF page. When he came back, we sat down and he told me about what had happened. He wasn't modeling underwear, but would be a warrior who would be totally naked, except for a large broadsword in front of his privates. He was told to shave all of his body hair, as they didn't want to see pubes or chest hair. I asked if they thought warriors were hairless and he said that that was the AF look, so he did what they asked. Then he told me that there was a PA on the set who kept staring at him and smiling. After the shoot, the PA asked him out. He made and excuse that he was going to dinner with his relatives, so he declined. Apparently, the atmosphere was pretty creepy; the photographers were very professional, but the hangers-on were strange. I saw the shots later, which were very nicely done, but had absolutely nothing to do with underwear...or clothing, unless they were selling a cape and broadsword.

Bradberry had briefly worked in porn and Pall had been paid for sex before meeting Jacobson.”
by Anonymous | reply 133 | October 5, 2023 2:28 AM |
Not sure if Pall was an escort per se but I’m guessing he was kept by a sugar daddy. I. The BBC article he says that he was asked by someone who had given him significant financial support to sub for him in a sex encounter with Jeffries. He was told the more he did sexually the more doors it would open for him. So in Pall’e case I don’t see the clear victim role he is playing at. He had traded sex for money (or maybe other financial supports like rent/housing) and knew that seeing Jeffries would involve sex. Pall always presents himself as a powerless victim when he talks about his many trades of sec for opportunity.

by Anonymous | reply 135 | October 5, 2023 2:40 AM |
r133 Oh I thought you meant the BBC article, I missed the Belfast Telegraph one, apologies
r134 You don't see him as a victim simply because you don't want to. Being told you can stop at any time, but being trapped somewhere fairly remote, with no way to leave, and surrounded by staff for the freaks exploiting you...that all sounds fine with you?
As Dennis Reynolds would say, it's the implication

I've now watched the documentary. Panorama's The Abercrombie Guys: The Dark Side of Cool.
Pall is one of the two star witnesses along with another guy, who was a Marine and then dreamed to become a model.
I came away from the documentary better informed and with much more empathy for these two guys and their experiences. The set up is what I already knew. They were both guys who didn't have a good chance to be working successful male models. In fact, one of them now realizes that was part of the scenario. Pall, less so.
The marine had done a bit of porn. Pall was already being pimped out by his sugar daddy. When he was aspiring to be a model.
But as happens with personal interviews, the way they tell this sordid tale really humanizes it. They were both naive and unsophisticated and they both really hoped that this A&F connection was going to lead to A&F work as models. Pall had already worked in A&F as greeter in HS and the A&F "world" and "aesthetic" really pushed all his buttons. Pall grew up in a dysfunctional family.
OK sorry for the wordiness. The documentary invites an attorney who counsels in sex trafficking, and he explains the semi-secret, VERY complex and highly well oiled administration put in place by Jeffries and his BF and his assistants, to recruit and traffic deluded guys (who might like to be models) into their circuit of organized sex parties. Went on for years. It's FUCKING SORDID and likely CRIMINAL.
These two guys didn't stand a chance against and I came away from the documentary with a lot of empathy. Even though I think Pall is broken and also manipulative.
One got the impression Jeffries and his lieutenants entrapped many dozens of gullible guys over the years, most who were not officially paid whores, and many were aspiring models, but had already been judged by A&F to be unacceptable to be models, but acceptable to be orgy workers. They were paid $2500 cash per orgy.
Creepiest takeaway - an ex model, a woman, who has her own agency, and is discussing the working conditions for young people working as models, and who the system creates the conditions for sexual abuse, and she cracks a huge smile when she explains this.
Sordid sordid sordid documentary. The people on both sides of the events. The documentary itself. Very manipulative. Quite trashy of BBC One.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | October 7, 2023 11:24 AM |
Bonus: there is a sordid HIV angle, of course. One straight guy duped into this orgy circuit is pretty sure he was roofied and raped in Morocco at an immense weekend orgy Jeffries had organised. Wakes up with a condom up his butt. Later seroconverts. All "allegedly". And this victim's identity is hidden.

by Anonymous | reply 139 | October 7, 2023 12:40 PM |
Well I'm a bit better for it because I had quite negative impression of Pall for several years but this documentary really humanized him and I can understand his path in life has been.... complicated. Also I learned how sordid rich people can be with the power of their money to make it happen.

It's almost like predators deliberately go after people who can be easily dismissed if they speak out. Nah, just sit around waiting for the perfect victim to show up, meanwhile dismiss the guy who's been repeatedly sexually abused as "broken". Gee, I wonder why.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | October 7, 2023 1:30 PM |
The noseless guy used to be a regular at the West Village dog run. There were rumors he was a pimp, but no confirmation until now. Nice guy, once you got to know him. Said the lack of a nose was due to botched surgery, but we always wondered why he didn't sue the doctors and get enough money for reconstruction.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | October 7, 2023 1:41 PM |
I called Pall broken, previously up thread, and I think he is. Not because of this reported scenario. And I'm the guy who watched the documentary with is half based on Pall and he speaks generously and I changed my negative opinion about him. I think he's had a rough go since he was a teen. Bad decisions but also bad people around him. A lot o them.

r143 Well go on then, explain why you think he's "broken".
by Anonymous | reply 144 | October 7, 2023 2:22 PM |
Paul seems to crop up every few years as survivor of homophobia and sexual abuse in the modeling industry but he never cut it as a model and was a kept boy with aspirations to be a model.
He's 35 years old and writes this on his YouTube channel: "Barrett has been a professional Life Coach for the last 8 years. He's worked with CEOs of fortune 500 companies, celebrities, Middle Eastern Royalty, and everyday incredible humans - because that is what we all are."
Watch a few of his YouTube videos and make up your own mind where he is and how he got there. To me, he's all over the map in his focus. He's not that bright, either. To me, he seems rudderless. Reading between the lines, I have suspected that he has not established a viable career in this 20s or 30s.
In this sense, I consider him broken. I don't think he's nasty or that he has bad will.

None of them had any suspicions about why they were receiving these offers?
None of them thought about turning around and walking out the door?
Sometimes if it sounds too good to be true it probably isn't. And perhaps they were targeted because it was obvious they weren't the smartest kids in class.
I tend to think they knew exactly what they were trading - whether they were smart or dim - and are angry that they were deceived and didn't get from the creeps what they were promised.
No one comes out of these arrangements with clean hands.

None of them thought about turning around and walking out the door? - this is discussed in the doc. Watch if you are curious.

r145 Hell of a lot of words to avoid admitting that the shitty way he's been treated likely led to how he is now. But I guess it's more important for you to feel superior while you claim to be empathic.
[quote]Paul seems to crop up every few years as survivor of homophobia and sexual abuse in the modeling industry but he never cut it as a model and was a kept boy with aspirations to be a model.
In your previous post, where you claim to have discovered empathy, you pointed out how Jeffries and his goons seemed to deliberately target guys who wanted to be a model but would never make it. And now, just a couple of posts later, here you are using that to dismiss his claims about abuse in the modelling industry.
by Anonymous | reply 156 | October 7, 2023 4:05 PM |
I never dismissed his claims. You have a reading problem and are looking for fight, too. I bothered to go and watch the documentary after reading all the snark on this thread. The two young guys interviewed definitely had a revolting experience with Jeffries and his friends.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | October 7, 2023 4:08 PM |
My take is that he was manipulated by his sugar daddy, who was pimping him, in different ways for a few years, it seems. And he was manipulated by Jeffries' lieutenants. And the mechanism was his burning desire to become a successful model. But if you watch the documentary, you'll see that as far as A&F experience, those people had already decided he was an appropriate whore for their parties, not to become an A&F model. And it was a pattern. So yeah I think people victimized Pall and used his dreams and delusions to do so.

by Anonymous | reply 167 | October 8, 2023 1:24 PM |
Pall sounds like he's always been a vapid queen, which was part of what made him a target for manipulation. The notion that someone has to be a "perfect" victim to be a "real victim" is unfair and misses the point of how this works. Pall seems like he's never quite left the vapid queen zone--naming his plants, low-end life coaching, all sad. The heyday of life coaching was about 20 years ago---psychotherapists would take courses to branch into it, but most of them weren't able to make much money from it and gave it up as a specialty. There isn't that much of a market and Pall probably isn't getting the small number of high rollers seeking it.
Bradberry sounds more sympathetic---he wasfrom bumbfuck Texas, he wanted to be star but had no pipeline to show business at that point. No mention, though of his relationship with Trevor Knight and whether that was beginning to happen. I suspect Knight probably knew better how the world worked and did have a foothold in legit show business. Bradberry seems willing to admit his naivety and articulate what was happening. Significantly, he has a normal job as a lower mid-range fed and a husband.
Not much discussion of Les Wexner--Jeffries boss and crony of Jeffrey Epstein. Famously one of the wealthiest guys in Columbus and his being gay is an open secret there and in his businesses. he had to know what was going on.

Just watched the BBC documentary. At some point those guys should have said NO. I think what made them submit was the chance of being famous. Pall comes across as mercenary. I’m all for the #metoo movement, but these guys come off as very mercenary. And the straight guy who tested positive for HIV? He WENT BACK. Even after he claimed that he was raped? I’m a sexual assault survivor too. I’ve avoided subsequent sexual assaults by stating my boundaries. He wanted to feed his family? Join the military or something!

R179: they were insecure and had not gotten themselves connected into one of the usual paths toward modeling or acting. Paul and Bradberry were too short for modeling and would have gotten that message if they'd been able to follow a legit path. These guys wanted something glamorous, well-paying, and attractive, which over rule "logic". Jeffries and company knew how to sniff out guys like this.

I listened to the podcast. They open with Barrett and I rolled my eyes throughout his testimony. He was full of regret. I get that. I empathize with that. It was sleazy what happened to him. But not illegal. And he just played "the victim" too easily for me. Maybe it's me, but I have no tolerance for that.
Now, the poor kid guy was most likely raped and who most likely contracted HIV because of the A&F guys? That was heartbreaking. And clearly illegal.
I think Mike and Co are vile humans. But they seemed to be savvy enough to make what they did BARELY above the letter of the law.

There seems to be this trend of people in their 30's and 40's who gave up their youth in pursuit of fame and money - be it acting or modeling - who then wake-up and realize they've aged and have no viable career. And they're bitter.
When the optimism of youth fades and then you realize you have no viable job skills - don't start lashing out at everybody else for your mistakes.
People probably told them time and time again that they needed to have something to fall back on, but there's this 1 in a million chance that THIS time, I'm going to make it and it will all be worthwhile.
It's sad, but it's the chance you take when you rely only on your looks.

People can't seem to do grey issues. Barrett and the other guy aren't "pure" victims however it seems to be arguable that they were sex trafficked. Listen to the sex trafficking lawyer in the documentary.
