Calista looks awesome, Molly is unrecognisable.

by Anonymousreply 1September 28, 2023 3:38 PM

I thought Tom Hollander was well cast but the makeup is an abortion.

by Anonymousreply 2September 28, 2023 3:39 PM

I was going to say the same thing, R2. He looks nothing like Capote in that photo.

by Anonymousreply 3September 28, 2023 3:41 PM

Calista should wear that look ALL the time.

Tom Hollander looks like Jeffrey Tambor.

by Anonymousreply 4September 28, 2023 3:42 PM

Wow that's a lot of CGI on Calista. Lee Radziwill was in her early thirties when the Swans takes place, if they are keeping 1965 as the setting. Calista is 58.

This is Eldergay Catnip. A season about the feud between that star-fucker Truman Capote and the drunken socialite broads who eventually got tired of his shit?

I want to hear from Sigourney Weaver about this era. She grew up in it, and knew all of these people as a teenager. Her father was Pat Weaver, head of NBC and rival to Bill Paley. Her mother and Babe Paley were contemporaries, although Mrs. Weaver was far more grounded. Siggy even played Babe Paley in one of the Capote movies.

RIP - Treat Williams

Oooh! I will watch. I saw a documentary about Truman on Hulu last night and it was very good, but kind of sad the way he unraveled. George Plimpton had people on tape commenting and telling stories and Truman himself too. But the Swans. OMG. I doubt anyone can do Babe Paley justice. What a beauty! Marella Agnelli, Slim Keith, Lee Radziwill, etc. The documentary made me want to get the real dirt on William Paley who they claim was a disgusting pig when it came to women. The thing is, Truman was a writer. A brilliant writer. And in his early work, his writing was influenced by his family environment. The characters he created were from his family and the people he knew as a child and a young man. So when he became this huge celebrity after In Cold Blood, he hung out with his "swans" all the time. He spoke to them daily, etc. as someone in the documentary said (maybe Truman himself) What made them think he wouldn't write about them? Personally I think they hoped he would write about them, but didn't like the version of themselves they saw through his eyes. They claim he betrayed confidences, but in fact I think they did by telling him things. Some of the shit they confided in him, knowing he was an incurable gossip and name dropper, they should never have said. It was as if they dared him and he took the dare.

This looks amazing. Wonderful cast!

by Anonymousreply 9September 28, 2023 3:58 PM

The Swans all turned on him except for CZ Guest. If you can, watch the documentary on Hulu before this comes out so you can be up to speed on all of it. The New York high society environment plays a huge role in propelling Truman into that stratosphere.

I just read the story from Esquire, and can completely understand why they had to cut him out.

I am going to watch the fuck out of this.

Babe Paley used to post regularly on DL.

by Anonymousreply 12September 28, 2023 4:49 PM

First thought, these pictures are so Photoshopped that it's hard to tell who the actors are or who they're playing. Second, Demi more looks like Jessica Lange trying to play glam! And yes on Tom Hollander looking like Jeffrey Tambor or current day Chevy Chase...

by Anonymousreply 13September 28, 2023 4:54 PM

Roddy McDowall was a queen who knew how to keep his mouth shut. Thus, he had a huge, diverse circle of friends. Managed to stay friends with Elizabeth Taylor, Sybil Burton, and Joan Rivers. His journals, etc. not to be revealed until 100 years after his death. Both "The Swans" and the little swine Capote should have known better, regarding secrets/gossip...

by Anonymousreply 14September 28, 2023 4:58 PM

Babe Paley was almost always photographed head on due to the prominent bump on her nose.

Yet, she was known to remove her bridge in front of others, which replaced her missing front teeth.

Hollander looks like Lorne Michaels doing an impression of Dr Evil (who is based on Lorne Michaels)

I don't know about this series. Truman was in a long term relationship that fell apart as he became more and more involved with NY high society. His boyfriend allegedly told him he was wasting himself and wasting his time with these pointless relationships and the gossip. he was disgusted with it all. Sure they dropped him, R14, but they should have known better too. IMO they were complicit in their own mess. The book, Answered Prayers, about the Swans, was never found. I'm talking about the manuscript. Truman got a $1 million advance and he had to publish a few chapters in Esquire because he needed more money, and he said he finished it, and his ward insisted he did finish it and she saw him working diligently on it, and a few close friends say he finished it, but no one could find the manuscript and the incomplete "book" was published but the mystery remains. A close friend of his, Dotson Rader, and Jay McInerney both say that one day someone will find the manuscript and it'll be worth something. But IMO it is possible one of those women had it destroyed.

No Gloria Guinness?

by Anonymousreply 18September 28, 2023 5:12 PM

R18, Jack Dunphy was a successful novelist and a playwright himself and he was with Truman from 1948 until his death. Truman had dalliances with other guys, but Dunphy was his forever love. He and Dunphy were estranged during his time of infatuation with high society. and they had a rift over Truman's desperate partying with the Studio 54 crowd, Warhol, etc. when Tru got dumped by the swans. But they maintained their relationship even with all that. It was an important, significant relationship. And no where on the cast list for this new Ryan Murphy extravaganza is there any mention of him. His character is not part of Murphy's story.

by Anonymousreply 19September 28, 2023 7:06 PM

Looks like Brando in The Island of Dr. Moreau

by Anonymousreply 20September 28, 2023 7:20 PM

Please tell me that this is not the Ryan Murphy show that kim kardashian is in.

by Anonymousreply 21September 28, 2023 7:25 PM

There was a clip in the Hulu Documentary of Truman with Dick Cavett, ( in fact several with Dick Cavett) and Truman claimed that while Marlon Brando was a brilliant actor he was really dumb. Truman was making public appearances drunk and coked up and that part was sad to watch. I think I'm going to go back and reread some of his work. I'll start with Other Voices, Other Rooms.

by Anonymousreply 22September 28, 2023 7:28 PM

More tears have been shed over answered prayers than unanswered ones......

by Anonymousreply 23September 28, 2023 8:22 PM

R23, Thank you, St. Therese.

by Anonymousreply 24September 28, 2023 8:34 PM

It is curious that, having access to a lot of beautiful actresses, the women cast in this are all less beautiful (much less elegant) than the original ones.

Who plays Marella?

by Anonymousreply 25September 28, 2023 8:44 PM

[quote]His journals, etc. not to be revealed until 100 years after his death.

By which time no one will know who any of the people mentioned were.

by Anonymousreply 26September 28, 2023 8:51 PM

R26, 2084.
