I’ve never watched this film despite always intending to. I’ve always liked Shirley MacLaine so I’m excited. Is it any good?
“The Apartment” (1960) will air on PBS (NYC) tonight at 9pm

Brilliant movie that I watch every holiday season.

Hope Holiday was a highlight of the film as the tavern pickup with the scratchy voice. She went on to become a movie producer, including this one.

I've seen it, but I'm not crazy about it. Lots of misogynistic stereotypes.
But then again, I'm a lesbian.

R3 maybe you shouldn’t watch old movies with modern lenses on. That annoys me.

It's superb.

I could watch it again.

OP, it's a first-rate movie with great nostalgia value. Shirl is brilliant, as always, and Fred McMurray is terrific, too. Have fun watching it!

I'm so glad, R4! I live to annoy you!

R3, for every misogynist stereotype, there are two misandrist stereotypes.
It's a kind-hearted movie. I don't see any hatefulness in it. The pivotal line in the film occurs when the protagonist is admonished, "Be a mensch. You know what that means? A human being."

I LOVE this movie. I'm a woman-- not a lesbian-- but I feel like this movie shows the constraints on women rather than stereotypes. I think it's one of the best movies about loneliness.

The line “Why do people have to love people anyway?” gets me every time.

Great movie. Enjoy.

It was rather forward-thinking for a comedy-drama like this to win Best Picture.

It was a terrific film. I am glad I watched it. Shirley MacLaine was absolutely lovely and Jack Lemmon was amazing.

A fascinating impression of life in NYC in 1960. Love the apartments, the clothes, the set decoration.

There have been numerous threads on this movie over the years. OP thinks he’s introducing us to something new.

Another Home Run from Mr Wilder.

Ssssshhhh! Nobody tell R16 about the Golden Girls threads. I think he might be too fragile to take it.

It is the last wide screen black and white film to win best picture.
