British television and film and the huge numbers of mixed races couples

Can anyone explain why nearly every single. Brit produced show has at least one mixed raced couple?. Usually a white man and black woman? The portrayals seem to be disproportionately out of synch with reality and it seems very forced. We started watching another Brit show last night and, sure enough. One adult couple with a white male and black female and one little kid boyfriend and girlfriend, same thing.

It seems even more odd on fantasy type shows. Everyone is white with maybe one Asian thrown in, but the king/queen, evil ruler etc is always black. Is this a required formula or just by chance ?

by Anonymousreply 39September 24, 2023 8:58 PM

Can you explain why this matters to you?

by Anonymousreply 1September 23, 2023 11:57 AM

Op can you explain why you’re a moron?

by Anonymousreply 2September 23, 2023 12:03 PM

They have ethnic quotas in their programming.

by Anonymousreply 3September 23, 2023 12:04 PM

It’s why everyone thinks the BBC is biased. Because they are. Tory (or worse) in the boardroom and newsroom; woke to Marxist in the writers room. They let them have their creative fun, as long as they never get their hands on the power levers.

by Anonymousreply 4September 23, 2023 12:12 PM

[quote]It’s why everyone thinks the BBC is biased.

Many, if not most of these programs are not from the BBC.

by Anonymousreply 5September 23, 2023 12:39 PM

R1 Is OP not supposed to take notice of the world around him or have any curiosity, just because race is involved?

by Anonymousreply 6September 23, 2023 12:39 PM

Do the black wives/girlfriends ever bitch about sizemeat inadequacy?

by Anonymousreply 7September 23, 2023 12:49 PM

Some people think every British television program is made by the BBC.

by Anonymousreply 8September 23, 2023 12:58 PM

I have noticed. And the network morning shows here in the US.

by Anonymousreply 9September 23, 2023 1:16 PM

OP went to Hallmark and purchased a race card.

I can guess that they are a white American, who more than any other group in the world, is obsessed with categorizing and defining people based on their narrow and intolerant POV.

If they aren’t American, then they’re Eurotrash asshats.

by Anonymousreply 10September 23, 2023 1:20 PM

It's just to piss off people like the OP.

Which makes it totally worth doing!

by Anonymousreply 11September 23, 2023 1:32 PM

I agree with OP, I have noticed it too and it absolutely is disproportionate to reality. I have to wonder who TBTB are trying to appease. It seems to me that they are pushing mixed-race couples at the expense of all-black couples. I have wondered how the black community feels about always being paired with a white spouse. I personally would like to see more black couples represented as well as mixed-race couples. THAT is reality and it has nothing to do with being a racist. In fact, I think it is racist to not have black couples and all-black families on shows.

by Anonymousreply 12September 23, 2023 2:12 PM

I live in a very white part of England and I have two cousins one male one female who are married to people from the African Carribbean community. I have a third cousin who is married to someone of mixed race (half Fijian) and of course they all have mixed race children. My nephew is going out with a mixed race girl of white British and East Asian decent. I think some of the shows under represent reality actually.

by Anonymousreply 13September 23, 2023 2:34 PM

Do you believe that there are still black couples out there? I know there are but they are rarely shown on British shows anymore (at least on the ones I watch on PBS and BritBox). THEY are most definitely under-represented.

by Anonymousreply 14September 23, 2023 2:47 PM

R13, my comment is for you. I just noticed that you said that you live in a very white part of England so maybe you are unaware that there are a lot of black couples in other parts of England.

by Anonymousreply 15September 23, 2023 2:54 PM

The only time it jars for me is when, in real life, the racial dimension would get a mention (e.g. crime dramas like Vera, were it might be a motive), but absolutely nothing is said.

by Anonymousreply 16September 23, 2023 2:54 PM

I don't recall seeing any mixed race couples in Badger's Drift.

by Anonymousreply 17September 23, 2023 3:09 PM

I was watching Call the Midwife the other day and the percentage of black characters didn’t stand out to me, but the way they were treated seemed overly optimistic. I don’t mean to be critical of the show because I don’t see another option. It’s supposed to be a feel-good show. But I watched a few episodes where the black nurse was homesick and so much of what she she was reacting to (mostly people protesting immigration) seemed like it probably wasn’t as half as bad as what a black nurse visiting people in their homes would actually have experienced. I found myself almost cringing at times thinking, “Oh, no. That guy is going to say something horrible.” And then it didn’t happen.

I’m not THAT old. I don’t remember the 1950’s and 1960’s in the U.S., but I’m pretty confident that was not the environment here. Not saying every black American was subject to explicit racism every day, but I’m guessing that an agency sending out nurses might have tended to send black nurses to black families and some white families would have had an attitudes about a black nurse providing care.

I’d be curious to hear the opinions of older folk who know the U.K. better than I do. Is the show painting a rosy picture or is it roughly accurate? Is it damaging to underplay the struggles that people experienced a generation or two ago?

by Anonymousreply 18September 23, 2023 3:10 PM

r17 Then you haven't been paying close attention, MARY!

by Anonymousreply 19September 23, 2023 3:15 PM

[quote] Usually a white man and black woman

Well historically, this was the case for most of history despite people keep pushing the idea it was the opposite. In The US, Caribbean and South America, majority of European DNA in African Americans, West Indians and South Americans is from a white male ancestor and many times that is recent DNA (grandparent or great grandparent), so not just from slavery. Many white men do find nonwhite women attractive but they are reluctant to admit this because white women will be offended at the notion.

by Anonymousreply 20September 23, 2023 3:17 PM

R20, Only if they were racist and insecure about themselves. Don't many white women find black men attractive as well?

by Anonymousreply 21September 23, 2023 3:22 PM

I can’t think of the last time US TV had a commercial with a white, blond couple or family.

by Anonymousreply 22September 23, 2023 3:28 PM

R21 The media is reluctant to show attractive dark-skinned Black women but will push biracial or admixed Black women with light skin as the beauty standard. A lot of times they will show a light skinned mixed woman with a white man as an interracial couple. But what I see in reality, is many white men who do date interracially are with dark-skinned Black women with natural hair. The theory as to why this is the case is because the media is very oriented to white women's consumer interests and they prefer mixed women who have European features in order to see themselves in these women. The media also shows dark-skinned Black men with blonde pale skinned white women but honestly, in real life, I see more mixed/light-skinned Black men with white women and most dark-skinned Black men I see are with Black women (of varying shades). Overall, the media does not reflect what I see in real life.

by Anonymousreply 23September 23, 2023 3:29 PM

R23 You’ve made quite a a study of this.

by Anonymousreply 24September 23, 2023 3:38 PM

What r4 said. It also explains why they'd rather get on a plane to cross the Atlantic for jobs instead of fighting to create a space in the entertainment industry over there like ADOS have here. Samuel L Jackson has been talking about this for years.

And to r23 point -yes, biracial and fair skinned 'black ' women are almost always cast in place of monoracial black woman -especially if they are the love interest of the leading man. Notice it's not the same for light skin or biracial men-remember when dark brown Sidney Poitier was cast as light skinned, straight haired Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall? Or on the flip side, the recent film where Emma Thompson hired the Irish biracial gigolo? Heaven forbid if a white woman hired a dark skin black man for sex in a mainstream movie!

by Anonymousreply 25September 23, 2023 4:00 PM

[quote]Many white men do find nonwhite women attractive but they are reluctant to admit this because white women will be offended at the notion.

It wouldn't occur to them to be offended by that. That's generally something that happens when the roles are reversed. A black woman being offended when a black man finds white women attractive etc. It's just not something that we would think about at all.

by Anonymousreply 26September 24, 2023 1:52 PM

R22. Was it ever common for commercials to feature a wholly blond couple or family? Blond hair has never been that common in fully mature adults in the United States, especially in men. You put blond in your group of characteristics to make it seem as if white people have been erased from US media.

Even Leave it to Beaver and the Brady Bunch wouldn’t meet your standards. I struggle to think of a 50s or 60s television program with a predominantly blond cast.

by Anonymousreply 27September 24, 2023 3:34 PM

Why are even bothering to rationalize with a (a few?!) Klan Grannies… their posts are the very definition of online stupidity.

by Anonymousreply 28September 24, 2023 3:38 PM

R22. I’ve spent hours of research and managed to find one!!! I don’t promise I will ever find another because THIS IS EXTREMELY RARE, but enjoy it while you can!!!! This may be the last ever of its kind!!!!!!

And where’s the blond? And you do understand that is a joke of a commercial? And are you OK?

by Anonymousreply 30September 24, 2023 3:49 PM

Stealth racist thread. Nice going OP

by Anonymousreply 31September 24, 2023 3:56 PM

Out of all the Eruopean countries I've visited England seem to have the most mixed race kids. Even more than Canada,

by Anonymousreply 32September 24, 2023 3:58 PM

OP you might want to consider the idea that for all its alleged “diversity”, you live in a country where interracial couples are still considered the exception. Scary, isn’t it?

by Anonymousreply 33September 24, 2023 4:03 PM

Did Canada move?

by Anonymousreply 34September 24, 2023 5:49 PM

[quote]OP went to Hallmark and purchased a race card.

"Excuse me, where is the miscegenation section?"

by Anonymousreply 35September 24, 2023 5:54 PM

OP, was this discussed at our last Klan meeting? Just curious.

by Anonymousreply 36September 24, 2023 5:57 PM

R27 Oh, probably not, I don’t really know. Just being a blond person myself I don’t see myself represented a lot. And maybe the family was a bad example but there certainly were blonds galore in earlier commercials (there are a few here, in the two tanning commercials for ex.) Granted these commericals only had white people in them. Which was also a problem. But I don’t think they need to erase people like me, now, just to make a point.

R27 ...and yes the first commercial features a “wholly blond” couple.

{quote]...seem to be disproportionately out of synch with reality

Right! Because tv shows are known to VERY in synch with reality.

What with their plots about working an average 9-5 job, going to the grocery, doing laundry, watching other tv shows, deciding to buy a new pair of shoes, feeding the dog. It's well known how tv shows are ONLY documentaries on average life.
