"Lost Souls" (2000), the Antichrist-themed horror film starring Winona Ryder and produced by Meg Ryan(?)

Co-starring Ben Chaplin, John Hurt, Philip Baker Hall, Elias Koteas, and Alfre Woodard. It follows a fanatical fringe Catholic (Ryder) who comes to believe that a writer (Chaplin) is the human personification of the devil. I frankly forgot this film existed, but it was just unearthed on Blu-ray by Scream Factory this week. I remember seeing it at an impressionable age and not understanding it fully, so I impulsively decided to buy it and see how the trip down memory lane would go.

I just got done watching it, and it was better than I anticipated. I frankly didn't remember much about it aside from the fact that it was visually gritty and quite dark. It was directed by Janusz Kamiński, most famous for his work as Spielberg's cinematographer on "Schindler's List" and "Saving Private Ryan", and the film is pallid and very gothic-looking. Ryder is quite good in it. It was released around the millennium among a glut of other doomsday/religious-themed horror films, so I think it got written off by many critics for that. Why Meg Ryan was involved as a producer is still a major WTF. Does anyone remember this movie?

The movie was made by Meg Ryan's short-lived production company Prufrock Pictures. Ryan was originally planning to star in it but then decided to do City of Angels instead and was replaced by Noni.

The studio hated this. Reshoots, delayed a really long time before it hit theaters. its at 8% on Rotten Tomatoes which is abysmal for a studio movie.

R2 That's still a good score compared with some of the other similarly-themed films that came out around the same time. Bless the Child has a 3% score on RT!

This was the first movie I saw with my now husband. I remember calling it Lost Twenty Dollars.

Two great looking actors, at least. Ben Chaplin and Winona.
