America has too much freedom

It is great to have certain freedoms, but a lot of times it seems they bite us in the ass. If you look at all the business freedoms, it’s been great for capitalism and minting all these new millionaires and billionaires over the last 200 years. Now, though the businesses have figured out how to siphon everything to the top, undercut each other and the little guy, and we’ve created these money monsters that are unstoppable. The constitution obviously wasn’t written, anticipating what the next hundreds of years would be like. The second amendment was written with the idea of a rifle to protect your home from danger, not thinking about machine guns. America sadly is starting to look like the next Roman empire.

I agree, OP. "Freedom", "patriotism" and "America" have become dangerously iconic in the US, for terms that can be used in so many sinister ways.

My understanding is that the second amendment was written to ensure that militia men would have their own arms if they needed to be called up quickly. The country was not free enough at that time from the possibility of attack by the British to allow militias to entirely stand down. If anyone wants to argue that that condition still applies, you are probably Meghan Markle.

America: the great experiment

Yes the peasants need to shut up and do what they're told. Our philosopher kings know what's best for them.

I love freedom of speech and lots of the others, maybe my problem is more with the people who take these things and twist them to the extremes. The grifters of society.

Yeah R3, such as "Covfefe". And some cheeseburders. You MAGA trolls love to jump on Biden and completely gloss over the fact that your Orange fucking GOD is a walking gaffe machine. That has not once gotten a coherent sentence out since 2016.

by Anonymousreply 6September 23, 2023 1:32 AM

Fuck off OP are you maga because you made nothing of your life or you did well & think you can take it with you when you die? Also- i know countries you can move to that will give you the desired less freedom.

At least there's Rep. Katie Porter.

As far as i can tell. OP is mostly talking about capitalism run amok - how does that make him MAGA? The first part is about too much corporate freedom (unfettered capitalism).

There are anti-trust laws that can be used (by the President) to break up monopolies, but they aren’t implemented. This has been happening since at least the ‘80s.

Also it’s been over a decade since the Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, that reversed century-old campaign finance restrictions and enabled corporations and other outside groups to spend unlimited funds on elections. his is another instance where corporations have too much freedom.

We can still fuck things up. The real horror will occur after we are gone. These things take time. Disruption and misdirection at all times.

[quote] look like the next Roman empire

There you go again, thinking about the Roman Empire. You must be straight.

The hard left always comes to this.

Americans and their freedumbs. Free to consume mostly bland food and bland dimestic entertainment. You can be either a socialist or Nazi. Don’t get paid six figures you can count the same wage for life basically? You have the choice of living 20 years in the future or 20 years in the past depending on your wallet and tolerance of banjos.

by Anonymousreply 13September 23, 2023 2:29 AM

Americans have a cheap notion of what freedom even is. Propaganda has convinced people that near feudalism is freedom as long as you're allowed do retail trading or something. I felt like COVID exposed this lowbrow American sense of our own principles like having to wear the mask at Arby's is 1776 to them but who cares if any of our institutions work or actually promote physical wellbeing and economic mobility.

by Anonymousreply 14September 23, 2023 2:43 AM

America has too many free DUMBS! I agree. Anyway stop thinking and get back to your entertainment distraction.
