JC's biggest mistake was trying to adopt a "bad boy/pussyhound" persona for his solo carrerr that never fitted on him. Back in 2003, the male solo market was already oversaturated with guys with that same attituted: 50 Cent, Usher, Eminem, Enrique Iglesias and of course Justin.

If I was his agent I would've advised him to instead adopt a more down-to-earth/boy next door/sensitive image (perhaps a la Bryan Adams) and he would've definitely had major success on charts as solo.

At the time, distancing himself from his pretty boy, boyband image was seemingly his best shot at continued stardom. The only former child stars who broke out all tried something similar during that era.

His ongoing mistake is that he continues to try to do so. He's a handsome guy and is aging much better than any of them, especially and including Justin who is looking his age. At his age, he should be playing up his good looks once again, not showing up ratty and unshaven.
