It’s also her very first single and breakout song, reaching #4 on the Hot 100. It was a BOP. I loved it. Debbie was my girl!! Loved her. Moreso than Tiffany.
“Only In My Dreams” (1987) is Debbie Gibson’s best song

I liked her too. Remember when she tried to move into Broadway later?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | September 21, 2023 4:03 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 21, 2023 4:14 PM |
Shake your love, Lost in your eyes. Electric Youth, Out of the Blue, Foolish Beat - she had lots of hits including #1s. But she sort of peaked after three albums.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | September 21, 2023 4:14 PM |
I always preferred her debut album to her sophomore one
by Anonymous | reply 6 | September 21, 2023 4:16 PM |
This is my favorite of hers as well, OP.

My top 9 Debbie songs:
1. No More Rhyme
2. Anything Is Possible (PWL Remix)

9. We Could Be Together

R5 that happens to most teen pop idols. Their shelf lives are usually short lived. Some are able to transition well with the industry’s always changing sounds and to a more mature sound with age but most fall off.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 21, 2023 4:18 PM |
OP, I went CRAZY for this song when it first came out. I bought the cassette and wore it out. I think I was in 8th grade. It is a perfect pop song. So, so catchy, and so nimbly captures middle-school puppy love angst.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 21, 2023 4:23 PM |
Her 1995 album “Think With Your Heart” was supposed to be her big comeback, with a more mature sound to cater to the once kids and teens who loved her when she was a teen, who were now older like herself. Sadly it crashed and burned a deadly death. Most people don’t even know that album exists, that’s how bad it did. Sadly too, as I thought it was good.
My mother was one of the handful of people who actually bought it and would play it all the time.
I loved “Didn’t Have The Time”.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 21, 2023 4:28 PM |
No to Deb. Just a big fat no. Not even for camp. Even back then she was teen crap for the vanilla crowd.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 21, 2023 5:00 PM |
I'll take Debbie Gibson over Cardi B any day. I miss when music was wholesome. Glorifying strippers, drug dealers and gang members is not what I thought we were all moving towards as an evolving culture.
Devo was right.

I miss the days of more wholesome pop too actually. American music is tripping over itself in its rush to amp up the vulgarity. I’m over it.
When it comes to Debbie’s stuff, i never liked her voice that much. I liked her personality, I liked a few of her songs, but overall she was very meh to me.

Deb wrote possibly the dumbest lyric in the history of popular music (and that's no mean feat): "I just fell, don't kno why" from Lost in Your Eyes. Uh, perhaps you should get an MRI, Deb.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 21, 2023 6:53 PM |
R18 The ‘fall’ is a metaphor, dear.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 21, 2023 7:16 PM |
Fell doesn't work as a metaphor if its not followed by a preposition. It just sounds like you have a neuromuscular condition.

I get down 'tween your thighs
And I feel your penis rise
And brush against my chin
Is it love that I am in?
I am down on my knees
May I suck your penis, please?
And I am a ho
'Cause it's this dick I can't let go
by Anonymous | reply 21 | September 22, 2023 8:51 AM |
R18 maybe the song has been about a woman the suffering from a neurogenerative disorder all along Gigi ever think about that? I mean the other lyrics talk about muscle weakness and confusion so clearly that's what she was getting at.

Debbie and Tiffany were both great. Both had some great songs, but between the two, Tiff had the voice. Girl could SANG. Her mature, throaty vocals made Deb's girlish warbling pale by comparison.

Taylor Swift is today's Debbie Gibson - completely saccharine and no soul.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 22, 2023 11:05 AM |
Taylor is too big a star to be compared to anyone from the 80s. Taylor’s career imitates Madonna in size of stardom if we are comparing her to an 80s pop icon.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 22, 2023 11:09 AM |
Or, of course, MJ. But I was speaking in terms of female pop stars.

[quote]Taylor is too big a star to be compared to anyone from the 80s.
I don't think that was a comparison of the size of her career. In terms of talent and presentation, Taylor is totally today's version of milquetoast Debbie.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 22, 2023 11:12 AM |
Fallen Angel and Out of the Blue were two other standouts from her first album. The former has exquisite backing vocals and harmonies.

Tiff was def the superior singer.

by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 22, 2023 12:05 PM |
R17 That’s why Taylor Swift is so popular, she’s really the only pop singer that’s wholesome.
She attempted being edgy with the “Reputation” album and it didn’t work so she ran right back to vanilla.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | September 22, 2023 12:11 PM |
In what world in TS still wholesome? Her Midnights album is all about sex, including lavender sex which means queer sex.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | September 22, 2023 12:14 PM |
Taylor Swift literally cast a trans man as her love interest and made a song with rapper Ice Spice. “Wholesome”.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | September 22, 2023 12:15 PM |
r38 Sh "literally" did, huh?
by Anonymous | reply 39 | September 22, 2023 12:18 PM |
Despite all of Taylor's attempts at being "edgy," she just doesn't have edge in her. She's completely vanilla, and it makes her attempts at edge come across as forced.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | September 22, 2023 12:39 PM |
[quote][R32] no one cares. Deb had the bigger hits and two big albums.
You do, obviously. Tiff's first album was a Billboard 200 #1 and 3 of the singles were Hot 100 top 10s with 2 of them going to #1. Deb's only #1 from her first album was Foolish Beat, and the album peaked at #7 on the Billboard 200.

You mean wholesome on Cruel Summer where she sings about being drunk in the back of a car? Or No Body No Crime where she kills a man she suspects of killing her friend's husband and framing the mistress? Or of course Blank Space where she plays up to the media role of a tragic man hungry crazy woman.
Taylor Swift isn't a natural dancer but she's a singer songwriter musician who is so far ahead of her peers it's unfair.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | September 22, 2023 1:47 PM |
R43 exactly. She was once wholesome but she hasn’t sang songs that were wholesome in years. Not being able to dance has nothing to do with wholesomeness.

by Anonymous | reply 53 | September 22, 2023 9:28 PM |
Tiffany had the better voice... on record. I have seen old vids of her singing live during her biggest years in the late 80s, though, and it was a different story. Really bad. But I agree, Debbie's voice wasn't remarkable, nor was her presentation. She was sort of similar to Kylie Minogue in the early years, but Kylie had a certain something more and, when she broke out of the confines of her original, teeny-bopper image, people accepted it, whereas Debbie sort of disappeared after trying the same.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | September 22, 2023 9:39 PM |
Kylie barely had a career in the states. Outside of a handful of songs.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | September 22, 2023 9:42 PM |
Debbie was all sweetness and light. She never had a song like Tiffany's "Spanish Eyes," which lyrically describes a young girl losing her virginity to her leather-wearing Latino boyfriend.

by Anonymous | reply 62 | October 2, 2023 9:16 PM |

Debbie is sort of overdue for a comeback. I mean, look at NKOTB, for fucks sake. Those talentless dorks had that huge tour recently. I think Debbie's challenge is she doesn't seem to let others write and produce her and, for me, she has an annoying vocal thing she does and needs to stop. It seems all her songs feature, in either the main vocal or the backing, this ear-piercing high note, where she'll sing a line in this grating high pitch and it sounds nasal and I just want to smack her til she's unconscious. But, other than that, her music can be delightful.
