Roger Whittaker is dead to me.

"The Last Farewell" was always on the car radio when I was a kid.

I think every little girl in the 1970s was lulled to sleep by Daddy with this tune. It's a playlist staple for me to this day. I can't imagine today's charts inviting such a character with such a song.

by Anonymousreply 1September 18, 2023 9:17 PM

My mom and her friends would be so upset...but they're all dead.

by Anonymousreply 2September 18, 2023 9:41 PM

He was HUGE in Canada

Roger would be so upset.

But he's dead.

by Anonymousreply 4September 18, 2023 9:44 PM

I thought he died years ago.

by Anonymousreply 5September 18, 2023 9:44 PM

I've always liked Durham Town.

by Anonymousreply 6September 18, 2023 9:46 PM

Any relation to Forrest?

by Anonymousreply 7September 18, 2023 9:51 PM

Never heard of him but sounds like some people will miss him.

by Anonymousreply 8September 18, 2023 9:52 PM

Was he ever top 40 in the US?

by Anonymousreply 9September 18, 2023 10:15 PM

r9 I just used google for that same question

by Anonymousreply 10September 18, 2023 10:21 PM

I know the name from those long commercials for his greatest hits collection that used to air at night on the New York cable channels.

by Anonymousreply 11September 18, 2023 10:34 PM

He had a *sound*.

by Anonymousreply 12September 18, 2023 10:37 PM

He's no Slim Whitman.

by Anonymousreply 13September 18, 2023 10:37 PM

OMG, R3, that takes me back to having to listen to that song in music class.

by Anonymousreply 15September 18, 2023 10:43 PM

Makes me sad. My dad LOVED RW and I grew to too...he passed away when I was 2 weeks short of 13, and anytime I hear him, melancholy hits me like a truck. Maybe he can get his own concert now. RIP Roger, thanks for the beautiful music.

by Anonymousreply 16September 18, 2023 10:54 PM

I really feel we should check in on Nana Mouskouri.

by Anonymousreply 17September 18, 2023 10:55 PM

This one I think was his most well known.

[quote]I thought he died years ago.

He did. But they’re just getting around to announcing it now.

by Anonymousreply 19September 18, 2023 11:00 PM

I swear he was old in the 1970’s. But I guess he was only in his late 30’s-40’s.

by Anonymousreply 20September 18, 2023 11:05 PM

I'd come home from school to him and John Denver playing on my parent's old record player. My mom would listen to them while doing housework with no kids around.

by Anonymousreply 21September 18, 2023 11:18 PM

Aww, he was wonderful RIP. He was my DL deadpool choice for several years. Looks like I was eventually right. Love his song "New World In The Morning".

by Anonymousreply 22September 19, 2023 1:26 AM

I'm 56 and I had never heard "The Last Farewell" until I just looked it up on Youtube. Soothing music, not very catchy, though.

by Anonymousreply 23September 19, 2023 2:00 AM

He was old 40 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 24September 19, 2023 2:04 AM

Too bad, RIP

by Anonymousreply 25September 19, 2023 2:05 AM

He's jamming with Gordon Lightfoot now.

by Anonymousreply 26September 19, 2023 2:12 AM

Between slim whitman and the dude with the magic greek flute Roger was a steady advertiser on local tv.

Gordon Lightfoot

Jimmy Buffett

Roger Whitaker

I said before, it's been a rough year for the modern troubadours. Somebody find Paul Simon and wrap him in bubble wrap.

[quote] I thought he died years ago.

Same here, as others said when I was a kid I thought he could be my grandfather. And I’m 53.

[quote] I really feel we should check in on Nana Mouskouri.

Hah! My dad, who played the guitar, had Nana’s albums as well as RW’s and Gordon Lightfoot’s and the song sheets for their music.

by Anonymousreply 31September 19, 2023 11:50 AM

Yes, I, too. thought he died just a few years ago. Some great songs!

by Anonymousreply 32September 19, 2023 12:07 PM

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Whittaker had success in Germany, with German language songs produced by Nick Munro. Unable to speak German, Whittaker sang the songs phonetically. He appeared on German television and was on the UK Top of the Pops show several times in the 1970s.[citation needed] Whittaker's German-language songs were not initially well received by some critics, who derided the songs as "meaningless folk music". Notwithstanding, Whittaker released 25 albums in Germany and managed to grow a considerable fan base within the country, where he felt he had his most loyal fans, saying "The past few decades have been wonderful … My relationship with the German fans is great."[9]

by Anonymousreply 33September 19, 2023 12:23 PM

He was only 87. I felt sure he had to be in his late 90s at least. He was around the same age as my mum and dad yet seemed much older than them.

by Anonymousreply 34September 19, 2023 12:24 PM

The Last Farewell always reminds me of hearing it over the stereo while in the back seat of a neighbor’s dad’s 1972 Olds Vista Cruiser station wagon. Very lush sound. Also, WGN in Chicago used the instrumental part as the music in its station ID of the Channel 9 logo in metallic gold superimposed over a blue sky with fluffy clouds. RIP old Roger.

His Christmas album was the holiday soundtrack to my childhood. A Time For Prace, Darcy the Dragon, Mighty Like a Rose…

by Anonymousreply 36September 19, 2023 6:40 PM

I used to work on a cruise ship and when one of the British crew was signing off, one of the bands would play this in the lounge the night before.

by Anonymousreply 37September 19, 2023 7:15 PM

He had a hot set of Dahmer glasses, but he couldn't live forever.

by Anonymousreply 38September 19, 2023 8:07 PM

this thread got me listening to this guy.......

by Anonymousreply 39September 22, 2023 4:20 PM

He must have been 120 years old.

by Anonymousreply 40September 22, 2023 9:09 PM

Another person I could have sworn was dead is Michael Caine but yesterday I saw an article about him out and about with a cane.
