“Don’t Stop Believin” or “Faithfully” or “Open Arms” etc. don’t come close to this energetic masterpiece. It’s pure energy and masculinity.
“Separate Ways” (1983) is Journey’s best song!!!

Oh, God NO!!! Class of '82 N. California teen who LOATHED these untalented fuckers and their beaky queen lead singer, Steve somethingortheother. What happened to him?

That was a good song, OP. Very '80s-sounding. "Eye of the Tiger" energy.
My all-time favorite Journey song is "Lights." I've listened to it countless times.
My guilty pleasure is Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'.
I also like Wheel in the Sky.

His name was Steve Perry R1. And they were at the top of the charts back then. Loved them, I still here the songs on Serious radio sometimes. They were huge at the time. Unlike the other metal crap that was popular, Journey actually has good musical melody which made it so popular.
Steven got in a fight with the band and they parted ways. The band tried to higher another male singer who sounded just like him but it still was not Steve Perry. It was the end of the band. Oh they still play gigs today, but they never had another hit.

Was Journey ever considered metal? Nope.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 18, 2023 5:10 AM |
They don’t need other hits. They had many that live on today and never go away, especially Don’t Stop Believin.

Wheel in the Sky was as famous as We Will Rock you by Queen at the time. Maybe even more so.

No one said that. I said COMPARED to.

That remake sucks r8. They got the moves wrong, wings look stupid, and they act like the mimicked it so perfectly they wanted to post side by side.
TIP: unless you really practiced what you are doing, don't post it next to the original.

R2
Stone in Love - an underrated gem.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 18, 2023 5:50 AM |
The imperfection of the remake is the entire point, R9. It’s supposed to be funny, not a contestant on The Voice.

Northern California done right by punk and precedents.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 18, 2023 6:00 AM |
But it's not funny R9, just stupid. Like someone made it for his mom so she can say it's the funniest thing she has ever seen.

I loved it when Tom Servo was jamming to the closing credits to ‘Escape from the Bronx’ and suddenly burst into “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” on the old ‘Mystery Science Theater 3000’ program. My co-favorite Journey record is “Anyway You Want It”. It was also used to great effect over the closing credits of a “The Simpsons” episode.

Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin, is better.

I haven’t thought about these songs in years (other than the Don’t Stop Believing revival thanks to the Sopranos). Takes me back to my Indiana high school circa 1982. They were HUGE then and a band that both the boys and the girls were into.
I bought my first set of albums (on cassette) through Columbia Record Club and Journey Escape was one of the eight for a penny along with Foreigner, Ozzy Osborne, REO Speedwagon and the like. I soon discovered alternative rock was my thing, got pretentious and ditched the lot of them.

I had a high school friend back then that would barrow one record at a time and just play it non stop 24/7 for 3 or 4 days until he was totally over ever hearing it again. Then he would return the album and say thanks, now I dont have to buy it. That was his way of saving money. Cant even imaging what he like today.

R13 I’m sorry that your monocle fell into your Earl Grey. I hope that this lack of refinement in a [checks notes] “Journey thread” didn’t cause injury to your extended pinky finger.

Journey is great fun and I love when one of their hits comes up on my playlist.
I think Steve was a pissy douche and ruined it for everyone though.

There is nothing especially "masculine" about Steve Perry's vocal, and that's what makes him great. He has SOUL and it comes through in his music. I gravitate toward his softer stuff "Foolish Heart", "Who's Crying Now", "Send Her My Love" and "I'll Be Alright Without You."

1982-1983, Sugar Land, TX: all of the above plus Cheap Trick.

R18 lives in a bubble of make believe. Sopranos never revived that song. Glee did though

I love you, R20

I thought Don't Stop Believin' was revived by the movie Monster.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 18, 2023 3:59 PM |
R27. Yes. I know it was in the final scene. But that didn’t revive the song. Glee did in 2009.

Pipe down, R28. The adults are talking.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 18, 2023 5:18 PM |
R28 it siring on Sopranos not only revived the song but the band. Dumbass.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 18, 2023 5:22 PM |
R30 only that’s not true.
R29 mimicking what people constantly say to you only shows you’re a RETARD.

R31 except it is. Dumbass.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 18, 2023 5:24 PM |
R32 do you know what revived means? The song was used but it didn’t give it a second life.

Lol you're an idiot.

Jesus Christ on a Cracker, man. You're talking about the most marginal talent who went nowhere after Journey as if Perry is some sort of a John Fogerty, Jr.! Perry only whines, pitches, and brass without nuance.
Just stop before you disgrace yourself further. You must be a troll, right?
