Howard Stern - VICE report

I didn't know he was such a cruel asshole. I only know him from being a host on AMGT. Sorry if the link doesn't work but I suppose most DLers know him much better than I do. He's a perfect example of spending the first half of your life as a douche and then seeking forgiveness -- not from everyone you've damaged, just those who can put you back in the spotlight.

Howard Stern was one of the first celebrities who supported Gay Marriage before it became legal anywhere. Fuck Vice.

by Anonymousreply 1September 18, 2023 3:48 AM

Every time I see him I hear him saying, “I’m hung like a pimple”.

by Anonymousreply 2September 18, 2023 3:58 AM

r1 so that's all you care about

by Anonymousreply 3September 18, 2023 4:02 AM

OP doesnt understand satire. He also doesnt understand that the Vice doc was a slanted piece of shit. He didnt 'damage' anyone, especially that no-talent Manturd. He actually gave voice to working class folks and the invisible who are ignored by the media.

by Anonymousreply 4September 18, 2023 4:32 AM

OP has it spot on.

Stern was always a wimpy unattractive douche. He made a movie about his life like 25 years ago, which basically was him plying himself. Mostly about his fight with some other douche in the industry and how he was a "loyal friend" to Robin, the only one that would put up with him at that time outside of his wife. Which he divorced as soon as the millions rolled in. Then years of expensive hookers.

If you cant tell from the hair and sunglasses, he thinks of himself as a rock star.

by Anonymousreply 5September 18, 2023 5:25 AM

[quote]Howard Stern was one of the first celebrities who supported Gay Marriage before it became legal anywhere

I would not consider him a gay ally. Gays were just another controversial topic at the time he could jabber about on his show for 2 hours. My ex used to listen to him. I remember one show where he was interviewing some gay man and all he wanted to talk about was the sex and literally asked the guy if he likes the smell of another man's ass. All while he played stupid fart sounds in the background.

by Anonymousreply 6September 18, 2023 5:35 AM

Vice is shit. Giving more money to Murdoch.

by Anonymousreply 7September 18, 2023 6:15 AM

R6 BULLSHIT. He's an absolute ally and has been for YEARS. Straight men ask dumb questions about being gay.

by Anonymousreply 8September 18, 2023 10:30 AM

It's not the dumb questions he was asking, it was making fun of the guy with stupid sound effects that matters. if it were a woman talking about rape and he started playing sound clips of women screaming or moaning in the background would you say he's a woman's ally or more of a misogynist.

by Anonymousreply 9September 18, 2023 10:36 AM

He was one of the earliest shock jocks.

by Anonymousreply 10September 18, 2023 11:10 AM

Yes, r10. I’m so old I remember him from DC 101 in Washington before he went to NY and made it big.

by Anonymousreply 11September 18, 2023 11:21 AM

Didn't he always have Richard Simmons and George Takei on so he could mock them? Yeah, fuck him and his being an "ally."

by Anonymousreply 12September 18, 2023 11:44 AM

r12 is an idiot. He never mocked George, he celebrated him, and he only mocked Richard because he was so obviously gay but refused to admit it. He had Simmons over to his house. Richard named Howards 3rd daughter, Ashley.

by Anonymousreply 13September 18, 2023 1:13 PM

I recently saw an old Stern interview with a young Pamela Anderson, it made my skin crawl. He was saying it was so hot that she had sex before she even got her period (she was raped) and he kept saying "That's so sexy, that's so feminine". She was super uncomfortable. He was a nasty mess.

by Anonymousreply 14September 18, 2023 1:19 PM

I PRAY this is the beginning of the humiliating downfall and justice for this vile weasel of a man. How he's evaded it so long, I have no idea. But I do pray this is the first crack in what will be his complete collapse.

by Anonymousreply 15September 18, 2023 1:21 PM

lol at r15. He has a new 5 year $500 million dollar contract with Sirius and he is cancel-proof. Ironically, its his longtime fans which hate him the most because of AGT and his so-called evolution. He is almost 70 and has hundreds of millions of dollars. He doesnt GAF.

[quote]Howard Stern was one of the first celebrities who supported Gay Marriage before it became legal anywhere. Fuck Vice.

R1, are you FUCKING kidding me? Do you actually think nobody over the age of 20 participates on this board? You're a fucking liar so fuck you too.

by Anonymousreply 17September 18, 2023 1:31 PM

By R1's claim of Howard Sterm "supporting gay marriage", R1 actually meant to say, "Howard Stern was one of the first celebrities to support paying two men to come into a studio, dress them up as brides, mock, giggle, snicker and degrade them for being "homos", which the guys allowed because he was paying them, and "pronounce" them as "gay married"......."

THAT'S what R1 means about Stern "supporting" gay marriage. When the whole woke and sexist/bigoted/racist/homophobic push-back began and celebrities started getting cancelled for their vile shit, Stern literally had an epiphany overnight, coming into the studio one day and being the ultra "progressive enlightened" Jew that he plays himself as today. R1 is one of Stern's trashy fans. F&F

by Anonymousreply 18September 18, 2023 1:35 PM

[Quote]he only mocked Richard because he was so obviously gay but refused to admit it.

Right. So it's a POS straight guy's prerogative to force someone to out themselves because he decides they're gay? Maybe Simmons is more asexual than gay. Either way, it's not Stern's decision.

Howard Stern is a sleazy POS who contributed to the coarseness of modern society. Again, fuck him.

He's an extremely bad person, I mean it's completely obvious from how he has treated his staff over the years - he's barely ever shown Gary any respect and whenever they tell an anecdote about them doing something together personally it's always about how Howard is so shockingly rude and cold to him and to everybody. I can't remember the details, but isn't it true that he told his own daughters not to even look at him or something like that? He can't fucking stand anything that isn't talking at everybody - he's an unbelievably talented broadcaster, but at the expense of everything else a human being could be. I still like the show in spite of this.

I used to think - oh well, his staffers are such incompetent lunatics so of course Howard is going to be hard on them. But then I realized he hires people like that on purpose - nobody who was highly competent and functional would tolerate the way he treats people, Howard looks for a crew of dysfunctional misfits because they're easy to dominate.

by Anonymousreply 23September 18, 2023 2:05 PM

He would be vicious if you came after him. He had an army of crank callers and wack packers who would go after them. He used to have a Rosie O'Donnel head full of jellybeans and would have people guess the jellybeans.

by Anonymousreply 24September 18, 2023 2:20 PM

Haven’t people known he was an asshole since the 90s?

by Anonymousreply 25September 18, 2023 2:21 PM

I spent about 5 minutes listening to him once, and then made a point for the next 30 years to avoid his very existence entirely, so I know nothing about him, his douchiness, or anything else about his career.

Ignorance, in this case, has truly been bliss.

by Anonymousreply 26September 18, 2023 2:24 PM

What -- you didn't enjoy the repeated episodes of drug addicted strippers riding a bull/sex machine while Howie threw slabs of baloney at them? Most slabs sticking to skin WINS!! Charming fellow.

by Anonymousreply 31September 18, 2023 10:07 PM

Have any of you actually listened to Howard Stern in the past 15 years? He is probably the single best interviewer out there. His “gets” are legendary. The Jerry Seinfeld interview alone would be the best but over and over the 9/11 broadcast has to be at the top.

[Quote]I'm pretty sure she dumped him because he used material she considered private on his show.

by Anonymousreply 35September 18, 2023 11:54 PM

Say what you will about him but he made an impact on a whole generation of males 18-35 . He made it 'ok' for them to more lgbt friendly than they normally would have been.

by Anonymousreply 36September 18, 2023 11:58 PM

For those who feel he was an ally to gays, you should go back and listen to him go after Osie O'Donnell for no good reason. Back when she had a talk show, he would talk about "her big fat head", that she was ugly and undesirable, not funny, should put a bag over her head, her show was vapid, etc. He even had people call in to her morning show - his puppet Captain Janks got through live and said "Howard Stern thinks you're a big fat pig". Okay, Howard didn't make that creep do it directly, but he influenced his army of creeps and he replayed the recording of it a bunch. Years later he met Rosie at some NY function and they talked and he apologized. Howard did that a lot after he moved into NYC after his divorce - no more "shock jock". He started rubbing elbows with celebrities socially and turned into a different guy, coming face to face with a lot of the people he used to bad mouth. He was too much of a puss to roast them to their faces.

Howard was extremely mean to rival radio jocks back before he got on satellite - this was when ratings would make or break a station. He would declare war on certain DJ's in competing markets and rile up his minions. They would prank call these other stations, confront staff, picket, chase these rivals through airports, streets, etc. Years later, when Howard got out of broadcast radio and mellowed, he said he had a God complex back then, that his high ratings went to his head and anyone who looked like they could beat him had to be taken down. That shrink he's been seeing for 20+ years needs to do better.

by Anonymousreply 37September 19, 2023 12:18 AM

Yeah r37 and they made peace he apologized and she has been on his show multiple times. People grow and evolve. As a matter of fact they seem like good friends.

[quote]I never cared for Howard Stern but he did evolve as he got older and for about the last 20 years has shown redemption for his shock jock years

R34 He has only shown 'redemption' to the celebs he's trashed, not his old staffers. Howard knows what it takes to stay relevant. He has never tried to make amends to all the 'little people' he abused on his show. How many people live in shame for what he did to them on his show, hoping no one today is aware of their underage misadventures. Not to excuse them, particularly the young girls, but Howard exploited them and should apologize for that behavior just as much as apologizing to the celebs.

He also admitted to getting a nose job; he said so during the first few shows on Sirius.

by Anonymousreply 65September 24, 2023 2:55 PM

He was a shock jock. Was a dick for the straight boys. Then he evolved. I had heard of him but had never listened until another thread on DL. Since that post i listen to scads of interviews. He was a pig in the early days yet the recent stuff was well done.

by Anonymousreply 66September 24, 2023 3:04 PM

I used to do temp jobs in the 90s and aughts and his show was the only thing that got me through the first 3 hours of work. That said, I really only enjoyed the interviews and Robin reading the news highlights. I usually laughed at him rather than with him. Just a very damaged straight man flailing around and trying to figure the world out.

by Anonymousreply 67September 24, 2023 3:23 PM

He has always been honest about most of his shortcomings, including oversharing about his first wife. But he was famously faithful, despite having strippers and porn stars throwing themselves at him. He had a short wild phase after the divorce but married second wife quicly afterward, and there's no gossip about them. Despite his seemingly misogynistic antics on his old radio show, all 3 of his daughters seem normal and are well-educated. He has always leaned left politically and has been open about his mental health struggles.

by Anonymousreply 68September 24, 2023 3:34 PM

Oh, he's so horrible. Give me a break. People are allowed to evolve. Anyone here who is exactly the same as they were 10, 20, 30 years ago are the ones with the problem.

Robin Quivers defends Stern over his mocking Mexicans

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 75September 24, 2023 5:37 PM

The only time I ever listened to him was when there was a TV version of his radio show on where I lived. I went to college with a lot of kids from Long Island, most nice, but a few exactly like Stern. I never really encountered that type before. Outspokenly rude, no filter, and thinking that was funny. To me it’s never been funny. I don’t think he’s particularly bright, either.

by Anonymousreply 76September 24, 2023 5:45 PM

I used to listen to Howard Stern all the time when I was just out of college up to 9/11. Only reason I stopped listening to him was because he moved to satellite radio and at the time the subscriptions were expensive and you had to have a special receiver. I do remember at the end of that period, just right after 9/11 he was openly hard on president George Bush, which I enjoyed. I don't find him an asshole at all. I think he does what he does very well. And people talking about his staff and how he treats them - as if they have no agency of their own. Someone wouldn't stick around for 30 years if they were completely disgusted with their treatment, as Gary has.

by Anonymousreply 77September 24, 2023 5:55 PM

One of his daughters graduated with me from NYU from the Tisch School of Arts. I remember him showing up like any other parent and sitting her walk across the stage. He seemed like a very doting father. That would have been 2005.

by Anonymousreply 78September 24, 2023 5:58 PM

He's milking the Ronnie wedding for everything its got.

by Anonymousreply 79September 24, 2023 7:02 PM

He was very popular among the dudebros at my first office job in the late 80s-early 90s. Quite racist and sexist, although that was always defended as part of his act. Personally I didn’t appreciate that kind of thing so I was not a fan.

Having said that, I think he has matured. He’s not stupid at all and I believe he is sincere about his current beliefs. There are some people who are almost pathologically devoted to Howard (elders now) and sort of right leaning…I honestly think if anyone can get through to them it might be Howard.

by Anonymousreply 80September 24, 2023 7:11 PM

The best way he could make up for being a douche is going away. Howard is a big attention whore and since being a dick isn't pulling in an audience anymore, he's going with the flow and being all woke now.

by Anonymousreply 85September 25, 2023 6:37 AM

[quote]he's going with the flow and being all woke now.

And what exactly does that mean in negative terms? White conservatives have once again co-opted a word that has been used amongst the black community for decades and turned it into a pejorative. Being “woke” is not a bad thing, it simply means being aware and attuned to certain societal injustices.

by Anonymousreply 86September 25, 2023 6:39 AM

Too late R86. Woke has been so basterized by the right in spite of it's original good intention, I think it's time to admit that you lost that battle and move on. It's as ingrained now into American psyche as "Hillary's emails".

by Anonymousreply 87September 25, 2023 6:50 AM

by Anonymousreply 90September 25, 2023 9:18 AM

Regarding the clip at R75, Robin was condescending in asserting that Linda simply doesn't understand the show. The show didn't go that deep, and most people get that Howard plays to the lowest common denominator, but that doesn't mean that he's playing a character or that it's okay because one can simply change the dial. Of course his words were offensive to many people. But the audience mob shouted Ronstadt down so... Robin won!

by Anonymousreply 91September 25, 2023 12:09 PM

R89= Al Sharpton

by Anonymousreply 92September 25, 2023 12:12 PM

[quote]People who know better know that the word is not negative.

The people who know better a few and far between. Can you name any Democratic politicians who describe themselves as WOKE in public, on TV and on their websites? That word is poison now. Even people who know better know that. You lost that one, find another word.

by Anonymousreply 93September 25, 2023 12:16 PM

Better yet R93, can you find one ReTARDlican politician who can explain what it means under his or her own bastardized definition? As much as it pains you, we will NOT find another word, because it perfectly describes what people like you hate. You and the other MAGAt deplorables may have co-opted it, but it was not then and is not now your word, and you will be crying in your corn flakes come 2024.

by Anonymousreply 94September 25, 2023 1:00 PM

Most of his humor was satire. It was raunchy and not PC, but if you got it you got it. Like having on Daniel Carver to expose the KKK and white supremacy. He had on Lesbian dial a date long before it was IN to have gay people on.

by Anonymousreply 95September 25, 2023 1:58 PM

"Satire", forsooth! Stern is not that Swift.

The only reason he had lesbian dial a date was to make fun of them.

by Anonymousreply 96September 25, 2023 2:21 PM

Turned today's show on earlier, heard Ronnie so I turned it back off.

by Anonymousreply 97September 25, 2023 2:41 PM

How can SIRIUS afford to keep renewing his multimillion dollar contract(s)?

by Anonymousreply 98September 25, 2023 4:01 PM

He had lesbian dial-a-date because lesbians equal ratings.

by Anonymousreply 99September 25, 2023 4:09 PM

Some of Stern's stuff was clearly satire and some of it was the prevailing attitudes of the time. People found humor in the inappropriate. Not saying that it was right back then, but it happened. It happens now, people just don't do it out in the open any longer - because we're supposed to know better now.

by Anonymousreply 100September 25, 2023 4:51 PM

I’m an Australian. The first time I heard of Howard Stern was when he made the news for picketing Rosie O’Donnell because she made Tom Selleck cry on her show or something.

by Anonymousreply 101September 25, 2023 5:00 PM

He's talking now about watching trans porn.

And of course Ronnie pops up...

by Anonymousreply 102September 26, 2023 11:36 AM

R94 I am not MAGA, I wont even maintain friendships who are. What a bizarre assumption. Anyways, I dont give 2 fucks if you keep the word or not. I was only pointing out you lost that battle for how it's being interpreted. I see you couldn't answer my question. I will ask again, can you point to any Democrat currently in office that think WOKE is going to help them get re-elected? Maybe one or two, everyone else is running away from that work like someone took a dump in the pool. But if you want to keep the word, knock yourself out. I could care less.

by Anonymousreply 103September 26, 2023 12:31 PM

R103, how about you give me any ReTHUGlican who can articulate what it means in their own terms. Guess what? You can't, because THEY can't. The onus is on them, not for the people who know it for its intended positive purpose.

[quote] he made the news for picketing Rosie O’Donnell because she made Tom Selleck cry on her show or something.

Not quite. Seleck came on her show to plug some new project and Rosie rudely ambushed him trying to pressure Tom into condemning guns. Selleck handled her with dignity and Rosie looked like a jerk.

What Stern had to do with this I don't know.
