Rotting in the Sun

I just watched this film, and I'm not sure exactly if what I saw has any meaning or merit. Yes, there was some funny and satirical stuff, but I'm not sure that's worth watching the movie, which seemed much longer than its 1-hour 49-minute running time. And yes, there are some unsimulated sex scenes, but not enough to justify watching this instead of porn.

I'm interested to hear what other DLers think...

I've seen it. I watched the entire film, but determined early on that this was something I would watch in about four different parts. I found natural breaks at around the 30 minute mark, the 52 minute mark and the 1:28 mark.

I was surprised when the film veered from being a story about the artist-writer - who seemed to be lead in the first half-hour - and became more about the social media personality and the mentally-challenged housekeeper. When that happened, I knew I'd made the right decision about not watching the whole thing in one sitting, so it became more of a web series for me.

I didn't hate it, but it's one of those things where you keep thinking what's happening, wouldn't need to be happening, if someone had just told the simple truth to begin with. So the cover-up scenario gets a little old after awhile.

Also, I didn't think the nudity or the sex added much at all. The scenes where it occurred could easily have been shot differently. And I didn't see anything hot enough in what we did see to care about them. Some of the guys were downright ugly. I also didn't get the reason behind having the dog always wanting to eat poop. There were some other unfunny parts as well.

The overall audience rating at IMDb is currently 7.0. I'd probably rate it more like 5.6.

I watched a scene or two but haven't really watched it yet. I like Sebastián Silva's movies, in particular La Nana, and they aren't much like American productions of the 2000's. Silva is a true artist in many media and very talented.

How did you watch it?

by Anonymousreply 3September 26, 2023 12:36 AM

It was a bit tiresome. Most of the characters were unlikeable, and the one who was interesting and complex “left” a third of the way through. There was no one else for me to to really care about. The remaining characters were annoying, dumb, or both. If I don’t care about the characters, I can’t connect with them. The nudity and brief sex didn’t make up for that. There’s also an inexcusable and unnecessary depiction of animal abuse that should have been removed.

Is this film something Eldergays will relate to?

by Anonymousreply 5September 26, 2023 12:41 AM

It seems sloppier or "throw away" than his other films. I think it's an experiment or at least purposely slap dash, improvised.

EXACTLY! It would have been a much more interesting film if the housekeeper had called the police/ambulance immediately and then had the plot continue with how the TV show series would be accomplished. Having the brother arrive would have helped in that plot change.

Jordan Firstman is disgusting in every way imaginable.

R4 “ There’s also an inexcusable and unnecessary depiction of animal abuse that should have been removed.”

Ugh, no. Hard pass. I can’t stand content that includes the mistreatment of defenseless animals, even simulated. I think there was a sort of sequel or spinoff from the film Welcome to the Dollhouse titled Weiner Dog. I really wanted to see it, but one review commented that the dog is somehow heartlessly killed near the end of the film. I just can’t seem to view it. I know I’m being soft and stupid and that it’s a generally admire film (and cast and director). The same holds true for another older film about a donkey, Balthazar.

It's interesting that Firstman allows himself to be filmed nude (grower, not shower) and sucks an actual dick in the film while Sebastián Silva does not do a nude scene or sex scene.

If you’re only wanting to see the nude scenes here they are. Firstman’s a brave actor to be filmed hard and sucking cock in the movie. He’s done a lot of mainstream projects and has a fairly long IMDB resume.

His acting resume is 90% web series or shorts.

I'm only interested in seeing Sebastián Silva naked, he's cute as hell. I agree with r9, I find Firstman lowkey revolting.

by Anonymousreply 14September 26, 2023 7:16 PM

I don't get the disgust, they look like twins.

by Anonymousreply 15September 26, 2023 7:33 PM

There was no need for Sebastián Silva to simulate the dog abuse at the beginning or the ending of the movie, and the scene of the dog licking shit off of a giant dildo while Firstman and his friends had sex was just unnecessary.

by Anonymousreply 16August 31, 2024 3:29 AM

Well, men are dogs and dogs love man.

by Anonymousreply 17August 31, 2024 3:47 AM

There was no love between Silva and that dog, or any of those men.

by Anonymousreply 18August 31, 2024 3:55 AM

I will never watch anything where an animal is beaten

by Anonymousreply 19August 31, 2024 4:24 AM

Was anyone else hoping the abused maid would somehow accidentally make drinks with the drug and inadvertently take out the entire rest of the cast?

by Anonymousreply 20August 31, 2024 6:02 AM

Between the shit-covered dildo and the dog abuse, you guys are really selling this movie (which I've noticed on MUBI but have avoided clicking on so far)

by Anonymousreply 21August 31, 2024 6:46 AM

Smart choice R21.

by Anonymousreply 22September 6, 2024 7:37 AM

Are all this guy's movies just artsy porn films?
