Can doctors prescribe medications for themselves?

My dad used to, but this was in the 60s /70s in California. Things were pretty laid back then.

I worked at a doctor's office in 2011. Doctor had a lot of money, smart, and handsome with a great body. Great boss. He started prescribing himself medication. I think it was steroids. He got involved with some shady drug dealer type guys.

Things got crazy. Doctor was arrested for first degree murder. No bail. Ugly trial. Everyone lost their jobs. Unemployment office and insurance were both terrible and difficult. I went to visit him a few years ago and he looked like a skinny soulless meth addict.

He's still in a maximum security state prison.
