The Alaska Thread

Let’s discuss the Last Frontier. Have you lived there? Born & raised there? Visited? What’s good, what’s bad?

I can see Russia from my house!

Hard to imagine a more useless one.

My uncle moved there during the 50s and it wasn't long after that his wife divorced him and moved to California.

I opened up my bussy there

I (barely) visited there last summer on a cruise (Carnival!) last summer. It's absolutely gorgeous and wild.

I definitely want to go again on a non-cruise vacation. I (understandably) feel a little robbed because one of the only shore excursions we booked (bi-plane tour of two glaciers) was canceled because of poor visibility. But what I could see of Alaska and its wilderness really captivated me. I'm a nature lover and to have the opportunity to see and explore land that is still wild and underpopulated is very appealing to me.

I cried when two whales breached extremely close to our ship while we were at sea. Yeah, i'm *that* person. Seeing a ton of bald eagles just sitting around nonchalantly on dock piers was pretty thrilling. We even saw some friggin' flying fish and many schools of dolphins.

I live in Northern California, and even though I live where it's not unusual to see deer, fox, wild turkey, rattlesnakes, wild cats of all sorts, coyotes, etc., I could easily live in a much more remote area with more wildlife and be very happy. No, I'd never live there, but another visit (or a few) is definitely warranted, in my opinion.

I have thought about retiring in Anchorage. I've always wanted to live somewhere where it is cold most of the year. The state pays people to live there. Not a ton, but still...

When she's baked, she's good.

I’ve been there—twice. It feels like you’re on a different planet. It’s so vast and wild and breathtakingly beautiful. It’s also outrageously expensive.

Love Sitka. Yes, it's mildly tourist-y but beautiful. Weather is perfect for me, not too warm, not too cold...just right!

Isn't that where Trump's grandpa ran a whorehouse?

Winter wonderland.
