The reason why there was such a huge outpouring of assistance is that Dickey himself has aided in many rescues, most notably the Tham Luang cave rescue of the boys soccer team in Thailand.
He has been an instructor with the US National Cave Rescue Commission for 10 years, teaching a variety of cave rescue classes. He is also listed as the body's International Exchange Program Co-ordinator on its website.

OK I accept the caveat. The Thai cave doesn't dive. But it's long! It was wildly risky and stupid to take school boys 2.5 miles into it.
I don't mind light caving. I was commenting on the extreme risk tasking.
