It’s too long and the curls look off. Love the softer color though. She’s upped her Botox and filler injections and it’s beautifully done…she’s aging backwards.

Of course she's wearing hair extensions, though obviously very good ones since she's loaded.

I'm the last holdout for Kate with long hair.
But, now: too many layers, too long, too many "beachy waves," too many extensions. She's starting to look like a 2007 Real Housewife. It's just looking too fussy, now, and is dragging down her face.
She should do some subtle highlights, an overall shorter length. No, not above the shoulder. She can still have long hair.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 14, 2023 7:39 AM |
She's very beautiful to begin with, different hairstyles only seem to make her beautiful in different ways.

Agree with r13, especially on the overall shorter length.
Her face looks fuller. Maybe it's filler. But I think she looks like she's gained 3 to 5 lbs, which looks good on her.
Or, she's pregnant, again.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 14, 2023 12:40 PM |
The funniest posts on DL lately have been all the royalist loonies on the Next Jackie Kennedy thread claiming this haggard social climber is the new Jackie. R14 is a close second, though. "She's so beautiful when she's beautiful! She's even more beautiful when she beautifuls differently!" Okay, hon!
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 14, 2023 12:47 PM |
I'm with R13. I deplore the fashion for really long hair on older women. It is clearly part of the same delusion as "fillers and Botox make you look younger". Nope. Long, long hair makes you look like a female academic who hasn't made time in 15 years to cut her hair, and fillers and Botox make you look weird.
Hair curling round and over your shoulders should be the limit at 40+. Gravity is pulling your face down: you don't need your hair to do it too. Jennifer Aniston please also note.

Except Kate doesn't look intelligent enough for that.
I'm really against the "all 40+ women must run out and get a June Cleaver hairstyle" line of thinking so prevalent on DL, but she needs to lop six inches off of that mess. Why is she forever cosplaying one of the Ewing Oil secretaries from season 1 of DALLAS?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | September 14, 2023 1:08 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 14, 2023 1:17 PM |
None of us want her to get a June Cleaver cut, R24. We just want it long within reason. Those super-long tresses are strictly for the under-25s, who have nothing better to do with their lives than style them and shake them fetchingly at any man who catches their eye. The eye follows the hair down, and if your face is starting to fall you don't want to drag the eye down.

I posted this on another thread that Muriel excised, severed, cut, Pffft, and, I hasten to add, with all attendant puckering of my lips on her behind-I'm sure she has her reasons.
I think Kate is fascinating. She's the only world-famous person who I'm in a state of suspense about; who immobilizes me.
My fascination is paradoxical. It's precisely because she's so thrillingly, perfectly dull, that I await, eyes wide as saucers, a gaffe, a sartorial blunder, an unguarded public moment, that I can't look away.
I see her walking a figurative tightrope that will snap from under her the moment a misstep happens. And, so far, she hasn't made that misstep and the tightrope remains.
Mostly, for all her outward sunny, smiling, polished, public persona, I also see in Kate an invisible, resilient, tough, spine of steel. Cross her at your peril. She'll shade, and wield that shade with a silent stiletto; the kind that that cuts the deepest.

I like long hair with bangs but those aren’t bangs. They’re layers. And somehow they make her long hair look kinda fake. It’s just too long, too much hair… like she trying too hide under it.

R20 wants to talk to your manager.
It’s not that it’s too long, it’s too thick and heavy. It actually looks more like a Wig than extensions, the way it’s sitting so high up on her head. If you zoom into the back part, the hair is so dense and packed together just like a wig. She needs to take that hair hat off and get some of weight cut out of it.
Melania’s hair looks great. It looks like it has movement to it where as Kate’s looks like she needs curtain pulls to keep it out of her face. It’s just way to fucking heavy.

And it’s not a full wig but a partial wig made mainstream famous by Kim Zolciak where the front part is your natural hair and the wig starts just after that. That’s why there is that questionable space right at the front. She has great hair but never that thick and heavy at the bottom. I call wig.

Why not compare her to Jacqueline Kennedy? Neither Catherine nor Jacqueline could have worked as models, but Catherine is much more a classic beauty than Kennedy who had somewhat strange features. Kennedy really wasn’t all that. She is elevated as a result of being from the increasingly distant past and her association with her husband’s tragic death.

It's an odd choice to switch from side hair part to a center part in your 40's, as if she's some zoomer. This won't last. She has twice as much hair now as she did in her teens and twenties so clearly extensions are involved. Maybe she wants it heavy so it doesn't blow as much in the wind? Practicing for wearing that 900lb crown?

I have only seen Kate be chic and gorgeous a handful of times. But I don't follow her closely. Maybe it is more often.

Another vote for too much hair on a skinny woman. I suppose there's some strategy behind it: she likes the long hair for updos for formal events or something like that. I think a shoulder length cut would like nice on her, but she's the most well-styled woman in the world, so what do I know?
by Anonymous | reply 52 | September 14, 2023 5:28 PM |
R13 and R33 both nailed it. I thought her hair was too long before, but was pretty hair. Now it looks fake.
I saw some photos recently where her face looked a little fuller, but this hair is so big I think it makes her face look thinner, more drawn. And the eyebrows look dark and severe. Hair color looks great, though.

R50. Kennedy seems chic because what she wore is 60 years old and now seems striking to us. Her clothes sense doesn’t stand out so much if you compare her to her contemporaries in the early 1960s. We also don’t look at her every day now. What we see of her now is a small selection of what she looked like from day to day. In addition the clothes she wore post-White House look pretty ugly now.
Bad photos of Kennedy look a hundred times worse than the bad photos of Catherine.

Exactly. She's perfectly adequate. She fulfills her anachronistic role as the world's most famous TradWife with passing grades. B+. Fine, indeed.
What she's definitely not is a style icon, a beautiful woman, or the heir to Jackie/Diana/Michelle O. in the minds of anyone but the most feverish and delusional royalists. She's C-list compared to them.
She embodies "plain" in every sense, which is, as you say, fine, for someone who's already performed her main (only) function breeding and procreating with the future monarch. She can relax and be the middle-aged matron she's always dressed and styled like.

She has good hair, assuming it's all hers which I suspect it is. She's always had good hair. Lots of it but that also poses a challenge.
If she lost some length it would make her new bangs pop and give her more body. This drape tendril styling of long hair is for women in their 20s. It's somewhat unsophisticated. She also needs root volume.

Generally when a 40-ish celebrity gets a radically new hairstyle it means that they finally have succumbed to the call of the knife or the needle. The hair (or possibly the makeup) is purposely different enough from the old hairstyle to take the attention off the face. So my educated guess is that she may have had something slightly altered and is using the new hairstyle to diffuse the attention. I'd bet two bucks that she started to get just a tiny bit of fillers. She's at an age when you have to start to make decisions, such as should I choose my face or my derrière. Since she's obviously going for the derrière she needs something to negate the deflated cheeks. A problem La Deneuve never had to face as she went all in on her face and let her derrière expand accordingly.

In comparison with the average female member of the ruling class in the UK Diana and Kate look like supermodels. Diana had charisma and wore clothes much better than Kate, even when the clothes themselves weren't fabulous. That's rare. Kate's dresses all too often wear her rather than the other way round.

[quote]When people talk about Diana looking so exceptional, they are thinking of a handful of events and outfits. If you look back at her now, you really have to wonder what all the fuss was about.
Totally untrue. As one who was there and seeing her in the news every day from pre-engagement to her death, this is what is true:
In the early years of her marriage she was frumpy. The early 80s fashions were frumpy anyway, she was 19, she was brought up a British aristocrat and their look is frumpy (think Laura Ashley, think Princess Anne left to her own devices), and she was miles too thin to carry off the oversized, frilly dresses and sweaters fashionable then. That period is where ALL the bad photos come from.
But between having William and having Harry her style changed. I've read that she asked British Vogue to help her and they did, but whatever the reason, after that her errors were extremely rare. She gained a bit of weight, went more blonde, wore tailored day clothes with matching hats and extravagant 80s gowns in the evenings, and she looked a million dollars day after day, most of it in British designers. There was a lot of really good fashion in the mid-late 80s and Diana had it.
I am, and was, no fan of hers as a person, but it is plain false to say pictures of her looking like a fashion plate are few and far between. There were several every week for years.
Jacqueline Kennedy was far younger than any First Lady in memory at the time, and she was chic in a period when most women couldn't achieve chic. (Nobody wanted to copy the fashion sense of Mamie Eisenhower or Eleanor Roosevelt.) Someone pointed out to me later that her true style was more natural--hair free, jeans and stripes with sweaters over the shoulders, etc--and it's true her features look better in that relaxed mode than in the pillbox hats and skirt suits era. But for women reading Life Magazine, she had the unattainable "princess" look they aspired to have in a leader's wife.
Princess Caroline was a real beauty. It was a pity she didn't marry up and get to do Royal regalia all the time, but I got the impression that would have bored her.
by Anonymous | reply 112 | September 15, 2023 10:58 AM |
Diana went from cutesy and frumpy clothes directly into her Midwestern anchor woman look. Perhaps not enough time has passed for us to appreciate her clothing but, viewed in 2023, little of what she wore looks fashionable. And her hair looks even worse. If you look at the queen in her 20s through early 40s she looks consistently better dressed, but perhaps more time has passed to make her clothes look classic

There's a real effort to discredit Diana as a fashion icon in this thread. It's laughable. At her height she was huge, especially for women and girls but also gay and straight men. Like R112 I'm no fan of her as a person, but the one claim to fame that can't be touched about Diana is that, at her height of fame from the mid-80s until her death, she captivated the public's attention on an almost daily basis. This was a time before the internet as we know it existed, before social media and smart phones, even largely before the explosion of cable television and it's many news and entertainment channels. There's no overstating how famous and followed she was in this era.
People magazine was the Instagram of her era and she appeared in it week after week, along with every other conceivable magazine. She was in local and national newspapers and a fixture on shows like Entertainment Tonight and, later, the tabloid shows like A Current Affair. She was, simply, huge in her day. And I'm saying this as an American who hadn't even been to Great Britain at that time.
Men wanted her, women wanted to be her. Her fashion made headlines regularly. She'd pull some gimmicky stunk like wearing a tiara like a headband and the press would go wild, the public ate it up. The BRF at that time was beyond boring, literally just a stuffy, middle aged woman with a bunch of awkward looking kids. Diana shook all of that to the core and burnished her legend doing it. Sustaining fame like that for a decade+ is extremely rare, but she did it right up until her death.

"Kate is not "beautiful" and neither was Diana."
I think Diana was beautiful, in an unusual and striking way. And she had incredible screen presence and star quality, the camera loved her, even if she had strong and angular features, instead of the sort of generically pretty face that plastic surgeons give all the aspiring actresses.
I don't think Kate is beautiful. She's as stylish and polished as it's possible for a human to be, of course, but I'd call her "attractive" rather than "beautiful" or "pretty". To me, "attractive" is when a person isn't really beautiful, but there's nothing really wrong with their looks, and they make the most of what they have. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was like this, her face was okay but never beautiful, but she made herself into such a glam icon that people started to think she actually was a beauty. Same for Katie.

I think it’s interesting when Kate deliberately dresses in a mid-century style. It’s like she signaling the time when QEII was most popular, post war. Like the Eponine burgundy coat-dress she just wore and all the Emilia Wickstead coat-dresses. She doesn’t want to look dated like Diana did with her early 80s trendy clothes. You say boring, I say timeless, classic. She’s not trying to be glamorous except for a few red carpet/tiara events, then she goes full on.

Hilarious. You just encapsulated why Diana is still a fashion icon decades after her death while Kate is a boring C-list celebrity. "Dated" = fashionable. Kate gets called dowdy and boring exactly because she dresses like a glorified 50s housewife aka her late Grandmother-in-law.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | September 15, 2023 6:54 PM |
Only here is Diana a fashion icon. Who tries or tried to dress like her?
by Anonymous | reply 119 | September 15, 2023 7:06 PM |
r118, not sure you know what “dated”, in this context, means.
All that 80s texture Diana wore-flounces, ruffles, tiers, oversized sleeves, shoulder pads, were pure 80s; instantly recognizable as only of that decade. They do look ridiculous and dated.
And don’t get me started on a wedding dress that could be appreciated only if one enjoys reading bad German folk tales illustrated with a butter-churning milk maids in a frocks made of crumpled kleenex.
Now, one can acknowledge that Kate doesn’t wield nearly the charisma and star power that Diana did. Very few humans in my long lifetime of observing the famous and pop culture have to her degree.
R114 very accurately captures Diana’s fame, a thing truly to behold and maintained before the ubiquity of the internet and social media, no small feat.
But to Kate’s credit, it dawned on me a year ago that she is choosing her garments for posterity. She knows pix of her will still be viewed during her grandchildren’s lifetime and long after she’s dead.
One can say she impeccably boring in her choice of garments, but I think she’s wise for that.
It also maximizes the WOW! Factor when she does go glam, her gold gown at the premier of the latest Bond film being exhibit A of that.

What about the very identifiable Manolo Blahnik Hangisi shoes that she wore in the painted portrait w/William? Yes, a classic style of shoe (pointed toe, narrow heel), but very common. The shoes were made popular from Sex and the City.

R116 is about the only even handed assessment on this thread. I'm curious why so many of you have to demean one or both of them as people? The criticisms are so often very personal, rather than assessments of their style. I'm sorry if either of them hurt your feelings.

I don’t know what’s wrong with you crack addicts on here but she has had nothing done to her face. She looks tired and stressed, and kinda haggard. As anyone at her age in her position would be. Her hair definitely needs a 6-inch slice take off it, as many have said. More, I think. She’d be cute with a mid-to-shoulder-length look. Eyebrows are way too dark, as others have said too. But she’s a strong woman, well put together and tough. She needs to soften, if anything, and those long calculated curls do not cut it.

In the early years, Diana still had a lot of style that hadn’t been seen in the BRF. When she was photographed in more casual clothes, bright red socks tucked into Hunter boots, the black sheep sweater, yellow overalls…if you look at other people in the background, you get a sense of how striking she was.

R134, plastic surgery is far less common in Britain, or anywhere else, than it is in the US. If the Royal Family frowns on nail polish, I don't know that they'd be happy to let Kate go for a facelift or implants.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | September 16, 2023 3:44 PM |
She hasn’t had a facelift or implants, but she has almost certainly had Botox and possibly some fillers. My guess is that she will draw the line there. She doesn’t look old to me, but I thought she looked 40 when she was in her late 20’s. As soon as she got quite thin, she looked very old for her age. Now she looks her age or younger.
I think Diana was quoted once as saying she would have liked to have had a nose job but couldn’t at that point, especially because of the remote risk that something could go wrong. I’m guessing that if she hadn’t married so young she would have. It’s nice that these days a nice like hers is more appreciated, but a lot of women would get it shaved down.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | September 16, 2023 3:56 PM |
It's lovely on her, but I agree with R20. Long hair on women after 40 looks desperate.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | September 16, 2023 4:08 PM |
Botox is sufficient for Kate, and she’s had it. I’d say maybe some microneedling treatments to boost collagen, if she could manage the briefest of downtime.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | September 16, 2023 4:14 PM |

I disagree, at least for U.S. celebrity standards. Pretty much every single actress has shaved down her nose, brought in her nostrils, etc. A large nose like that is still not appreciated, is what I'm saying.
Diana had some other good features (eyes, height, hair) that balanced out her nose. She had nice teeth, too, for a British person.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | September 16, 2023 5:56 PM |
Kate Middleton settled into the job very successfully.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | September 16, 2023 5:59 PM |
It’s a PITA to try and find photos of her by date, but this is from august and her hair looks thinner than normal. Not a clear photo, though.
The main reason I think she is ill is because of the lack of press coverage of her obviously fake hair. I realize that, for example, the DM might hesitate to make fun of her because they prefer to snipe at Meghan. But this just seems like it was dropped at their doorstep with a bow around it. At a minimum I would expect something like, “with her thick mane looking almost supernaturally luscious, Kate’s hair bounced as her trim pins carried her from car to doorstep.”
I think it’s within the realm of possibility that even the British tabloids decided to back off this. She’s 40 and it’s not that uncommon for women that age to develop breast cancer. I’ve know three who were early forties or significantly younger. Two had treatments that caused hair loss, not sure about the third.

She may remove her extensions when she’s mostly off duty during the summer months. She trikes me as the type who would happily go natural when she’s just hanging out with the family at home.
Regarding the fillers, if you look at close ups of her at the coronation, her face is much smoother with her cheeks lifted. It seems pretty clear she had very well done injections before the event. A few years ago, she actually had quite a few wrinkles and her cheeks had really fallen, she had noticeable lines running down her jowls. I think due to her thin weight more than actual aging.
As the ladies used to say, “Face or figure after 40.” Kate is a prime example.

Poor Kate. I wonder if she really understood everything she'd be relinquishing when she agreed to marry William.
Can you imagine how different she would look today if she had married an attorney or stockbroker instead of the heir to the throne? She certainly wouldn't be dressed so conservatively or maintaining such a matronly hairstyle if she was just Kate Middleton Jones living in Chelsea.

I think she knew exactly what she was relinquishing. If anybody had a way out, it was Kate. She and William had broken up for a while. They dated for a long while. She had his picture on her wall before she even knew him. She wasn't out for a career as an attorney or a doctor or a teacher. She wanted to be William's wife. Period.

A friend believes that Diana had a very subtle nose job, while out on maternity leave. Nothing major, just some size and bumps gone, and that might be true.
Here's her 1990s nose, it's aquiline and impressive, but smooth and elegant.

by Anonymous | reply 163 | September 17, 2023 4:23 AM |
I don't see any evidence that Diana had her nose fixed. Before her marriage and during her engagement Diana was quite baby-faced. As she aged and lost weight her face became leaner which made her nose look more prominent. Had she lived I think Diana would have looked very much like her mother. But the nose was always slightly askew, as R160 says-- there was a noticeable difference between Diana's right profile and left profile.

Ironically, Kate’s vanity has cost her her looks. She used to be gorgeous, especially when she was first revealed as William’s girlfriend. She was tall, full-faced and athletic, while having a beautiful head of hair. Youth helped her navigate a period of extreme wait loss without drawing too much attention, but now she’s no different from any other rich woman desperate to hang onto her looks.
In the candid photo from the music festival she doesn’t look pretty, stylish, or even relaxed. She looks sickly and Botox has left her face with a permanent mask-like appearance. Not to mention her body looks emaciated and her personal sense of style is apparently beyond boring. (kudos to her stylist)

I have never gotten a great vibe from Kate. She doesn’t seem malevolent like … certain others. But she does seem aggressively entitled and lacking in ambition.
Her great claims to fame are waiting around for a guy to marry her, having kids, and not eating.
Even with the platform she has, she does remarkably little.
As a feminist, it’s depressing to see this regressive behavior. It’s probably not a coincidence that so many millennial women also chose the “baby factory” route.
GenX and GenZ women seem to want their own careers and identities. Millennial twats just want to shoot out babies and careen around in their disgusting SUVs.

I internalized many years ago that the cause of feminism is profound and necessary.
I thought one of the aspects of feminist activism is, fundamentally, that societal and legal obstacles that deny women their right to live with bodily personal autonomy; make their choices for themselves, should be eliminated. Period. Straight up.
Kate has made her choices. Who are you, or I, to negatively judge that? And I ask this as someone who finds monarchy and its attendant conventions and rules inherently ridiculous.
But damned if it ain't as entertaining as all get out.

The fact is, we know nothing about these people and their internal workings. We know nothing about them, except what we see in their official work. I'll say of all the gossip of unattributed sources, I have never once heard anybody claiming to be on the inside ever say anything negative about Kate. I agree with R172 and the others, I'm a feminist, but if a competent adult wants to make marriage and childhood the focus of their life, and spend at much time at home with the kids as possible, then I wish them the best of luck in finding a circumstance where they can devote more time to their marriage and children than to earning enough to pay for necessitites!
So Katie wanted to marry well and have kids, at a time when the royal family had an opening for a high-level aspiring wife and mother, and they required someone who was intelligent, media-savvy, extremely poised, able to get along with difficult in-laws, and able tolerate endless press scrutiny while staying sane enough to raise children. I like the new hairstyle than that severe, middle-parted hair 95% of women with long hair are wearing.
As for comparing her style to Diana's: Even before she discovered her marriage was a dud, Diana went out of her way to attract attention, but later deliberately plotted to steal the limelight from Charles, along with secretly phoning journalists or even meeting with them. Then there was the Morton book. Some of what she revealed could only hurt her sons. But she let that stuff out into the worldwide media anyway.
Several of her photo shoots with top fashion photographers are something special, really striking. Especially when Patrick Demarchelier snapped her in a tiara. She was at the height of her beauty with the revenge dress, even with the Karen-esque hair. The Dior by Galliano slip dress she wore to the 1996 Met Gala was a misfire: She looked chunky. But she ALWAYS dressed, behaved and existed to be on the front pages.
Didn't she have Borderline PD? The pursuing of married men, the stalker-level number of nuisance calls to her objects of desire, or their wives. Her sad last summer where she was hosted by the Al Fayeds...alternately courting and teasing the paps. She phoned Richard Kay on the day she died.
She was a desperado who had lost her heart surgeon beau due to her love of the spotlight and was trying to make him jealous by appearing in the news with Dodi, a man who was still sleeping with his fiance and used drugs. Then the tragic silliness of trying to outrun people on motorbikes armed only with cameras.
Catherine is likely not interested in being the superstar Diana was. Her husband is a catch and the one who will inherit a kingdom. Unlike Diana, she comes from a stable, happy family and is focused on creating one, not being on the front page. Her Early Years Foundation will help increase knowledge amongst the general population about how to improve quality of life for future generations by looking after babies and young children better. That's quite a legacy.

If the BRF wanted a real woman they would have picked Jackie O instead of Meghan, Diana and some others
“Jackie’s friends in Virginia did not fawn over her the way people tended to do elsewhere. Here in the hunt country, she was not treated as a celebrity. Her fellow equestrians admired her for her horsemanship. That Jackie hunted with Piedmont — a club famous for its speed, big fences, tough hunters, and daring — was testimony to her personal devotion to the sport.
“She was a serious, serious rider,” said one of Jackie’s hunting friends, Barbara Graham, who was an heir to the Johnson & Johnson wax fortune. “Jackie was forever quizzing me on how I did things with my horses. She wanted to know everything. We’d talk for hours on my porch.”
Jackie’s love of horses started at an early age. As a child of six, she began schooling in dressage — the art of controlling a horse with subtle movements of the hands, legs, and weight. She kept a horse at Miss Porter’s, the boarding school she attended in Farmington, Connecticut. It was her Vassar classmate Gay Estin who encouraged her to get a hunt box — a weekend house with a small barn and paddock — in Virginia.“

Diana only grew her hair out once. That was after the birth of either William or Harry. I forgot.
The short hair became her trademark. She probably would have been "prettier" with long hair. Her hair was thick enough to grow it long.
Not many women can get away with shorter styles and she looked good in short hair.

Yes, R198.

New hairstyle? Yeesh. Talk about boring.

She has no hips or lips

Catherine is a beauty who carries clothes beautifully. I love the wool suitings and wish I had a sparkly gold dress for New Years.

Diana's sisters both had the same short haircut and still do, so it seems that's just how they were raised. It suited Diana, especially as a blonde.

Most women of their age have similar short hairstyles. I don't think it was until the late '90s /early aughts that long hair at any age became the fashionable norm.

Her hair looks best straight. As far as curly goes, this is her best look.

Hard and manly face.

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark has a similar hairstyle but she wears it better than Kate. Mary is a sharp dresser.

Mary has softer features than Waity.

Mary's got a pretty sharp chin.

R212, She's an ugly witch and an asshole and a bitch......all with a sharp chin.

R213 Funny how a couple of middle class women marrying up send some of you into an absolute state of apoplexy.
It would be entertaining to see what those of you criticising her appearance look like - stunning, I’m sure!

R214, Sorry, but I was pretending. (Faults on me). I think she's wonderfull.

The Royal forums have a serious hatred for CP Mary of Denmark.

Why? Do they call her the Tasmanian Goldigger?

Only some people can pull off a pixie. I know it's aging, but I'm so sick of long hair that it's actually refreshing.

Because R217, not only was Mary middle class but she was - shudder - Australian.
She has done a flawless job over twenty years which drives the Royal Forum crew crazy.
