This is still a thing?

by Anonymousreply 3September 12, 2023 2:20 PM

I'm shocked MTV would want to air something other than endless marathons of "Ridiculousness."

You can tell it's an important show since it's airing in the middle of the week.

by Anonymousreply 4September 12, 2023 3:01 PM

The VMA producers said that the emphasis this year will be on ( surprise!) hip-hop. Isn't that the case every year? But, at least, that means outrageous fashions and abundant displays of fake tits.

by Anonymousreply 5September 12, 2023 3:32 PM

Oh, well, how is this different from anything else in modern society?

[quote]It’s a year of femme power—women and non-binary artists have scored the most nominations by far.

It's not really impressive or much of a feat if people are forced (or feel compelled) to nominate women/nonbinaries.

It's beyond quotas now. It's almost an obligation. Or else.

by Anonymousreply 7September 12, 2023 3:47 PM

What actually happens at the VMAs these days? Do they actually give out awards? But who's watching videos anymore? Where would you even watch them? It seems like the whole thing has just turned into an excuse to promote "celebrities" competing for attention.

by Anonymousreply 8September 12, 2023 3:57 PM

I just checked to see what else was on TV tonight, and this shit is on like 10 channels!

by Anonymousreply 9September 12, 2023 3:57 PM

I literally never watched after that Kanye West/Taylor Swift thing, that was years ago. Stopped watching and never looked back. The fact Kanye was never banned, Beyonce seemed to love what he did etc., killed MTV for me.

However, I half-hope Billy Porter will be there and if so, I expect you bitches to post pics. I want to see what desperate costume she shows-up in this time.

by Anonymousreply 10September 12, 2023 4:06 PM

The last VMA i watched was when Britney Spears tried to kill herself on stage after Sarah Silverman made fun of her drooped vagina.

by Anonymousreply 11September 12, 2023 4:18 PM

The last one I watched was when Sasha Baron Cohen tried to force Eminem to give him a rim job.

Live from Newark!

by Anonymousreply 13September 12, 2023 4:50 PM

Celebs sure ain't what they used to be, R11 & R12.

by Anonymousreply 14September 12, 2023 9:04 PM

Video Award nominees are a joke. For Best Choreography, show me one better than this one. But, the xenophobia is evident

R9, all channels owned by Viacom/ Paramount except CBS?

by Anonymousreply 16September 12, 2023 10:28 PM

N'Sync looks great. At least two do.

by Anonymousreply 17September 13, 2023 12:13 AM

Is this the official live thread? I hope so.

T Swift looks good tonight.

by Anonymousreply 18September 13, 2023 12:17 AM

It being staged in Newark will always be funny r13. They are too low rent to pay for a venue in NYC now, so have to save money by having it in Newark instead.

by Anonymousreply 19September 13, 2023 12:18 AM

It's the first thread.

by Anonymousreply 20September 13, 2023 12:19 AM

R19 - it looks cheap.

by Anonymousreply 21September 13, 2023 12:19 AM

Funny thing is that pretty much all of the performers are black, but the audience is all young, screaming white women . Why can't any of these "singers" sing live? Roderigo was embarrassing; Lovato is screaming off key.

by Anonymousreply 22September 13, 2023 12:30 AM

Stray Kids! Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!

The show should be called : No Men Allowed. It's all-women, including Billy Porter.

by Anonymousreply 24September 13, 2023 1:42 AM

Which one is butt-ugly Nas, op??

by Anonymousreply 25September 13, 2023 1:44 AM

Rarely has anyone with so little talent shattered the eardrums of those who enjoy songs sung in tune. This is embarrassing.

Too hasty. THIS is the worst performance in the history of television. Makes Miss Lake Dardanelle look like Piaf.

Perhaps they 'wokes' running the show are threatened by the rising popularity of country music (i.e., whites) and are overcompensating this year?

by Anonymousreply 28September 13, 2023 4:37 AM

Review of " whites" from Vulture:

{quote}LOW: Demi and Olivia don’t have the range. [quote]Ah, the perils of live vocals. Rodrigo struggled to reach the heights of “vampire” on the VMAs stage, and she couldn’t even hide behind her “fame fucker” lyric on prime-time television. Just a few minutes later, Demi Lovato rocked out to a fiery medley of some of her biggest hits, but likewise couldn’t quite belt the big notes.

by Anonymousreply 29September 13, 2023 8:43 AM

God, this was must see TV when I was teen in the 90s.

Even up through Gaga's reign it was still good TV.

Now? Yikes. My teenaged nieces and nephews wouldn't be caught dead watching it.

by Anonymousreply 30September 13, 2023 8:47 AM

So, R15 - Anyone who didn't agree with you that a Korean (or Japanese?) boy ban doesn't have the "best" choreography, is slam-dunk xenophobia? Xenophobia that's based in nominating the best dancers in a music video? Really?

Do you think a secret star chamber of klansmen are sitting around doing the nominating and voting on the categories of a tired music video awards show?

by Anonymousreply 31September 13, 2023 4:07 PM

The VMAs embrace K-pop. They have for awhile. It’s not xenophobia. More likely they don’t want to give too many awards to Kpop artists compared to American ones. The American industry is still a business after all.

by Anonymousreply 32September 13, 2023 7:34 PM

Taylor Swift is insufferable.

by Anonymousreply 33September 13, 2023 8:48 PM

Who threw piss on Taylor's hair? She looks like a slob. Tired of getting gaslit by her deluded fans who insist she is beautiful. She looks like her music sounds... dull and forgettable.

And America is now the chief consumer of K-Pop. Show me a better dance and presentation than this at the VMAs... TXT ( the junior group to BTS and Anitta).
