There are restaurants and private clubs that cater to Republicans in DC. There are also restaurants that are frequented by members of both parties and staff personnel, government staff, and media figures. No public restaurant in the area wants a reputation of being politically discriminatory. It would be bad for business. Obviously, they will be strict with patrons who are not properly dressed, or are exhibiting disruptive behavior. Those that fail to sufficiently tip will not receive good service during future visits.

Things are getting scary. I live in a very progressive area of a blue state and nazi hate-mongers are calling into public meetings (a thing since covid) to voice their opinions during the public comment sessions.

They start out with a general question or comment then quickly switch to racist, homophobic, antisemitic and other hate talk. One call after another. They don't use video and they use fake names. It shakes up the public and civil servants, not to mention the kids, who have attended the meetings.

I look at trump, margorie toilet green, matt gaetz, etc., and see nothing but really creepy twisted people. It's so sad and perplexing that so many voters think that they are in any way qualified for public office. They are D-list side show performers.

They are willfully squandering the rights and the faith in democracy that most of us hold dear. It's all about forcing their stupid selves in front of our faces, power, and getting rich. Abominable.

by Anonymousreply 28September 18, 2023 4:38 AM

R28, recently I read a news article about some public figure getting threatening calls, don't remember if it was in Georgia, or if it was somewhere else, but these were scary, hateful, threatening calls. Law enforcement was able to track the calls and finally made arrests. It was three guys in their mid to late 60's! And they looked like a strong wind could knock them over. Not very menacing. They were just nasty, hate filled, evil little POS MAGAs. I think we should all be concerned, but these sick bastards are a lot less than what they seem. What I do think is important is that the people keep getting exposed. A lot of this anonymous intimidation would stop if the covers were ripped off and we could put a face and a name to it.

by Anonymousreply 29September 18, 2023 1:07 PM

R29 here. I think the other thing that would have a dampening affect is if they were penalized. Consequences. If someone had to pay an excessive fine, have their name and photo published for their neighbors and employers to see I think a lot of them, even most of them, would back the fuck off. Basically most of them are fucking cowards anyway.

But as Wexton, 55, failed to respond to treatments as hoped, this summer she found herself confronting a more serious diagnosis: progressive supranuclear palsy.

[quote] The rare neurological disorder — often mistaken for Parkinson’s because the early symptoms are similar — typically progresses more rapidly, does not respond as well to treatment and has no cure. Faced with the reality that her condition will likely only worsen, Wexton said she will not seek a fourth term next year, choosing instead to spend her remaining years with her family.

Not sure where to put this, but late last night I got a news alert from the Atlanta Journal Constitution, (AJC) that the judge in the RICO case against Trump and 18 other defendants ruled that the defense attorneys COULD interview the members of the Grand Jury as part of discovery. I think he is wrong. I think this decision is gonna lead to chaos in the trial. I also don't know how the identities of these people can be protected. They are not legal experts. They are everyday people who decided based on the information presented to them, that t here was sufficient evidence of wrong doing to press charges. It is now up to the Prosecutor to prove her case. Interviewing them is a tactic for the defense to attack them and challenge their reasoning. This is going to get messy.

by Anonymousreply 54September 20, 2023 2:23 PM

Here's the link to the AJC article R54 referenced.

Lawyers defending two defendants in the Fulton County election interference case can interview the grand jurors who handed up the 41-count indictment, a judge ruled Tuesday.

In a seven-page order, Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee said the interviews must be voluntary and stay within the bounds of Georgia law so grand jurors do not disclose their deliberations. McAfee also said he will decide which questions are to be asked and will oversee the interviews, if any of the grand jurors agree to be questioned.

McAfee issued his order in response to requests from lawyers for Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro, two attorneys who are charged with former President Donald Trump and 16 others. Powell and Chesebro both filed speedy trial demands and are scheduled to stand trial on Oct. 23.

Separately, McAfee denied requests from the defense attorneys for copies of all recordings, transcripts and reports produced by the separate special purpose grand jury that spent eight months investigating the case and recommended 39 people be indicted. “(O)ur Supreme Court has recognized that all grand juries require secrecy and protection from certain disclosures,” he wrote....

by Anonymousreply 56September 20, 2023 3:06 PM

Thank you, R55. Last night I just got the headline. When I tried to access the article I got error messages. Yes, R56 voluntary. It's a smart move by the judge and can probably withstand an appeal. If he had summarily denied them they would have made a big stink and in Georgia courts who knows what could have happened with an appeal. But the judge cites Georgia laws, and is scrupulous. Denying them all " transcripts recordings, and reports" preserves the integrity of the Grand Jury process and avoids a shit mess at trial. Trump's lawyers are following his directions so if they did have access they can (and probably will) cast doubt on the process and insist the Grand Jury was comprised of Democrats who hate Trump. Biased and illegitimate. Hopefully no one will volunteer

Homelessness is a direct result of failed housing policies engineered by Republicans. This has been true since Ronald Regan decimated the public housing communities across the country with more than 855 cuts in their budgets. I remember this. I worked in local government. After Reagan you want to talk about Silverado Savings and Loan? In fact the entire savings and loan scandal engineered by Republican policies in banking deregulation, was pretty much contained and while it was reported by the news networks, it was pretty muc hushed up. A rich guy by the name of Keating went to Prison but the Bush family escaped major consequences. Tell me again what did Trump and his mascot Ben Carson do for housing policies?

There are only few defendants who have really good lawyers, smart lawyers. The rest are jackasses like their clients. I think whether you're a good lawyer or a sleazy lawyer your clients ar e jackasses too. But I think uniformly, across the board, they come down to Georgia and they are arrogant enough to underestimate Fani Willis and that Judge. And so far, from what I have seen, you'd be a damned fool to under estimated either one. Don't fuck with Fani. People complained because she took so long to indict. She had two different grand juries. She was meticulous. And she has no fucks to give. None. And if you noticed, the other day Kemp was publicly criticizing MTG and the Sedition Caucus for not dealing with the debt ceiling. Now it has been pretty clear Trump is running that caucus and they're taking orders from him and that's why Kemp criticized them. So I am definitely getting my popcorn ready because the hubris is going to get a lot of people put in Georgia's state prison system, and I would pay money to see that. Trump flaunted the fact that he illegally purchased a Glock yesterday. Hunter Biden was charged with a crime for the same thing. But more important, Trump is signaling again. He is embracing violence. His suggestion that General MIlley be executed wasn't just a figure of speech.

[bold]Donald Trump's business empire in peril as civil fraud trial opens in New York[/bold]

Oct 2 (Reuters) - Donald Trump and his family business are set to stand trial in New York on Monday in a civil fraud case that could deal a major blow to the former U.S. president’s real estate empire.

Trump, the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, is accused by Democratic New York Attorney General Letitia James of inflating the value of his assets by billions of dollars to secure better loan and insurance terms.

Trump plans to attend the first week of trial in state court in Manhattan, according to a court filing in an unrelated case.

The trial comes a week after the judge presiding over the case found Trump liable for fraud and will largely concern the penalties he must face.

James is seeking at least $250 million in fines, a permanent ban against Trump and his sons Donald Jr and Eric from running businesses in New York and a five-year restriction on commercial real estate activities by Trump and his flagship Trump Organization.

Trump has said the case is part of a political witchhunt.

Justice Arthur Engoron ruled last week that James had proven her fraud case against Trump, his two adult sons and 10 of his companies.

Engoron described in scathing terms how they made up valuations. That included Trump calculating the value of his apartment in Trump Tower as if it were three times its actual size.

"A discrepancy of this order of magnitude, by a real estate developer sizing up his own living space of decades, can only be considered fraud," he said.

Engoron canceled business certificates for companies controlling pillars of Trump’s empire -- including Trump Tower and his golf clubs in New York -- and said he would appoint receivers to oversee their dissolution.

The ruling covers only a handful of the roughly 500 entities in Trump's portfolio but includes some of his most valuable properties. The specifics of how that order will be implemented have not been decided, but the loss of those prized assets would be a major blow to Trump's finances. If Engoron tacks on fines and business restrictions, that damage would compound.

The trial is scheduled to run through early December. More than 150 people including Trump are listed as potential witnesses, but much of the trial will likely be a battle of experts opining on financial documents....

Ben Collins thinks he has deciphered "Musk's plan" for Twitter

[quote] Musk’s purchase of Twitter, the 3,000-word anonymous article said, would amount to a “declaration of war against the Globalist American Empire.” The sender of the texts was offering Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO, a playbook for the takeover and transformation of Twitter. As the anniversary of Musk's purchase approaches, the identity of the sender remains unknown.

[quote] The three texts were sent on April 4, 2022. In the nearly 18 months since then, many of the decisions Musk made after he bought Twitter appear to have closely followed that road map, up to and including his ongoing attacks against the Anti-Defamation League, a nonprofit organization founded by Jewish Americans to counter discrimination.

[quote] The text messages described a series of actions Musk should take after he gained full control of the social media platform: [bold] “Step 1: Blame the platform for its users; Step 2: Coordinated pressure campaign; Step 3: Exodus of the Bluechecks; Step 4: Deplatforming.” [/bold]

[bold]McHenry orders Pelosi to vacate Capitol office in one of first acts as Speaker pro tem[/bold]

Speaker Pro Tem Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) ordered Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to vacate her Capitol hideaway office so he could take it over, just hours after becoming acting Speaker, Pelosi’s office said Tuesday.

McHenry became acting Speaker after Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was ousted from the role Tuesday, the first time a Speaker has been voted out of the job.

McHenry’s office requested that Pelosi vacate her Capitol hideaway office by Wednesday because it was being re-allocated “for speaker office use,” the message, first reported by Politico, reads. A small number of senior Representatives have “hideaway offices” inside the Capitol Building.

Pelosi denounced the demand in a statement late Tuesday.

“With all of the important decisions that the new Republican Leadership must address, which we are all eagerly awaiting, one of the first actions taken by the new Speaker Pro Tempore was to order me to immediately vacate my office in the Capitol,” she said.

“This eviction is a sharp departure from tradition,” she continued. “As Speaker, I gave former Speaker Hastert a significantly larger suite of offices for as long as he wished.”

She called on McHenry and House Republicans to focus instead on legislation.

“Office space doesn’t matter to me, but it seems to be important to them. Now that the new Republican Leadership has settled this important matter, let’s hope they get to work on what’s truly important for the American people,” she said.

Pelosi is in California in preparation for the memorial services of Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) later this week. She did not vote on the motion to vacate Tuesday.

“Sadly, because I am in California to mourn the loss of and pay tribute to my dear friend Dianne Feinstein, I am unable to retrieve my belongings at this time,” she added.

Meet Tim Dunn & Farris Wilks—two billionaires from West Texas.

They bought Paxton’s acquittal for $3 million. Now they’re pushing a private school voucher scam.

[bold] Their ultimate goal is even more ambitious: transforming Texas into an authoritarian, Christian Nationalist state. 🧵[/bold]

Dunn & Wilks are oil and gas oligarchs.

They’re also both Christian pastors.

These two billionaire-pastors are spending their fortune enacting an extreme Christian nationalist worldview in the second-largest state in the country.

And no one is talking about it.

Dunn & Wilks have bought the top politicians in Texas with $100+ million in contributions.

And it’s not just politicians. They fund a sprawling network of PACs, think tanks, and media outlets.

Every right-wing policy that's come out of Texas lately goes back to them.

When they’re not buying politicians, Dunn & Wilks both preach at far-right churches.

They push a theology of power, control, and domination — not universal love.

Now their toxic theology is becoming law in Texas.

Just this week, a Dunn & Wilks operative espoused the racist Great Replacement Theory.

She followed it up with a claim that white people are being “genocided.”

This is the Dunn & Wilks worldview.

How significant is their influence?

Every Republican State Senator and over half of Republican House members in Texas have taken money from Dunn & Wilks.

For some Republicans, nearly HALF of their total campaign contributions are from these two billionaires.

And our statewide officials are in their pockets too.

Greg Abbott takes free trips on Wilks' private plane.

Dan Patrick acquitted Ken Paxton after taking $3 million from the Dunn & Wilks PAC fighting the impeachment.

Dunn & Wilks have zero tolerance for opposition.

Their PAC—Defend Texas Liberty—recruits far-right candidates to primary Republicans who don't do their bidding.

It's a win-win: they beat the moderate incumbent or force them to take extreme positions. Dunn & Wilks also control influential legal, policy, & advocacy organizations.

One of those orgs argued in court that pharmacies shouldn't sell birth control.

The lawyer who argued that case (Matthew Kacsmaryk) later became a federal judge.

He banned the abortion pill.

And they've even created their own right-wing media bubble.

Dunn & Wilks fund Texas Scorecard, the top far-right publication.

Wilks owns the Daily Wire and bankrolls PragerU, a right-wing "education" platform they’re trying to force into our schools.

Now they’re taking on their most ambitious project: replacing public schools with Christian schools.

Abbott just called a special session to pass Dunn & Wilks’ voucher scam.

Republican Sen Bob Deuell said: “They want to destroy the public school system”

Dunn & Wilks are executing their plan to dismantle public education:

✔️Fund manufactured controversies to discredit public schools

✔️Pass private school voucher scam to defund public schools

✔️Close public schools and shift our entire system to private, Christian education

There’s been a lot of bad news out of Texas lately.

Paxton’s acquittal, private school vouchers, no-exceptions abortion bans, CRT hysteria, weakened gun laws, Christian nationalism…

It’s all connected to a couple billionaire mega-donors.

Democrats need to get behind Liz Cheney for Speaker and hopefully attract enough Republicans to get her elected. She can be elected Speaker, though she is no longer a member of Congress.

She trash talked Trump after 1/6, but didn’t vote to impeach so she can play both sides depending on the audience and she bonded with the New York Republicans with their shared attempt to expel Santos. [bold]Trump Drops Lawsuit Against Judge Who Doomed His Company[/bold]

A week into his bank fraud trial, Donald Trump late Thursday night dropped his oddly aggressive lawsuit against the judge overseeing the case—a move that had been seen as a last-minute scramble to avert a potential unraveling of the tycoon’s real estate empire.

But that happened anyway when Justice Arthur F. Engoron concluded the former president was a serial liar who faked the size of his buildings and value of his properties for years, ordering the family business’ licenses to be revoked.

Now that the judge is overseeing the next three months of scheduled trial to determine whether the Trump family should be punished and forced to pay $250 million or more, defense lawyers made a court filing that indicates “the Article 78 proceeding is dismissed with prejudice.”

[bold]IRS Places Lien on Rudy Giuliani's $4.5 Million Penthouse After Revealing He Owes $550k in Unpaid Taxes[/bold]

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has taken action against Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor and attorney for former President Donald Trump, by placing a lien on his $4.5 million penthouse.

The federal tax agency claims Giuliani owes $549,435.26 in unpaid income taxes for 2021. The lien, filed in court in Palm Beach County, Florida, allows the IRS to seize some of the profits from Giuliani's condo if it were to be sold.

According to Daily Mail, the penthouse, located in Palm Beach just three miles north of Mar-a-Lago, is estimated to be worth $4.5 million. The apartment is located on the fifth floor of an aging post-modern complex built in 1969 on Palm Beach's west side.

Giuliani, who is currently facing legal troubles including 13 felony counts of racketeering charges, has not responded to a request for comment.

Records show that he purchased the three-bedroom, 2,000-square-foot condo with his then-wife Judith Nathan for $1.4 million in cash in February 2010. After their divorce in 2019, Nathan signed the condo over to Rudy, according to records....

[bold]Judge Aileen Cannon Hands Trump a Win in Delaying Mar-a-Lago Docs Case[/bold]

A federal judge has gifted Donald Trump a step toward getting his classified documents case delayed until after the 2024 presidential election.

On Friday, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon granted a temporary stay on a filing deadline for Trump as she deliberates whether to postpone the entire schedule of pre-trial proceedings. Her order didn’t, however, address whether the May 2024 trial date will be moved. Trump’s legal team had requested in a Wednesday filing that Cannon push back the trial from May to “until at least mid-November 2024.”

His lawyers claimed that prosecutors were refusing to fully disclose their evidence and forced them into a “conflicting schedule,” arguing that the May date was too close to special counsel Jack Smith’s 2020 election interference case against the former president in Washington, D.C. federal court. They also complained that there was a three-month delay in establishing a facility in Cannon’s courthouse to view the classified information.

After The Washington Post reached out to Amazon for comment, Alexa’s responses changed. To questions The Post had flagged to the company, Alexa answered, “I’m sorry, I’m not able to answer that.” Other questions still prompt the device to say there was election fraud in 2020.

[bold]Mike Lindell’s Lawyers Quit En Masse, Say He Owes Them Millions[/bold]

The MyPillow founder and 2020 election denier allegedly racked up millions in unpaid legal fees

MyPillow Founder and CEO Mike Lindell may be flying solo soon.

On Thursday, attorneys representing Lindell and his company in a defamation lawsuit brought by Dominion Voting Systems asked to withdraw from the case, alleging he owes millions in unpaid legal fees.

In the filing, Minnesota-based law firm Parker Daniels Kibort said both Lindell and MyPillow stopped paying fees and would be unable to in the future.

“On October 2, 2023, PDK was informed by Defendants that they are not able to get caught up with or make any payment on the large amount they owe in arrears nor pay for anywhere near the estimated expense of continuing to defend against the lawsuits going forward, including either the legal fees or litigation costs,” the filing read.

Lindell has been embroiled in a series of lawsuits brought by voting machine manufacturers who allege Lindell defamed them by spreading conspiracies regarding their role in the 2020 election. In March, he claimed MyPillow had to borrow almost $10 million to keep the lights on.

In January, Lindell claimed that the sleep sundry company had lost more than $100 million in retail in the aftermath of the 2020 election. The claim was contradicted by Dominion Voting Systems, one of the companies suing Lindell, who alleged the CEO used his claims of electoral fraud to boost sales.

Lindell told Politico Thursday that he does not fault his lawyers decision. “These guys were courageous lawyers. They took on the case when nobody else would… Over the last two months, we haven’t been able to pay these lawyers at all,” said Lindell. “They came to me and said we can’t go on if we can’t get paid. I said, there’s no money.”

[bold]Justice Department fights Trump effort to push Mar-a-Lago trial until after 2024 election[/bold]

The Justice Department is fighting an effort by former President Trump to delay his documents case until after the 2024 election, pushing back on claims the government hasn’t done its part to provide access to evidence.

A recent motion seeking to delay the process through a law governing the handling of classified records in court “was but a precursor to a motion to continue the trial date,” special counsel Jack Smith’s office wrote in the Monday court filing.

“None of the issues raised in the defendants’ motion warrants the continuance they request.”

The request from Trump’s team last week comes amid complaints from his legal team about the amount of classified evidence they’ve been able to review in the case, as well as their workload, as they manage numerous indictments filed against the former president. They asked to delay the case until “at least mid-November 2024.”

The attorneys say they have yet to get access to all classified evidence underpinning charges in a superseding indictment that accused Trump of an additional Espionage Act charge and of trying to delete security camera footage from his Florida home.

Trump’s team also complains that it “only has access to a small, temporary facility in Miami” to view the highly classified records. It must visit the facility in person while managing hearing dates for Trump’s trial on allegations he sought to block the transfer of power after losing the 2020 election.

But the special counsel’s office said Trump’s team is exaggerating its struggles...

"Jeffrey McConney, the Trump Organization’s longtime controller, testified at the civil trial Friday that Weisselberg asked him to assist him in committing tax fraud on multiple occasions, including changing payroll records to hide perks and giving his wife a check for a no-show job so she could qualify for Social Security benefits.

McConney said he went along with it because he feared Weisselberg would fire him if he refused.

In a pretrial ruling last month, Judge Arthur Engoron found that Trump and other defendants including Weisselberg committed years of fraud by exaggerating the value of Trump’s assets and net worth on his financial statements.

As punishment, Engoron ordered that a court-appointed receiver take control of some Trump companies, putting the future of Trump Tower and other marquee properties in doubt. An appeals court on Friday blocked enforcement of that aspect of Engoron’s ruling, at least for now"

[bold]"Tremendous embarrassment": Trump runs to London court after U.S. judge rejected Steele dossier suit[/bold]

Former President Donald Trump has alleged in a London-based lawsuit that former British Intelligence Officer Christopher Steele caused him "personal and reputational damage and distress" by leaking a dossier containing distasteful and unproven accounts of ties between him and Russia during the 2016 presidential race, The New York Times reports. Trump's attorneys argue that Steele's firm, Orbis Business Intelligence, breached British data protection laws with the file, the release of which triggered a political storm just ahead of Trump's 2017 inauguration.

The lawsuit, which was originally filed last November, could fair better for Trump in Britain than in the United States, where a Florida federal judge last year dismissed his lawsuit claiming that Steele, as well as Hillary Clinton and the Democratic National Committee, was part of a plot to circulate false information about Trump's relationship to Russia. In a September court filing, lawyers for Trump said he was “compelled to explain to his family, friends, and colleagues that the embarrassing allegations about his private life were untrue. This was extremely distressing” for the former president, the filing continued, adding that Steele had leveled the claims in a "sensationalist manner" that was “calculated to cause tremendous embarrassment” to Trump. The former president seeks unspecified compensation.

The High Court judge presiding over the suit scheduled a two-day hearing for Oct. 16 and 17, during which attorneys for Steele will move to have the case thrown out. In a witness statement, Steele accused the former president of making "numerous public attacks" upon him and his firm, adding that Trump had launched "frivolous and abusive legal proceedings" against him and Orbis in the United States, a statement that mirrors the Florida judge's ruling.

[quote] Five women filed a lawsuit Monday against Tim Ballard, the founder of the anti-child-trafficking nonprofit Operation Underground Railroad, alleging he exploited the mission of his organization to sexually assault them.

[...]

[quote] The women allege Ballard would ask them to perform lap dances and join him for couples massages. Ballard also would frequent Salt Lake Valley strip clubs, the lawsuit alleges, where he would pay for lap dances, drink alcohol and take pills, all of which was paid for with OUR funds.

[quote] Through the ruses, the suit alleges, Ballard coerced the women to engage in various sexual acts short of penetration, supposedly in order to maintain the appearance that they were a couple. The suit also alleges that Ballard would encourage the women to get a Brazilian wax of their pubic area.

[quote] Each time, it is alleged, Ballard would ask the women, “Is there anything you wouldn’t do to save a child?” He also played on their faith, the suit alleged; almost all of the women accusing Ballard are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I posted the post below accidentally in the Nia Vardalos thread. Someone asked me how Dump could have kept this from Jared, and my response to that poster follows.

Re the war in Israel, I think that Dump told Putin, who told Iran, who told Hamas how to get around Israeli defenses. I am 100 percent sure of this. Putin is running the show. He is sowing chaos around the world where he can and is biding his time re Ukraine. He’s betting there is no appetite for two wars and the US will focus support in Israel. This is the conversation Dump had privately with Putin. I can’t figure out any way this can be investigated or proven, but I’m so sure this is what happened.

My follow up post: I think Dump simply did not tell Jared. I believe Dump told Putin whatever Putin wanted, and Putin ran with it. Remember the private conversation they had when they asked the American interpreter to leave the room? Or it could have been at any time really. How else would Hamas get the info it needed? And they definitely had incredible intel about Israel’s defenses. Dump doesn’t care about anyone—including Jared and Jews in Israel—except himself.

[bold]As The GOP Slams Biden On Israel, No One Mentions Trump's Dangerous Intel Leak[/bold]

WASHINGTON ― As Republicans try to link President Joe Biden’s release of $6 billion of frozen Iranian money as part of a prisoner swap to the weekend terrorist attack on Israel, they continue to ignore the documented damage done to that country’s security by the de facto leader of their party, Donald Trump.

Less than four months into his term, the coup-attempting former president was bragging to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ambassador Sergei Kislyak during their Oval Office visit about the quality of the briefings he was receiving, and as proof offered details about a secret Israeli intelligence operation into Syria.

Israeli intelligence officials were incensed upon learning of the leak because, given Russia’s close ties to Iran and Syria, they had to assume that their local source for the information had been compromised and possibly killed, according to Israeli press accounts at the time.

“If indeed Trump, out of innocence or ignorance, leaked information to the Russians, then there is a real danger to sources that it took years to acquire, and to our working methods,” an Israeli intelligence source told journalist Ronen Bergman...

She had to get a copy of her birth certificate and go up to the registration office in person.

There was a WaPo (or maybe NYTimes) feature a few years ago about this that I unfortunately cannot put my hands on at this moment.

As I recall, a huge portion of it was about how people--most frequently women--get disenfranchised because they lose possession of documents as they are fleeing such things as domestic abuse and substandard housing (flooded basements apartments, fire caused by bootleg wiring...) and homelessness. An added, very common occurrence with these laws (presumably intentionally) is not allowing women to vote if they cannot produce a marriage license and/or divorce decree justifying a name change.

Look at the percentages of who votes for Democrats vs. who votes for the GOP. Stopping minorities, women independent enough to divorce, and even the generic "soccer mom", decidedly favors those who are passing these type of laws.

by Anonymousreply 349October 12, 2023 11:45 PM

In our little "Mayberry", it wouldn't surprise me. She talks about Dump as if she were talking about a lover or Jesus Christ himself.

[bold]GOP’s Scalise ends his bid to become House speaker after failing to secure the votes to win gavel[/bold]

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Steve Scalise ended his bid to become House speaker late Thursday after hardline holdouts refused to back the party’s nominee, throwing the GOP majority into deeper chaos with the chamber unable to function.

Scalise told GOP colleagues at a closed-door meeting late Thursday of his decision and pointedly declined to announce backing for anyone else, including his chief rival, Rep. Jim Jordan, the hardline Judiciary Committee chairman backed by Donald Trump who had already told colleagues he no longer would seek the job.

Next steps are uncertain as the House is essentially closed while the Republican majority tries to elect a speaker after ousting Kevin McCarthy from the job.

“I just shared with my colleagues that I’m withdrawing my name as a candidate for speaker-designee,” Scalise said as he emerged from the closed-door meeting at the Capitol.

Scalise, R-La., said the Republican majority “still has to come together and is not there.”

He had been working furiously to secure the votes after being nominated by a majority of his colleagues, but after hours of private meetings over two days and late into the evening at the Capitol it was clear lawmakers were not budging from their refusal to support him.

“There are still some people that have their own agendas,” Scalise said. “And I was very clear, we have to have everybody put their agendas on the side and focus on what this country needs.”

Asked if he would throw his support behind Jordan, Scalise said, “It’s got to be people that aren’t doing it for themselves and their own personal interest.”

He said he would push quickly for a resolution. “But it wasn’t going to happen. It wasn’t going to happen today. It wasn’t going to happen tomorrow. It needs to happen soon, but I’ve withdrawn my name.”

Frustrations have mounted as the crisis deepened and Republicans lost another day without a House speaker. Scalise was trying to peel off more than 100 votes, mostly from those who backed Jordan.

But many hard-liners taking their cues from Trump have dug in for a prolonged fight to replace McCarthy after his historic ouster from the job. They argued that Majority Leader Scalise was no better choice, that he should be focusing on his health as he battles cancer and that he was not the leader they would support. No House votes were scheduled. ...

The latest campaign filing from Lauren Boebert's campaign account reveals that she spent $317.48 on July 31, 2023, at the Hooch Craft Cocktail Bar owned by her former boyfriend Quinn Gallagher.

It is not clear exactly what she used campaign funds for at her boyfriend's bar. The expenditure is listed as "Event Catering." An internet search turned up no campaign events that had been advertised or promoted at the bar by Boebert or her campaign.

Boebert and Gallagher were ejected from the Beetlejuice show in Denver last month. She later said they were no longer dating.

Here's why Trump won't flee the country:

No foreign leader will accept him without $$$$$. Lots of it. Secondly, he is very high maintenance. Very demanding. Now there's a way around all that. All Jared has to do is call his buddy, MBS, and tell him he will pay for Dad to live in the kingdom for maybe two years, and he will pay a monthly "fee" for that. But Trump will die from an "undisclosed illness" about 18 months into his stay. The way I figure it, the whole thing may cost Jared about $10 million, but it's worth it. Jared would make Ivanka happy, and he'd eliminate a problem.

by Anonymousreply 401October 19, 2023 5:48 PM

Powell’s legal fees would be in the tens of thousands. It’s not like she’s being defended on a second DUI.

Her attorneys got her a pretty good deal. She received no jail time, pleaded guilty to only misdemeanors, and 6k is soft with fines and she stretch-out payments for the duration of the probation.

What the prosecutors got is her agreement to testify truthfully against other defendants if/when called to do so. If she doesn’t, the deal is negated.

[quote]Under terms of Chesebro's plea deal, he's been ordered to pay $5,000 in restitution and will serve five years of probation. He also must complete 100 hours of community service and write an apology letter to the citizens of the state of Georgia.

"In his interviews with prosecutors, Mr. Pratt recounted how Mr. Trump once revealed to him sensitive information about American nuclear submarines, an episode that Mr. Trump denies. Another witness told prosecutors about hearing uncorroborated reports that Mr. Pratt spent $1 million for tickets to a Mar-a-Lago New Year’s Eve gala — voluntarily paying the club a huge markup for tickets that actually cost $50,000 or less, according to two people with knowledge of the previously unreported testimony.

New details of how an American president and an Australian billionaire bonded over their mutual self-interest help to document the transactional ethos of the Trump presidency, and show how Mr. Trump melded his White House with his personal business in a way that, according to prosecutors, had ramifications for national security."

[bold]Fourth defendant negotiates plea deal with Fulton prosecutors[/bold]

Attorney Jenna Ellis on Tuesday became the fourth defendant in the Fulton County election interference case to strike a deal with prosecutors.

In exchange for her cooperation, Ellis pleaded guilty to one count of aiding and abetting false statements and writings. The count stems from her testimony before a Georgia Senate subcommittee on Dec. 3, 2020. Along with co-defendants Rudy Giuliani and Ray Smith, Ellis “knowingly, willingly, and unlawfully” made false statements about election fraud in Georgia, according to her new charging document.

Under the terms of the agreement, Ellis must serve five years probation, 100 hours of community service and pay $5,000 in restitution to the Georgia Secretary of State’s office. She agreed to testify truthfully when called, provide documents and other evidence, refrain from posting about the case on social media and to pen an apology letter to Georgia voters.

Ellis’s plea deal came less than a week after two of the case’s other co-defendants, Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro, struck similar agreements with Fulton prosecutors just days before they were set to go to trial.

RepMikeJohnson is poised to be the next Speaker of the House (I don’t think I’m jinxing it frankly). Many have noted my case against @PatrickMcHenry for his quiet homophobia. Johnson, however, isn’t quietly bigoted. He’s THE literal ringleader against #lgbt equality in the Congress. No other sitting Member has a record as king and histories as Johnson’s when it comes to these issues. Frankly, this is a major reason he’s garnering support across a wide spectrum of the @HouseGOP conference. He’s quiet yet lethal. Seemingly ineffective but plays the long game very well. His work over the years with radical rightwing “think” groups is well established. [bold] He desires the overturn of Obergefell and will stop at nothing to attain it. In short, his entire career has focused on destroying lgbt equality gains. [/bold] This isn’t even disputable. His record is his record.

To suggest Johnson is a mainstream Republican is sadly correct. He’s well within the mainstream of House and Senate Republicans in that he’s radically rightwing and will stop at nothing to attain power in order to devolve every possible issue down to the state level as most political confederates want. Doing so will destroy a centralized federal Govt, the penultimate and public goal of the republicans since the Gingrich speakership.

That’s who Rep Mike Johnson is: a radical Louisiana confederate Republican.

Will he succeed? That’s for first his constituents to decide, then the American people to decide in next year’s elections. If he presides over a Congress for 13 months but then loses his title, it’ll be a slight setback for him bec again he only see the long game. His only goal is to destroy from within the US government and send as much power back to the states as he possibly can, consequences be damned.

That’s the man who’s about to become the 56th Speaker of the House.

[bold]Colorado judge paves way for trial on whether 14th Amendment disqualifies Trump from office[/bold]

A Colorado judge has rejected another attempt by former President Donald Trump to throw out a lawsuit seeking to block him from the 2024 presidential ballot based on the 14th Amendment’s “insurrectionist ban.”

The ruling Wednesday from Colorado District Judge Sarah Wallace clears the way for an unprecedented trial to begin next week, to determine if Trump is disqualified from returning to the White House because of his role in the January 6, 2021, insurrection.

This is the fifth unsuccessful bid by Trump to throw out the Colorado case, which is one of several pending suits trying to derail his candidacy based on the 14th Amendment.

The 14th Amendment, which was ratified after the Civil War, says US officials who take an oath to uphold the Constitution are disqualified from future office if they “engaged in insurrection” or have “given aid or comfort” to insurrectionists. But the Constitution does not spell out how to enforce the ban, and it has only been applied twice since the 1800s.

In a 24-page ruling, Wallace rejected Trump’s argument that questions about his eligibility should be handled by Congress, not courts. She also rejected Trump’s argument that the Colorado election officials don’t have the power to enforce the so-called “insurrectionist ban,” which is enshrined in Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.

“The Court holds that states can, and have, applied Section 3 pursuant to state statutes without federal enforcement legislation,” Wallace wrote.

She said the trial will focus on several key questions, including whether the events of January 6 “constituted an insurrection” and whether Trump “engaged” in insurrection.

Trump has denied wrongdoing regarding the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. He pleaded not guilty to state and federal charges stemming from his attempts to overturn the 2020 election.

His campaign has condemned these “absurd” lawsuits and said the groups pushing these candidacy challenges are “stretching the law beyond recognition.”

[bold]US congressman Santos pleads not guilty to new felony charges[/bold]

NEW YORK, Oct 27 (Reuters) - U.S. Representative George Santos pleaded not guilty on Friday to a 23-count indictment accusing him of an array of corruption, including 10 felony counts that federal prosecutors added this month.

Santos, 35, entered his plea before U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert in Central Islip, New York, on Long Island. A trial is scheduled for Sept. 9, 2024.

The Republican first-term congressman had in May pleaded not guilty to 13 charges, including laundering funds to pay for his personal expenses, illegally receiving unemployment benefits, and lying to the House of Representatives about his assets.

His additional charges included accusations that he charged donors' credit cards without their consent, and reported a bogus $500,000 campaign loan.

The plea came one day after fellow Long Island Republican congressman Anthony D'Esposito called on the House to expel Santos, saying Santos was "not fit to serve his constituents."

Expulsion requires a two-thirds vote. Republicans hold a 221-212 majority in the House, and at least several dozen would have to vote against Santos for him to be expelled.

On Thursday, Santos posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he was not resigning and was "entitled to due process and not a predetermined outcome as some are seeking."

“One of the biggest revelations to me in my conversations with Romney was just how important the threat of political violence was to the psychology of elected Republicans today,” said McKay Coppins, author of Romney: A Reckoning.

He recalled Romney telling him “story after story about Republican members of Congress, Republican senators, who at various points wanted to vote for impeachment—vote to convict Trump or vote to impeach Trump—and decided not to, not because they thought he was innocent, but because they were afraid for their family’s safety. “They were afraid of what Trump supporters might do to them or to their families.”

[bold]Mike Pence Ends Presidential Bid[/bold]

“Former Vice President Mike Pence, who spent four years dutifully serving President Donald Trump but refused to carry out Mr. Trump’s demand that he block the 2020 election results, ended his presidential bid on Saturday, with a final appeal for his party to return to conservative principles and resist the ‘siren song of populism,’” the New York Times reports.

“The surprise announcement came at the end of his remarks before a crowd of Jewish Republican donors in Las Vegas, and was met with gasps of surprise. Mr. Pence had received a warm welcome and a standing ovation, and opened his speech with a full-throated endorsement of Israel’s military operations in Gaza.”

[bold]Trump Says Legal Fees Have Surged Past $100 Million[/bold]

Former President Donald Trump said he has spent over $100 million in legal fees as he fights a litany of legal battles.

While speaking at a rally in Iowa on Saturday, the former president claimed to have turned down multiple business opportunities while in office, which he said he rejected because he "respected the office."

“They made it much worse with legal fees," Trump said. "At least I have good lawyers, because you can spend $100 million and have lousy lawyers too. It happens.”

Trump is facing criminal charges in four different jurisdictions, including Georgia, New York, Florida and Washington, D.C., as well as an ongoing civil fraud trial in New York City.

House GOP chairmen say DC attorney general's probe of conservative legal activist Leonard Leo is 'politically motivated'

[quote] It was reported in August that D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb launched an investigation into Leonard Leo, co-chairman of the conservative Federalist Society, after one of Leo’s nonprofits paid tens of millions of dollars to one of Leo's for-profit companies.

[...]

[quote] Schwalb's investigation is threatening Republican donor privacy, according to a letter sent to the D.C. attorney general from House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky.

[...]

[quote] The lawmakers requested that Schwalb provide them with all documents and communications related to his probe of Leo, including any communications with outside groups. The request comes after a progressive watchdog group, the Campaign for Accountability, filed a complaint with the IRS in April, asking the agency to probe Leo’s network of nonprofit organizations.

[...]

[quote] Jordan and Comer, instead, argue in the letter that Schwalb should worry about crime in the D.C. area, pointing to statistics that show a rise in crime rates — specifically violent crime — in the city. Numbers from the D.C. Police Department show total crime is up 27% in 2023, with violent crime up 41%.

[bold]Trump should be disqualified from 2024 ballot over Jan. 6 riot, advocates say at trial[/bold]

Oct 30 (Reuters) - Donald Trump should be disqualified from Colorado's ballot in next year's election because he "incited a violent mob" in Washington on Jan. 6, 2021, an advocacy group lawyer argued at the opening of a trial on Monday.

A lawsuit brought by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington is a test case for whether a rarely-used, Civil War-era provision of the U.S. Constitution that bars people who have engaged in "insurrection or rebellion" from holding federal office, can prevent Republican Trump from being president again.

"Trump incited a violent mob to attack our Capitol, to stop the peaceful transition of power," Eric Olson, an attorney representing voters and the advocacy group said in an opening statement of the one-week trial before a Colorado District Court judge.

Then-president Trump spent weeks before the Jan. 6 riot spreading false claims of widespread voter fraud in his November 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden and encouraging his supporters to rally in Washington. He then encouraged them to march on the U.S. Capitol where Congress was certifying Biden's win. Only after hours of violence did he appeal to the rioters to go home.

A lawyer for Trump, Scott Gesler, denied that Trump incited supporters to violence and said it would set a dangerous precedent to disqualify him based on "legal theories that have never been embraced by a state or federal court."

"People should be able to run for office and shouldn't be punished for their speech," Gesler told the court during his opening statement.

Colorado is regarded as safely Democratic by nonpartisan election forecasters, so regardless of whether Trump is on the ballot, President Biden is expected to win the state.

Trump's opponents are testing whether they have a viable path to keep him off ballots in individual states. Trump faces similar lawsuits brought by advocacy groups in Michigan and Minnesota. The Colorado case is the first to go to trial....

[bold]Trump fights loom large for a Supreme Court that has tried to ignore him[/bold]

Donald Trump is staring down four criminal prosecutions that could lead to his imprisonment, a civil trial that threatens to dismantle his business empire and a series of lawsuits aimed at throwing him off the ballot in next year’s presidential race.

Yet, on Wednesday, the Supreme Court will take up an entirely different Trump-related case: the weighty dispute over whether a T-shirt maker can get a trademark for a mocking reference to Trump’s genitalia.

The slogan at the center of the case — “Trump Too Small” — could just as easily describe the Supreme Court’s view of many of the former president’s legal entanglements since he lost his bid for reelection in 2020....

R546, The Supremes have a problem. They ruled against Trump on the election related cases that got to them, in 2020/2021. Trump challenged the election results more than 60 times and was overruled and defeated every time. This makes me believe they will be consistent. Alito and Thomas were the election deniers...at first, but if I recall, Alito was the one who stopped one of Trump's "tantrum" cases. Not sure.

Kevin Wallace just said the magic words, “The people call Donald J. Trump,” and he just took his sworn oath to tell the truth. Judge Engoron just instructed Trump to speak more loudly and into the microphone. That’s a new one, I think, for him. Trump confirms he is the owner of all the assets in the Trust and the beneficiary thereof; he says that around the time he won, he moved the Trump Org into the trust to avoid conflicts of interest, although he maintains that he could have had two desks as Washington did. He made Weisselberg a trustee because he had been with the company for a long time; he did a good job; and we really liked him. As for Don Jr., he was named as a trustee because he is a “good boy, or man and an honorable one.” Trump testified that in 2021, he restored himself as sole trustee of the Trust because he figured he’d be back in business until he decided to go back to politics or do whatever he had to do. Now Wallace is asking Trump why he removed himself again as the sole trustee as of July 7, 2021. “I think we had a position where I was gaining more and more confidence in my family.” Trump then alludes to being under investigation by the US Attorney, the Attorney General, the Manhattan DA, “all Trump haters, all Democrats,” who weaponized their offices against him. But asked whether that’s why he appointed Don Jr. again, he demurs and says it was more because he was getting back into politics. Trump has now testified that he reviewed his statements of financial condition, and “maybe, on occasion, suggest decisions,” before they were finalized. But because they had a “very powerful” disclaimer clause — what he calls the “worthless clause” — he says they were NOT documents the banks “paid much attention to.”

by Anonymousreply 588November 6, 2023 4:15 PM

Asked how he knew the banks paid little attention to his financial statements, he said it was from his course of dealing with banks for 50 years; their interest was in the deal. Trump: “They just weren’t a very important element in a bank’s decision making process, and we’ll explain this as this very crazy trial goes along.” Wallace now starts taking Trump through the 2014 statement of financial condition, in which the second paragraph states that Trump himself is responsible for the preparation and presentation of the financial statement in accordance with GAAP. Trump doesn’t resist that but says if Mazars had a problem with the data, they should have spoken up. Then asked what he personally did to ensure the preparation and presentation financial statement was in accordance with GAAP, Trump says it was a long time ago, and outside the statute of limitations, but the judge will rule against him because he always rules against him. Engoron reminds Kise that it is simply untrue that he always rules against Trump and then addresses Trump himself, “You can attack me, but just answer the question.” “I authorized whatever they needed to get their statement done, they could do.” They, Trump clarifies, refers to Mazars. Wallace asks him who he authorized to give information to Mazars. “Principally Allen Weisselberg and Jeff McConney.”

by Anonymousreply 589November 6, 2023 4:18 PM

But asked whether he gave them any specific instructions for providing that information, Trump says, “Not really.” Were you responsible for setting the value of your financial assets? “I think I was certainly more expert than anyone else, so if somebody would ask me or if I had an opinion, I would give it,” Trump said. “Do you remember thinking some of those valuations were off?” On occasion, Trump said. Mar-a-Lago was “very underestimated,” but I left it alone because “I didn’t care;” I thought 40 Wall Street and Doral were underestimated as well. Trump is now complaining about the judge assessing the value of Mar-a-Lago at $18 million when it had a value of “50 to 100 times that.” The apartment he said, by contrast, he thought was overvalued, but it only takes one person to buy it. “The most valuable asset was the brand value and that wasn’t on the statement,” Trump digresses. “If I wanted to build a statement to show how reach we really are, I would have included brand value.” “I became president because of my brand. If I wanted to build up a statement because of my brand, all I would have to do is add brand value and my financial statement would be very very substantial.” Wallace asks whether brand value can be included in financial statements under GAAP. Trump insists yes, because major companies like Coke do so, but he did not ask Weisselberg about it because he “didn’t care enough about it to bother him.”

by Anonymousreply 590November 6, 2023 4:20 PM

Trump said the statements were not very important financially, and he discussed them with Weisselberg “very little.” He insists no developer he knows has done a financial statement so detailed and that so understates the value of his assets by “a substantial amount.”

I cannot underscore how much this case visibly irks Trump. He is now attacking Wallace: “Everybody got their money in full, and now you’re assuming the statements are phony!”

by Anonymousreply 591November 6, 2023 4:21 PM

Judge Engoron to Trump's attorney: "I beseech you to control him if you can. If you can't, I will. I will I excuse him and draw every negative inference that I can."

[bold]Trump Interview Unnerves Staff at Univision[/bold]

Dylan Byers: “Earlier this week, former president Donald Trump gave an interview to Univision, the Spanish-language broadcaster, during which he threatened to weaponize the F.B.I. and the Justice Department against his political opponents. The statements, which came on the heels of a Washington Post report revealing that Trump and his allies had been drawing up plans to use the federal government to retaliate against adversaries and former cabinet members, were arguably the most brazenly authoritarian remarks the presumptive Republican presidential nominee has made to date in a mainstream media interview. And the interview reasonably unnerved the political pundit class—’dangerous’ and ‘insane’ are among the words that have reverberated across cable news in the last 24 hours.”

“Inside Univision, however, the hour-long sit-down raised alarms for another reason. The interview, which was conducted by a non-Univision journalist who did little to question or push back on Trump’s claims, effectively functioned as a propaganda special, current and former Univision journalists have protested. In it, they saw glaring evidence of a broader effort by their new parent company, which has close ties to Trump and especially to his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, to curry favor with the former president and push the network further to the right.”

He has always had t hese impulses towards fascism, but his understanding of it was crude. These people are smarter than him. Guys like Stephen Miller, who has been practically invisible. The power behind the Neo Fascist movement hasn't been exposed and we need to do that.
