I agree with you, OP. My only previous experience with Fred MacMurray was the slightly befuddled dad on MTS.

If you haven't already, watch "Double Indemnity" in which Fred costars with Barbara Stanwyck. Freddie's a fast talking, hustling insurance salesman hot to trot with Barbara's character, quite a 180 from MTS. Added bonus: Edward G. Robinson is Fred's boss.
