The author asks “Why isn’t a mainstream Democrat challenging the president?” The answer is because we know Joe Biden delivers and these challengers would be soundly defeated in the primaries.
Dem Prez Candidates Are Afraid to Take on Mighty Joe Biden

Duh. What kind of nasty fucking Democratic cunt tries to destroy a very successful Democratic President of the United States?
I know Ted Kennedy tried it back in Carter's day but he was wrong and it was a fucking disaster. Nobody with any sense is going to try it again (at least not in my lifetime).

Because every Democrat in their right mind sees Joe Biden has done a kick ass job! He has overperformed every one of his millions of naysayers including those on the left!

Because we don't buy into the dingbat narrative that some magical figure like Newsom or Michelle Obama just HAS to swoop in and take over. It's a stupid fantasy and we see no reason to embrace it.

by Anonymous | reply 5 | September 10, 2023 2:37 AM |
The only realistic challenger is Pritzker, but he's a fat fuck like Trump and Christie.
He has all that Hyatt money to fund a campaign, but he knows what everybody else does: Biden maintained that he would be a recovery president and pass the torch after one term. But he reneged and here we are. None of the candidates from 2020 are electable so it would have to be somebody else. Manchin? Fuck that. Harris? Nope. We got into bed with Biden and we'll just have to wait until he corks off, which might be during a second term after all.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | September 10, 2023 2:40 AM |
It's Biden versus Trump r5. That's the lineup. Count on it. Don't invent fantasies about perfect Democratic candidates. Go with reality. It's happening.

R7 I have no clue what you're talking about. I'm worried about Biden in the general election. I am not implying Biden should be replaced. I'm worried he'll lose in November against whoever the GOP nominates. I'm not "inventing fantasies" and I'm well in touch with reality.
Are you?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 10, 2023 3:27 AM |
That's fine r8. Worry is fine. Make the Biden re-election happen to the best of your ability. What we don't need is nonsense about RFK Jr or Newsom or anybody else. That is dingbat bullshit and nobody needs to waste their time with it.
It will be a fight. It always is. This country is incredibly stupid and might just re-elect Trump, the shittiest president in human history, also a criminal, and a traitor. We need to all prevent that.

Biden has been GREAT - if you don't believe me, look up all of his accomplishments.
I dare say he's been better than Obama - but Obama had inherited us being on the brink of financial disaster to contend with. Slightly easier than going into a term of a pandemic with the vaccine being available.

It's not that no one dares, it's that it goes against established political wisdom and just plain common sense. Primaries when a sitting president declares he's running again shouldn't even be a thing, they're a complete and needless waste of money for the party already in the White House.

President Biden never said he'd only serve for one term. Where are you getting this loony shit from, Sean Shamitty?
The president is just three years older than his opponent, Mr Trump. They're both old although the president isn't as fat or sedentary as Mr Trump. The people catastrophizing about the president are all Rethuglican propagandists. They know that the president will beat Mr Trump again and even more easily this time.
Besides, Fuckface von Clownstick is much too busy with 91 felony charges (and more on the way!) in four separate jurisdictions (and more on the way!) to seriously bother with losing the presidential election again.
He'll do it, sort of, to try to stay out of prison but it's not going to work. He will never win another election (if he even won one, which is dubious at best), his political career is over. He'll be lucky to get 30 years on house arrest.

by Anonymous | reply 49 | September 11, 2023 6:01 PM |
The Rethuglican propagandists claim that the president is too old (while supporting Dump who is the same age).
Democrats are thrilled with the job the president has been doing and feel bad for him staying on the job for so long but know how important it is. We'll all turn out to vote for him both because of his great successes as POTUS an because he will destroy Dump once and for all.
Our minds are perfectly made up. We only have one lane that that lane is the re-election of president Joseph R. Biden. Our turnout will be fucking massive.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | September 11, 2023 6:02 PM |
Any president with iffy numbers and a viable primary challenger ends up losing. It splits the party and its hard to put humpty dumpty back together again for the general. Idiots say that it helps the incumbent president because it kicks their campaign into high gear, identifies what works and what doesnt...that can definitely be true for house, senate, and governors races. Not true with an incumbent president.

Brazile’s warning came as a new CNN poll last week put Biden’s job approval rating at 39%. Almost three-quarters of people are “seriously concerned” about his age, the survey also found. Registered voters marginally backed Trump (47%) over Biden (46%) in a replay of the 2020 election, the poll noted.

Nobody's challenging the POTUS because the POTUS is in a very strong position with a great record to run on. Meanwhile, the leading candidate against him has 91 felony charges (so far!) in four jurisdictions (so far!).

Why so angry R66? If you really believe what you say why resort to insults? btw have you seen the poll conducted by CNN? It doesn't necessarily comport with what you're saying.
President Biden’s approval rating has dropped to 39%, according to the latest poll.
The poll, conducted by CNN, shows the president’s approval dropped 2 percentage points from July and 6 percentage points from January. Biden’s numbers on handling the economy were particularly troubling for Democrats, with 58% of respondents saying his presidency worsened economic conditions in the country, up 8 percentage points from the same time last year.
Only 26% said they felt Biden had the stamina and sharpness to serve effectively as president, compared to 74% who said he did not. Biden faired only slightly better – 28% -for those who said Biden inspires confidence in voters compared to 72% who said he does not. Overall, 70% said things were going either pretty badly or very badly in the country.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | September 11, 2023 10:14 PM |
Don’t (unduly) despair. Trump will likely be the opponent. His support among suburban woman had irredeemably cratered even before Covid & all that he’s since done has only cemented that basic fact. As Biden is fond of saying, “Don’t compare me to the Almighty; compare me to the alternative.”
by Anonymous | reply 68 | September 11, 2023 10:30 PM |
I literally could not give a flying fuck what polls say. Remember how Hillary was gonna crush Trump according to the polls? Or how there was supposed to be a huge red wave in 2022? Hell, I donated to Democrats in Maine and South Carolina in 2020 because "the polls" said the races were close, which turned out to be nowhere near the case. Polls are honestly garbage at this point.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | September 11, 2023 10:43 PM |
These polls are a gift to Democrats. We don’t want to think Biden’s a shoo-in. That sentiment may have doomed Hillary.

"The early polls show Donald J. Trump and President Biden tied nationwide. Does that mean Mr. Trump has a clear advantage in the battleground states that decide the Electoral College?
It’s a reasonable question, and one I see quite often. In his first two presidential campaigns, Mr. Trump fared far better in the battleground states than he did nationwide, allowing him to win the presidency while losing the national vote in 2016 and nearly doing it again in 2020.
But there’s a case that his Electoral College advantage has faded. In the midterm elections last fall, Democrats fared about the same in the crucial battleground states as they did nationwide. And over the last year, state polls and a compilation of New York Times/Siena College surveys have shown Mr. Biden running as well or better in the battlegrounds as nationwide, with the results by state broadly mirroring the midterms."

You did not post a rebuttal to your postulation, another question validated the need for a primary challenge. You reinforced that Biden was weak and in need of a challenger. Whole bundle of opinions.
You frigging jackoff. Pointless ad Hominem opinion.
If you had half a brain...and hang your head in shame and embarrassment. Gurl appears to think highly of herself. UNSUBSTANTIATED opinions.

President Joe Biden's job approval rating is 19 points underwater, his ratings for handling the economy and immigration are at career lows. A record number of Americans say they've become worse off under his presidency, three-quarters say he's too old for another term and Donald Trump is looking better in retrospect -- all severe challenges for Biden in his reelection campaign ahead.
Forty-four percent of Americans in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll say they've gotten worse off financially under Biden's presidency, the most for any president in ABC/Post polls since 1986. Just 37% approve of his job performance, while 56% disapprove. Still fewer approve of Biden's performance on the economy, 30%.
On handling immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border, Biden's rating is even lower, with 23% approval. In terms of intensity of sentiment, 20% strongly approve of his work overall, while 45% strongly disapprove. And the 74% who say he's too old for a second term is up 6 percentage points since May. Views that Trump is too old also are up, but to 50% in this poll, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates.

Trump, for his part, has improved in retrospect. When he reluctantly left office in January 2021, 38% approved of his work as president, essentially the same as Biden's rating now. But currently, looking back, 48% say they approve of Trump's performance when he was in office -- matching his peak as president. Essentially as many -- 49% -- now disapprove, down from 60% when he left the White House.

And Germany still has learned nothing.
German imports of refined oil products from India soared in the first seven months of the year, official data showed Tuesday (12 September), much of which was likely made using crude oil from sanctions-hit Russia.
Germany bought 451 million euros’ ($480 million) worth of Indian petroleum products between January and July.
That was an increase of more than 1,100% on the €37 million spent over the same period a year earlier, national statistics agency Destatis said.
The 12-fold jump comes after India became a leading buyer of Russian crude in the wake of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

If all you can say about Joe Biden is that he's old, then you've already lost the argument.
You can't attack his policies, because they're putting people back to work.
You can't attack his handling of the economy, because unemployment is at record lows and inflation is falling back to manageable levels.
You can't attack him on family ties, because although his son is a coke overdose waiting to happen, there's zero evidence that the two ever did business together.
You can't attack him on civility or good conduct, because he stays off Twitter and treats people he meets with kindness and decency.
So you're left with age. He's old. That's all you've got. He's not even enfeebled, obese, or emotionally unstable. He's merely old.

Nope, R202, none of us will be voting for Hunter Biden for POTUS - not ever!
As for some link between the president and Hunter's drug-induced fuckery - Donald Dump has been trying and failing for years to find any link. The Republicans have tried and tried and failed and failed. There just isn't any there there.
As for President Biden being an excellent president, he is fucking fantastic. Are you a total fucking moron or a dumb cunt troll?
This is not all that he's done in two years but it's a good taste for you:
Here are 23 of Joe Biden’s greatest accomplishments as president of the United States in his first two years.
1. Passed the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure package to increase investment in the national network of bridges and roads, airports, public transport and national broadband internet, as well as waterways and energy systems.
2. Helped get more than 500 million life-saving COVID-19 vaccinations in the arms of Americans through the American Rescue Plan.
3. Stopped a 30-year streak of federal inaction on gun violence by signing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act that created enhanced background checks, closed the “boyfriend” loophole and provided funds for youth mental health.
4. Made a $369 billion investment in climate change, the largest in American history, through the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.
5. Ended the longest war in American history by pulling the troops out of Afghanistan.
6. Provided $10,000 to $20,000 in college debt relief to Americans with loans who make under $125,000 a year.
7. Cut child poverty in half through the American Rescue Plan.
8. Capped prescription drug prices at $2,000 per year for seniors on Medicare through the Inflation Reduction Act.
9. Passed the COVID-19 relief deal that provided payments of up to $1,400 to many struggling U.S. citizens while supporting renters and increasing unemployment benefits.
10. Achieved historically low unemployment rates after the pandemic caused them to skyrocket.
11. Imposed a 15% minimum corporate tax on some of the largest corporations in the country, ensuring that they pay their fair share, as part of the historic Inflation Reduction Act.
12. Recommitted America to the global fight against climate change by rejoining the Paris Agreement.
13. Strengthened the NATO alliance in support of Ukraine after the Russian invasion by endorsing the inclusion of world military powers Sweden and Finland.
14. Authorized the assassination of the Al Qaeda terrorist Ayman al-Zawahiri, who became head of the organization after the death of Osama bin Laden.
15. Gave Medicare the power to negotiate prescription drug prices through the Inflation Reduction Act while also reducing government health spending.
16. Held Vladimir Putin accountable for his invasion of Ukraine by imposing stiff economic sanctions.
17. Boosted the budget of the Internal Revenue Service by nearly $80 billion to reduce tax evasion and increase revenue.
18. Created more jobs in one year (6.6 million) than any other president in U.S. history.
19. Reduced healthcare premiums under the Affordable Care Act by $800 a year as part of the American Rescue Plan.
20. Signed the PACT Act to address service members’ exposure to burn pits and other toxins.
21. Signed the CHIPS and Science Act to strengthen American manufacturing and innovation.
22. Reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act through 2027.
23. Halted all federal executions after the previous administration reinstated them after a 17-year freeze.

True as far as it goes but greatly oversimplified. Doing good for themselves they wound up raising the standard of living for all us us.
While filling their own pockets the robber barons also brought organization, efficiency, and innovation to the economy that permitted America to leap forward into a super economy in a very short time. Carnegie in steel, Huntington in railroads, Melon in aluminum, Rockefeller in POL, Woolworth in consumer goods, Swift in nutrition, etc

And none of us are voting for Hunter Biden. He's not running for anything that I know of and nobody has evidence linking President Biden to shenanigans of any kind. That's not because they haven't tried. They've been trying forever and they've found no evidence.

R204, Biden and allies touting “accomplishments” is regarded by a large chunk of the electorate as being very tone deaf. People want a mea culpa from the president, to know that he “gets it”. If they see him thinking everything he has done is good, then they’ll know he won’t try to do things differently. He doesn’t consistently have an approval rating in the low forties for no reason.

The truth is, Biden was not the prime choice when this started, it was the blacks in the south that loved him for his previous work and spring boarded his campaign. He won 92% of the Black vote in 2020. They basically said, that's who we want if it's anyone else we are staying home and not voting. As 12% of the population is black, if they all did that it would guarantee a lost election. The rest of the Democrats went along because getting any Democrat in the White House was far better than the alternative.

Unemployment is the lowest it's been in 50 years.
Wages are up.
Manufacturing is up.
He got millions of vaccines in the arms of Americans.
He ended the Afghanistan War (thank god).
Consumer confidence is up.
Capped Insulin at $35 a month.
Cut a deal to get ten of the most commonly prescribed (and expensive) drugs to negotiate the prices down, just like all the other countries do.
He got the Infrastructure Bill passed and now our roads, bridges and critical infrastructure are being repaired. (Remember every time fuckface von clownstick promised Infrastructure Week? He ended up sitting in a semi at the White House and cosplaying a truckdriver blowing an airhorn while embroled in yet another scandal.)
INFLATION IS DOWN. With President Biden's leadership we have the best post-Covid recovery in the G-8. They all envy us as does the rest of the world.
Our Allies work with us and respect us again, it's not just the world's worst dictators who were the only "friends" we had with Donald Dump.
We're supporting Ukraine and providing crucial help to them in their fight against deadly invasion.
The president expanded benefits and services for our Veterans.
Stuck with the fight against Al Qaeda and killed their leading terrorists.
Issued crucial Executive Orders protecting a woman's reproductive rights when the Rethuglican Supremes took them away.
Historic student debt relief for middle and working class families. (what the Rethuglicans didn't steal)
Ended the stupid fucking war on weed.
The strongest environmental protections we've ever had in our history.
More Americans have health coverage than ever before and millions are paying less for it.
The president signed the most significant gun violence protection act in 30 years.

Nor can make himself understood. Who knows what point he's trying to make half the time? He certainly doesn’t seem to. His staff keeps having to walk things back, then he complains about being treated like a child.
He repeats himself, retelling entire anecdotes in the very same speech, seemingly unaware that he just finished the same story, to the same audience. Jesus fuck.
“Is Jackie here? Where's Jackie?” Not only was Rep Jackie Walorski recently deceased, but there was a memorial video for her at that very event. His press secy said, oh, she was on his mind. Hochul flip-flops on immigration: Border is 'too open'
Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) said Sunday the border is “too open” and that all the migrants coming to her state pose a “real problem.”
On CBS’s Face the Nation on Sunday, Hochul called for stricter border measures and worried about the number of illegal migrants who have been coming across the border and settling in New York
“I want them to have a limit on who can come across the border. It is too open right now," Hochul said. "People coming from all over the world are finding their way through, simply saying they need asylum. And the majority of them seem to be ending up in the streets of New York."
She continued by saying that it has become “a real problem for New York City” and something needs to change.
“We are one of the most diverse places on earth because of our welcoming nature, and it's in our DNA to welcome immigrants,” Hochul said. “But there has to be some limits in place, and Congress has to put more controls at the border.”
She is not the only New Yorker who has called for stricter border measures. Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams has also urged Congress and President Joe Biden to do something about the border, saying they can’t handle all the migrants coming into his city. “Let me tell you something, New Yorkers, never in my life have I had a problem that I did not see an ending to — I don’t see an ending to this,” the mayor said about illegal immigrants coming to New York City. “This issue will destroy New York City.”

Do you think the national economy is getting better, staying the same, or getting worse?
Would you say that the national economy is in a recession, or not?

Moving on from polls and the poll Troll, lets get back to the original question: “Why isn’t a mainstream Democrat challenging the president?
Because he's the best man for the job. He's already proven he can beat Trump in an election. And not just any election, he won when almost no president in modern history lost his second term except Bush. That's a much harder challenge and Biden wiped the floor with Trump.

They've been trying this shit every which way they can since 2008 and in earnest since 2016. They have always been afraid of Joe Biden. This time it seems worse than ever. They're not stupid, sort of. They know he's going to crush Trump in the general and possibly worse.

Been reading posts from other sites, MAGA is also very delusional, I mean more than normal. They think if RFK can run as an Independent, it will split the Democrats and Trump will win by a landslide. So they are pushing him as the next best thing.
The problem with their delusional theory is that I dont know a single Democrat personally or public figure that has said "yeah, I am giving up on Joe and going with a wackadoodle inexperienced conspiracy theorist" just because his name had Kennedy in it. That legacy is long gone. Even his own family does not support him.
If anything, it will split the Republican ticket with disaffected Republicans and Independants who cant bring themselves to vote for a Democrat but want something different besides Trump.

Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) is stepping down from his role in House Democratic leadership after floating a primary challenge to President Biden.
Phillips, a three-term moderate from the Minneapolis suburbs, began publicly floating a primary challenge against Biden in July and refused to rule out the prospect as recently as last week.

I'd be afraid if Biden was the driver and i was the passenger. And no, I wouldn't get in a car with Trump, because...farts!
by Anonymous | reply 395 | October 2, 2023 11:52 AM |
Trump would be more than just farts, you would have to listen to his long winded rants, grievances, old talking points from 2016, and how rich he is. Did you know he's rich? He's really really rich.
You call Uber, they only have two drivers, uncle Jo who's a little slow, does not remember the name of some of the streets or Trump with his farts, rants and conspiracy theories. The ride will be two hours long, you cant walk, you cant take a bus, you have to get in the car, now who do you pick?
I pick Biden.

R389 no, he's not the same man that ran three years ago. That’s what everyone, everyone, is saying, and the tiny DL cheering section plugs its ears and goes la la la, can't hear you.
Agree with r390, that RFK is a spoiler for the Rs, not the Ds.
Nevertheless, the US needs a competent leader and Ds need a strong candidate. Biden needs to withdraw.

The only point would be if the challenger differs significantly in their views.

It's the same with RFK. Repugs keep posting on Democratic leaning boards saying "I am switching to RFK" hoping enough Democrats agree with him that he splits the ticket. Except no Democrat public or private I know has said they would even remotely consider that. Most Democrats are pretty happy with how Biden turned out. It's all propaganda. It will actually have the opposite effect.

The more obvious reason is to set up an "I told you so" situation, since you are correct that the Democrats won't take corrective action no matter how bad things become.

Given that things have gotten much better during the Biden years—and because of his experience and canniness—this is rightwing fantasizing. They push this discourse harder the more hapless and disordered the Republicans in Congress get.

Did you see their shit-show today? Matty-matt-matt was forced to file his stupid motion to vacate or whatever they call it (fire his own damn Speaker).
The Democrats will save McCarthy's ass (again). Gaetz will lose and all the Republicans will be humiliated. Matty doesn't have the votes.
Someone send Minority Leader Jeffries and former Speaker Pelosi a case of ice cream. These Republican bitches have completely lost their shit. Plus they've got Fuckface von Clownstick jumping up and down screaming at them from the sidelines whenever he gets out of his trial.
Vote for these clowns? No fucking thank you. Let RFK peel loony voters off of Dump. He's crazy so that checks out with MAGATs, they think they're "sticking it to the Libs" by voting for him.
I wonder if Putin pays him directly or if it's more discreet than that?

It's disingenuous to blame Biden's poll numbers on ageism and cynicism. He's been polling low for many reasons including the economy and the border and the feeling that adults and registered voters are not satisfied with the job he's doing. The Gallup Poll, NBC News, Mommouth University, Wall Street Journal, CNN, Quinnipiac University . . .polled adults and registered voters on a variety of questions not based on age.

His exit from the leadership role comes amid growing scrutiny of the president’s age. At 80 years old, Biden is the oldest president in American history, and if reelected, he would be 86 when ending his second term.

And when - when you dive into the big questions around the economy, we know President Biden has been out there trying to make the case, unemployment is low, he's been talking about how inflation has been easing, but people aren't buying it. You covered some of the reasons why. Gas prices, food prices, grocery prices and the like. Right now, on the big picture in the economy, 74 percent of the country, that's about three-quarters of Americans who say the economy is either not so good or downright poor.
by Anonymous | reply 439 | October 3, 2023 11:40 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 440 | October 3, 2023 11:44 PM |
Meh. Dumb polls more than a year out from the election. They're dogshit.
We have the lowest unemployment in 50 years. Wages are up. Manufacturing is up. Consumer confidence is up. Gas prices are down. Inflation is down (the lowest of any country in the G-8). Our recovery post-Covid is the envy of every country in the world. Medicare can finally negotiate our drug prices. Insulin is already capped at $35 a month. Infrastructure was actually passed under President Biden and those programs are already rolling, our roads and bridges are being repaired. Our NATO allies and friends around the world respect and work with us again. The disgusting dictators Dump was so friendly with aren't welcome here anymore. The president protected the reproductive rights of women in this country after the Rethuglicans and the corrupt and idiotic Supremes let Americans down and tried to take us back to the 1950's.
I could go on but you're not actually interested in knowing how well the president is doing for Americans. You want Dump back sucking Putin's dick every day, destroying our country and the entire world. You want chaos and destruction and white supremacy. That's why everyone hates you, honey.

I like how the image preview of r441's link shows Harris as the face of the Biden-Harris White House. I still expect the GOP to increasingly use Kamala "Border Czar" Harris as the face of the administration.
by Anonymous | reply 442 | October 4, 2023 12:05 AM |
Yes, R442, it's so good to see VP Harris out there in front. When President Biden was VP, President Obama often put him front and center. It's good to see President Biden doing the same thing. Our VP's don't get enough attention or credit for the things that they do.
Unless you're just being a little bitch who can't stand seeing a powerful black woman as an example of American strength. If you're that kind of dumb cunt then I can see why you wouldn't like the President's choice here.
