Does anyone else watch Charlie Rose?
For years he had conversations with the leading figures of the world- politicians, authors, musicians, actors, historians, scientists.

Was Anne Bancroft the last great American actress? Her accent almost sounds English like they did in these black and White movies.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 8, 2023 3:58 PM |
R8 That is called the Mid-Atlantic accent.
I personally think she was the greatest tragic actress of the 20th Century. Many disagree, but Bancroft was one hell of an actress- The Miracle Worker, The Pumpkin Eater, The Slender Thread, The Elephant Man, Turning Point, and many many more.
Even in The Graduate she made Mrs. Robinson pathetic but understandable.

I enjoyed his interview at the inquest. He was quite candid that if you were to be included in his circle of friends you had to expect playful nudity on his part.

[quote] [Peter] O'Toole was interviewed at least three times by Charlie Rose on his eponymous talk show. In a 17 January 2007 interview, O'Toole stated that British actor Eric Porter had most influenced him, adding that the difference between actors of yesterday and today is that actors of his generation were trained for "theatre, theatre, theatre". He also believes that the challenge for the actor is "to use his imagination to link to his emotion" and that "good parts make good actors". However, in other venues (including the DVD commentary for Becket), O'Toole credited Donald Wolfit as being his most important mentor.

Do people still watch Charlie Rose after his "fall"?
by Anonymous | reply 23 | September 9, 2023 5:12 AM |
Always hated him. Dimwitted and talked over his guests.
Felt vindicated when all the winkie flashing stuff came out. Good riddance to the DUNDERHEAD.

I always felt he was intelligent and above the normal interview shows. I think he is innocent of the allegations.

by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 9, 2023 6:23 AM |
LOL, he had tons of accusers. You only think he's "innocent" because you like him. You sound like the Michael Jackson fans
by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 9, 2023 6:24 AM |
Or like Eric Porter or Sir Donald Wolfit fans.

My mother grew up with him and was a high school girlfriend. They went to the den ball together, and them they broke up.
When asked why she said that, “he was going places, and wanted to get out of North Carolina and I was happy where I was.”

Charlie does have an annoying habit of talking over his guests, but it adds to the atmosphere of intimate friends having a real conversation we as the audience get to listen in on. I appreciate the range of people he interviewed over the years-- his interview with Nora Ephron and Meryl Streep during the "Julie & Julia" days is one I will forever keep going back to, as long as the internet Gods keep it online. Also love his interview with the late Dowager Duchess of Devonshire, née Deborah Mitford.

I can't play the interviews that are on his website only. Possibly because I'm not in the United States. Perhaps I'll find a way around it.

A married friend of mine who had a drinking problem at the time met him socially and then got repeated calls from him suggesting they fuck. That was the word he used. No attempt at any other kind of interaction. She said she did not encourage him and at that time, maybe 30 years ago, he had a drinking problem himself, according to her account. Big disconnect between his public image and who he was one on one. I was deeply disappointed to hear this. No, she was not particularly attractive but she had a huge chest. She rejected his offer.

I, too R61, had a friend who had a similar encounter. She was a very well-known and very well liked Park Avenue widow who knew about everyone, and who threw spectacular parties. At one of them the drunk Rose cornered her in her bedroom and basically tried to rape her then and there. She easily escaped. Then, a few days later, instead of apologizing, he called to refer to their "intimate time" together and suggested they fuck.

I liked "Charlie Rose" until its host was revealed to be a predator. So I haven't watched it in at least that long, and couldn't possibly take that jackass seriously now.

The Most Influential Leader or Revolutionary of the 20th Century (1998)
Dan Rather, Walter Isaacson, Condoleezza Rice, Doris Kerns Goodwin, Irving Kristol, and Mario Cuomo.
Very Dick Cavett-esque

Terrible interviewer and he only got worse as time went on. Lots of hostility is evident, esp. in his later interviews He didn’t listen. I was not surprised that he was a predator. Tavus Smiley was similarly awful as an interviewer and also an obviously pretty hostile. TV was better without them.

I met him at the Starbucks on 3rd Avenue and East 39th St in midtown Manhattan just after his heart surgery. He had on a short sleeve madras shirt with the top 3 or 4 buttons unbuttoned, and you could see a fresh zipper scar on his chest. He was very pleasant and low key. A very attractive black female waited for him behind the wheel of a Suburban in a loading zone or bus lane with the engine running to avoid a ticket or being towed away by the City traffic authority. I remember he looked very pale and fragile. This was likely 2006.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | June 19, 2024 12:40 AM |
I'm sure he was an asshole even in 2006. He already was a lousy interviewer.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | June 20, 2024 12:23 AM |
I always found him and his extreme guest fawning rather ... oleaginous. Icky.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | June 20, 2024 12:30 AM |
I watched Charlie Rose religiously through the 2000s because he did long-form, commercial-free interviews with intelligent and accomplished people, but boy oh boy was he ever dumb about certain subjects. He knew literally nothing about classical music, for example. He fumbled around with novelists a lot, too. He usually asked extremely basic questions to actors, though he clicked with Peter O'Toole and certain others who were cut from his cloth, shall we say. I always felt he was most passionate about US politics--he loved having guys like Howard Fineman and Mark Halperin on, especially during presidential election years.
Nevertheless, he had everyone, and those interviews are a treasure trove, a true archive. And the laid-back style was so welcome; now we get Christiane Amanpour, whom I like, but she's always barking at her guests.

by Anonymous | reply 73 | June 20, 2024 1:41 AM |
Mark Halperin was a smug, overrated jerk. No wonder he clicked with him.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | June 20, 2024 1:53 AM |
He has the mannerisms of a concrete basement filled with herpes-infested shit water. But in a way, that made him a great interviewer. He was never chummy with hardly any of his subjects.
He was a very weak fit when CBS News made him co-anchor for their morning show. He brought that chilly, sad, depressing tone to your morning news. He reminds me of my 80+ year old psychiatrist I only went to once. Old, cold, and downright done with it all. Shocking he had enough emotion and wit to be some kind of sexual person, but it seems to be an all-too-common thing. Charlie Morose should've been his name.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | June 20, 2024 6:23 AM |
I liked the variety and intimacy of his interviews. I really don’t care about his sex pest stuff, and wish his show was still going.

One of the most cowardly responses to #MeToo was A.O. Scott's choice to denounce Woody Allen right after questions were being raised about "Charlie Rose" - a programme that Scott guest-hosted and frequently appeared on.
It's one thing to refuse to see Allen's films in 1992 when the allegations first surfaced? Or 2000 when he first started writing reviews for the paper? Or 2004 when he became chief critic? Or 2013 when Dylan Farrow first spoke publicly?
But to not even acknowledge Scott's relationship with Rose is so vile and cynical.
