I've been listening to Gilbert Gottfried's podcast and a couple of names that pop up when they talk about jerks are Danny Kaye, mentioned above and comedian Jack Carter who hated everybody. Kaye was known to pay attention to who got bigger laughs than he did during rehearsals of skits and then would step on those lines during the actual show.

And Cesar Romero used to pay rent boys to throw orange slices at his naked ass.

People's personalities--especially in the Arts--are not cafeterias in which you can pick and choose, taking this and leaving aside that. If they hadn't had what people disliked in them, they also wouldn't have had what people liked in them. Sure, there are nice people who are nice in all ways and talented to boot; but their personal "mechanism" has nothing to do with the personal mechanism of others.
