Rape is horrible but if he's getting "30 to life" for two rapes from twenty years ago, we need to up our standards for other crimes/criminals. Like what R19 is saying.
I mean Jared from Subway only got 15 years and he was diddling young kids. Which to me is way, way, way, way, way worse than adult rape

There is a difference between what Weinstein did and what the average rapist who wears a mask and puts a knife to the woman's neck did. Of course, they're both more about control and power than sex (although the coercion and power do provide sexual gratification).
You're looking at it purely through the prism of hot sex.

[quote] The defense unsuccessfully had sought to have their client’s time served concurrently.... if the defense’s argument had been successful that would have seen Masterson imprisoned for 15 years to life as the maximum
Looks like he got consecutive sentences, rather than concurrent sentences.
So, the jury found he raped 2 women. Each charge (one for each woman) would have subjected him to 15 years (sounds like).
If run concurrently (at the same time), that would make it 15 years.
Consecutive (15 years, then 15 more) would make it the 30 that we have here.
Not sure how a life sentence was a possible outcome. CA must have a law that attaches life sentences to sexual assaults.

Sentencing is all over the place because different states have different rules about sentencing. In addition, you can usually get a shorter sentence by agreeing to plead guilty. Going to trial is a huge gamble.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | September 7, 2023 10:01 PM |
He got the sentence violent rapists SHOULD get. Instead of saying it was too harsh, we should be expecting at least the same for murderers. It's the judges who give lenient sentences who are in the wrong, not this one who gave a fair sentence.
Someone who rapes while beating and smothering somebody or holding a gun to their head deserves what he got, at minimum.

Yes, it's normal for a defendant in a criminal case to not testify.
If you were accused of murdering someone and you claimed self-defense, then yes, it would be normal to testify.
One of his defense attorneys, Shawn Holley, said:
[quote] “Mr. Masterson did not commit the crimes for which he has been convicted, and we, and the appellate lawyers, the best and the brightest in the country, are confident that these convictions will be overturned.”
She sounds overconfident, IMO - "best and brightest"?

Taking the stand for the first time Oct. 24, Masterson accuser Christina B (aka Jane Doe 3) testified that she and the actor had been going out for more than four years, starting in 1997, when she woke up on one occasion in 2001 at his Hollywood Hills home (where she lived at the time) to find him having sex with her.
"I told him I didn't want to have sex, and he wouldn't stop," she said. He pinned her arms, she continued, making her feel "trapped...I was screaming at him to get off of me."
When she pulled on his hair, which was against a rule he had against touching his face or hair, he struck her on the left side of her face, the witness said, then spit on her and called her "white trash" as he got up.
About a year into their ultimately six-year relationship, Christina said, "He became very aggressive sexually...I remember coming back from Paris [in 1998] and I was really really tired and jet-lagged and sick and he wanted to have sex and I didn't. And it resulted in a fight where he dragged me by my hair along the floor. He called me fat and other insults. That's the first that I remember."
Whether she wanted to have sex when he did or not, she continued, "most of the time I let it happen. It would get to the point where if I made it an issue, he would ignore me for a day or two where I would go groveling to him."
And if she didn't apologize to him, she said, "there would be no communication."

I love Leah Remini. She's fearless. Here's her statement:
My statement on the sentencing of Scientologist Danny Masterson:
"Sitting in court today with the women who survived Danny Masterson's predation was a surreal experience. Over the past seven decades, former Scientologists have sadly become used to Scientology using its financial resources, religious protection, and relationships to snatch justice away from them.
For over two decades, Danny Masterson avoided accountability for his crimes. While Danny was the only one sentenced, his conviction and sentence are indictments against Scientology, its operatives, and its criminal leader, David Miscavige.
Scientology managed to cover up Danny's crimes with the help of its intelligence agency, the Office of Special Affairs, top "church" officials like Kirsten Caetano Pedersen and Julian Swartz, its network of media-hungry unethical attorneys, private investigators, agents, and civilian Scientologists who engaged in a conspiracy to cover up crimes of sexual violence.
I am relieved that this dangerous rapist will be off the streets and unable to violently assault and rape women with the help of Scientology, a multi-billion-dollar criminal organization with tax-exempt status.
Hearing the survivors read their victim impact statements aloud in court while the man who raped them and some of the very Scientologists who terrorized them over two decades were just a few feet away displayed a level of bravery that I am in awe of.
These women not only faced the living hell of being raped, having their rapes covered up by the very organization that promised to protect them, but they have also faced ruthless and criminal harassment by Scientology and its agents since they came forward to law enforcement.
I will always remind the public that in Scientology if you report another Scientologist to law enforcement, you are committing a high crime. The consequences of such a high crime are devastating: you will lose everything you've ever known, from your family to your friends to your job.
The women who survived Danny's predation fought tirelessly for justice. Their tenacity, strength, and courage have given hope to all victims of Scientology that justice is possible. For that, we will forever be grateful.
To the LAPD detectives, the LA District Attorney's office, Judge Olmedo, and the jury, we thank you for your fair and impartial approach to this case and trial."

She may have been financially dependent on him. She may have a codependent personality type. It's possible that, when he's sober, he can be a nice person. Maybe she wanted to be an actress. Maybe she wanted to be famous. Maybe abusive dynamics were what she was used to.
Personally, there are certain things I can't unsee. If I see someone being cruel or having a mean streak, I can't ignore it.

Totally understandable, R124! So sorry that happened to you.
I often think about the potentially dangerous situations my friends & I found ourselves in during college....partying at frat houses, or other non-frat parties. Any one of us could have found ourselves in a situation such as yours....and now I wonder about how many of my (female) friends did...but just never said anything/didn't want to admit it. 😢

R125 and R135, thank you. Truly.
I figured if I shared this on any other thread, I'd be dragged and told that I liked it.
I ended up moving to another part of the campus to get away from all the drama because word had gotten around. I can'tt imagine what i would be like in today's social media world. I would have killed myself.
I learned a great deal about people's tendency to judge and make fun of victims. It made it impossible to make friends. Fortunately, I was able to make one good friend when I moved to another part of the university.
Sometimes when the college reaches out asking for donations I feel like writing back to them as to what happened to me. But I don't think they'd care.
But I'm alive. I'm okay. I don't think I've ever really learned to trust.

Start sentencing rapists, child molesters, and those who produce/consume, CSA 15-30 years minimum, PER offense.
Men like this, and even women who molest kids as well, RUIN lives. So fuck them. Put them away for a long time.
You wanna hurt kids and/or adults because that’s how you get off? Then get ready to do hard time.

R159, it’s my first time commenting on this particular thread regarding D.M., however, surely I’m not the only person who harbors and expresses these sentiments.
Also, as an aside, I have LOTS of love for Mackenzie, who is an AMAZING human being, without one shitty or stuck up bone in her body. And I want to. E clear about something: most of the women in this family are NOT necessarily bad people.
I won’t get into specifics, however, these aren’t vain, heads in the clouds, Hollywood nepo-chicks.
It’s a shame BP ended up with this POS. That’s why I’m wishing her well, & sincerely hope she can get out, now that her abusive, POS husband is in prison.
D.M. deserves every second he had been sentenced to, & more.
He used to DJ at a Sunday Brunch hot spot in town, & the stories that came out of just those gigs alone, were awful.
He’s NOT a good dude, and I’m really upset, yet understand how and why Ashton Kutcher & Mika Kunis continue to vouch for this POS.
If you have never met someone like D.M. in the sense where you unfortunately get to witness their dark side behind closed doors? You just cannot fathom it.
I had never encountered the dark side of someone I completely loved and trusted, until after hitting my late 40s.
My mother KNOWINGLY brought in a sex offender, domestic violence abuser into our family, & hid it from us for YEARS.
I cannot even begin to express to any of you here the absolute mind fuck one goes through, when one totally loves and accepts someone onto their lives like a father, only to find out be’s nothing but a POS domestic violence abuser & rapist/sex offender.
Just like Bijou? My mother has carried water for his POS. I’ve basically lost my mother. It’s just as it happened to Bijou. She’s gone into some sort of cult like way of life, & I will NEVER, EVER get my mom back, and I now understand I do NOT want her back, anyhow.
👆🏽 That’s difficult to accept, yet I’m negotiating this right now, within myself, because I deserve to be free from all of her bullshit, & the bullshit of the man she chose to marry, while knowing how awful he is.
WTF is going on when women cannot get out?
It’s called generational abuse, and men like D.M., & my stepfather, seek out women who have never healed, in order to re-victimize them.
D.M. is a straight up, dangerous predator.
I hope his wife realizes who she married, & SOON.

THIS is why I’m still rooting for B.P.
I genuinely hope she can come to understand why she married the man she married, & why she’s in her specific situation, today.
It’s NOT her fault, however, she does need to unravel it all, & needs to CLEARLY understand that this wasn’t all some accident.
The road to recovery from this type of shit is painful, yet bearable. I hope she makes it through.

But everyone else: Topher Grace (who had the good sense to separate himself/was always on the outside of their little clique), Debra Jo Rupp, Kurtwood Smith, Don Stark....as well as the hundred or so other behind-the-camera crew members who worked on it.
It was a great & funny (and often very sweet) show for the first few seasons! Sadly, it will now probably be forever tainted by the STINK of Danny Masterson. Fuck you, Hyde!

Um....."practically all of America" did NOT watch That '70s Show, R176. You sound like a dumb twat that I saw on Twitter earlier today, calling him one of the "biggest tv stars" of the early aughts. A certain younger demographic might have been watching That '70s Show , but it never ranked higher that #49 (for the season) in Nielsen Ratings. The cast of That '70s Show were never household names (and certainly not Masterson) unlike, say: Ray Romano, Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Dempsey, the cast of FRIENDS, or even Deborah Messing (bwah!) If you're a very violent rapist, and you've repeated it with more than one woman, you're an enormous risk to murder.
Can the people who keep talking about sex and how he could have got plenty of it please stick their heads back up their asses? EVERYONE should know by now that rape is about wielding power and causing degradation, not about sex.
We get it, you don't understand that because you're not a rapist and you think about sex every ten seconds, but it is the case whether you can understand it or not. Women can all tell you that toxic men (who think of themselves as Alphas) are way more about wielding power than getting sex, whether they're actual rapists or just bullies who like to keep their employees on the back foot.

I wonder if a "donkey punch" delivered with enough force and at just the right angle can snap a neck.
The violence of the assaults and druggings seem to be factors in the severity of the sentence.
Re Bijou, if she has family outside Scientology and she's not too entangled with the Masrersons, who are hard-core clams, there's some hope. But it wouldn't surprise me if the cult has assigned a minder to her much like they did Katie Holmes to keep her in line. I wonder if these last three months of relative peace without him around have given her pause to think, at least, that life is so much more peaceful when he's not around. Finances are going to be a factor. IIRC, he put their multi-million dollar home up for sale between trials.

It would be helpful if you tagged the poster you were addressing, r196. I think most of us "capisce" it just fine.
One other thing about donkey-punching and its definitely not being consensual. In one of its extremest forms, the element of surprise is emphasized.
TRIGGER WARNING Of GRAPHIC ASSAULT FOLLOWS
A woman could be having a what she thought was plain old vanilla sex from behind, but shortly before her partner cums, he pulls out of her vagina, and rams his penis forcefully and painfully into her ass.
....then punches her in the back of the head. Danny thought that was so funny that he used it as his name. Given what we now know, it isn't hard to believe that he practiced this on many unsuspecting women for laughs. The humiliation could be so great that we will probably never hear from them.

Whatever, R215. Thirty years is ridiculous for rape. Some people on here have a mindset straight out of the Middle Ages. You, for example.
If the beatings caused some of the victims permanent physical harm, then I can understand a longer sentence. As far as I know, this didn't happen.
This is an example of a judge making a show of supporting women's rights and coming up with an very harsh, unfair sentence. Ten to fifteen years would have been enough.

R216 I have misgivings about it too. And it's 30 years to life. He'll be 77, assuming he gets out in 30 years.
Maybe after 15 years, there will be some kind of reassessment. But, other than appeals working, I don't see how he avoids the 30.
I kind of wondered if there might be a case against the retroactive changing of statutes of limitations winding its way through the court system. That whole thing always seemed a bit shakey to me.
by Anonymous | reply 223 | September 9, 2023 2:47 AM |
R184 that's disappointing after seeing how Ashton has been fighting against sex crimes, he goes and does that?! Yuck. That makes him look like a hypocrite.
by Anonymous | reply 224 | September 9, 2023 2:49 AM |
R220 it IS sad that the gay men here are so reactionary when it comes to the criminal justice system. For some reason, that nasty, ugly trait seems to be hard wired into Americans of all political persuasions, unfortunately.

by Anonymous | reply 226 | September 9, 2023 2:52 AM |
Figures Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis would support a rapist.
by Anonymous | reply 227 | September 9, 2023 2:54 AM |
R222, I'm just using the same tone that R215 and R218 is using. He obviously is respectful of anyone with a different point of view.
by Anonymous | reply 228 | September 9, 2023 2:54 AM |
R226 shouldn't be in public if he's going to shed tears over rape victims than write letters of support for a rapist... We have a problem with sex crimes being forgiven all the time due to this bs about "well they were a good guy in front of me". Just saying. We can agree to disagree.
by Anonymous | reply 229 | September 9, 2023 2:55 AM |
I suggest those defending him look up the details. It's disturbing. He thought he was above the law and treating these women as human beings. I bet no one here would be upset if he was out there gay bashing or commiting other hate crimes. Sexual violence at that level should be considered such. I wouldn't doubt it if he's VIOLENTLY raped other women this way but it wasn't reported or he did it out of the country. These types leave trails of victims. It's disturbing that a few comments here are acting like the sentence is hysteria and that rape isn't so bad, as if the violence wasn't severe.
by Anonymous | reply 230 | September 9, 2023 3:00 AM |
R229 No. It's their friend of 25 years, and they likely don't believe he's a rapist. Obviously, they are not objective about the situation, and clearly the judge knew this and disregarded their (and all) letters.
Their letter did not advocate his innocence, or that he be released. I don't have a problem with it. But now it's gonna be a huge scandal for them with all the shrieking and pearl clutching. Ugh.
by Anonymous | reply 231 | September 9, 2023 3:01 AM |
Let's hope those who advocate for a shorter sentence get anally raped and punched in the face at the same time.
by Anonymous | reply 232 | September 9, 2023 3:03 AM |
R220 I don't defend him at all. But I'm not comfortable with his being locked up till he's 77. The judge is basically saying "your life is over at age 47." Doesn't seem just to me. It's just not commiserate with the admittedly awful things he did.
by Anonymous | reply 233 | September 9, 2023 3:05 AM |
R231 yeah but they did add things like "he's not a known liar" which is the typical excuse we always hear. Idk feels gross. There's more than 2 victims as well. There were 4 women but they only took testimony from 3 (R233). I'm guessing there's others out there. What do you think is appropriate?

R234 How is "he's not a known liar" an excuse? I'm sure they were guided by Masterson's attorney as to what might have the possibility to impact the judge. Again, it obviously did not work.
by Anonymous | reply 239 | September 9, 2023 3:11 AM |
If 30 is too much, for multiple VIOLENT RAPES, against 4 women known of, that included drugging them and beating them, along with post rape intimidation tactics, like killing pets, again I ask, what is the appropriate sentence? I really want to know. Don't forget they are 15 yr sentences just not concurrent. So what do you all think he should've received?
by Anonymous | reply 240 | September 9, 2023 3:11 AM |
Ten years is enough. He'll really think twice about repeating his crimes when he gets out. If he does, throw the book at him.
Twenty five to thirty years is appropriate for murder.
by Anonymous | reply 241 | September 9, 2023 3:14 AM |
Uh no. Life in prison is appropriate for murder. Decades in prison is appropriate for a violent sexual crime.

by Anonymous | reply 243 | September 9, 2023 3:19 AM |
R241 for all the victims? Or per victim? And no regard for the drugging or other violence? This isn't your one time rape, where both parties were drinking and maybe people could argue he made a mistake. This was a habit with a pattern. The other acts along with the rapes, he was confronted about btw, didn't make him "learn a lesson", not even after paying out 400k.
by Anonymous | reply 244 | September 9, 2023 3:19 AM |

R240 He was only convicted of two, right? So you're saying people should be punished for crimes they haven't been convicted of? People get way too emotional over this stuff. Turns everyone into an authoritarian. Stop and think a little.
I don't know what he should've gotten, and I'm sure glad I wasn't charged with deciding his punishment. All I can tell you is I don't feel 30 years, basically the rest of his life, is a fair sentence.
Now, the judge followed the law. I believe Masterson did the crimes. He has to serve his time. I just think it's way too much time.

Thank you R246 I'm bowing out of the conversation. It's too upsetting. I read their testimonies. He was evil. There's multiple victims. There's violence and intimidation. He's a bad man. R241 no it's not being bloodthirsty. I'm fine with people that made mistakes getting chances. I'm fine with low sentences for non violent crimes. I can not say I'm fine with a serial rapist that felt above it all and no matter how many times he was confronted, even by police, he continued. You're a fool if you think these 4 we're the only ones too. He could've not raped those women. He made that decision. Don't dare put it on others that want justice for those women. I refuse to feel bad for anyone but the victims. If anything, Canada should learn something. They have plenty of instances of violent sex criminals getting out and offending again. Sometimes escalating to murder. Do you feel proud of that? There's a level of sex predators that can not be rehabilitated. It's been proven. Not pedos and not serial rapists.
by Anonymous | reply 251 | September 9, 2023 3:26 AM |

R248 Yeah, for some reason, we Americans see other people as not being actual humans. "Oh yeah throw him away for 30 years and forget him." The reality of this person waking up every single day for the rest of his long life in prison doesn't seem to get through.
I have this fight on here every time Leslie Van Houten comes up for parole. They want to keep a 76 year old lady locked up for something she did at age 19, under the influence of a possibly CIA trained mad man who used drugs to control her. Just petty and ugly.
by Anonymous | reply 258 | September 9, 2023 3:31 AM |
Well as long as his best years are behind him, then there's no need to take a violent rapist off the streets for several years.

I get your point, R258. But I would reply that every single case is different, and many people would say the cases of Leslie Van Houten and Danny Masterson, to pick only two examples, are EXTREMELY different. That's one of the reasons why judges have such great latitude when imposing sentences.
by Anonymous | reply 264 | September 9, 2023 3:36 AM |

Honestly, I’d like to hear someone who has been raped and who has also spent years in prison come forward and compare the two. I think such a person would be the best person to judge how many years in prison is proportional to the crime of rape.
I have questions about how many years are appropriate since this happened years ago and he has a daughter who. The victims are not the only stakeholders, his family are also stakeholders.

Following on r277, one very handy style element pertains to multi-paragraph quotations. This convention requires an open-quote mark at the beginning of each successive paragraph (but no close-quote mark until the final para).
This signals to the reader that the quotation is ongoing, and saves him or her from having to search for the single little close-quotation mark several paragraphs away.
Or you can indent the whole quotation, which serves the same purpose.
Anyway, appreciate the quote from Rimini, thanks, r115.

Sheesh, R271! You cannot fathom that this man is INDEED, a violent rapist when alone with the women he raped, can you?
He drugged them. He punched them. He sodomized them violently. He held a gun to the head of another. He smothered them with pillows until they blacked out. He dragged them around the house as they were unconscious. He stuck one in the hot tip so that the drugs would kick in faster and more efficiently, which can EASILY kill anyone of any sex, weight, height or age. He threatened their lives. He had his cohorts following his victims. Hr had his cohorts terrorize them and intimidate them regularly. He had his cohorts poison & kill their dogs/pets. He held one victim hostage in her own home for several days while repeatedly drugging & raping her. He strangled some of them until they lost consciousness. It was so bad, his attorneys advised him to pay one victim $400,000.00.
You & others here honestly believe 30 years is too much for this violent sex offender?
No one should care more about planning for/starting/having a family than he should have.
He fucked himself & his own family over by being a violent rapist who was a repeat offender.
Wanna discuss appropriate or unfair punishment, and sentencing?
Lemme tell ya what: Had he been a poor black man, not in the COS, chances are he would have been sentenced to life behind bars, without any possibility of parole, even if the poor black man was completely innocent & wrongly accused.
You wanna discuss unfair, wrongful sentencing? Why don’t you start by researching the HUNDREDS OF BLACK MEN EHO HAVE BEEN WRONGLY ACCUSED AND HAVE SERVED LIFE BEHIND BARS OR HAVE BEEN UNJUSTLY PUT TO DEATH???
I’m sorry, but you & all of these rape apologists on this thread can go fuck right off.
by Anonymous | reply 292 | September 9, 2023 4:03 PM |
R292, stop calling me a rape apologist.
If he had been tried and convicted closer to the time the events happened, I don’t particularly think 30 years is too long. However, these rapes happened 20 years ago, and circumstances have changed since then — he’s older, less likely to offend again, and he has a daughter who will grow,up,without a father (although it can be argued she’s better off without him).. I don’t think he should get off scot free, but I’m skeptical that 30 years serves any purpose at this point. There are other remedies. There is such thing as a Goldilocks punishment (too lenient, too severe, just right).
For the record, Rodney Reed is not an innocent black man sitting in prison for raping and killing Stacy Stites. And Bill Cosby got out of prison.

R293, he committed violent rapes repeatedly.
Why does it matter that it happened 20 plus years ago?
BTK, who was a serial killer, as well as the Golden State serial rapist/serial killer, were both apprehended YEARS after they committed their crimes.
Should they too, get a more lenient sentence because time has passed since their last offense?
Danny Masterson is NOT a good person.
Have you ever been bamboozled by a horrible human being, who happens to be absolutely wonderful to you or others, yet behind closed doors, is someone and something that is absolutely in unbelievable and incomprehensible to you or others, R293?
Sadly, I have, and it pretty much broke me.
I couldn’t believe someone I absolutely loved, respected & genuinely trusted as if though he were my very own father, was REPEATEDLY physically/mentally/emotionally abusing my mother for YEARS, behind closed doors.
Guess what? He was. And not only did he harm her, as he also harmed every single woman he had been married to, before my own mom, which by the way, hid his past and multiple marriages from me and our family, other than the one to his first wife, whom we all thought had been his only previous marriage.
I can spend days telling you or anyone, really, how screwed up this man was/is, & I can honestly tell you that I or any of us in my family had a single clue what kind of man my mother brought into our family.
Let’s hypothetically propose that my mother’s current husband hasn’t beaten her in 20 years… what exactly does that do?
My mom is a complete shell of a human being now. Every time she ended up or ends up hospitalized, I wonder if the reason given for the hospitalization is/was truthful.
This man runs around acting like the most WONDERFUL person, and guess what? He IS WONDERFUL to MANY people, as long as they don’t live with him, and oppose him regarding anything, whatsoever, behind closed doors.
Masterson profoundly hurt others, R293. I am able to objectively understand your POV, however, he absolutely, truly hurt these women & possibly more, & he deserves his sentence, even if indicted/charged/sentenced 20 plus years later.
He treated these women like garbage, R293. He had ZERO regard for their comfort, health, safety, mental health, physical well being, their personhood, or even their lives and the PTSD one grapples with when victimized by someone like himself.
He didn’t give one flying fuck about his victims, R293. He really, really didn’t, which is why I find his sentence fair, as I have no doubt that at one time, he actually believed he’d gotten away with his crimes.
He’s a REALLY bad man, R293. He really, TRULY is, and I hope that someday, on some level, you can view this in its entirety and reality, and eventually understand that bad people like this are sociopaths who fool MANY, and that his lengthy incarceration is just, because I can promise you that speaking from personal experience?

Some of you people are reading WAY too much into that clip of DM with Conan. First of all, DM's comment was not bout raping or even having sex with someone, it was just a passing vulgarity about "do you wanna touch my balls," and it seemed clear to me that Conan was offhandedly joking when he said "You're going to get caught for that." Maybe I'm naive, but if Conan had actually heard that DM was a rapist or sexual predator, I REALLY don't think he would have made an offhand joke about it on national TV.

Kutcher — said his friend, whom he considers a “brother,” is a “role model," “extraordinarily honest” and “nothing but a positive influence” on him. Kutcher said that in the 25 years they’ve known each other, Masterson has never lied to him, and he credited Masterson for helping him avoid drugs in Hollywood as a young star".-YAHOO Entertainment

If I were Ashton and Mila I would tell everyone whinging about the letters (including R327) to go fuck themselves. They wrote a letter attesting to what they know about their friend. Letters that made no difference. Outrage culture is tiresome. Danny is a criminal, and he got the sentence he deserved. All Ashton and Milla did was write letters. It isn't like they held the women down while Danny raped them.
by Anonymous | reply 329 | September 9, 2023 10:43 PM |
R329, but writing a letter stating that Danny Masterson had been a well-behaved friend and a good colleague in a work environment when he was reliably accused of several violent rapes is equivalent to someone having written a letter stating, for example, that Bill Cosby was nice to old ladies on the street. First of all, one thing has NOTHING to do with the other, and also, it's offensive to stress someone's good points when they're reliably accused of doing something so awful.

by Anonymous | reply 336 | September 9, 2023 11:29 PM |
Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher showed INCREDIBLY poor judgement, at best, writing those letters. It’s not like Masterson was being tried over a misdemeanour traffic violation or something. These weren’t “mistakes” or indiscretions of youth. The kind of violence he perpetrated against these women puts him in the very twisted criminal category. And obviously the victims were found to be credible in a court of law.
I think this will haunt them for a long time. And rightly so.

So I read the 3 testimonies. One woman was at a club all night and went back to his house with some friends - at which time she had her one and only drink for the night.
Another one said she was over at his place with 20-30 other people and she had a drink in the hot tub and she got woozy and threw up and that he ended up putting her in a shower and washing her breasts. Ummm - to get the VOMIT off?
The only evidence they had was their testimonies - no physical or toxicology evidence. And all 3 met and spoke with each other before pressing charges.
One of the accusers was an ex-girlfriend.
This doesn't sound so airtight to me. And to give him 30 years?

Okay, I don't get this at all. No matter how much you like someone, would you want it on public record that you tried to help a rapist get leniency? Wouldn't you have felt confused, angry, depressed and even fooled/manipulated after finding out your beloved brother-in-law actually raped and tortured several women?
[quote]Billy Baldwin Says He Doesn’t Know Anyone ‘More Beloved Than Danny Masterson’ in Letter to Judge
[quote]Baldwin, whose wife Chynna Phillips is sister to Masterson's wife Bijou Phillips, was one of several celebrities to write a letter in his support to the judge ahead of Thursday's sentencing
[quote]Billy Baldwin was one of several friends of Danny Masterson to write a letter in his support ahead of Thursday's sentencing for two rape convictions.
[quote]The seasoned actor, whose wife Chynna Phillips is sister to Masterson's wife Bijou Phillips, explained he'd known his sister-in-law since she was 10 and considers himself a "father figure" to her, per a letter to Judge Charlaine Olmedo that was obtained by The Messenger. (Former co-stars including Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis as well as first responders also wrote letters on Masterson's behalf.)
[quote]"I know that Danny has been convicted of a very serious crime and is facing a lengthy prison sentence," added Baldwin, in part. "The purpose of this letter is to inform you about the Danny Masterson that I know. Danny the man, the friend, colleague, family member, husband, and father. Things that were not discussed in court but I think are vitally important for you to know."
[quote]In his 35 years as an actor, Billy wrote that he "can say unequivocally that I have never known anyone that is more beloved than Danny Masterson."
[quote]"Never in my entire life have I had more people refer to someone as 'family,' 'my brother' and 'best friend' than Danny," he added. "Many of them have told me that he was there for them in their 'greatest hour of need' and 'the darkest hour of their life.'"
[quote]He praised Masterson for "the enormous role" he played in helping his single mother raise his younger (now-adult) siblings, which he "continues to serve in that capacity to this day."
[quote]Baldwin said Masterson was also there for him when his son Vance was diagnosed with cancer at 16, and for Bijou when she need a life-saving kidney transplant.
[quote]Since he has been incarcerated, I have heard him on the phone with his daughter helping her with her math homework while she tries to navigate through this devastating life-changing event at only nine years old," he wrote.
[quote]Baldwin concluded, "I have truly never met a person that was a more caring, dedicated, trustworthy, and loyal family member and friend. I pray to God that you will consider the entirety of who Danny is when considering his sentence."

Yep, R350. I think it was an E: True Hollywood Story about T7S...in which someone said Topher was aloof & kind of removed from the rest of the (younger) cast. All because he didn't hang out with them "off the clock", going to clubs & parties -- which made him *sound* like he was a jerk/ass/difficult (at the time).
Which he wasn't. He just did his "work" and went home.
All this bullshit about being Danny anti-drugs/the cast not being into drugs.....
Whether or not they partook of (hard) drugs ...they liked to drink plenty! On Friday nights, after the audience-tapings, the booze flowed freely on the Radford lot. They had poker parties in their dressing rooms, and then spilled out (in their cars) onto the streets of Studio City at 2-3 am. Meanwhile, Topher was outta there within a half-hour of the final "cut!"
by Anonymous | reply 364 | September 10, 2023 4:56 AM |
R357 Well maybe my statement was a little hyperbolic… Look, it’s obvious that all murder is wrong, just like all rape is wrong. But there are degrees of severity in both crimes. Not all murders are violent. Certainly not all of them are premeditated. And some deaths come about as a result of someone flying into a rage and hitting someone and that person dies. More tragic than ghastly. And yes I’m aware that these cases could count more as manslaughter. But still.
When I read the victims statements I truly felt sick to my stomach. I thought only someone seething with hatred of women and a darkly violent soul could do this to another human being. Someone who gets off on the destruction of another person. The drugging. The yelling. The belittling. The choking. The punching. The dragging. The violent sodomizing. The forced confinement. The covering up. The intimidation. Vile and dark stuff.
Many of us are reacting emotionally to this case. 30 years is a stiff sentence. But think of all the rape cases, famous or otherwise, where the perp gets 1 year, or 2 years, or time off for good behaviour. Many of us feel that rape convictions should come with much harsher sentences than the precedents have dictated. I just can’t cry in my beer over Danny Masterson.
by Anonymous | reply 365 | September 10, 2023 5:20 AM |
R365 - but there is no evidence, physical or otherwise, for their statements.
I read their statements - and they were, frankly, a little unbelievable. One victim is out clubbing all night completely sober comes back with SEVERAL people also there, has one drink FINALLY at his house, then wakes up to him having sex with her? She only had one drink the whole night - and only at his place?
The other woman was there with 20-30 other people with the whole vomiting thing. None of her friends went to check on her? Do you think it's something he would do would 20-30 other people in the house?
The 3rd woman was a former girlfriend and said he raped her when she came home from Paris and was tired and he wanted to have sex because he hadn't seen her in so long and she was too tired.
None of these stories - the majority by Scientologists - sound extremely believable. Particularly because all the victims spoke with each other before pressing charges.
Did no one else in his circle hear or see any bad behavior?
Where is all of this other stuff you talk about - the choking, punching, dragging, etc? Was that his former struggling actress girlfriend who waited YEARS to talk about it?
And yes - the length of time DOES matter in coming forward when supposedly it's so serious.
To send someone away for 30 years PURELY ON TESTIMONY is insane.

It wouldn't be the first time the room was wrong, R394. So you're saying that Ashton and Mila knew Masterson was a violent rapist but they were incredibly stupid enough to stick up for him publicly anyways. They couldn't have just kept quiet. Just because someone has an odd, off-putting personality and doesn't come off well in interviews and makes jokes in poor taste that fall flat, doesn't make them a major criminal. They heard the allegations but did not want to believe them because they could not imagine him doing something like that.

Isn't amazing that Scientology is perfectly OK with alcohol but antidepressants and other psychiatric meds (or even any mental health treatment) is forbidden? I'm fascinated by r175's post. I've only seen the report of being in a medical unit for alcohol detox on the Medium website. Longtime, maintenance alcoholics can appear to be sober when they're really not. It helps explain his sinister edge if he was always under the influence.
David Miscavige is also reportedly an alcoholic. One of the people who left the cult (can't recall the name) said that every evening he'd break out the scotch. On some occasions, he'd gather some of his lieutenants and they'd read Tom Cruise's auditing files. I kid you not. Can you imagine being a fly in the wall?

In my jurisdiction, some of those support letters would be sealed (unavailable to the public). There's a pre-sentencing report that is written / compiled by a court employee - that report is sealed. If a defendant submits letters to the court employee who does the report, then the letters are sealed, along with the report.
The report (and any enclosed letters) are available to the judge, the prosecutor, and the defendant (but not the public).
I'm guessing Kunis / Ashton sent their letter directly to the judge, who then made it available to the public.

What Kutcher & Kunis fail to understand is that some seemingly good people can do horrible things in secret. That does not mean the good things they've done should clear the score when they do bad things.
I wonder if they would have written the same letters of support if they had personally witnessed Masterson raping women? I seriously doubt it. There is no scenario where someone's good deeds, no matter how magnanimous, can conceivably work in their favor when they've been convicted of such heinous crimes.

Christina Ricci weighs in:
[quote] So sometimes people we loved and admired do horrible things. They might not do these things to us and we only know who they were to us but that doesn’t mean they didn’t do the horrible things and to discredit the abused is a crime
[quote] People we know as ‘awesome guys’ can be predators and abusers. It’s tough to accept but we have to. If we say we support victims – women, children, men, boys – then we must be able to take this stance.

R444 - that's the question. No physical evidence, toxicology evidence (drugging), etc.
From all we know, it was just testimony. And in a lot of jurisdictions, that's all that is needed.
For those not in the courtroom, it seems like it's one person's account versus the other - which seems like a very dangerous and low bar to convict.
The stories provided by the victims just seem off - particularly the ex-girlfriend. 30 years for she said/he said.

I keep advising people to head over to Tony Ortega's Underground Bunker for a full history of all the women and their cases, from the inception and through both trials. I realize, though, that extensive years-long research empirical evidence compounded by multiple independent observations is too much for some to tolerate, as MAGAts have amply demonstrated. *re Cult of Scientology, look up recent Florida Attorney General, Pam Bondi and her ties to the cult's Clearwater, FL HQ. She took $$$ from a cult that enslaves.

If the systemic misogynist, clams, and their apologists do not believe Tony Ortega's carefully documented history of cult malfeasance and their continued, decades-long interruption with LAPD and LA County Sheriff 's office, Mike Rinder's website should offer more challenges to you. “Dear Ashton, I know the secrets your ‘role model’ keeps for you. Ones that would end you. Did you forget I was there? You were on speaker phone that night you called Danny on February 21, 2001. I hear everything. I heard the plan. In my opinion, you’re just as sick as your ‘mentor.'”
“Dear Mila, I pray you begin to process what you experienced as a child on that set. Your old interviews are very telling. ( I encourage everyone to wash them and decide for yourself what you hear and see. Do so before they get scrubbed from the internet.) I also know what happened in Toronto and after. Question, if that’s what you view as a normal relationship with a ‘big brother figure’ I feel very sad for you, and I hope you consider getting into therapy. Wilmer also dated Mandy Moore when she was 16-17 (he was four years her senior), and began dating Lindsey Lohan when she was 17 (he was six years her senior).
During an interview with Howard Stern some years later, he bragged that he took Mandy's virginity -- and said that the "sex with Mandy was good, but it wasn't like warm apple pie." Which Mandy said was lie, "utterly tacky", and called him out on it. Eventually, Wilmer asked the Howard Stern Show to remove that interview.

by Anonymous | reply 505 | September 19, 2023 5:40 AM |
R502, the Church of Scientology seems to have followed the Catholic Church's playbook by not reporting the rapes, treating the victims (who were church members) as the guilty parties, and probably helping to threaten and bully victims. But, as the Catholic Church's experience shows, there's only so much any one organization can to do to help it's members when they are accused of serious crimes.

I saw an interesting interview with a former prisoner who explains how that all works, and the type of people Danny will be incarcerated with even in a "Special Needs Yard" (or "protective custody"). Obviously, there's no money transferred on the inside -- it takes place on the outside, between family members (called "street to street").
It's a very long interview, but I think the main gist of what I'm referring to is covered in the first 10-12 minutes.

Chynna (she, Bijou, & Mackenzie have same father, 3 different mothers) told a really sad story and even though she talks about Jesus way too much, I feel bad for her.
She went with brother Tamerlane (Bijou's full brother, I think) to visit Dad (Papa John Phillips who had sex w/his own daughter, Mackenzie). Michelle (mom) told Chynna be careful, blah blah blah. John ends up basically kidnapping Tamerlane and taking him to a foreign country.
Even though Michelle's not Tamerlane's mother, she had custody of him.
Anyway, that's a sad story and what a heavy burden for a child (Chynna) to bear: to be tasked with not letting John kidnap your brother.

She's getting all the assets out of his name before the law suits.

She can get half, but if he “gives” her more than that in a divorce settlement, Danny’s creditors can challenge it as a fraudulent conveyance.

R292 take your strawman and shove it ALL THE WAY up your ass. I don't queation that he's a rapist who deserves to be punished. But I think 30 years is too much.

Scientology probably gets whatever money he has left if he's killed in prison.

R529, this was not discretionary. This was the mandatory sentence under California law. Elected representatives voted for it.

I don't believe for one second that he *only* "raped 2 women 20 years ago."

Sadly for you, your opinion isn't the one that matters.
