I can't be alone in noticing this. Is it supposed to be funny? I see it all the time on here, as a reply to someone who says lol or LOL. Perhaps it has some amusing explanation but I have never understood why posters (assuming there's more than one, which may be overly generous) use it.
What's "LoL! :)" supposed to mean?
by Anonymous | reply 71 | September 22, 2023 7:35 PM |
Man, Muriel must have posts still coming up from the early 2000s. It means Lots of Love! Or die in a grease fire.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | September 2, 2023 10:37 AM |
RACI$T LE$BIAN TROLL ALERT!
by Anonymous | reply 2 | September 2, 2023 10:39 AM |
don't listen to r1! It means Little old Ladies.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 2, 2023 10:42 AM |
R1, you didn't read beyond the thread title, did you? Fool.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 2, 2023 10:53 AM |
I was only being pointless OP! Calm yo titties.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | September 2, 2023 11:02 AM |
I see it all the time on here
No, you don't.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | September 2, 2023 11:25 AM |
Serious answer: the “lol!” reply to a “lol!” is designed to throw shade on the original “lol!”er for using such an infantile interjection. It’s even more deliciously snarky when the original “lol!”er has no idea they’re being ridiculed.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 2, 2023 11:27 AM |
I thought it meant "Laugh Out Loud"!! It's not???
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 2, 2023 11:32 AM |
Do you know what "STFU" means, OP?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 2, 2023 11:36 AM |
Oh, all right then, R6. Silly twat.
Yes, that's about what I thought, R8, though I depart from you as to whether or not it's amusing.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 2, 2023 11:37 AM |
I meant to agree in part with R7, not R8.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 2, 2023 11:38 AM |
It means Lots of Lard and it came about cuz of yo mama.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 2, 2023 12:37 PM |
Is that so? Mother's no sylph, it's true.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 2, 2023 12:41 PM |
Only on the Datalounge, kids. Only on the Datalounge.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 2, 2023 12:45 PM |
It means Lativa over Lakisha
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 2, 2023 12:59 PM |
It's mocking idiotic people who type "lol." Generally, people over the age of 12 don't use "lol."
by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 2, 2023 1:06 PM |
Generally, they do. You are probably one of those rickety ild things who is offended by "no problem".
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 2, 2023 1:08 PM |
OLD!
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 2, 2023 1:08 PM |
LOLLLLLLL
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 2, 2023 1:15 PM |
Where posters are older than Cindy Adams. And dirt.
And think one person posts Mrs. Patsy Ramsey, or "I was molested."
by Anonymous | reply 20 | September 2, 2023 1:16 PM |
R20, I would never claim that only one person is responsible for the Mrs. Patsy Ramsey or Lorna Luft posts. Those have been adopted by many users as they are often amusing. "LoL! :)" is witless.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | September 2, 2023 1:25 PM |
On the Days of our Lives threads (DOOL) it’s become a thing over the years to write “LOOL!” instead of “lol”.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | September 2, 2023 4:15 PM |
Is lolz okay, though?
by Anonymous | reply 23 | September 2, 2023 4:19 PM |
An LOL! :) response to an original LOL post is essentially an "OK Boomer" response to the antiquated use of LOL.
All the cool kids just use emoji's now, and have been for years.
Typing LOL defines you as an oldster with limited tech skills.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | September 2, 2023 4:22 PM |
We don’t use emojis on DL!
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 2, 2023 4:27 PM |
“An” LOL! :)
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 2, 2023 4:28 PM |
It's about the same level of wit, R26 (i.e. low). Another poster said recently that some DLers only use the unfunnier recurring jokes as a way of "staying in the game" but some of these running jokes need to be taken off life support. Let me repeat that I am NOT coming for your Lorna Luft and Patsy Ramsey posts.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 2, 2023 4:32 PM |
I thought it meant something said was funny. I use it when I think something someone said is funny. How has this become offensive?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 2, 2023 4:36 PM |
Seriously, R28, read my post and not just my thread title. This is about a very particular way of [italic]writing[/italic] LOL/lol, which is capital L, lower-case o, capital L, exclamation mark, smiley face. This way of writing it is often posted as a response to someone who has written LOL or lol.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 2, 2023 4:42 PM |
Any lol derivation or emojis are used by deliciously snarky frauen.

by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 2, 2023 5:52 PM |
I use lol judiciously. I am comfortable with my usage and since I am Gen X , I am fine if it reveals that im old, out of touch, whatever.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 2, 2023 7:20 PM |
AFAIK in the US and in the UK they don’t awys sp out words like cdc or fda or gop or ncaa they often instead do lol.
It’s a guess anyway
TIA
by Anonymous | reply 34 | September 2, 2023 7:28 PM |
Ok R29 thank you.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 2, 2023 7:36 PM |
Sometimes a colon and an opening parenthesis are just a colon and an opening parenthesis.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | September 2, 2023 7:39 PM |
I use lol in only one instance- when something someone else posted made me laugh.
I NEVER use it when referring to what I write.
And I ain't gonna stop that.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | September 2, 2023 7:52 PM |
Stop that!
by Anonymous | reply 38 | September 2, 2023 8:11 PM |
LIZA over LORNA
by Anonymous | reply 39 | September 2, 2023 8:23 PM |
What about "haha"? That's what us old folks use.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | September 2, 2023 8:25 PM |
r40, some used to say 'Hahaha! I'll say!'
by Anonymous | reply 41 | September 2, 2023 8:51 PM |
J. Lo is short for Jennifer Lopez.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | September 2, 2023 9:13 PM |
We've had a lot of prisspot threads lately with people whining about the way someone else makes a post.
Not the content of the post, but how they post it, the wording.....I mean, really.
Talk about nellie prisspottery......
by Anonymous | reply 43 | September 2, 2023 9:24 PM |
Talk about nellie prisspottery......
I always spelled "nelly" with a Y, unless it's a woman's name.

Where could one acquire this pottery?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | September 2, 2023 9:31 PM |
R43, I take it that you're talking about the poster/s who use/s "LoL! :)". Because they only ever do so as a response to others' use of LOL. That's the point of this thread. I'm glad that you agree with me.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | September 2, 2023 9:31 PM |
Means ur old. Gen Z uses Jbol (just burst out laughing) now.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | September 2, 2023 9:58 PM |
Does Gen Z also use "ur" for "your"?

It actually means Lesbians of Laurasia, and it refers to women attracted to other women who lived on the ancient continent of Laurasia approximately 250 million years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | September 4, 2023 12:16 AM |
LoL!
by Anonymous | reply 55 | September 4, 2023 12:32 AM |
I will continue to use lol in response to something that made me chuckle, and to let the poster know I thought their post was clever/funny. Mock away.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | September 4, 2023 12:33 AM |
LoL! ; )
by Anonymous | reply 57 | September 4, 2023 12:33 AM |
I only use it now when I actually chuckle a little bit while reading a post.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | September 4, 2023 2:09 AM |

But that’s different than lol which indicates a light chuckle.
Who knew this could be so technical for some of us.

by Anonymous | reply 65 | September 17, 2023 12:22 PM |
As already noted, it is overused and should be reserved for something especially funny not just a grinner.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | September 17, 2023 12:25 PM |
Boomers are still trying to figure out “lol” huh? Call up AOL customer service and ask.
