What's "LoL! :)" supposed to mean?

I can't be alone in noticing this. Is it supposed to be funny? I see it all the time on here, as a reply to someone who says lol or LOL. Perhaps it has some amusing explanation but I have never understood why posters (assuming there's more than one, which may be overly generous) use it.

by Anonymousreply 104June 23, 2024 8:55 PM

Man, Muriel must have posts still coming up from the early 2000s. It means Lots of Love! Or die in a grease fire.

by Anonymousreply 1September 2, 2023 10:37 AM

by Anonymousreply 2September 2, 2023 10:39 AM

don't listen to r1! It means Little old Ladies.

by Anonymousreply 3September 2, 2023 10:42 AM

R1, you didn't read beyond the thread title, did you? Fool.

by Anonymousreply 4September 2, 2023 10:53 AM

I was only being pointless OP! Calm yo titties.

by Anonymousreply 5September 2, 2023 11:02 AM
I see it all the time on here

No, you don't.

by Anonymousreply 6September 2, 2023 11:25 AM

Serious answer: the “lol!” reply to a “lol!” is designed to throw shade on the original “lol!”er for using such an infantile interjection. It’s even more deliciously snarky when the original “lol!”er has no idea they’re being ridiculed.

by Anonymousreply 7September 2, 2023 11:27 AM

I thought it meant "Laugh Out Loud"!! It's not???

by Anonymousreply 8September 2, 2023 11:32 AM

Do you know what "STFU" means, OP?

by Anonymousreply 9September 2, 2023 11:36 AM

Oh, all right then, R6. Silly twat.

Yes, that's about what I thought, R8, though I depart from you as to whether or not it's amusing.

by Anonymousreply 10September 2, 2023 11:37 AM

I meant to agree in part with R7, not R8.

by Anonymousreply 11September 2, 2023 11:38 AM

It means Lots of Lard and it came about cuz of yo mama.

by Anonymousreply 12September 2, 2023 12:37 PM

Is that so? Mother's no sylph, it's true.

by Anonymousreply 13September 2, 2023 12:41 PM

Only on the Datalounge, kids. Only on the Datalounge.

by Anonymousreply 14September 2, 2023 12:45 PM

It means Lativa over Lakisha

by Anonymousreply 15September 2, 2023 12:59 PM

It's mocking idiotic people who type "lol." Generally, people over the age of 12 don't use "lol."

by Anonymousreply 16September 2, 2023 1:06 PM

Generally, they do. You are probably one of those rickety ild things who is offended by "no problem".

by Anonymousreply 17September 2, 2023 1:08 PM

by Anonymousreply 19September 2, 2023 1:15 PM
Where posters are older than Cindy Adams. And dirt.

And think one person posts Mrs. Patsy Ramsey, or "I was molested."

by Anonymousreply 20September 2, 2023 1:16 PM

R20, I would never claim that only one person is responsible for the Mrs. Patsy Ramsey or Lorna Luft posts. Those have been adopted by many users as they are often amusing. "LoL! :)" is witless.

by Anonymousreply 21September 2, 2023 1:25 PM

On the Days of our Lives threads (DOOL) it’s become a thing over the years to write “LOOL!” instead of “lol”.

by Anonymousreply 22September 2, 2023 4:15 PM

Is lolz okay, though?

by Anonymousreply 23September 2, 2023 4:19 PM

An LOL! :) response to an original LOL post is essentially an "OK Boomer" response to the antiquated use of LOL.

All the cool kids just use emoji's now, and have been for years.

Typing LOL defines you as an oldster with limited tech skills.

by Anonymousreply 24September 2, 2023 4:22 PM

We don’t use emojis on DL!

by Anonymousreply 25September 2, 2023 4:27 PM

“An” LOL! :)

by Anonymousreply 26September 2, 2023 4:28 PM

It's about the same level of wit, R26 (i.e. low). Another poster said recently that some DLers only use the unfunnier recurring jokes as a way of "staying in the game" but some of these running jokes need to be taken off life support. Let me repeat that I am NOT coming for your Lorna Luft and Patsy Ramsey posts.

by Anonymousreply 27September 2, 2023 4:32 PM

I thought it meant something said was funny. I use it when I think something someone said is funny. How has this become offensive?

by Anonymousreply 28September 2, 2023 4:36 PM

Seriously, R28, read my post and not just my thread title. This is about a very particular way of [italic]writing[/italic] LOL/lol, which is capital L, lower-case o, capital L, exclamation mark, smiley face. This way of writing it is often posted as a response to someone who has written LOL or lol.

by Anonymousreply 29September 2, 2023 4:42 PM

Any lol derivation or emojis are used by deliciously snarky frauen.

by Anonymousreply 30September 2, 2023 5:19 PM

I am yet to behold this

by Anonymousreply 31September 2, 2023 5:38 PM

Lick Only Lesbians

by Anonymousreply 32September 2, 2023 5:52 PM

I use lol judiciously. I am comfortable with my usage and since I am Gen X , I am fine if it reveals that im old, out of touch, whatever.

by Anonymousreply 33September 2, 2023 7:20 PM

AFAIK in the US and in the UK they don’t awys sp out words like cdc or fda or gop or ncaa they often instead do lol.

It’s a guess anyway

by Anonymousreply 34September 2, 2023 7:28 PM

Ok R29 thank you.

by Anonymousreply 35September 2, 2023 7:36 PM

Sometimes a colon and an opening parenthesis are just a colon and an opening parenthesis.

by Anonymousreply 36September 2, 2023 7:39 PM

I use lol in only one instance- when something someone else posted made me laugh.

I NEVER use it when referring to what I write.

And I ain't gonna stop that.

by Anonymousreply 37September 2, 2023 7:52 PM

Stop that!

by Anonymousreply 38September 2, 2023 8:11 PM

by Anonymousreply 39September 2, 2023 8:23 PM

What about "haha"? That's what us old folks use.

by Anonymousreply 40September 2, 2023 8:25 PM

r40, some used to say 'Hahaha! I'll say!'

by Anonymousreply 41September 2, 2023 8:51 PM

J. Lo is short for Jennifer Lopez.

by Anonymousreply 42September 2, 2023 9:13 PM

We've had a lot of prisspot threads lately with people whining about the way someone else makes a post.

Not the content of the post, but how they post it, the wording.....I mean, really.

Talk about nellie prisspottery......

by Anonymousreply 43September 2, 2023 9:24 PM
Talk about nellie prisspottery......

I always spelled "nelly" with a Y, unless it's a woman's name.

by Anonymousreply 44September 2, 2023 9:28 PM
nellie prisspottery

Where could one acquire this pottery?

by Anonymousreply 45September 2, 2023 9:31 PM

R43, I take it that you're talking about the poster/s who use/s "LoL! :)". Because they only ever do so as a response to others' use of LOL. That's the point of this thread. I'm glad that you agree with me.

by Anonymousreply 46September 2, 2023 9:31 PM

Means ur old. Gen Z uses Jbol (just burst out laughing) now.

by Anonymousreply 47September 2, 2023 9:58 PM

Does Gen Z also use "ur" for "your"?

by Anonymousreply 48September 2, 2023 10:15 PM
J. Lo is short for Jennifer Lopez.

JLoL! :)

by Anonymousreply 49September 2, 2023 10:20 PM

by Anonymousreply 50September 2, 2023 10:26 PM

I did it for the lolz, R50! :)

by Anonymousreply 51September 3, 2023 12:48 AM

El oh ells.

by Anonymousreply 52September 3, 2023 11:45 PM

R48, u’re

by Anonymousreply 53September 4, 2023 12:05 AM

It actually means Lesbians of Laurasia, and it refers to women attracted to other women who lived on the ancient continent of Laurasia approximately 250 million years ago.

by Anonymousreply 54September 4, 2023 12:16 AM

by Anonymousreply 55September 4, 2023 12:32 AM

I will continue to use lol in response to something that made me chuckle, and to let the poster know I thought their post was clever/funny. Mock away.

by Anonymousreply 56September 4, 2023 12:33 AM

LoL! ; )

by Anonymousreply 57September 4, 2023 12:33 AM

I only use it now when I actually chuckle a little bit while reading a post.

by Anonymousreply 58September 4, 2023 2:09 AM
Mock away.

I can't be arsed.

by Anonymousreply 59September 10, 2023 9:55 AM

Lick Old Labia

by Anonymousreply 63September 16, 2023 4:25 PM
Means ur old. Gen Z uses Jbol (just burst out laughing) now.

But that’s different than lol which indicates a light chuckle.

Who knew this could be so technical for some of us.

by Anonymousreply 64September 17, 2023 12:12 PM

Wither LMFAO?

by Anonymousreply 65September 17, 2023 12:22 PM

As already noted, it is overused and should be reserved for something especially funny not just a grinner.

by Anonymousreply 66September 17, 2023 12:25 PM

Boomers are still trying to figure out “lol” huh? Call up AOL customer service and ask.

by Anonymousreply 67September 17, 2023 12:27 PM

^ See R29, where I clarified my original post for the benefit of those who are slow on the uptake/didn't read all of my original post.

by Anonymousreply 72December 15, 2023 1:28 PM

You are an idiot OP.

by Anonymousreply 73December 15, 2023 2:07 PM

by Anonymousreply 76December 16, 2023 4:18 AM

LOL = Lindzebelle O’ Licker 👅

by Anonymousreply 77December 17, 2023 1:14 PM

written communication has become totally informal and like casual speech. the abbreviation is used in lieu of laughter - because peers now text each other more than they speak they developed ways of emoting. It's used all kinds of ways and doesn't always imply laughter. It can be rude, ironic, or affable.

by Anonymousreply 78December 17, 2023 1:18 PM

This thread has me ROTFLMAO.

by Anonymousreply 79January 5, 2024 3:43 AM

I thought the young whippersnappers (and those trying to emulate them) just say “☠️” now, as in they’re ‘dead’, presumably because they died laughing— which seems even more disingenuous to me than lol, which is a lie.

by Anonymousreply 80January 5, 2024 3:49 AM

In dl posts, 'lol' is akin to sharing a smile in silence. 'lol' becomes our gentle nod, quietly whispering, 'Here's the humor asshole' It's the understated touch that adds a dash of charm to our already bitchy discourse.

by Anonymousreply 81January 31, 2024 4:42 PM

Is there an abbreviation for Laughed So Hard I Spit Take Through My Nose?

by Anonymousreply 82January 31, 2024 5:13 PM

by Anonymousreply 83January 31, 2024 7:02 PM

OP, it's just some sad, fat cunt who thinks their response is funny.

by Anonymousreply 84January 31, 2024 7:05 PM

Nellie Prisspottery is most likely available in Truro.

by Anonymousreply 85March 3, 2024 10:29 PM

OP, it's sort of like that asshole who always sat in the last row of your class who would mimic everything someone said. That sort of thing.

There's also a meme/joke where if someone thinks you're saying something dumb, or full of BS, or can't believe what you said, they'll repeat it and alternate upper and lower case letters.

by Anonymousreply 86March 3, 2024 10:49 PM

by Anonymousreply 88March 11, 2024 12:56 AM

Are we forgetting about the fkin smiley face. The smiley face cannot be forgotten. That’s what distinguishes it. Some of you do not read critically.

by Anonymousreply 89March 11, 2024 1:01 AM

Oh JFC it means you think something is so funny that you actually chuckled. I used to feel like a hypocrite using it because most the time I didn't actually LAUGH OUT LOUD. So I restricted my use of it to when I really emitted some sound of mirth while reading something online.

I think it's jaded now from overuse to show humorous approval and not necessarily real laughter.

by Anonymousreply 90March 11, 2024 7:27 PM

OP is typing from 1997, give her a break.

by Anonymousreply 91March 15, 2024 9:59 PM

Way back when, someone reply with "(grin)" instead of "lol" to something I wrote. It's become my go to as a playful nudge in online messages from me and in response to.

It's especially handy for those times when you gotta throw in a joke and make sure everyone knows you're just messing around. Think of it as my internet wink – perfect for hook ups on Sniffies, NKP, Adam4Adam, etc.

by Anonymousreply 92June 22, 2024 4:48 PM

Fuck all of you. I refuse to stop using LOL to mean i had a small laugh at whatever.

by Anonymousreply 93June 22, 2024 5:34 PM

I don't mind using "lol" at all but there are some snobby twits here (okay, let's face it, a lot of snobby twits) who decided it's unacceptable, like kids in 7th grade deciding you were uncool if you wore tube socks with yellow stripes, but not blue or red stripes.

by Anonymousreply 94June 22, 2024 5:52 PM

I'm using LOL whenever

by Anonymousreply 95June 22, 2024 6:00 PM
Typing LOL defines you as an oldster with limited tech skills.

We have solid tech skills. We were using computers prior to every single thing being automated for dummies. All newer generations know how to do is text. They are fucking useless when it comes to anything low level.

Lick On Labia

by Anonymousreply 97June 22, 2024 6:07 PM

Seriously r96.

Spot on.

by Anonymousreply 98June 22, 2024 6:12 PM

Oldsters have actual skills, not skills at using phones and computers that require no real skills. You shits can't even read cursive.

by Anonymousreply 99June 22, 2024 6:14 PM

R99 is that for real? Seriously they can't? Idiots.

by Anonymousreply 100June 23, 2024 3:09 AM

Or read a clock that's not digital.

by Anonymousreply 101June 23, 2024 6:05 PM

Some people write lol after just about everything they text so they can’t be accountable for it and later on say they were just kidding.

by Anonymousreply 102June 23, 2024 8:07 PM

by Anonymousreply 103June 23, 2024 8:22 PM

I had a dear friend who typed LoL. Then she died.
