I just came across a VHS tape auction where some went for up to $50k or more.
I don’t get why VHS tapes are popular. Please explain.

VHs tapes like home videos of famous people? I could see maybe that going for a lot of money. A 1989 copy of Ghost Dad starting Bill Cosby? Maybe not so much

Back around 1983 I purchased two James Dean films on VHS from Colony Records on Broadway; East of Eden & Rebel Without a Cause. I think they cost me about $$50 each, which for me was not cheap. I probably viewed them less that 5 times each over the years, the tapes and their cases are in immaculate condition. I sold them both on Ebay to the same buyer as a package purchase for $325.00. He seemed to be one of those completists who needed to have everything for his collection and in top condition. It may seem like a good return on my money, but considering the coast of inflation over 4 decades, at best I basically just got my money back.

Autographs - authenticated - can be worth a lot. Start collecting people who are alive now.....when they croak, the price goes up.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 26, 2023 11:44 PM |
I have known people who collect local artists’ work. The comment, “If he dies, I’m making bank!” Has been said more than once.
I think asshole patrons are bart of the suffering for artists. Serves them right. I annoy people with artistic vision.

All I know is, don’t believe one of those auction houses at those local shows where they ask you to take your collectibles and they tell you their worth (similar to Antiques Roadshow, on a local scale). I took a Ruth Taylor White “Wine Map Of California” I bought at an antique store for about 35 dollars. White was well known for those whimsical pictorial map lithographs of the 20s, 30, and 40s. I was told it was worthless. I just looked it up and found that at a few auction galleries it’s priced at between $1,500 and $3,000.

R20, depends on what you need and would use on a regular basis.
On eBay, I bought an unused set (4) of Oneida ("cube"0 Michelangelo flatware. I also bought some nice, white bread and butter plates (stoneware) that I use for snacks, small things.
Supposedly, the older Cuisinart food processors are better than what is manufactured, now. Same with the old Kitchen Aid mixers (the gears are all metal).
I wouldn't collect anything with the sole intention to re-sell it.

This.
For years, my Mom was a paralegal for an elder law practice, and she frequently did estate sales for people who downsized, passed away, or moved into assisted living. Up through the ... 2010's (?) it was really good business, and you wouldn't believe the crap people would buy.
Not anymore. You can't give stuff away. Younger people (and when I say younger I mean 40's and under) just don't collect crap on the whole, and any kind of media (records, tapes, DVDs, etc.) is outdated. You may get the weird collector, but that's it.
Even comic books are digitized. You can read Marvel's entire 80+ year catalog on their app for $70 a year. Same with DC.

Vinyl isn’t a weird collector unless your vinyl is a big Liberace collection. New and vintage vinyl is popular with gen z, milleni, gem x and boomers in a big worldwide way in 2023 whether you are aware of it or not. This is FACT not fiction.

My mom left me a lot of costume jewelry—some Eisenberg, some Bakelite that’s about all I know. From the 1940s thru the 1960s. I’m not sure if I should sell it or where. It’s just sitting in boxes and I’m overwhelmed.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | August 28, 2023 3:43 AM |
r62 If it doesn't appeal to you and you have no other family members to pass it on to sell it. You can sell on any number of places. If you post a few pics I will help you with what I can and give you a rough estimate of what it may be worth.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | August 28, 2023 3:49 AM |
That is so kind of you, r63. I don’t have the courage to get to the boxes right now as I’m dealing with a death in my family and another sometime soon.
