What do you think of this song? 50 year old former pop star is trying to reignite her career.

Louise had a number of top ten hits in the UK circa the mid 90s, then disappeared from view. Now she’s back and trying to compete with the likes of Kylie/Dua Lipa. Thoughts?

Who is this bird? Is she one of those “big in Europe” types?

by Anonymousreply 1August 24, 2023 12:25 AM

Her big 90s hit.

Loved her in Eternal. She looks good for 50.

by Anonymousreply 3August 24, 2023 12:37 AM

She always sounded like a dollar store Janet Jackson to me.

by Anonymousreply 4August 24, 2023 12:39 AM

R4 Louise agrees

I like it. I was singing along by the second chorus.

by Anonymousreply 6August 24, 2023 12:57 AM

I like it. Kinda reminds me of Vanity 6 musically

by Anonymousreply 7August 24, 2023 12:59 AM

I don’t know who she is but the song is catchy as shit. Very 80’s and funky. Better than Kylie’s Disco album which sounded cheap and pastiche.

by Anonymousreply 8August 24, 2023 1:06 AM

People really don’t know who she is?

I went along to one of her concerts about 20 years ago and, although I'm not particularly a pop fan, I thought it was really good. She included a few Eternal hits as well as her solo stuff, and had a couple of dancers join her onstage for some slick choreographed moves.

by Anonymousreply 13August 24, 2023 1:21 AM

This is fun! Very Janet / Sheila E.

by Anonymousreply 14August 24, 2023 1:23 AM

R10 I spent my life exploring, the subtle whoring, that cost too much to be free. Lady, I've been to paradise.. but I've never been to me.

by Anonymousreply 15August 24, 2023 1:30 AM

Unless there is a Tina in front of that Louise I. Am. Not. Interested!

by Anonymousreply 16August 24, 2023 1:57 AM

She has no charisma and she sounds like Janet Jackson.

That video has been up 7 months and has only had 131K views. It's a huge flop. Just like Janet Jackson's titty and career.

by Anonymousreply 17August 24, 2023 2:45 AM

Way too Janet jackson.

by Anonymousreply 18August 24, 2023 3:39 AM

Unless there is a Sing Out in front of the Louise, I am not interested

by Anonymousreply 19August 24, 2023 3:46 AM

R17 The accompanying album was just released and she’s about to start a tour. She hasn’t done much press until now. Also, she’s not signed to a major label. Cut the old girl a break.

by Anonymousreply 20August 24, 2023 9:59 PM

Louise is a victim of being known as a celebrity first, and pop star second. She’s famous in the UK for her celebrity relationships, fashion, talk show appearances, tabloid stories, getting her kit off in racy mags… the music was always secondary. I do think the new song is produced really well and leans more Dua Lipa than Kylie, so good on her for managing to sound current. Other than “Padam” I just can’t get into Kylie’s recent stuff, it’s so cheap and dated sounding.

by Anonymousreply 21August 24, 2023 10:06 PM

Sing out!

by Anonymousreply 22August 24, 2023 10:52 PM

R9 Seems like the chocolate girls did all the heavy lifting and whitey was just there as window dressing.

by Anonymousreply 23August 24, 2023 11:05 PM

And yet she became the breakout star. Typical racist England R23

by Anonymousreply 24August 24, 2023 11:08 PM

I'm a big fan of JJ but I like L's version at R5 better.

by Anonymousreply 25August 24, 2023 11:12 PM

Me too R25. Louise also did a blatant knockoff of Janet’s Runaway that I prefer to the OG. Ha.

R29 Shades of Ben Affleck. I would like him in me QUITE deeply.

by Anonymousreply 32August 25, 2023 4:17 AM

Louise tried to hustle for a free birthday party at my old PR firm. She wanted to find a party planner, bakery, entertainment etc who’d all be willing to do it in exchange for a few column inches in some sleazy tabloid. We had to tell her - respectfully - that no one gave a damn about her, and to pay for her own party.

The song is fine.

coming soon: The Monsters of Vaginal Dryness tour! Sponsored by Lululemon and box wine!

by Anonymousreply 40August 25, 2023 11:24 PM

I listened to 'Naked' and the new one and her sound hasn't changed much honestly. Forgettable but fun pop.

Also, I have never heard of her before.

by Anonymousreply 41August 25, 2023 11:32 PM

How did she get this and not Britney?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 42August 25, 2023 11:59 PM

I always get her confused with another British singer named Rachel Stevens. I lived in London in the early-mid Aughts and this song was huge at the time.

Apparently it was written for Britney but she turned it down.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 43August 26, 2023 12:25 AM

Indeed written for Britney, who opted to pick Toxic from the same writer (Cathy Dennis) instead. I still dream of her doing it, or anything off of Rachel's follow up album Come & Get It, the Dusty in Memphis of aughts electropop.

But Rachel suffered the same celebrifate as Louise so this isn't entirely unrelated.

by Anonymousreply 44August 26, 2023 12:51 AM

Oh wow I didn't know Cathy Dennis wrote those! Love her 90s releases.

by Anonymousreply 47August 26, 2023 1:57 AM

If only her former band mates had the same drive for their careers. They were so good and I loved Easthers vocals, one of Britain’s best vocalist. Someday, I Am Blessed and this…

by Anonymousreply 50August 26, 2023 4:58 AM

I don't know her

by Anonymousreply 51August 26, 2023 4:59 AM

R43 Rachel Stevens was my guilty pleasure while I was living in London. She was so, so famous for a brief moment - she felt like the heir apparent to Kylie, and then *poof* she was gone as fast as she came. “Some Girls” remains a fave!

Seriously, if Rachel's Come & Get It had Britneys name on it it would be as beloved as Blackout

I would have liked it. Thirty years ago.

by Anonymousreply 54August 26, 2023 9:10 PM

R54 It’s supposed to be a Janet/Prince throwback. The 80s are in. Just listen to The Weeknd or Dua Lipa.

by Anonymousreply 57August 27, 2023 1:24 AM

Poor Louise. Not even enough interest to keep her thread from getting hijacked by Rachel Stevens

by Anonymousreply 58August 27, 2023 2:32 AM

The two sisters in Eternal were a pair of bullies. After Louise left the group the two sister were horrible to Kelly, the other remaining member. Famously they made her sing her lines for their latest album over the telephone so they wouldn’t have to have her in the studio. Kelly is still around and works on TV as a panellist and an actress. The two cunt sisters? Haven’t heard anything about them in many years.

In one of their final songs as a four piece band poor white Louise was almost completely edited out of the video, this was to try and market it for the US market were multi racial singing groups were not so common. Louise left the band after this, she was bar far the most popular member anyway.

by Anonymousreply 59August 27, 2023 8:53 AM

All of them are terrible. No charisma, average singers and poorly constructed music with no hook. I can't put it any more bluntly.

She even just flat out covers Together Again at R5. Is she supposed to be a Janet Jackson impersonator? She's not very good.

I love Cathy Dennis though. She had stacks of charisma, an average/good voice and very well crafted, catchy, memorable music.

by Anonymousreply 60August 27, 2023 9:06 AM

Louise was popular because she is a pretty girl-next-door type who sang sexy songs and married a handsome footballer (every chav whore's dream), but she wasn't the breakout star of Eternal, R24. She was reasonably successful and had a few sizeable hits, but Eternal were HUGE in the 90s. It's not like her career took off and they were forgotten, so keep your accusations of racism for some other time.

Also, R10 - R11 - R12 and R21 are right. Louise soon realized that she could make more money by whoring it up for the tabloids than by singing, so she started to get her clothes off and court controversy instead of releasing music. Also, her voice is stronger than Janet Jackson's paper thin whisper vocals, but she was never going to impress anyone with it... Still, if Kylie Minogue has managed to make her career last for over 30 years by basically whining her way through almost identical songs, I don't see why others shouldn't have been able to do the same.

R44, I've always wondered what happened to Rachel. She was MASSIVELY successful and then, she disappeared in a puff of smoke. To me, her music was an acquired taste, but it was a million times more original than the rubbish released by other singers, who have been much more successful by doing less (the likes of Rita Ora, Charli XCX, Ella Mai and Anne-Marie come to mind).

by Anonymousreply 61August 27, 2023 10:46 AM

Kudos that this former slag pop tart keeps it rather klassy in this video. There's nothing embarrassing about the song or the voice but it's forgettable as well.

by Anonymousreply 62August 27, 2023 10:54 AM

^^^ Coming from a council estate chav like yourself that’s really saying something.

by Anonymousreply 63August 27, 2023 2:08 PM

I don't think Rachel was ever massively successful, not musically, she did the LA ex song and Some Girls but the rest were minor hits at best. Not to say the second album wasn't an absolute classic, it just didn't sell, it was put together by Girls Alouds team. I always loved I said Never Again (but here we are), everyone says it about anal! ha.

As for Eternal R59 I think that's only partly true, Kelle wanted out, then they had a number one and she wanted in again so she stayed but the Bennett sisters were tired of her always threatening to leave and changing plans, so they eventually fired her by fax for breach of contract. The record company spent a fortune just before this on top producers from USA to produce some stuff for them including a cover of Fleetwood Mac Dreams, but it was all scrapped as Kelle wouldn't commit to a tour of the USA.

Louise sounds like a name at the retirement community.
