Animals on the Attack Again! This time, it's Otters in Montana

Three women were hospitalized in Montana after they were the victims of a vicious attack by an otter.

Jen Royce said that she and her friends were on a floating trip on the Jefferson River to celebrate her birthday when the animal attacked them.

"I saw one otter right behind my friend before it attacked. I didn't even have a chance to get the words 'there is an otter behind you' out of me before it attacked her," she wrote in a Facebook post, which included graphic photos of her injuries.

She said that the otter was "vicious and relentless" and bit her all over her body in an attack that lasted around five minutes.

"Without ANY exaggeration, God's honest truth, I did not think I was going to make it out of that river. I had no clue if my friends were going to make it out. But by the grace of God, we did," she wrote.

"I was covered in blood and it just kept pouring out of my face and nose. It was cold. We were wet. It was dark," Royce added.

After escaping the river, the three women had to wait nearly an hour for help to arrive, the post says.

Royce said she was eventually airlifted to hospital, where she received stitches and underwent surgery on her face and ears.

She said she now had "more stitches in my body than I can count," puncture wounds all over her body, and had lost almost half of her right ear. She also had have several rabies shots.

Her two friends were also taken to hospital to have their wounds treated.

In an update to a GoFundMe page that was set up to help cover the medical expenses, Royce said the trauma of the attack would be difficult to get over.

The incident is one in a string of recent otter attacks across the US, including one involving Succession actor Crystal Finn in northern California.

While otter attacks on humans are rare, they can be hostile if they feel threatened.

Royce asked people not to victim shame and said she wanted to clarify that she and her friends did not intentionally get close to the animal.

North American River Otters can grow three to 4½ feet long, with the tail constituting 35-40% of the animal's total length and weighing up to 34 pounds.

Something is definitely off with the Animal Kingdom this year.

I don't know if it's climate change, or what.

But all is not right with the animals.

by Anonymousreply 2August 21, 2023 5:05 AM

You’d think there were some nice otters in Montana.

by Anonymousreply 8August 21, 2023 5:19 AM

Even animals are enraged AF.

We’ve destroyed their environment & keep taking more.

I predict more of this as time marches on.

We’re going to have to change, my fellow humans, or we are going to pay for our hubris in ways not imagined, like getting massively fucked up by an Otter for five minutes.

by Anonymousreply 9August 21, 2023 5:25 AM

Oh, you didn't know?

by Anonymousreply 16August 21, 2023 6:26 AM

"The River Wild" desperately needed a scene where rabid otters attack M.

by Anonymousreply 17August 21, 2023 6:34 AM

Please forgive me, I'm a bit out of sorts, I don't understand what the women were doing. What is a river float and why were they in the water at night? Or maybe it just got dark while waiting for medical help.

by Anonymousreply 18August 21, 2023 6:37 AM

Told you i was out of sorts- it says floating trip, not river float.

What the heck is a floating trip, though? Are you on a boat and occasionally go swimming? How did this otter take on three women at the same time?

by Anonymousreply 19August 21, 2023 6:40 AM

R19 I googled "floating trip" and came up with some photos.

I'm guessing it must look something like this.

Which means either the otter was stalking the women, or it actively sought them out to attack them. Assuming they were in the middle of the river.

If they were near the river bank, then maybe the women got too close to its home/den or babies.

In any case, this is bizarre.

In California, it's not just random otter attacks, but gangs of otters terrorizing people. It's like Planet of the Apes, only with otters. Soon they'll have us all in cages.

Time to start carrying a knife wherever you go.

Otters are NOT cute animals. They are vicious and relentless when attacking.

by Anonymousreply 35August 21, 2023 1:54 PM

Years ago a woman told me the tale of sea otters who would swim by her place and taunt her dogs. One day, one of her dogs fell in the water and the sea otters attacked and killed it. It doesn't end there.

For the next week or so the sea otters would swim by and HOLD UP the carcass to further taunt the remain dogs!

by Anonymousreply 36August 21, 2023 2:03 PM

[quote]But all is not right with the animals.

But fortunately we animals are so safe under the beneficent care of homo sapiens!

by Anonymousreply 37August 21, 2023 2:07 PM

[quote] Otters are NOT cute animals. They are vicious and relentless when attacking.

I don't think anyone here said they were.

The curious thing is that it doesn't seem like the women were doing anything to bother the otters, according to their statement.

So what makes this case unusual is that the otter chose to attack them, out of nowhere.

That's unusual behavior for most animals, who usually choose to avoid humans.

But just as in the cases of the shark attacks, bear attacks, and gator attacks recently, animals seem to be losing their fear of us.

And that should worry us all!

by Anonymousreply 38August 21, 2023 2:27 PM

So, if you are just tubing, can't the otter just bite the tube, causing it to deflate and sink, leaving the human in the water to make their own way by swimming or drowning? Leaving the human as fresh prey for any otter or otters in the area?

Sounds like the otters haven't figured that out yet.

When they inevitably discover it by at first accidentally biting the tube, they'll show their otter buddies and that will be the end of those tuber trips. Game over.

Sort of like the scene in the second (I think) Jurassic Park movie (The Lost World?) where the dinosaur mom in the hold of the ship, just took a few strategic bites out of the bad human, leaving the dino kiddies to eat their fill?

We don't know that r38. They may have had their young nearby.

by Anonymousreply 41August 21, 2023 3:46 PM

^And the women might have been noisy and the otter might have gotten spooked.

by Anonymousreply 42August 21, 2023 4:19 PM

The women were probably lying their tits off and had it coming. 'Oh, we were just doing nothing and the horrible otter attacked us out of nowhere!'

I disagree with "otters are not cute." From a purely physical perspective, I think they're very cute. "Cute" personality or character is another story.

Otters are into beastiality, who knew? Well come male otters who rape seal pups. Per R30's link.

by Anonymousreply 47August 21, 2023 10:46 PM

What is a a "floating trip" exactly? Why was it "dark". Were they TUBING in a river in the dark?

by Anonymousreply 48August 21, 2023 10:48 PM

I wonder.... If the otter smelled fish.

by Anonymousreply 49August 21, 2023 10:51 PM

r47 The seal pups were askin for it..they came on to the otters...they had cute white fur.

by Anonymousreply 50August 21, 2023 10:57 PM

This is extremely unusual but let’s remember these are not the cute otters you see in Carmel. These are river otters and these motherfuckers are REAL, to paraphrase crazy plane lady.

They are BIG and they are fierce hunters. (There are some in South America that are fucking HUGE and those bitches will attack jaguars.)

All that said, they will attack and kill dogs, but it’s super unusual for an American river otter to attack humans. These women must be very small and must have appeared distressed.

by Anonymousreply 53August 22, 2023 1:12 AM

Stories like this make me not want to go out into nature at all.

Attention! Attention river floaters! This is Miss Schuster. Please listen very carefully. A romp of killer otters is coming this way.

by Anonymousreply 56August 22, 2023 12:04 PM

I hope cases like these are rare and that is why they are newsworthy. Encounters with wildlife can turn dangerous very quickly, especially in environments like tubing, where the human has the disadvantage of being out of their usual (terrestrial) environment.

I agree that it’s really important to stay clear from wild animals when you can. This story looks as though these people were set upon by dangerous aquatic species. They are lucky not to have drowned in the trauma of it all.

[quote] 'They wanted to kill me': Swimmer says otters bit him 12 times in California lake

A swimmer said he feared for his life after he was attacked by otters in a scenic Northern California lake, leaving him with around 40 puncture wounds.

Matt Leffers said he was bitten at least 12 times while swimming at Serene Lakes in Placer County, about 90 miles northeast of Sacramento, on Sept. 3.

Leffers told NBC News affiliate KCRA 3 in an interview on Thursday, two months after the attack, that he had been swimming in the lake, where his family has a cabin, for 30 years. But he had never experienced anything like this.

He felt something bite his calf and then suffered another bite within seconds.

"And then I started swimming fast, but there was the otter, popped up right in front of me, and then I was bit again," he said.

"These things were so aggressive that, literally, I felt like they wanted to kill me," he continued. "It is by far the most terrifying experience I’ve ever had in my life. Nothing even comes close."

Leffers' wife had to rescue him on a paddleboat before taking him to the hospital. Pictures from the hospital shared with KRCA show Leffers' leg badly cut and covered in blood. Months later, the scars remain.

KCRA 3 spoke to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, which confirmed that an otter attack took place at Serene Lakes in July — prompting Leffers to call for greater action.

"I think the fact that I’m the second person attacked here this summer, it’s a big red flag," he said.

Peter Tira, a spokesperson for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, told KCRA 3 that otters had also attacked dogs in the Redding area. He stressed that while otter attacks on people are very rare, they are a predator species that is very good at swimming and has very sharp teeth.

"They won’t normally attack people or larger animals. However, they will defend their territory if they feel threatened, whether that’s a real threat or perceived threat," Tira said.

One theory is that the otters are attracted to the lake and emboldened by its high fish population.

A letter to the Serene Lakes community dated Sept. 21, which was obtained by KCRA 3 from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, said that biologists who visited the lake "agreed that the abundance of fish in the lake is a likely cause for otter presence and behavior."

Leffers said the department's response was "wimpy."

"They need to mitigate the situation before somebody gets killed," he said.

The letter said state wildlife officials were working to confirm the number of otters at Serene Lakes and would develop a strategy once they have more information.

Otter attacks are not unheard of in America. In September, a rabid otter bit a man and a dog in Florida before it was captured.

Three women were injured in August when an otter attacked them as they floated on a Montana river.

In July, California wildlife officials reported that a 5-year-old sea otter was "aggressively approaching people and biting surfboards" near Santa Cruz. The wildlife department said it planned to capture the creature and place it in a zoo or aquarium.

NBC News has contacted the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for comment.
