I'm old enough (as I am a San Fernando Valley relic ) to remember when the "Westfield" Topanga Plaza Mall looked like this:
What was the Beverly center like back in 70’s and 80’s

I like it. What were the colorful phallic pods surrounding the clocktower?

Looks so dark.

It wasn't "there" in the 1970s.

My BAD, R5, I linked the wrong photo! The colorful pods around the phallic clocktower were from a mall in Rochester.

What were the anchor stores? Maybe a movie theatre attached or adjacent? Tearooms for cruising?
No fancy glass elevator there? Hmmm...those liikely didn't appear in malls until the late 70s like at the new (but now razed?) Galleria in White Plains with JC Penney and Abraham & Strays (active tearooms).
Food court? The Galleria had a men's room next to the food court with a glory hole (at least in 1980 or so for however long they allowed it). I'd cruise from there to JC Penney to A&S for action at 20 years old. Hmmm ..maybe I "encountered" some of your there! Not sure what that type of scene fizzed out there....probably 15-20 years ago, like most tearooms?

The anchor stores when Topanga Plaza opened were The May Company, The Broadway & Montgomery Ward.

What year did you seroconvert, R9?

r2 Of all the stores in that tenant list, I think the only ones still in existence (anywhere, not just at that mall) are See's Candies, Lane Bryant (which sort of have a symbiotic relationship), and maybe City National Bank and Orange Julius.

Diagonally across from the mall was a giant Toys R Us, and across the street from that was a makeshift amusement park with a super-slide. “Tiny Town,” I think.

Memories of a simpler time, when shit like this didn't happen.

Yes, R14! I don't remember what that place was called, but I definitely remember the giant, super-slide! Loved that thing!

R14: Here's an aerial view of Topanga & Victory, early 1970s. You can see the slide! (there was miniature golf next to it)

R16 That was more fun than the mall, IMO, but I do have fond memories of Orange Julius, the ice rink, and Spencer’s (with their psychedelic lights and dirty novelties). Raj of India made the whole mall smell like incense. There was also a hippy shop named “Earth Craft” (I think) that sold things like geode rocks and perpetual motion gizmos. I don’t see it on the list of stores, though. However, the kitschiest place I remember was the Jolly Roger restaurant where the servers dressed like pirates and gave out paper captain hats to the diners.
