In order starting at 8 am: an apple crumb pie, four chocolate croissants, fresh corn, and a cinnamon coffee cake at a local farm stand/bakery. We ate the corn at dinner and everything else is frozen.
Two incredible and pricey $7.00 eclairs from the local French patisserie. Worth it. Also consumed.
Silodosin, 8 mg. Drugstore.
Whole Foods Chocolate chip cookies, also now frozen.
Six cases of high potency infused Black Cherry soda at the not so local dispensary where it’s cheapest. Big discount by the case and the smokista was cute, wheeled it out to the car and loaded it for me besides. Nice young man: $20 tip.
Potting soil at Lowe’s.

Yarn. Michael's has had such a lousy display of yarn lately. Today was pretty good, I guess the delivery truck finally made its appearance. Today I bought supplements (that will later produce expensive piss) and a suit on super super sale that I really want and which is 1 size too small to help motivate me to lose some more weight. Later I might buy some fragrance. At the Midnight to 2 am time frame, online fragrance shops change their promotions for the week and they occasionally list a few bottles to clear out at 50-75% off. These get snapped up quickly. Fo example $400 bottles of Amouage for 100 bucks.

My honorary nephew likes those; I get them for him to have when he comes over. Have you tried Clear American Cherry Limeade? Those are excellent, by themselves, or with vanilla ice cream as a float. "Clear American" - first time I've heard of it. Is that some play on "Clearly Canadian" seltzer water?
Today I bought Boudreax's Butt paste and baby aspirin because my elderly dog has developed the equivalent of diaper rash on his abdomen/genital area and I also think he has a UTI - he's been panting like hell for the past 3 days and today started acting strange when I took him out to do his business. He very clearly didn't want to pee. He has become periodically incontinent over the past couple weeks and I thought it was just a progression of his semi-paralysis in his back legs which he developed a year ago. Now I'm not so sure about that, so I'll be taking him to the vet tomorrow.
I also bought Barkeeper's Friend and 0000 steel wool to try and take care of my not-yet-solved problem with hard water spots on my shower doors (I've tried everything else). And distilled water to use when cleaning so i don't cause more build up while cleaning. If it works, I'll be coating the shower doors with Rain-X so this doesn't happen again.
And a 2 liter of diet Coke.

Underwear from China online. The deals vary. I at least, will only buy 100 or 95% cotton which rules out 90% of the thousands of styles they offer. I’ve learned the metric system for clothing sizes, anyway, and thus far the quality’s been good and some of the prices have been great. More than anything it’s the selection: vast.
Every time I order I wonder if I’ll get it before we go to war with the Chinese. How will they handle returns?
by Anonymous | reply 68 | August 13, 2023 11:11 PM |
r59 My pleasure. Here ya' go:
3 cups of water(tap water is fine, but you could use distilled if you want)
1/2 cup rubbing alcohol(70%)
1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide(3%, the standard stuff)
1 tsp. dishwashing liquid(Dawn, Palmolive, whatever you got)
1 TBSP. of the liquid drying/sheeting agent that is used in dishwashing machines( Jet-Dri, Cascade, whatever you got)
Pour everything, in the order given(a couple of these ingredients are very bubbly if poured in too fast) S-L-O-W-L-Y into an empty, washed-out opaque 32 fl.oz. spray bottle(it must be opaque or the peroxide degrades pretty quickly, thereby becoming useless) Once everything is in the sprayer, give it a few easy shakes to combine. Spray this mixture after every shower on shower doors, tile, chrome, etc. Don't squeegee anything beforehand, this mixture will combine with any wetness and make it easier for it to run down vertical surfaces. No need to rinse it off. After awhile you'll get to know just how much and where to spray, because the dishwashing liquid will let you see where the runoff goes. This spray can't remove crusted-on hard water build-up, make sure your shower surfaces are clean before you use it the first time. In other words, clean your shower to your satisfaction, take a shower, then use this stuff after every shower from then on. 🚿 😁

Hit Trader Joe's™ big time for my monthly fill-up there. A lot of the usual stuff: berries, sprouts, avocados, tomatoes, kefir, canned beans, lemons, chips, walnuts, brewed tea, vitamins, oatmeal, cheese, nectarines, spices, pasta. Far fewer customers than usual, I guess they were all at their villas in the south of France.
Went to a local bakery(Sarcone's™) for some sesame hoagie rolls and pepperoni bread(my brother and SIL love these and they are always so good to me, so a treat for them was in order)
Didn't realize I was out of 10X sugar to make icing(doing cupcakes for a friend who is having family in for the weekend) so I had to peg out to the Acme™(only a block away)

I took my collapsible wagon up to the grocery store. I was checking out and the checker mentioned she saw me being super patient in the deli with the new worker. The woman in front of me forgot her card in her car and had to go get. I was like, no worries! to the cashier. She gave me all my reusable bags and a pound of bacon I was buying for free because 'so many people are just nasty to us, you've been so nice' 😊

It is, BAG/R176 and there's something funny about it: it's the store brand with a limit of ten gallons per customer where the eleventh and subsequent gallons cost $4.59 per. Who wants ten gallons of milk at a time? Do bodegas sell milk by the glass? Plus, a half-gallon of the same store brand milk is $2.09.
I know the dairy farms in the Northeast are hurting: people don't drink whole rich white milk like they used to, but it almost seems like they're dumping the milk for less than the cost of producing it.

r179 I thought there was a minimum price for milk in all states? Perhaps I was misinformed or the regulation has been rescinded. Maybe they ARE simply trying to compete with the plant-based milk companies.
Has that price been steady for awhile? Are the prices for other milk-derived items similarly low? Is 2% milk around the same price, or just the 4% stuff?? How much longer can they sell it so cheaply, unless they are gearing it to be a huge loss leader.
With milk that moderately priced, it may be time to try your hand at home cheesemaking. Try out one of my YouTube "husbands" how-to videos, over at Gavin Webber. Hubba hubba.

I bought a rom man from Albania lunch. He was begging by the station. I said I don't have money, He said I don't want money sirI'm hungry please buy me a kebab. I looked to see if I had cash and I did not. I walked a hundred meters to a kebab place and bought him the lunch kebab lunch plate. I paid. I was standing on the sidewalk and wished him well and he went to sit down and the owner came tearing out really angry at me. He said the guy is a nuisance. The Albanian was quite clean and skinny and not wacked out. I said OK I understand but your counter man sold me the lunch so it's too late. He needs to eat now. The owner was giving me shit. I firmly told him that I understood his issue BUT IT WAS TOO LATE BECAUSE HIS RESTAURANT ALREADY SOLD ME THE LUNCH AND SAW WHO I WAS BUYING IT FOR. I told him to put it in a bag and tell the guy to take it out, but he was a jerk, because the guy wanted the dignity to eat his humble lunch at the humble table and why did he bother opening a restaurant if he didn't understand it was a service industry. Sheesh!

R248 you have a point to an extent.
I do buy at local luxury shops in Vienna, Paris, Rome and London. However between Battistoni/Knize (that is to say, traditional tailors who source in their own countries) and H&M it's mostly towards the Asian crap nowadays. Famous brand name "quality" clothes are quite often the same crap. So I buy H&M's crap.
Zara is a bit better, it's not all East and South Asia. So you can buy pieces made in Turkey, Morocco, even Portugal.

Tried to buy a Lindt milk chocolate bar - store only had the white chocolate (Lindt) bar. Maybe I should have tried it.
Got a can of mackerel packed in oil, Late July jalapeño & lime tortilla chips, 12 eggs (for egg salad), bananas (too lazy to buy watermelon or pineapple, which require work), prepared salsa (refrigerated section), macaroni noodles (I'm going to try Kenji Lopez-Alt's method of making mac / cheese), Triscuit crackers, black beans (dried).

Plastic wrap that’s strong to seal in the goodness of our hot daily fudge. You’d be surprised how many brands simply won’t seal in all that fresh goodness! Our trick is to lay a sheet on the floor, go potty, then wrap it up like a croissant. It just freezes better and looks better when served that way. We could go on forever but we feel a fresh batch is on the way!

Cellophane bags from DollarTree™. When I make pizzelles(made some this afternoon) I like to seal them in these bags which are the perfect size, not only to store them but also to give away as treats to friends.
Non-chocolate goodies to take to my stitching group on Tuesdays. Made a haul with: Cracker Jack™, Tootsie Pops™, bubble gum, shortbread cookies and caramels.
Peperoni bread from Sarcone's™ Bakery, just off the Italian Market( or simply 9th Street, as we used to call it BITD) Also snagged a slice of their white pizza liberally flavored with rosemary. Damn that stuff is good.

r269 Ah, Bronzie. 9th Street. I bought a pound of Parm from what may have been the most beautiful man I have ever seen in person. He was working in the cheese area of one of the shops. It was my first time there, so I don't know if it was DiBruno's or not. It was on the left side of the street if the river is to your right. It was in the late '90s, and he looked like a smaller, shorter John Travolta, with the same swimming-pool eyes.

r271 Might've been Claudio's, but more than likely DiBruno's: small, cramped, and packed to the rafters with goodies. It was just the one place BITD, now they have a mini-empire with a big presence in Center City.
Did you ever go into that specialty butcher shop that a little bit north of DiBruno's on the opposite side of there street? They sold exotic meats like giraffe, alligator and such. The owner was another gorgeous guy, very 1940's look, very handsome, matinee idol good looks. The shop's not there anymore, I hope that guy is making someone somewhere very happy.

[quote] "[R290], I like Waterloo grape seltzer but can never find it in stores. Thanks for the reminder to order a case online"
The grape is AWESOME, R296! It's one of my favorites. Where I am, grocers typically sell three of these Waterloo eight packs for $11. But after some checking, I found that even if the Amazon price DOES go over that, it's negligible, because it's also being delivered directly to the house.
And they have all of the flavors available too (though they do occasionally sell out, which is expected).

This is an odd one.
I watched a documentary, yesterday, about how chocolate is made. Like the methods, how the bean and where it is grown makes a huge difference, fermenting, etc.
What I really learned is I have been eating mediocre chocolate all my life, so I went to multiple places to find decent chocolate. There was one local place in my city that had some good variety, but I’m surprised to say, Whole Foods had, by a mile, the best variety of chocolate. I’m sure overpriced, but it was good.
I spent almost $80 on random dark chocolate.
