Caroline Kennedy recreates her father JFK’s heroic World War II swim

Eighty years ago, then-US Navy lieutenant and future US President John F. Kennedy heroically swam between Pacific islands to help save the crew of his torpedo boat that had been destroyed by a Japanese warship during World War II.

On Wednesday, his daughter Caroline Kennedy, now US ambassador to Australia, recreated a portion her father’s feat, swimming about three quarters of a mile (1.2 kilometers) in some 30 minutes between two tiny palm-fringed islets in the Solomon Islands.

Kennedy, 65, made the swim with her son, the late president’s grandson, Jack Schlossberg.

“It gave me a renewed appreciation of the heroism of my father and his crew,” the ambassador said in a post on the US Embassy’s account on Twitter, now known as X.

“I have a lot of appreciation and admiration for what my grandfather did, and the perseverance it must have taken to survive,” Schlossberg said in a Twitter post.

Jack is a weirdo but I kinda want to S his D.

by Anonymousreply 2August 3, 2023 7:38 AM

Like, um, I swam, you know, from, like, island to, um, island.

Doesn't quite match the headline.

Jack would have never come within 4000 miles of Japanese destroyers if J Edgar Hoover hadn't tipped off old Joe that his son with the cushy Washington DC desk job was fucking a lovely German spy. Strings were pulled and Jack was sent as far away as possible so as not to compromise young Joe's expected future presidential run.

Gotta hand it to her. She has a great physique for a 65 y.o. I'd kill for her arms and I'm 5 years younger.

by Anonymousreply 5August 3, 2023 8:19 AM

Jack needs to strip off completely.

by Anonymousreply 6August 3, 2023 8:23 AM

No way would I have attempted that (and I can swim!), what with sharks!

The drill is well established.

I'm reasonably confident she had no less than one escort boat with armed spotters plus swimmers ready to pull her in if necessary. Plus probably a helicopter watching for signs of danger. No way they'd risk losing a Biden-supporting Kennedy.

Whatever next? Recreating his trip to Dallas?

by Anonymousreply 9August 3, 2023 9:12 AM

His torso is so sexy

I was thinking that too; she looks great. Good for her living her best life. Jack is a weirdo, but all things considered I guess he could be worse

WHAT qualifies this woman to continually be given ambassadorships? Biden shows so much favoritism in his appointments that it irritates the fuck out of me. Pete Buttigieg gives lip service and gets out of a race and, surprise! Gets a cabinet level position that he is immensely umqualified for. Only African-American women considered for Supreme Court appointments. Wealthy 1%’ers from old political families given ambassadorships just because they gave money and are members of an inner circle of elites. Fuck that. He’s every bit as corrupt as Trump.

Fuck off. Get back to us when he tries to steal an election.

by Anonymousreply 13August 3, 2023 12:38 PM

R12...it's like legacy admissions in colleges...

Privilege is pervasive. For politics, just look at the appointments in both Democrat andRepublican Administrations. They are chock full of people who have served in previous administrations (which is good, we want people who are talented and experienced) or the sons of daughters of well-connected people in the parties.

Ambassadorships to friendly countries and those non-sensitive often go to political connections.

Caroline Kennedy is a Harvard-educated lawyer (legacy) who has been ambassador to Japan and Australia...two rather cushy positions. Both allies...the US ambassador to either probably won't have to deal with controversial issues requiring intricate diplomatic skills...hence a political gift.

by Anonymousreply 14August 3, 2023 12:51 PM

Well, I can’t see Jackie O. pulling off something like that.

by Anonymousreply 15August 3, 2023 12:54 PM

^To add to what R14 said, I read somewhere that even know it's well known that these diplomatic gigs are political gifts, countries are insulted if you send them someone nobody who happens to be a big donor because they own Pornhub (or some such thing). Even though RFK Jr has done everything in his power to shit all over it, the Kennedy name still means something in many parts of the world. So she's as qualified as any other candidate in a country that we're on generally friendly terms.

by Anonymousreply 16August 3, 2023 12:57 PM

I was going to say essentially the same thing as r16. The Japanese were over the moon when Obama appointed her and considered it an honor.

by Anonymousreply 17August 3, 2023 1:05 PM

At least she didn't show her bush.

by Anonymousreply 18August 3, 2023 1:08 PM

I would have done it with more panache.

Now if only RFK Jr. would reenact his father getting shot in the head.

I sped through the video at r8 hoping to see more of the guy in green floating in the water at r8. He is right up my alley.

I didn’t spot him, though. Here’s the consolation prize:

Lt Joseph Messina, MH-65 Dolphin pilot.

I’ve long thought - wrinkles & all - she is a very handsome woman. And I mean that as a compliment.

by Anonymousreply 22August 3, 2023 3:56 PM

Next, Caroline Kennedy will recreate her cousin Little Edie's flag dance.

R12 is just a real piece of work. Posts show they deny liking Trump but everything else is race agita and hating on Democrats.

by Anonymousreply 24August 3, 2023 10:40 PM

[quote]He’s every bit as corrupt as Trump.

R12, you lost your credibility with this statement.

by Anonymousreply 25August 4, 2023 8:10 AM

This. Never. Happened.

by Anonymousreply 26August 4, 2023 8:13 AM

[quote] [R12], you lost your credibility with this statement.

One cannot lose that which does not exist.

by Anonymousreply 27August 4, 2023 1:13 PM

R12 She also inherited Jackie’s money, plus her brother John’s fortune after a settlement with the Bessett family. Most ambassadorships are doled out due to financial contributions. Caroline is actually one of the more qualified ones.
