"Europe is nothing but hype!"

It is the summer of European travel, at least according to many social media feeds, where it seems like everyone you follow is either in Paris or on Italy's Amalfi Coast.

In response, it has also become the summer of being mad at travel influencers — for hyping up far-flung destinations that, some complain, turn out to be less idyllic than said influencers made them out to be.

"Europe ain't nothing but hype," griped one TikToker, Malfoy, in June, when he went to Paris and said that everything was "ugly and smelled like pee."

Call it the global, 2023 version of Paris Syndrome — a term coined by Japanese psychiatrist Hiroaki Ota in the 1980s and referring to the extreme disappointment felt by those visiting the City of Light after arriving with sky-high expectations.

But is it fair to hold places, as displayed on curated social media posts, to such a high standard? Here, experts weigh in on the psychological impact of the latest Instagram vs. reality debate.

Malfoy's post about the "hype" of Europe has received over 900,000 likes.

But there are many with a similar tone, including one in which a woman shared a video calling out "every single influencer and TikToker" who has posted about the Amalfi Coast, for not showing how "impossible" it is to reach the destination.

"First of all, it's impossible to get here. You have to fly into Naples. Then you have to take a train from Naples to Sorrento. Then you have to stand in 90-degree weather waiting for a ferry to get on a ferry with all of your luggage," said Lexi Jordan in her video, which got over 60,000 likes on TikTok and started even more travel discourse on Twitter.

Meanwhile, plenty of other content creators have been returning from European vacations only to sound off about them being devoid of AC, ice and even vegetables.

It's well known that one of the biggest jobs of an influencer is to, well, influence. And experts say expecting the same experiences as those curated by creators who are paid to woo their audiences can be a recipe for disaster.

"It's an expectancy violation," Jacqueline Sperling, a clinical psychologist and the author of Find Your Fierce, tells Yahoo Life.

"What you're seeing posted is what you're expecting to see or experience. And if it goes in a direction that is less pleasant than we were expecting, then that can be disappointing and frustrating," she explains.

Additionally, Sperling says, the financial and mental effort that goes into planning these trips can exacerbate pressure for travelers to have a "picture-perfect" trip.

"You've invested a lot to make it happen, and you may get there and it's not what you're hoping for. That may be very disenchanting," she says.

Sperling adds that Paris Syndrome has likely plagued travelers going anywhere in the world due to promises made even pre-social media, through glowing depictions in books, TV shows and movies leading to lofty expectations. It can all leave travelers feeling let down when their globe-trotting adventures don't mimic what they've seen on the silver screen. "It's important for people to realize that maybe what they're seeing is just a snippet that may not reflect the full picture of what actually happens," says Sperling.

In order to enjoy social media and traveling, Sperling says, it's important to examine your relationship with the apps.

"Are you using [social media] actively or passively?" she asks, explaining that active social media use, such as sharing posts of your own, has been found to have less of a negative impact on users as compared to passive social media use, such as "scrolling through one's news feed."

She adds that passive usage can often translate into "opportunities for comparison" and suggests rating how you feel before and after using the apps to gauge whether or not you need to make changes to your social media routine.

Others say it's important to remember that people typically share only their "highlight reel" online and are careful to leave out "negative experiences," says travel agent Molly McShea.

"Pictures online don't always capture the crowds or the heat," she tells Yahoo Life, explaining that perfection is not a realistic expectation for any trip.

"That's just not travel. Travel is never perfect, but that can lead to really great adventures," says McShea.

Regarding travel logistics, she notes that social media should serve only as a preliminary guide when planning a trip — and that actual research regarding a destination's climate, culture and transportation system is imperative for a well-planned vacation. It also helps with managing expectations.

"Establishing those expectations beforehand helps people, when they actually go on the trip, to know what they're getting into," says McShea.

But keeping an open mind, she stresses, might be the best travel hack of all.

"Looking into cultural norms beforehand is definitely important," says McShea. "But also be open to learning [once you arrive]. That's the whole point of travel: to learn, and to have new experiences."

[quote] Meanwhile, plenty of other content creators have been returning from European vacations only to sound off about them being devoid of AC, ice and even vegetables.

Lol this is so true.

My biggest complaint, the first time I went to Europe, was the lack of "convenience."

In the US, everything is designed to be very convenient. From fast food, to literal "convenience stores" like 7-11, to drive throughs, etc.

Europe is very INconvenient.

by Anonymousreply 11July 29, 2023 7:21 PM

The lack of AC, ice, as available water is certainly true.

But it's best to travel off season, why deal with the heat when you are trying to walk around and deal with deep crowds of tourists.

by Anonymousreply 12July 29, 2023 7:26 PM

Parts of Europe can be quite nice. Parts are stupid. And that’s the way the world is overall.

by Anonymousreply 13July 29, 2023 7:29 PM

Why would you think it’s paradise? It wasn’t before the pandemic and it certainly isn’t now.

by Anonymousreply 14July 29, 2023 7:32 PM

There's a reason why many Americans with European ancestry refer to it as the OLD COUNTRY.

maybe these stupid American should open their senses and realize:

1) retail shopping is often better

2) the food tastes better - natural not chemicals

3) all kinds of infrastructure EVERYWHERE is usually better. In particular public transport. And public facilities.

by Anonymousreply 28July 29, 2023 8:25 PM

With the notable exception of NY, European cities are more walkable and have better public transportation than American cities r29.

Of course that is also the problem with some American tourists. Many are not used to walking places.

by Anonymousreply 31July 29, 2023 8:38 PM

That guy who went viral for trashing Paris didn't understand what the city was about in the first place. Bitching about "no activities here," but the point of Paris is to take it slow and savor the simple life. Go to cafes, eat good food, drink wine. People-watch, the stylish Parisians.

He put very American expectations into France.

by Anonymousreply 32July 29, 2023 8:45 PM

R23 please elaborate

by Anonymousreply 33July 29, 2023 8:47 PM

I went to Italy last year for 10 days Turin /Milan /Venice - by the second day I was looking at apartment listings in real estate office windows and trying to figure if I can ditch the USA after my mother dies.

I live in NYC - so Turin is cheaper and has plenty charming streets to walk and cafes to read a book in once I’m retired. I’ll probably get priced out of Manhattan anyway and Turin feels like a better option than Philly. The quality of life in Europe kicks ass in so many ways I can deal with no ice.

by Anonymousreply 34July 29, 2023 9:37 PM

I backpacked Europe in the early 2000s and the kids with backpacks were literally everywhere. I’ve been in Europe the last few weeks, though, and the number of backpackers I’ve seen is nill. I suspect most young people from the US and Canada are now traveling to Asia or South America because Europe has gotten so expensive. And those that do travel to Europe end up with sky high expectations because of how much they’re spending.

by Anonymousreply 35July 29, 2023 9:52 PM

America is designed to support work. Europe is designed to support living a decent life.

The problem is that Americans expect the same experience as living in the United States whenever and wherever they travel.

You can't really blame us.

[quote] I thought Italy was turning too conservative for you ultra-liberal DLers?

Have you met the average American?

We can barely be bothered with our own politics, much less with politics of foreign countries.

Dataloungers are much more politically active than the average American.

I can pretty much guarantee that the people traveling to Italy have no clue that Giorgia Meloni is a right-wing Nazi.

All they care about are the pretty buildings and the good food.

by Anonymousreply 45July 29, 2023 10:32 PM

I hope to go to Europe in the next few years but I really do NOT want to go to London or Paris, which probably makes me crazy. I mean, maybe at some point on a subsequent trip when I have a better feel for the country, but I want to go to a less touristy area.

I realize that's unusual but that's always been what I enjoy - sort of being somewhere and living as the locals do. A little dash of touristy activity (checking out architecture) is fine, but I also just want to walk through the neighborhoods.

by Anonymousreply 93July 30, 2023 1:51 AM

by Anonymousreply 94July 30, 2023 2:01 AM

Just in Europe, Dear r64?

R74 and r80, Your posts are so vague as to be meaningless.

R74, You definitely imply that, by having " a lot of variety" while not resembling "American" beach towns, that the latter have no or little variety. Do you realize that the US has Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf of Mexico coastlines? That the Oregon coast doesn't resemble Florida's Gulf coast, e.g.? And nor does Maine. And what, is it a competition?

R80, I'll bet it's mainly Euros/Brits fleeing Greek fires right about now. Why didn't THEY go to Scandinavia? Maybe because they go to "the same 5-10 places": Ibiza; Costa Del Sol; Corfu; Brighton; Blackpool; Dalmatia; etc.

R91, Care to be more specific? Do you think Dresden or Rothenburg-ob-Der-Tauber or Coventry or London should not have been rebuilt and restored? Is that what you call "sanitized"? Should a bloody guillotine be set up in Paris, or a head on a pike on Tower Bridge? Should Dunkirk and Waterloo and Stalingrad and the Normandy beaches be strewn with rotted corpses?

Just WTH do you MEAN??

One CAN visit Dachau and Auschwitz. Having been to the former, I can state unequivocally that one would need to be quite the ghoul to want to see it less "sanitized."

Finally, you have no idea, just some assumptions, about where Americans travel. We are quite familiar with Frommer, Fodor's, Off the Beaten Path, Michelin Green Guides, and Rick Steves! Plus a little-known research tool called "the Internet."

R88, Bring it on! Footpads on the floor! Unisex!

R93, IMO, you would be making a gigantic mistake. London is its neighborhoods. "The man who is tired of London is tired of life (Dr. Samuel Johnson)."

Can't say I understand you, r94. I'd move to Lucerne, Annecy, Stratford, Salisbury, Wells, Eze, Monaco, Bruges, the Isle of Wight, and more!

I can assure you that there are public toilets in the 45+ countries in Europe. But if you took that attitude with you I’d be tempted to send you in the wrong direction.

by Anonymousreply 106July 30, 2023 3:43 AM

[quote] THERE ARE NO FUCKING PUBLIC TOILETS!!!!

Yes, people pay to use the toilet. Which means that those facilities are cleaned frequently and maintained nicely.

Hell, some of those places have toilet cubes that are sprayed and sanitized automatically **between uses**.

We hardly have public facilities here in the States and many places have facilities that are either not maintained, are unsuitable for human use, or are magnets for homeless people/drug users et al.

by Anonymousreply 116July 30, 2023 6:07 AM

Gee, I wish I'd realized how awful Europe is. I just returned from Austria a few days ago and thought I had a wonderful time in a beautiful place. Guess I just don't know any better.

R102, Ever been to NYC? Good luck.

by Anonymousreply 119July 30, 2023 7:08 AM

R98, Perhaps you can learn to converse in English better. We don't say "in USA"; it's "in the USA" (preferably just "US"). Or at least refrain from the ad hominem approach.

I've never heard Nice and Cannes, Miami and Honolulu, called "beach towns," but whatever.

But you're the expert, so I will defer to your forthcoming examples of the continental differences specifically relating to the actual beach experience. I don't need you to tell me the differences among the general cultures of France, Italy, Monaco, etc. and the US ---I've traveled extensively there and here.

Just the beaches.

by Anonymousreply 120July 30, 2023 7:34 AM

You know, there are other places in Europe besides the tourist traps of France, Spain, and Italy. Norway is wonderful, and since it isn’t run by southern Europeans with a penchant for corruption, combined with the fact that it’s not overrun with tourists with no imagination, it’s quite nice.

by Anonymousreply 121July 30, 2023 8:05 AM

R121 it just goes to show you that American tourists are looking for history and culture, not just nature.

Scandinavia and the Northern countries have beautiful scenery, but the weather isn't ideal (especially for Summer tourists), and there isn't a lot of interesting architecture there either. Not to mention the food is underwhelming.

France, Spain, Italy and Greece may be corrupt now, but they have some of the most beautiful art, architecture, beaches, and food in the entire world.

There's a reason why they're such big tourist destinations. It's not just a random thing.

by Anonymousreply 122July 30, 2023 9:25 AM

R122 You are wrong about the weather. Summertime in southern Europe is a sweltering nightmare. Even in Oslo it can be too hot. Food, it’s a personal taste. But in northern Norway in summer you have 24 hour sun and nice cool weather. And make no mistake, as dumb and shallow as many Americans are, you can bet your ass that many go to France and Spain and Italy just because “everyone else does.”

by Anonymousreply 123July 30, 2023 9:33 AM

R122, I think the French would seriously object to you lumping them with the “Club Med countries” with regards to institutionalised corruption. And so does Transparency International (which, by the way, ranks France as less corrupt than the US!!).

by Anonymousreply 124July 30, 2023 9:53 AM

[quote] I think the French would seriously object to you lumping them with the “Club Med countries” with regards to institutionalised corruption

Denial is a fucking river in Egypt.

The French government is corrupt as fuck, whether they want to admit it or not.

It's just that same old fucked up French attitude that they're better than everyone else, when they're really not.

And yeah, their streets still smell like PISS and France is indeed all HYPE.

Im European and have traveled to Paris, Milan, Amsterdam, London, etc. and also US cities several times. Last time in Paris, I stayed at a hostel with 11 other girls in my room. The showers were spotless, it was clean and the staff was very helpful. It's also good to check websites like booking.com for special offers and real reviews by real people. I do it every time I travel and neve fell on my face since I use it. For me, the US feels intimidating (I've been there last in the aughts). German cities have good and bad corners but when I read the threads on the DL alone, it makes me think twice about visiting the US again (like blaming victims of crimes that it was their fault for looking at someone funny or walking alone in a city or an area or being in a city at all.) The last time in NYC I stayed with a good friend in Harlem in a tiny appartement. (He's Hispanic, most of his friends are too, we went out a lot and had a great time.) I often visit friends or family when I travel (Even if I book a hotel). It changes everything. I always have a list of things I must visit and for the rest, I'm very open to suggestions. I really don't know. If people are disappointed by Paris or London or any European City they should probably not have influencers as a source. I'm not reading Harry Potter and expect England to have flying cars either.

Yup. And "influencers" are generally petty, vapid cunts.

They're trend and style chasers - they have to find places that are the "it" places, but not TOO "it" or too well known - it has to be an up and coming vibe so companies will ask them to visit, pay for their travel and lodging, etc.

To be any place heralded by an influencer is to be in a place filled with poseurs and twats.

by Anonymousreply 169July 30, 2023 3:37 PM

R137 I absolutely loved Austria and I was, as somebody mentioned, employing sarcasm. Is English your second or third language? I'm asking because I realize that it's difficult to discern sarcasm in an acquired language.

I was pretending to be sad that I didn't know before I went that I would have an awful time in Europe, because I had a great time.

And absolutely no problem finding AC (more expensive hotels and stores tend to have them in the cities) ice cubes (just ask), or vegetables (no idea how anybody could not be able to locate those). I've only been to a few European countries so far, but all that I've visited have been charming.

by Anonymousreply 170July 30, 2023 3:42 PM

90% of Americans who travel to Europe in the summer are 1) families and 2) students. For the most part, families are doing this because they are keeping up with the Joneses ("Oh, we went to LAKE COEMOE" ... it was FABULOUS" / "The TREAVEE FOUNTAIN WAS EPIC... Kaitly and I threw our coins in too!" / "Madysyn and Bronson just loved the NEOPOLITAN GELLAAAATOES") or are dumb sheep following stupid TikTok traveler influencers. They "ONLY DO ITALY."

They join hordes of families and students from around the world who are the same. Eastern Europeans, especially Russians, are equally as boorish. At least the Chinese are not out in full force yet because of the situation at home.

Just fly out Labor Day weekend like we do and you still have the best of Europe before the weather starts to cool down in Oct.

r29 has definitely never been to Europe because if he had he would have had to leave from an airport in the US and land at one in Europe and he would have never said what he said about infrastructure.

I just traveled at 323 KPH from Quimper to Paris on the TGV in coach that would be tantamount to first class anywhere in the US in 3.5 hours that would have taken 10 hours on Amtrak in a train car that smells like feet and desperation. Then I took Italo from Florence to Rome going 263 KPH in 1.25 hours. It would take Amtrak at least four.

Yes, R82, and half of them have dangerous levels of contaminants due to untreated sewage being dumped into these areas.

Europe is a wonderful place filled with enormous cultural, artistic, linguistic and ethnic diversity, and every single country, no matter how small, has many impressive things to offer: architecture, impressive art, charm and majesty. Yes, there are some very negative things in Europe, but many of these will never be seen by, nor affect the experiences of tourists. Personally, I have never been anywhere in Europe where you cannot go to a market or a greengrocer to find vegetables, or else you could go to a supermarket, which exist everywhere. Moreover, no one has the obligation to provide anything to you for free - if you want ice and water, do buy them. There are plenty of shops where you can get both.

Of course, if you think that Disneyland attractions are impressive representations of period architecture (of which the US has VERY few examples, as your cultural legacy is incredibly poor) , Olive Garden franchises are the very height of culinary sophistication and you cannot walk anywhere, because your cities are deliberately designed to be immense concrete monstrosities that require a car, then it's possible for you to be surprised at how different things can be in the civilized world. Also, no one owes you admiration just by being American, which isn't some carte blanche to do anything you want and make unreasonable demands.

Sadly, Europe is being ruined by American political and economic impositions, not to mention hordes of trashy, functionally illiterate whales who think they're special 'because Ah got money!', and execrable ragheads who want to invade us.

Hype and BRAWLS!

[quote] Massive brawl breaks out on popular Spanish tourist 'sin street'

A massive brawl broke out on a popular tourist street in Spain, with drinkers smashing chairs and bottles against each other as police tried to stop the violence.

The fight broke out in the early hours of July 23 on a street known as Pecat (or "sin") Street that features prominently in the Catalonian city of Sitges' nightlife.

The cause of the fight remains unknown despite an investigation, but the leading explanation is that a disagreement with a bouncer quickly escalated.

Video footage captured by local outlet CEN showed the fight breaking out as men started hitting each other with barstools, glass bottles and metal bars, among other things they could find within arm’s reach.

The violence lasted for about a minute before those involved tried to flee the scene, The Mirror UK reported. Around 30 to 40 people were allegedly involved in the brawl.

The street, officially known as Primer de Maig Street, is lined with bars and restaurants. It serves as a popular destination for British tourists, but it remains unknown whether any of those involved in starting the fight or escalating it were British.

Two cops suffered dislocated joints, and another had cuts after a glass bottle hit them. No arrests were made, and no suspect was identified as the instigator, The Sun reported.

Medical professionals who tended to any wounded individuals said all injuries were minor.

Catalan’s Mossos d’Esquadra, or the region’s main police force, opened an investigation into the incident and similar ones in nearby towns over the weekend.

A fight at another British tourist hot spot broke out when a group of young people refused to pay the entry fee for a nightclub, and a bouncer tried to turn them away. The club’s staff fought back when the youths tried to throw glass bottles at the bouncer and force their way in.

The suspects fled as soon as police showed up, but authorities arrested one individual, an 18-year-old, who went to the hospital with an injury on his face.

R175 more like conservatives would rather help out the home economy.

Another reason why liberals are considered un-American.

More and more people (especially in this social media age) are starting to notice that Democrats only care about foreign affairs and illegal immigrants.

The only Americans they seem concerned about are black (13%) and/or trans (1%) but only on a superficial level (i.e., 'woke' brownie points)

This will only hurt them when the country becomes more conservative and nationalistic in this decade.

[quote]Only fags and liberals go there.

[quote]Unless they're politicians or Christian missionaries or in the military, conservatives tend to stay stateside, including Alaska, Hawaii, and the Caribbean.

Hence it is liberals who are mainly responsible for the "ugly American" stereotype abroad.

R213, Quimper! See, that's what I mean. Only someone with some learning and culture would even have heard of Quimper, let alone have visited (I must assume you bought some items of the same name?). I found Brittany beautiful, with the stark stone cottages of Locronan, the walled Concarneau, the beach of Dinard (I still have the tiny seashells I found), the half-timbered leaning buildings of Dinan, and....the sugar cakes!

And that's just one region of France! Whoever said one can see Europe in a week is mad! Simply cuckoo! 🤪

R223, Your "Hence" follows an unsupported assertion.

Liberals are Liberals because we've been educated. We are hardly the sort in general to be all jingoistic "USA! USA!" in attitude abroad. But put the villagers from The Villages on a tour bus, and now you've got your whiny, complaining, can't wait to get home, "Ugly Americans."

Or you might have the ones who prefer to cruise, observing from a sanitized distance, with short stops to "experience" Europe for a few hours per port.

Well, as the kids say these days, iykyk.

Being in American living in Europe, no matter what you say, there is nothing about the worst of Europe that is worse than the worst of America. You can post all of the Oliver Twist-esque pickpocketing and barstool bashes you want. Violence on those levels may occur, but America is a violent country, aggressive and at this point in history very mean spirited.

[quote] Quimper! See, that's what I mean. Only someone with some learning and culture would even have heard of Quimper

When I was sixteen back in the 90s I did a host family thing for the summer with a family in France. They lived in Lille but spent the summer in Bretagne. I hadn't seen them since 1991. I went back for the first time in 32 years to visit and it was amazing. But this is the only way I know Quimper. Thei tiny vacation home they rented was in Locutudy. But my host brother who has become somewhat of a success in the field of business he is in, bought a lovely family home in the exact same area, so my husband and I stayed with them.

There is a small town called Pont-L'Abbé. I was actually SHOCKED, shocked by how urbane it was. I was expecting blue collar costal town fisherman-realness. If you are so inclined, it is a Designer Fag haven. There were tons of small boutiques dedicated to interior design, furniture, local pottery, restaurants, foodie markets with ingredients that would be 5x as much in the states. The best part about it was outside of my husband and I, all the tourist were French people vacationing there. I didn't hear any other language. It's like a secret little enclave just for locals. The look is very New England, Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet. It was cool that this place isn't on anyone's radar. That is why I was so surprised about how stylish and modern the items for sale were. I could totally see NYC, Hamptons, Hudson Valley queens going crazy there. You could smell the money in the community if this small town had enough of it to support all the stores selling these custom, handcrafted designer items without any international tourism.

I LOVED Paris. I don’t know what people were talking about regarding inconvenience. In the Latin Quarter there were grocers with beautiful melons etc on every block or two, and if one wanted to stick with prepackaged food like sandwiches, chips, etc., there’s a chain similar to CVS within ten minutes of anywhere on foot.

I’m overweight , and I was able to walk all over just fine, and I climbed all stairs to the Arch de Triomphe. In general, It is a lot of walking at various inclines, but I felt great. I can see how people there stay fit naturally. I really loved it, but I don’t follow influencers. I’m just so grateful I got to see such splendor.

The only part in Paris I thought it smelled like piss was on Ile San Louis, right of the Latin Quarter, it's infamous for men (and some women) to take their bathrooms break there, especially after drinking...but I will say, that was piss smell on a whole other level...unbreathable.

My only problem with Paris were some of the metro stations, many seemed to either go on forever and it felt like you were constantly inside them, or they were so old you'd fear they would cave in (many NYC subways stations share the problem) but my biggest issue with them was the constant police checking you to see if you had your subway stub and being fined 60 fucking euros once because I didn't have mine (never mind I showed them the 4 fresh unused subway tickets that I had just purchased, they still made me pay because I lost the stub, fils de pute).

Anyway, the metro is a pos there. And I was there for 3 months, so it's not just 1/2 bad experiences.

Despite that Paris remains my favorite big city in the world.

by Anonymousreply 262August 1, 2023 4:21 AM

Oh, r231, can it. I'm ultra-Liberal in my politics and well-educated, and I was always in awe no matter which European country I was visiting, and I've been to most, including Andorra and the rest of the "postage stamp" countries.

I met a matador still in his suit of lights after his Madrid corrida, because I was getting his hotel room next. I met and had my picture taken with Romani and their "pet" brown bear on a road in the former Yugoslavia. I stood on a Pamplona balcony 15' above running bulls, and later shared dinner with a Basque family. I stayed with a German family in Mainz and exchanged Christmas cards for a long time with a couple from then-East Germany. I saw Neanderthal cave wall paintings and the modern Pompidou Center. I met a Normandy farmer who showed me an American Airman's WW II cap that he kept in gratitude.

I've been to many, many cathedrals, the major art museums, and plenty of famous people's gravesites (Churchill in Bladon, Marx in Highgate, Galileo in Florence, Ferdinand and Isabella in Granada, Westminster Abbey, Caen, and so on). I've seen the Bayeux Tapestry and the gardens of Giverny. The Matterhorn, Jungfrau, and Reichenbach Falls. Lake Luzerne and Lago di Garda. The remnants of Empire in Rome, Sirmione, and Paestum. The Loire chateaux and Ludwig's castles. Norwegian fjords and Plitvice waterfalls. The Changing of the Guard in London, Copenhagen, and Monaco.

And everywhere in England including the Isle of Wight, Scotland to Loch Ness, plus a bit o' Dublin. The homes of Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Keats, Hardy, and "221-B" Baker Street. I met Julie Christie in the West End.

If all the above sounds in any way "condescending" to you, then I must tell you that that word does not mean what you think it means, for I was, am, and always will be enamored of the myriad delights of Europe.

R270 - I am very much an American and proud to be one born in the great state of Ohio although I lived in NYC for 26 years in the Chelsea area. Saw Tower II go down with my own eyes.

R275 that is a bit of the pot calling the kettle black. Have you looked at the state of America now on the verge a of a Civil war with the recent indictment of a former president on attempts to overthrow the democracy? That my friend is a very dangerous path. What people don't understand about Italy is that it takes forever to change anything in the government. It's not like the United States where in a year's time a branch of the Gov't can overturn women's rights in a blink of an eye, or work to effectively erase human rights with one decision.

The romanticizing of Italy comes from a combination of being an American citizen in a foreign country. This isn't my country. I don't have a say. As selfish as it may sound, I am released from the need of fighting to constantly make things better or the depression over the fact that I can't. I am free to enjoy my life which is pretty much unaffected by whatever measures the government is attempting to pass. My gay marriage is recognized here as a real marriage. It definitely doesn't feel as dark as the United States now. There isn't the vitriol, the aggression, the cynicism and overall resignation to feeling helpless. When Italians complain about their current problems it feels like listening to an adolescent complain about homework. I always think, man you guys have no idea what the pressure of real adult problems feel like. Try living your life with the fear that you can possibly gunned down anywhere - that life isn't sacred anymore. Or try living under the idea that no matter how hard you work, you will never be able to afford a home, or the cost of your future, that at any moment, with one hardship you can become destitute. The pressure of ignoring your own health out of fear of what it may cost you or the time it may take away from you making more money to just live. Those are pressures that I experienced personally in the States that they don't live with here. You can feel the tension over there in the US all the way over here.

by Anonymousreply 276August 2, 2023 9:00 AM

Good Luck and Good Life to you, r276.

The USA! USA! is done. Turn the oven to OFF.

by Anonymousreply 277August 2, 2023 10:18 AM

LMAO, people have been predicting the US’s descent into civil war since Trump was elected. Yet somehow, we’re still ascendant while Europe lurches rightward in country after country, battles record inflation as an economic block, and slowly realizes the generous social benefits that allow them to think they’re morally better than Americans, aren’t sustainable.

Meanwhile, while the US is supposed to be in it’s 6th or 7th year of a civil war, the European content has hosted 1 outright war…while trying to prevent a few more from brewing (Serbia and Kosovo, a Bosnian civil war).

Europeans fail to acknowledge the U.S. was established—and became what it is today—because Europeans fled their homelands. The U.S. was always intended to be just like Europe, and it’s not the insult people think it is when our differences are highlighted.

by Anonymousreply 278August 2, 2023 12:31 PM

You're way off and a little too impressed with yourself anecdotally, R278.

by Anonymousreply 279August 2, 2023 1:35 PM

The crazy fact about what R278 points out is that there have been more gun deaths in the United States since the beginning of 2022 than ALL of Europe combined, even including countries at War. United States citizens have murdered more numbers of their own civilians than an entire continent with wars raging. That shit is scary. So you may not call it a Civil War r278 but the number of deaths there suggest something off is definitely going on.

by Anonymousreply 280August 2, 2023 2:01 PM

R279 and R280 clearly don't like to hear the truth about Europe.

R278 told the truth.

So R280 deflected and R279 hurled insults.

Neither of which changes the fact that R278 told the truth.

by Anonymousreply 281August 2, 2023 3:41 PM

Western Europe is so tired.

by Anonymousreply 282August 2, 2023 3:53 PM

No one is saying that R278 didn't tell a version of the truth. I am just pointing out R278 is akin to Bill Cosby telling young men to pull their pants up and stop sagging. Cosby probably should have focused on not raping women. Maybe the United States should focus on all the gun violence there instead of resting on its laurels and tales of yore that don't exist anymore. It's the richest country in the world with proportionately the worst education system for its citizens. The country doesn't really care about its citizens and we know this now, and the citizens really don't care about the country as a whole. If 20 babies can be gunned down IN their classroom, their teachers with them, and nothing changes just a lot of sackcloths and ashes - what further proof do you need? Unless you're just hopelessly obtuse or naive.

Life in the States is tough and expensive for all the wrong reasons. People shouldn't have to decide between food and medicine. Say what you will about Europe, but at least they have this very very basic human right figured out. Most of the First World does. And it's not like the United State's can't figure it out. The fact they they just don't give a fuck and hope their citizens die off early after they've contributed whatever they can financially during their working lives is much more sinister.

There is a compassion and a civil engagement and a general respect still here among the citizens in Europe. You can disagree with someone without needing to destroy them. It's what I miss most about the America I grew up in. There are still lines you don't cross, people you don't harm. Not everything is fair play for the sake of aggrandizement. There is a manic sadness and cynicism in the States right now. I know you all feel it.

by Anonymousreply 283August 2, 2023 4:11 PM

Long rant short, the premise of this thread is that "Europe is nothing but hype!" I just want to know R281 what is the hype that Europe is not living up to? Because as I see it, having spent most of my life in the United States, the American Dream that it sells itself on is becoming nothing by hype to a growing number of its citizens who will never realize it. How ownership (the cornerstone of the American Dream) in Italy is about 75% whereas the United States its around 64% and declining.

by Anonymousreply 284August 2, 2023 4:27 PM

R278 it’s “economic bloc”. A block is something you walk around.

by Anonymousreply 285August 2, 2023 5:26 PM

R286 Europeans love Americans. Just not the ones you describe - uncultured gluttons. But would anyone? Even Americans don't like Americans like that.

by Anonymousreply 287August 2, 2023 6:14 PM

Europeans love American money.

by Anonymousreply 288August 2, 2023 6:18 PM

But I adore YOU, R266! 😘

I KNOW I went way overboard, but the ignorant need details, n'est-ce pas? And once I got started (don't get me started).....🤭

Yep, I'm a Mary, r265! Well, not actually, but I am....😎

by Anonymousreply 289August 2, 2023 7:18 PM

[quote]Europeans love American money.

They love that too R288. But living here I do realize that, Italians at least, really do like Americans. They love our popular culture. They love our music, our movies.. Italian music popular music isn't that really good unless it is parroting American Music. The movies and televisions shows can be quite good though. There is a natural reciprocity between America and Italy - we've helped them out immensely over their years and our culture is probably more influenced by Italian (outside the obvious brits) than any other European country - from food to fashion to luxury cars to every major city in America having a Little Italy.

Actually it was leaving America and experiencing how we are seen that gave me a new appreciation for being American. They admire our optimism a lot - that tomorrow is another day and anything can happen. It's strange, no matter the race, I can spot my people here. There is just a friendliness, quick to smile, quick to hug - there is a light in our eyes. I do find that comforting. When a culture is saddled with 3,000 years of history, the idea that one single person can move the cultural needle doesn't really exist. So as Americans the idea that one person can make a huge difference is really desirable to them. This is the main reason a lot of young Italians want to leave because they don't feel they can really test, prove themselves in a culture that isn't as open to the possibility of change.

Italians also really appreciate our management skills, our "To-Do" lists and that we actually get shit done. An Italian business meeting is two hours of everybody pontificating and complaining with no real issue being presented and nothing ever changing then breaking for lunch. They love to hear themselves talk and hear their own voice. Multi-tasking isn't a thing here - the "while I swing by the dry cleaners, I am going to stop at the drug store to pick up that prescription." The universe seems to work against the idea of you doing more than one thing at a time here. Somehow, some way, it just won't happen. When I think about going to a store, I first have to remember if they are open on that day, then I have to remember what time they are closed for lunch. And then I remember, oh shit, it's August, they are closed until September.

More so than just American money, businesses love how freely and willingly Americans will part with it. You tell Americans a price, they don't complain, they pay it. Americans have a very difficult time NOT tipping at restaurants. I'm like no, it's real, you don't have to leave anything, it is perfectly OK. And every American is like, I just have to leave something, - please let me leave something. I work with American clients here sometimes and it's always funny to me how I have to explain to Italians, no, it's ok, they will pay it. Sometimes I am at the end of a five minute conversation about how something won't work out only to realize the Italian is just assuming no one would ever pay the $15 fee to make it happen.

^ fuck that's long, sorry...

anyway, part two.. [quote]Europeans love American money.

I have learned spending money is something Americans take on as a National duty. Remember one of the main things about ending covid restrictions in the states was we have to get 'em out shopping again, driving the economy. We are born and bred consumers. Even if you don't have two nickels to rub together, it's our duty not to look like we don't. Charge it. That is how we are raised. It took a while for me to adjust to the fact that I can actually leave the house and come back without something in hand, that it's ok. In America we always get a coffee, or a paper, or a magazine, a new t-shirt, something! There is no reason to go to a store unless you're their to buy something - browse a book store and come back with a paperback you'll never read. Any business would love a natural born and bred consumer who WANTS to spend money.

Unfortunately the "Ugly American" attitude is shifting from one of entitlement to defensive. I see more Americans coming with the attitude of "they aren't going to like me" and blame everything on the idea that no one likes Americans. It's probably just best in either case to come with the attitude that not everything is about you.

by Anonymousreply 291August 3, 2023 5:07 AM

R291 = Canadian. Post reeks of passive-aggressiveness.

by Anonymousreply 292August 3, 2023 11:07 AM

I love being in the EU, but it ain't for everyone. I took a ten year break, but ended up moving back again. Americans are really good at marketing, "being cool"/setting an image and making money, but it's just too cruel of a society for me. Obviously, it isn't perfect over here, but it is better overall.

by Anonymousreply 293August 3, 2023 12:28 PM

Different strokes for different folks

by Anonymousreply 294August 3, 2023 12:37 PM

R292 = the defensiveness referenced in R291

by Anonymousreply 295August 3, 2023 12:44 PM

Every country has its rednecks. Probably most of the population of every G7 or Western country is closer to provincial, small minded, self-interested and clueless when on vacation. These are not uniquely American failings. Canada's got 'em, France has got 'em, Australia has tons of 'em, etc. etc. etc. Most people are OK, they just live lives in small worlds due to economics and it reflects in their view of.... everything.

America's dominance is real - but it's a double edged sword, which some on DL can't acknowledge (perhaps don't actually understand.) Your cultural dominance means the myth of the American dream also seduces people in other countries. We fall for it too. So when we criticize it's in part because as outsiders we see sooner how you're squandering the advantages you've got and how there's far fewer advantages and far less opportunity for all than the myth deceives us into believing. (And you haven't noticed the Chinese are moving into your gated community.)

Few people truly hate America, but I bet massive numbers, if they thought about it, would admit to being massively disappointed by it. The Trumpy, deluded Madonna entitlement is tedious. Threads like this, if not a troll effort, are disappointing. Many of the attitudes on DL toward other countries are a real let down because DL should be smarter than the average Ohioan. But if it's some comfort to shit all over Europe, fill your boots.

by Anonymousreply 296August 3, 2023 12:57 PM

We all sat around and ate free foreign crap, then vomited.

by Anonymousreply 297August 3, 2023 2:25 PM

There aren't enough all you can eat comfort food buffets in Europe.

by Anonymousreply 298August 3, 2023 2:39 PM

Anywhere people get along, live in peace and beaut, have kindness, that's the place I want to be.

by Anonymousreply 299August 3, 2023 11:19 PM

R299, then check out this guys post about buying $1 homes in Sicily. Although he says overall, Spain is a better investment because they have better infastructure, and for him he wants his kids to learn Spanish - a more useful language. He likes the people in Italy and buys there mostly because he enjoys the way of life and building a community there.

I listen to several people talking about the cheap homes in Italy but his discussion of the process and what to really expect is pretty comprehensive. He also has a Youtube Channel.

This is the kind of shit the Americans are doing on the Camino Sanitago this summer. Of course it's a bunch of aging millennials having their girlboss eat-pray-love saga.

by Anonymousreply 302August 4, 2023 9:35 AM

R302 Camino Santiago has got to be one of the whitest things I've ever seen. Typical entitled white urbanites "finding themselves" and truly "magical."

Seems about right.

by Anonymousreply 303August 4, 2023 2:35 PM

At R302 I get what the guy is saying, but for a man making a "pilgrimage" to some Catholic holy site, he sure does seem angry.

And swearing quite a bit.

I mean, CHILL.

Yes those Karens are being annoying, but he shouldn't let what they're doing, ruin his own experience of the place.

by Anonymousreply 304August 4, 2023 3:17 PM

[quote]This is the kind of shit the Americans are doing on the Camino Sanitago this summer.

What on earth makes you assume those people “who drive in from France in their fucking campers” are American?

Europeans can be every bit as vapid and selfish as tourists from anywhere else. Just look at all the vandalism incidents this summer in Italy. I just read about a German knocking down some ancient statue, and there were stories about a Bulgarian and Swiss tourists defacing the Colosseum.

by Anonymousreply 305August 4, 2023 3:46 PM

r305, I thought it was a Brit kid defacing the Colosseum?

by Anonymousreply 306August 4, 2023 4:22 PM

Wasn't it a Heathen Turk from Constantinople?

by Anonymousreply 307August 4, 2023 4:37 PM

That is interesting r290. Maybe I should move there. I've never been much of a "doer," more of a procrastinator, based in part on that pessimism/cynicism that says "why bother, it will probably just fail anyway." Of course, moving there would take energy, so really, I'll probably just stay in this vicious circle.

by Anonymousreply 308August 4, 2023 5:02 PM

Please move there, R308.

The less of you whiny cunts we have in this country, the better.

We have enough crybabies, as it is.

by Anonymousreply 309August 4, 2023 5:05 PM

Ain't nobody crying r309. And ain't nobody worshiping your bullshit earnest doing for the sake of doing either.

by Anonymousreply 310August 4, 2023 5:09 PM

[quote] And ain't nobody worshiping your bullshit earnest doing for the sake of doing either.

Can someone please translate this?

It makes no sense in English.

by Anonymousreply 311August 4, 2023 5:13 PM

[quote]I thought it was a Brit kid defacing the Colosseum?

The first guy, in June, is a Bulgarian-born 27-year-old, currently living in Bristol, England. He was identified via a video recorded by another tourist.

The second, in July, is a 17-year-old Swiss girl. She was apprehended at the scene.

The third, the very next day, is a 17-year-old male student from Germany. He was also arrested at the scene.

All facing potential fines of €15,000 ($16,850) and up to five years in jail.

[quote]"Europe is nothing but hype!"

I agree. Never got Euphoria's hype.

by Anonymousreply 313August 4, 2023 6:34 PM

The teens don't deserve jail. The 27 year old is old enough to know better but maybe community service. Required completion of art history and classical history courses for all 3.

by Anonymousreply 314August 4, 2023 6:38 PM

I wonder if younger people being raised on social media will start having this feeling about more and more experiences. Everything is so rose-colored on Instagram that it’s impossible for the actual experiences to live up to the hype.

by Anonymousreply 315August 4, 2023 7:14 PM

Was it any different in the past? Hand tinted postcards and travelogue movies about American schoolgirls falling in love in Rome.

by Anonymousreply 316August 4, 2023 7:19 PM

Then don’t go. Problem solved. Next…

by Anonymousreply 317August 4, 2023 7:26 PM

Well, Rome was lovely once a rich or bourgeois kid made it there.

by Anonymousreply 318August 4, 2023 8:09 PM

R316, "American...girls falling in love in [Europe]" exist outside of "travelogue movies"! For example:

Grace Kelly.

Meghan Markle.

Linda Eastman.

Jerry Hall.

Barbara Bach.

r315, when I was in Mallorca, there was a young Asian woman who was running around and taking pictures of herself everywhere, not even looking at what she was taking photos of. Meanwhile, my friend and I were taking photos of doors, tiles, buildings, plants, streets, etc.

I was there last year when the final game was occuring. The neighborhoods of firenze each have their own team and they march through the streets to the stadium set up at Santa Croce. They dudes beat the shit out of each other shirtless while throwing around a ball for some reason. IT's so violent that they had to ban convicted criminals from taking part after a 50 man brawl broke out in 2007. It's a a sport goes back to the 1600s, just in Florence, that the entire city turns out for.
