They were originally for skate punks.
When Did SKECHERS Become Shoes for Old People?
by Anonymous | reply 66 | August 1, 2023 4:35 AM |
The day they wanted to make some money. Plus skate punks get old too.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | July 27, 2023 9:40 PM |
You’ve answered your own question, OP.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | July 27, 2023 9:40 PM |
I've been wearing them for awhile, OP -- but now I AM old.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | July 27, 2023 9:41 PM |
They're freaking comfy.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | July 27, 2023 9:42 PM |
A lot of former skate punks are over 50 now
by Anonymous | reply 6 | July 27, 2023 9:48 PM |
They are amazing to walk around in all day and not get blisters. They are so ugly though which is too bad.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 27, 2023 9:49 PM |
I like them and they're not all ugly. I think old people like them because they don't have shoelaces and you can just slip them on.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 27, 2023 9:51 PM |
I'm a snob and think leather shoes or boots look better than any sneaker-like shoes. I think Skechers must use some kind of memory foam inside because the comfort is extremely good.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 27, 2023 9:54 PM |
Eldergay here. I wear them because they're amazingly comfortable even if I wear them all day. As for the look, well, I've seen uglier, like those velcro boats that just scream "one foot in the grave."

[quote]When Did SKECHERS Become Shoes for Old People?
Probably around the time that woman who was fired as co-host of "Dancing With the Stars" started doing TV commercials for them.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 27, 2023 10:06 PM |
Didn't they have a resurgence with Gen Z? They like that big chunky white sneaker look.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 27, 2023 10:06 PM |
They’re insanely tacky and worn by those of low breeding
by Anonymous | reply 13 | July 27, 2023 10:12 PM |
They are comfortable but very clunky and chunky looking. And they have so many models which basically look the same.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 27, 2023 10:14 PM |
What R2 said.
Everyone on DL posts references like this thinking it's still 2006 or 1994 or 1981. It's 2023. The original "skate punks" are pushing 70 now.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | July 27, 2023 10:21 PM |
My mom loves them. She’s 78.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 27, 2023 10:22 PM |
It's definitely a comfort thing.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | July 27, 2023 10:23 PM |
It's the 'S'
by Anonymous | reply 18 | July 27, 2023 10:25 PM |
Sschetchers sounds good
by Anonymous | reply 19 | July 27, 2023 10:25 PM |
I was buying Nike sneakers for at least 20 years. About 15 years ago while shopping for new sneakers I see Skechers and on impulse decided to try them on and they were a better fit and significantly more comfortable than Nike. The Skechers Vassell Casual was ideal for me. However they were almost impossible to find during COVID due to supply chain situation, but now they are available again. Unfortunately they don't feel and fit as good as previously and they degrade much faster. They are obviously making them cheaper. So now I'm looking for a better option.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | July 28, 2023 12:16 AM |
Their market research must've told them that Boomers, Gen Xers (ie older consumers) won't pay anymore than around 100 bucks for sneakers 'cause that's where their price points hover around.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | July 28, 2023 3:01 AM |
Sneakers have gone to shit during the pandemic. Skechers and Merrell are crap now.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | July 28, 2023 3:20 PM |
Tony Romo enjoys Sketchers. They are as light as his loafers.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | July 28, 2023 3:49 PM |
Sneakers scream low class
by Anonymous | reply 24 | July 28, 2023 4:33 PM |
Martha Stewart does a convincing floor routine and lands by jumping into her Skechers! Yes, I know it's not really her.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | July 28, 2023 4:50 PM |
I have the chunky white sneakers and a few pairs of their slip-ons. So comfortable. All eldergays should try on a pair.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | July 28, 2023 4:53 PM |
Sorry. Always downmarket and tasteless.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | July 28, 2023 5:56 PM |
OP is a vicious liar! BITCH WHORE!!
by Anonymous | reply 29 | July 28, 2023 5:57 PM |
I don’t like chunky shoes so I go for “driving shoes” that are similar to sneakers but are more streamlined. They are also great for driving in especially a stick shift.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 28, 2023 8:43 PM |
I was once recovering from a foot injury and my doctor recommended them.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 28, 2023 8:47 PM |
Sketchers were a decent if prole shoe, and very affordably priced - until after covid, when they approximately doubled the retail prices of their shoes, charging as much as the competition. Now the lesser quality was no longer worth putting up with. And the sketchers shoes they sell at costco and sam's club got ridiculously ugly, with odd colors and designs, and a complete absence of laces and fasteners. Anybody want some band-aid color mesh slip ons with a chunky sole? In the past couple months for the first time I've seen Sam's Club discount shoes for clearance - because they're so ugly nobody wants them.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | July 28, 2023 9:06 PM |
i don't know
by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 28, 2023 9:07 PM |
I found they give terrible support in my 30s. I'm in my 50s now and won't wear cheap shoes like Sketchers anymore. There's a reason they were made for teens.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | July 28, 2023 9:12 PM |
I'm in my 20s and have some Memory Foam plain black Skechers. They're the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. No, they won't win any fashion shows but they're great for running errands in or just some plain casual life stuff. Can't wear Crocs because they literally destroy my toenails!
by Anonymous | reply 35 | July 28, 2023 9:30 PM |
I bought some beautiful Vans at Kohls in 2021 that I had to return. They weren't like my old ones at all. Terrible fit and literally scratched up my heel to bleeding. My ex had to give me tissues to cover up the bleeding LOL. So never going with Vans again. I've heard DC is more like how old school Vans were, will have to go to Journeys to find out.

Sorry, they're so comfortable, I don't give a fuck how downmarket they are.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | July 28, 2023 9:35 PM |
No laces to tie and they are durable. Have had pairs that last a decade or more .
by Anonymous | reply 38 | July 28, 2023 9:46 PM |
I’ve worn Puma sneakers for almost 30 years now. They are not made the same way they were even 5 years ago. I’d happily pay double the price to get the old quality back.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | July 30, 2023 1:36 PM |
i am all about my Y-3 Adidas. I am a shoe whore and have 6 pairs
by Anonymous | reply 40 | July 30, 2023 2:16 PM |
Yes, they have.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | July 30, 2023 2:30 PM |
I don’t know why but haven’t Vans become an old person shoe too? I was in a Vans store and a sales baby basically told me I was a little too “old” for their demographic. My at the time boyfriend somehow got me out of the store before I could open my mouth and I was so furious and started to tell him and he stopped me and he said “I know. I could see it coming. I knew exactly what you were about to say. I think I could even see your imaginary teleprompter for a second and I knew exactly where that was headed”.
Even though we don’t speak anymore, he was pretty good at reading me. Sometimes if we were out he’d just hand me a beer and a piece of chocolate and say “here, I got you this” before I even realized I was in a bad mood. He knew how to manage me like a was a big cat in a circus.

R42, Vans have had a resurgence in popularity among young people, R42. That doesn't make them old people shoes, although it is fine if older people wear them, since they've been popular since the early 1980s.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | July 30, 2023 6:11 PM |
I think Skechers grabbed a large part of the market with their early ads saying that walking in the shoes tightened butts.
They sold a lot and people saw how comfortable they were in spite of the company having to say there was no proof the shoes made your butt look good.
The designs are getting better, I'm a fan, have several pairs.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | July 30, 2023 6:50 PM |
I get them on sale at Beall's Outlet like most of my sneakers.
I suspect R13 will have a fit of apoplexy if he reads this.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | July 30, 2023 6:51 PM |
Vans came out in the early '80s, maybe the late '70s. They were a shoe for young people - specifically the surf / skateboard community. The checkerboard pattern is very distinct and people know exactly what you're wearing.
IMO, Vans are uncomfortable. I have wide feet and there's no give on the sides of the shoes.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | July 30, 2023 6:51 PM |
comfort
by Anonymous | reply 47 | July 30, 2023 6:55 PM |
R45 - I would guess R13 doesn't realize that "those" kind of people don't give a flying fuck about what anybody thinks of their style choices, least of all some nobody that isn't, and never will be, part of "their" crowd.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | July 30, 2023 6:59 PM |
Allbirds are great for comfort too , I wear mine to do all my errands.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | July 30, 2023 7:04 PM |
A good shoe should feel like you’re almost barefoot but comfortable. I don’t think anyone makes good shoes anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | July 30, 2023 8:52 PM |
They became old people shoes when they started marketing them toward old people.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | July 30, 2023 9:07 PM |
Remember when it was de rigueur for elderly ladies to wear these shoes?
by Anonymous | reply 54 | July 30, 2023 10:19 PM |
Do they still sell those shoes that look like gloves? Lol
by Anonymous | reply 55 | July 31, 2023 9:55 PM |
I can't believe we have people on here recommending Sketchers for elderly people. They have the worst support of any sneaker on the market. They're made for idiot teenagers, not old people. I'm 58 and wouldn't last 2 hours wearing these on hard pavement.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | July 31, 2023 10:55 PM |
No, R54, most of us are under 110.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | July 31, 2023 10:55 PM |
R56 needs to see a chiropodist.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | July 31, 2023 11:37 PM |
I buy a pair of slipons at WalMart for $14.00. They're probably made at the same factory. Super comfy.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | August 1, 2023 12:11 AM |
R58 I do see a podiatrist, who recommends never wearing crap shoes like Sketchers ever again. Thanks for your concern.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | August 1, 2023 12:16 AM |
This afternoon at the senior center Disco aerobics class Helen Bixley slipped on some chocolate Ensure spilled by that drunken Helen Slater! Luckily she was wearing her Skechers and was able to right herself before falling on her hip! Helen didn't even as much as pick up a paper towel to wipe up the mess! We have decided to exclude her from a road trip tomorrow to the casino

by Anonymous | reply 62 | August 1, 2023 1:29 AM |
Did you do oral?
by Anonymous | reply 63 | August 1, 2023 1:46 AM |
R56 thinks we're talking about sneakers.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | August 1, 2023 1:48 AM |
I bought a pair on clearance at a shoe store several years back and was amazed how much more comfortable they were than the British Knights and McGregors I'd been wearing previously. I've been buying that same model ever since.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | August 1, 2023 3:13 AM |
It's for old people stop fooling yourselves.
My 70 plus aunt and uncle wear sketchers They are not " former" skatepunks
