Nicole Kidman

Was she ever a great beauty?

by Anonymousreply 65July 31, 2023 4:14 AM

No.

by Anonymousreply 1July 26, 2023 10:06 PM

[quote] "No"

Agreed, R1. Thread closed.

by Anonymousreply 2July 26, 2023 10:08 PM

I have to admit, but in her youth and up to about 30 she was ugly, ugly but with the help of doctors I find her quite eloquent and she seems to possess an old Hollywood flair. IMHO.

I loved her in The Undoing. She has done some great work, again IMHO.

by Anonymousreply 3July 26, 2023 10:11 PM

She was cute when she was young and pretty as she got older...ever a great beauty?? No

by Anonymousreply 4July 26, 2023 10:15 PM

Even she admitted that she was not very photogenic…

by Anonymousreply 5July 27, 2023 1:36 AM

She keeps the crows out of the crops but that's about it for me!

by Anonymousreply 6July 27, 2023 1:51 AM

Absolutely stunning and photographed beautifully in the opening scenes of Eyes Wide Shut.

by Anonymousreply 7July 27, 2023 4:29 AM

No. Pasty, washed out. Gawky

by Anonymousreply 8July 27, 2023 4:31 AM

Eloquent?

by Anonymousreply 9July 27, 2023 4:39 AM

She looked her best in the mid-late '90s. Things started going crazy with the surgery sometime in the late-2000s. This is what she was born with:

No. She was cute/pretty and then fucked up her face with plastic surgery. She was never beautiful and certainly never a "great beauty."

by Anonymousreply 11July 27, 2023 4:55 AM

Never the great beauty that she is portrayed as but Hollywood goes crazy for ginger women for some strange reason. She is tall and skinny and wears clothes well.

by Anonymousreply 12July 27, 2023 4:57 AM

R9 oops, yes. I should have received an Oh dear! Must have been autocorrect because I did not intend for it to be eloquent.

by Anonymousreply 13July 27, 2023 4:58 AM

Oh, "Oh dear" is overused hereabouts. She is elegant! But her made-over face and perfect white skin are uncanny.

by Anonymousreply 14July 27, 2023 5:08 AM

Kidman was her most attractive in Malice, a film made thirty years ago, she played a femme fatale in it. But still not the raging beauty we were supposed to believe that she is.

by Anonymousreply 15July 27, 2023 7:27 AM

Nope, never a 'great beauty' -- just a pretty woman.

by Anonymousreply 16July 27, 2023 8:08 AM

Nope just a fuzzy haired Ranga.

by Anonymousreply 17July 27, 2023 8:26 AM

She really turned a corner with To Die For, The Others, and Moulin Rouge. She wears clothes exceptionally well.

by Anonymousreply 18July 27, 2023 8:37 AM

We did the best with what we were given. Tom didn’t have a lot of takers and Nicole at least had a clean pussy (looking at you Sean Young).

You’re welcomed

by Anonymousreply 19July 27, 2023 8:42 AM

I lived the entirety of Nicole’s Hollywood career, and she has never been considered a great beauty. Her only accomplishments in the 80’s and 90’s were having a luscious red mane and being married to Tom Cruise. At one point she botched another win under her belt by wearing a gorgeous John Galliano gown to the Oscars…which made her into somewhat of a fashion icon.

But now she’s a basic, wig-wearing granny.

by Anonymousreply 20July 27, 2023 8:46 AM

She’s still better looking than Gwyneth Paltrow—who is also shoved at us as some “great beauty”.

by Anonymousreply 21July 27, 2023 3:12 PM

Tall and thin, couture looks good on her. Not a beauty though.

by Anonymousreply 22July 27, 2023 8:23 PM

Am I mistaken or did Nicole de-ginger herself? Or was she never a true redhead at all. I know she went blonde but I thinking about her skin. Wasn't it freckled?

I thought she was, in the 90s. Gorgeous woman. I'd still take her

She was gorgeous in the 90s.

by Anonymousreply 26July 27, 2023 10:03 PM

She's a total fire crotch. In other words, no.

by Anonymousreply 27July 27, 2023 10:16 PM

Not only a great performance, but she was at her most beautiful in The Others.

by Anonymousreply 28July 27, 2023 10:43 PM

I never thought she was a great actress. Serviceable for sure, but not great. There isn't a single NK performance that I think deserving of an Oscar. But I respect that, being extremely wealthy and in little need of financial compensation, she has dedicated herself to projects that are frequently low key, well written and directed, and not aimed at a mass audience.

Good girl.

by Anonymousreply 29July 27, 2023 10:49 PM

She could've played Barbie in 1991, not because she's beautiful like Margot Robbie, but because she was pretty verging on plastic looking.

by Anonymousreply 30July 28, 2023 12:05 AM

Not. Really.

by Anonymousreply 31July 28, 2023 12:18 AM

Oh c'mon, R29. She was Oscar worthy in The Others and Moulin Rouge.

by Anonymousreply 32July 28, 2023 12:20 AM

No!!

by Anonymousreply 33July 29, 2023 2:57 AM

I loved her in Moulin Rouge and don't think anyone could have done better with the role. Change my mind.

by Anonymousreply 34July 29, 2023 3:05 AM

Nobody could seem more like a courtesan than Nicole Kidman.

by Anonymousreply 35July 29, 2023 10:49 AM

I don't think she was a great beauty but she was very attractive. She has star quality. Always impeccably dressed and presented. Sometimes a bit contrived. A very good actress but I think her American accent sucks.

She's done well with what she was given. She hasn't eaten for 35 years but wears it better than SJP, Posh and Angelina. She has gone a bit far with the surgery of course but she's still a very attractive lady. This pic is 2022.

To Die For, The Others and Dogville are not only more than serviceable performances , they are, much better than many oscar winner performances of late. She has many others good ones.

I don’t think she is a very interesting person. Actually, her bio and plastic surgeries, etc indicate she may be a little off. But nevertheless (or because of that), she is a very good actress.

by Anonymousreply 37July 29, 2023 12:13 PM

Oh she's a good actress, she's just weird looking. She fucked up her face with plastic surgery. She's the Michael Jackson of Hollywood actresses. We can mostly agree she's talented, but she's crazy.

by Anonymousreply 38July 29, 2023 1:06 PM

I would have accepted a massage from her during her "BMX Bandit" days.

by Anonymousreply 39July 29, 2023 1:28 PM

Happy to see The Others mentioned here. One of my favorite horror films and I feel like it is largely forgotten

by Anonymousreply 40July 29, 2023 2:47 PM

She seems…introverted.

by Anonymousreply 41July 29, 2023 3:37 PM

No, she was not even a beauty, never mind a great beauty. And looking like a giraffe next to her short husbands doesn't do her any favors.

by Anonymousreply 42July 29, 2023 3:50 PM

Yes R41, extremely.

by Anonymousreply 43July 29, 2023 5:42 PM

I've seen her compared to Deborah Kerr, or called her generation's Deborah Kerr, which I don't see.

by Anonymousreply 44July 29, 2023 7:00 PM

Me neither. More like Jean Simmons.

by Anonymousreply 45July 29, 2023 7:23 PM

I'm the person who liked her in Moulin Rouge. However, she has kind of oversaturated herself at this point with being all over the place in every damn thing. I hate when that happens, kind of the same thing has happened in the past with Meryl Streep as well, Jennifer Lawrence at one point, Amy Adams for awhile, and for God's sake, Margot Robbie too.

It's like Hollywood doesn't understand that it's OKAY if we have different actresses in different parts and don't always need to jump on one bandwagon. It's tiresome and boring.

by Anonymousreply 46July 29, 2023 7:52 PM

You don't have to be beautiful to act but movie stardom requires beauty

by Anonymousreply 47July 29, 2023 7:58 PM

The Others (aka I See Deader People) and Moulin Rouge are good movies but I didn't think she was particularly extraordinary in either. Well, Moulin is not so great, more like another manic musical which is typical Luhrmann, and Kidman's performance (which is actually more like a series of poses for a fragrance commercial) gets buried under all the frantic editing, so I don't know how people can be saying she was so amazing in it. And in I See Deader People she just frantically runs around looking for her keys with one of her favorite expressions - worried.

by Anonymousreply 48July 29, 2023 8:05 PM

Another big NO!

Garbo was the great beauty. Use her as your standard.

by Anonymousreply 49July 29, 2023 8:16 PM

She was gorgeous in Dead Calm with a face that never needed makeup. And she was about 21 and playing Sam Neill's wife? With at least 25 yrs age difference.

by Anonymousreply 50July 29, 2023 8:33 PM

She’s a ginger? That explains a lot. She doesn’t seem to get much sun, which is good for her fair skin.

For a while there, she was turning out turkey after turkey. So many bad films.

by Anonymousreply 51July 29, 2023 8:38 PM

Movie stardom requires beauty unless you're all the many movie stars who were not beauties.

by Anonymousreply 52July 29, 2023 9:39 PM

Her husband has the worst fucking hair/wig in the world.

The absolute worst.

by Anonymousreply 53July 30, 2023 2:27 AM

NOT.

by Anonymousreply 54July 30, 2023 3:31 AM

I say yes. She was ravishing for a period in the mid-90s, after she’d had a few tweaks but before she went full plastic. Just look at her in Batman Forever, styled like an Old Hollywood movie goddess.

R53, I think it is a wig. It looks like one.

by Anonymousreply 56July 30, 2023 9:20 AM

R40 it is coming to 4K from The Criterion Collection in October, so it hasn't been totally forgotten (at least by some of us). I saw it in the theater when I was rather young and impressionable, and have always loved it. It is a great film.

by Anonymousreply 57July 30, 2023 3:09 PM

The Others and To Die For were her best roles.

by Anonymousreply 58July 30, 2023 5:19 PM

I forget if she did a lot in Dead Calm but it was one of the best movies she was in, I think, though sort of cheesy.

by Anonymousreply 59July 30, 2023 6:20 PM

Only when she dresses up to go to AMC theaters to watch a movie alone.

by Anonymousreply 60July 30, 2023 6:27 PM

Who are our current great beauties? Angelina? Bella Hadid?

by Anonymousreply 61July 30, 2023 11:40 PM

Angelina was 10 years ago, dear.

by Anonymousreply 62July 31, 2023 3:39 AM

R62. True. Truth be told, I'm so out of it, I had to Google to remember Bella's name. Remembered the face. I haven't kept up with the times. It exhausts me.

by Anonymousreply 63July 31, 2023 3:45 AM

Actresses have a red hot period that lasts about 3-5 years. Not that she was ever red hot, but Nicole has had an exceptionally long stretch and that's because she chose interesting projects, not just star vehicles.

by Anonymousreply 64July 31, 2023 3:51 AM

“Dead Calm” also had Billy Zane at peak hotness with his own hair and a couple of oiled up nude shots.
