I just got out of the movie theater and I am going to give my personal and honest review. Let me start by saying Ryan Gosling gives what is arguably the best performance of his career. The critics were not overreacting with his endless praises. He is truly the highlight of the film, and this would be a star making performance for him if he were not already a star, but I do think this performance may give him a new respect with many.
"Barbie" was a mostly fun movie but is absolutely over-hyped in a way that it should not be. The first act is actually very fun, funny and charming, with the Barbie's and Ken's all going through the perfect motions of their day to day life in Barbieland, where every single day is the same exact perfect day filled with joy, laughter, the beach, dance parties and slumber parties. The second act is funny and interesting, with Barbie and Ken traveling to the real world so Barbie can find her human to see what is going on because Barbie is now having defects and human thoughts. The third act is mostly boring over the top cheese and schlock with a ridiculous huge battle between the Ken dolls before they unite, but they unite too late and lots of preaching about how awful women have it in the real world.
ALL men are depicted as inept, disgusting no good morons who all talk down to women and treat women like objects. Not a single man is depicted as anything but that in this film, while every single woman is bordering on genius, stronger than the men, wiser than the men and better at all the jobs than the men but mistreated and not appreciated. Literally, every single man is just awful in this movie, even the extras, with every man that crosses Barbie's path in the real world talking down to her and catcalling her. Women are depicted as 100% victims while men are 100% villains, and I am not exaggerating (Ken goes full villain after spending 15 minutes in the real world).
As for the performances, Ryan Gosling absolutely SHINES as the classic and quintessential Ken doll, who just longs to be accepted and loved by the classic and quintessential Barbie doll but she has zero interest in him and views him as nothing more than a friend. He is hysterical in every scene he is in, and gives the perfect example of what "good camp" is vs cringey and corny camp. He is over the top in all the best ways and plays it up wonderfully, and you get the impression Gosling himself was having a lot of fun playing this role. Margot Robbie was fine, but what you see in the trailer is exactly how she is throughout the entire movie. Same expressions, tone and mannerisms throughout. She was good at the more serious moments but she falls into the background next to Gosling and Kate McKinnon (who also steals every scene she is in). Michael Cera is another highlight, as Allan, Ken's original best friend who is long forgotten and never had models created after his original run. He should have been used more.
Overall I would give the movie a solid 7/10. It was mostly fun and humorous but the third act really went full bizarre and preachy.
As for the conservatives outraged over the trans actress cast as a Barbie, I assume they are upset that the movie casts her as a Barbie like the rest, just a regular woman and she isnt "trans". Her being trans is never acknowledged and she is treated like the other Barbie's by the Ken dolls, who treat her like a beautiful woman they desire.
