It came out when he died, but Sherman Hemsley being gay, having a long term Boyfriend, and doing crack and having an LSD lab shocked me.

I'd heard Sherman was gay, never heard about the crack and LSD!

Arafat didn't die of AIDS, he died of another disease the doctors were very coy to name directly because it's usually precipited (among others) by alcoholism, and Arafat, being a Muslim, would never die of it, and could not have been dying of it, so it was kept under embargo, a veil of mystery, which of course caused even more speculation, opening the door to all sorts of conspiracy theories, AIDS being one of the most prevalent. Arafat died of cirrhosis, which can only be caused by viral hepatitis, and that must have been the case for him, but since in the mind of the people cirrhosis equals alcoholism, being honest about it would have been a convoluted process navigating all the inferences.
I'm French and there was a joke about how Arrafat died. If you remember he was hospitalized in France and at the end he kept drifting in and out of consciousness. So, according to the joke, at one point Arafat regains consciousness, sees a man in his room, and asks who he is: "I'm doctor Israel, I'm in charge of your health care". Upon learning this, Arafat loses consciousness again. Then somewhat later Arafat comes around again and asks "where am I?" "you're in Villejuif" (Jewishtown, where you have one of France's biggest hospital, the one where Kylie Minogue was treated for her breast cancer BTW). Well, you guessed it, learning this, Arafat immediately loses consciousness again.
And finally, a little while later, Arafat wakes up again, sees many people in the room in quite a frenzy, and weary of asking any sort of question that might trigger him to the point of losing consciousness again he goes for the most trivial question he can think of: "how's the weather out there?" and all the people turn to him and say "maussade" (dull/gloomy but you pronounce it /Mossad/) and upon hearing this he dies instantly.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | July 18, 2023 6:49 AM |
Edit: "which can ONLY be caused by hepatitis" was actually "which can ALSO be caused".
by Anonymous | reply 4 | July 18, 2023 6:52 AM |
R3, You sound very sure of yourself. What makes you so, and moreover why think that cirrhosis of the liver would be to Muslims a worse diagnosis than AIDS?

by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 18, 2023 7:54 AM |
“I sucked one dick,” he said from the stage, drawing his audience back into a scene from his red-light district childhood. “Back in 1952. Sucked Wilbur Harp’s dick. It was beautiful, but I couldn’t deal with it. Had to leave it alone.” The crowd roared. “It was beautiful because Wilbur has the best booty in the world. Now I’m saying booty to be nice. I’m talking about ass-hole. Wilbur had some good ass-hole. And Wilbur would give it up so good and put his thighs against your waist. That would make you come quick.” With that confession, Pryor became perhaps the first major Hollywood celebrity to talk graphically about his own positive experience of gay sex – and certainly the first to do so in front of tens of thousands of people."

Both Tracy and Hepburn may have been bi, and had other same-sex relationships, but I still believe that their relationship was 100% real and sexual, because not only did Tracy have nothing to gain from her "bearding" for him (since it was already well known he was married), it would have been career-ending if the affair had been revealed to the public. Someone like Sinatra could fuck around as much as he pleased, because audiences WANTED him to be a bad boy, but Tracy's persona was that of a Catholic family man, and audiences would never have accepted him as anything else.
Tracy and Hepburn kept it so secret for so long because it was all too real.

R114: "Kate and Tracey were NOT involved sexually and they were bearding for one another."
Why on earth would a man who'd been married for decades need a beard when he already had one at home? And why would a married Hollywood star agree to pretend to be in a secret, extra-marital relationship with a lesbian co-star? None of that makes any sense.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | July 19, 2023 9:19 PM |
It was a different time, R118. The studios created narratives to keep the fans hooked and sometimes the fake romantic partners developed a strong rapport. Maybe Hepburn and Tracy had sex once or twice, who knows. Maybe he was bearding for her. She was a dyke and he was a drunk who probably didn't even know what kind of trouble he was getting into, and liked it. What's not to understand?

After Tracy died, the media made it into more than it was because they liked the idea of two legendary stars having a long-term secret affair
Hepburn played along with the narrative because it made her look straight

R119: "It was a different time"
Yes, exactly. Meaning the absolute LAST thing studios were doing was creating pretend extra-marital affairs when they were already up to their necks in trying to cover up and deny the real ones!
"Maybe Hepburn and Tracy had sex once or twice, who knows."
So, in other words... a real, sexual relationship, like I said.
"Maybe he was bearding for her."
Again, what motivation could he possibly have for doing that? Have you ever known-- or even heard of-- any married person who just suddenly decided to put their career, their marriage, and their reputation in jeopardy to beard for a gay person, without getting anything in return?

In Arab culture it's quite common for men to be married and "straight" yet have sex with boys.
It goes back to the strict separation of males and females in Muslim societies.
So it would surprise me if Arafat identified as "gay". But most Arab males have sex with other males. It's part of the culture.

The question of Hepburn and Tracy is a complex one. I am in the middle of a relationship with a straight man- and we have been together for 35 years. Why? Although not sexual it is very real on every other level- emotionally, mentally, etc. How does that happen? Well boys and girls it happens because life is not as clear cut as a Hallmark movie, or a judgmental gay quee. I met my husband when we were just out of college. He was straight then too. We had a deep relationship from the start because have stronger bonds about who we are to each other, and what that means. And when his life with women fell apart he came back to me. We don't have sex. I don't need that from him. But we have a real, loving, fulfilling life together. I was never this happy with a gay man, or he with a woman. That's what I think bonded Hepburn and Tracy. They needed each other, the sex was unimportant. Lots of people won't, can't or don't want to understand that type of relationship. But as with all real relationships it's nobody's business, and the couple doesn't have to explain its makeup to another soul, as long they are happy.

R189. There were always rumors Martin and Arthur had an affair. There’s a trashy novel that presents a fictional version of it—it’s called “The Princess and the Goblin” (not to be confused with George MacDonald’s wonderful children’s novel of the same title). Martin seems to have gotten around when she was in Hollywood and then cultivated the America’s tomboy sweetheart persona when she shifted back to Broadway, where her considerable talents as an actress and musical star were better served—she was on Kazan’s shortlist for Blanche in Streetcar.

Late Congressman Rev. Bill Gray. Worked with MLK in the sixties. Married with two children. I met him at a couple of meetings at my grandparents house. They were active in local politics; so was my uncle, their oldest son. His wife looked miserable and barely spoke to anyone. I asked myself why she looked so sad. After his death, my uncle told me that he had a white boy, one of those pages, in an apartment in the DC suburbs. Allegedly they were caught having sex in Gray’s office. When I came out, I can’t tell you how many times I would run into clergymen in the bars. So he wasn’t the only one.

Paul Walker liked barely legal girls…he was a dish but not gay or even bisexual. Who knows, maybe he used the casting couch. Most of them do.
by Anonymous | reply 277 | August 12, 2023 6:00 PM |
I always had a feeling Tracy was bisexual, at least, it was just gaydar. Also he tried too hard. To act masculine sometimes. When Hepburn did that special and asked “What was it, Spence?” It had already occurred to me that Tracy’s inner conflict that no one could decipher was probably that he liked men. Hepburn, though - I don’t know, I think she might have been in denial as I think she was a rather uptight New Englander. Her penchant for affairs with married, alcoholic men indicates she was. ‘Codependent’ but if she was gay she was extrememly discreet, because. We’ve all heard more about Dietrich and Crawford and women like that.

Hepburn was far from discreet, R278. It was widely known that she was a lesbian, even among press. But in those days something as dastardly as homosexuality was never mentioned or applied to anyone by the mainstream press.

Robert Evans? HA! A well known womanizer. Now Hamilton acts gay in every way - one short marriage, platonically dated LBJ's daughter, over attention to his appearance, hangs out will older diva women (like Imelda Marcos) - nobody talks about it, but I'd bet he's gay. My grandmother always assumed he was gay too.

As far as I've read R306, Hamilton is a womanizer who still sees himself as a lothario in spite of his orange decrepitude, and likes his women young, pretty, slutty and not particularly intelligent. He is friends with the likes of Liza because he moves in old jet set circles and aging divas still reign supreme in that fast-disappearing world.
Just because a man was handsome in his youth and is still ridiculously vain about his long-faded looks, it doesn't mean that he is gay.

Due to the Freedom Of Information Act (I think) I’ve seen FBI documents online about Van Johnson. When registering for the draft he declared himself homosexual and was ineligible. But when he became an MGM star-in-the-making he wanted to change the designation and met secretly with government men to tell them that he had now developed feelings for women, had had sex with a woman, etc. I think he was then made eligible for the draft. Subsequently he got in that car accident and due to the injury was no longer eligible.

R436, no bs here. In the 1970s and the early 1980s, Lee Majors and Farrah kept a place in the Upper Bear Creek part of the Evergreen area just west of Denver. It was well known and discussed among gay people that Majors, discreetly but seen and met, had boyfriends, one particularly and more overtly than others. He wasn't out in the bars, that I've heard, but in the moneyed-gay sets they were sociable. More locally, in the mountains, Farrah had a great reputation. And they were such a striking couple. There were other stories, but they smelled more like exaggerations or fiction.
Robert Redford and Gerald Ford's son, Jack, were two more of the Denver-to-Aspen territory visitors with steady boyfriends.

Back in the early 50s and 60s Rock Hudson and several of his rich Hollywood homo pals had a hunting lodge in Kentucky they would make regular trips to. While there they would have big parties with many of the young football studs from Eastern Ky. University. These parties always ended up as orgies. One of those studs was Lee Majors. And that's how Lee got his start in the entertainment industry. Rock Hudson brought him out to Hollywood and the rest is history.

I've written this before. (I hope not on this thread.)
I worked with a straight guy for a number of years. He never spoke about homosexuality he had no interest in it. Except once. His uncle was an important detective in NY and made it into books like Prince of the City. He knew a lot of people in the city.
This guy I worked with was a big movie nut and we were talking about The Bridge on the River Kwai. He told me his uncle told him that William Holden was gay but he liked his movies anyway. I've never heard any rumors about Holden anywhere else but coming from this guy it was so unexpected and he had no reason to lie. It never came up again. Why would he lie about such a thing when he certainly wasn't the gossipy sort at all? Nobody believes it. I don't know what to think.

Holden was a deeply unhappy, self-destructive alcoholic who literally drank himself to death at age 63:
[quote]According to the Los Angeles County Coroner's autopsy report, Holden bled to death in his apartment in Santa Monica, California, on November 12, 1981, after lacerating his forehead from slipping on a rug while intoxicated and hitting a bedside table. Forensic evidence recovered at the scene suggested that he was conscious for at least half an hour after the fall. His body was found four days later.
So anything is possible.

Older gays like me come from a way of thinking that categorized guys into gay and not gay. The fact is a lot of guys swing back and forth, and many choose to be permanently with women. Movie stars have people throwing themselves at them all the time. Buster Keaton used to say he'd go to his dressing room and there would always be a naked girl waiting for him. So sure they'd use sex to get ahead, or get some head. Or more.

Van Heflin won a supporting Oscar for playing Robert Taylor’s alcoholic best buddy “sidekick “ in “Johnny Eager” (1941). Though disguised, the homoerotic element is decidedly present.
I’ve always found Heflin’s masculine presence attractive in such later films as “Green Dolphin Street,” “The Strange Love of Martha Ivers,” “Shane,” and “3:10 to Yuma.” Even in later life, as he got thicker, and the ravages of his own alcoholism took their toll, he still had the same kind of dad-bod attractiveness, in “The Greatest Story Ever Told” and “Airport.”
But I’ve never heard any indication he was gay.

I've often wondered about Kevin McCarthy (the actor, not that piece of dog shit in Washington). I know he had 2 long term marriages the produced children, but that doesn't prove anything. He was very close (if not best) friends with Montgomery Cliff. I read a book he wrote many years back and he talked about being in a city with Cliff when Cliff went missing during an outing. McCarthy said he searched high and low for him and finally found a gay sauna and decided to go in to see if he was in there. Oh boy was he in there. McCarthy said he found Montgomery in a room, naked, on his back on the floor and a group of naked men standing around him ejaculating all over him.

R547, William Brooks Clift, aka Brooks Clift, was Monty's older brother. He had a son, Jamison, with actress Kim Stanley.
Their mother Sunny was the illegitimate daughter of Woodbury Blair, son of Postmaster General Montgomery Blair, and Maria Latham Anderson, daughter of Civil War hero Robert Anderson. Sunny was adopted out and neither the Blairs nor the Andersons acknowleged her as their own. Sunny spent her life trying to convince everybody that she was of aristocratic lineage and raised her children as if they were. The Clift kids were raised in Europe and privately tutored until the Crash and Great Depression forced the family to move back to Omaha.

R554, the McCarthys severed ties with Clift because he was a drug addict, whose behavior had become erratic, needy, and unbearable. When Clift endangered the life of their son, whom they left in his care, they were done with him.
Clift and newly divorced McCarthy briefly reunited on the set of The Misfits in 1961, but the camaraderie of the past was long gone.

I am super upset that Elliott Gould isn’t on tv regularly. He was EXTREMELY handsome. In the Life of Brian it was mentioned about Spencer Tracy, I think it was Biggus Dickus actually that said it

My late Mom had a gay co-worker at a Federal agency back at the height of the Mccarthy era in the extremely homophobic 50's. She had to sign a buttload of affidavits swearing she was "not now nor was she ever a member of the Communist party".
My Mom became very close friends with him; they went on several platonic "dates", and he even took her to a gay bar once. She mentioned feeling very uncomfortable, as she was the only woman there. They left fairly quickly, as it was obvious the patrons were less than pleased by her presence.
Anyway, to get to the point, my Mom's friend was from San Francisco, and his ex-boyfriend had worked as part of the crew at a couple of the major studios in Hollywood in the forties and early to mid fifties. He knew all the gay dirt on all the big names.
Here are the names my Mom's friend told her.
Remember, this was way before the mainstream media even hinted at these actors being gay/bi.
Errol Flynn Rock Hudson Tyrone Power Van Johnson Peter Lawford Monty Clift Cary Grant Danny Kaye Laurence Olivier
Of course, several years later, all those names have been discussed as being gay/bi, except for one, who to my knowledge, has never been mentioned: Jerry Lewis.
My Mom's friend claimed it was well known in Hollywood circles that Lewis was gay, or at least bi.
Concerning Van, her friend told her that Van was picked up by the cops a couple of times for soliciting underage boys. The studio had to pay a fortune to hush things up and keep it out of the papers.
An extremely homophobic co-worker had it in for my Mom's friend. It goes without saying that even a hint of being gay in those days, especially at a Federal agency, would have been grounds for immediate termination.
Not sure how this other co-worker found out, as her friend was in the closet (or tried to be), but he approached my Mom one day and told her "Stay away from that fag if you know what's good for you".
My Mom told her friend, and out of a combination of a fear of being fired/outed, and a desire to return to SF to try and reconcile with his boyfriend, he quit and returned to SF.
My Mom and he continued to correspond for about a year. One day my Mom got a letter from his sister; her friend had committed suicide. My Mom was devastated. Although she denied it until the day she died, I'm convinced that despite his being gay, he was the true love of her life. I'm pretty sure she would have married him had he asked her. I even think she could have accepted his relationships with other men.
She kept his picture all those years later. He was very handsome; tall and well built. He had been a print model for Arrow shirts back in SF. He had a great sense of humor, and enjoyed my Mom's company immensely. He took her to all the hit shows, and the best restaurants and clubs.
My Mom wrote back to his sister and asked about the circumstances of his suicide; she never heard back. My Mom seemed to think he might have been despondent after breaking up with his boyfriend again.
I hope you all don't mind my sharing the above memories with you. Thank you for understanding.

[R530] You bet he was! Go to Bio of him on Wikipedia and the section on his Personal Life, the likes of Truman Capote(?) said they were LOVERS! Also, it mentions a long list of 'relationships' with actors and such, including the! young English actor Roddy MacDonald! (When Clift broke up with him, he contemplated: suicide!) My take on Monty he had a healthy streak of narcissism, and he couldn't find MR. RIGHT to fit his perception of a lover worthy of him! Too bad!

Roddy MacDonald. You know, in that film How Dusty Was My Butte. He was also in the Planet of the Monkeys film.

Lewis had six or seven children. I'm going to rule out Gaaaaay.

Sheesh I know plenty of gay men who fucked their wives and raised families. Old school.
by Anonymous | reply 573 | September 21, 2023 11:47 PM |
As for Lewis, I don't think he was gay with that many kids, but Bi is a distinct possibility.
I heard an extended interview with him on "Fresh Air", and he started going on about his feelings for Dean Martin, said repeatedly that "I loved him". "I really loved him" and so on, and then he'd say that it was in a platonic or spiritual sense or some such bullshit. He sounded like he'd been truly in love when he was younger and couldn't act on it or even admit it to himself at the time, but had come to accept his feelings in his old age, and even talk about them in public, when the times were more understanding and he was too old to worry about a career.

I saw Van Johnson in La Cage on Broadway. Could not even carry a tune. Embarrassing. I don't know how Arthur Laurents ok'd his casting especially after he fired Robert Stack.

For years I have loved reading the gossip and scandals of old Hollywood. As I recall, It was pretty common knowledge that Van Johnson was Gay. Tyrone Power was Bi, but probably leaning Gay. After all, he had an affair with Judy Garland and was hurt when she refused to marry him. Errol Flynn wasn't Gay. He was a wild, hard drinking prankster. Never heard any rumors about Jerry Lewis. I just could not stand him or his movies, because of of his brand of slapstick comedy. Now Peter Lawford was a complete mess and Gay, Gay, Gay. No wonder Pat LAwford was a drunk.

Hugh O'Brian married for the first and only time when he was 81 years old, 10 years before his death. Perhaps that was the source of some of the gay rumors, that such a good-looking man wasn't married until the last 10 years of his life.

Peter Lawford was in the closet, shoved to the very back of the closet by his mother and his handlers when he was making a movie with June Allyson. He was marked for stardom as one of the posh leading men Hollywood was so fond of, but he just missed it, never got as big as he was first destined to be. Sinatra kept his career going for a while, but after JFK ditched Sinatra, Sinatra ditched Peter. I read a biography of LAwford, and his mother was a real piece of work. She knew he was Gay, but she was determined to keep his career on track. She was meddlesome and overbearing. She completely dominated him. I remember one story vividly where Peter used to go down to Santa Monica to the beach to hang out and swim with a group of young men, and have sex. When the studio got wind of it, he was reigned in quickly. As he got older he fell into drugs and alcohol in a big way. He was the one who introduced Elizabeth Taylor to the used car salesman who supplied him with drugs. Peter was into alcohol, pills, and cocaine.

Peter Lawford and Sal Mineo were fuckbuddies during the lengthy 3 month shoot of "Exodus" (1960) in Israel and Cyprus.
Maureen O'Hara claimed in her autobiography that, while filming "Kangaroo" (1952) in Australia, her co-stars, Lawford and Richard Boone (!), were arrested in a gay brothel "full of beautiful boys."
Of course, Lawford also had his many dalliances with the glamour stars of MGM, including Lana Turner, who claimed he was a lousy lover.

You could spot Van Johnson's gayness from outer space, but Keenan Wynn's surprised me. Of the whole Van-Evie-Keenan saga, Papa Ed Wynn commented, "I can't keep them straight. Evie loves Keenan. Keenan loves Evie. Van loves Evie. Evie loves Van. Van loves Keenan. Keenan loves Van."
