Wisconsin Boy, 13, Who Disappeared 1 Month Ago May Be Attempting to Live ‘Off the Grid’: Police

Police in Wisconsin say a teenage boy may be living in the wilderness as a survivalist after disappearing from his family’s home last month.

James Yoblonski, 13, was reported missing on the morning of June 12, according to Sauk County Sheriff Chip Meister.

Family and authorities believe James may be living “off the grid,”said Sauk County Lieutenant Steven Schram, according to The Wisconsin State Journal.

The teen’s father told police that his son “had taken a family vehicle,” which was found by a deputy about an hour after the report was made, the sheriff said. James may also have taken a firearm with him, per the Journal’s report.

"He's a smart kid," James' father Bill Yoblonski told ABC affiliate WKOW. "This is uncalled for, to do something like this and not to talk to anybody about it."

Much of the search has been focused on the area west of Devil's Lake State Park near U.S. Highway 12, according to the Journal.

Crews began searching an area near U.S. Highway 12 and the Sauk Hill after authorities pinged James’ cell phone, Meister said. But the teen still has yet to be found.

During the search, deputies found “property belonging to James” at what the sheriff described as “a makeshift campsite.” Crews have located at least two different campsites that may have been set up by James, according to WKOW.

Authorities believe James “is acting with intention,” Schram said, per the Journal. They also believe James had “two woodland survival manuals” in his possession when he disappeared.

James' father told WKOW that he also bought his son “some off-grid books,” one of which he seemingly took when he disappeared from his Reedsburg home.

"I hope he knows that we love him and we just want him home and safe," he added. "He's not in trouble, I just want him home."

Authorities are exploring “all avenues” as the search continues for James, according to a second statement from Meister, released July 7.

Anyone with information about James’ whereabouts is asked to contact the Sauk County Sheriff's Office at (608) 356-4895.

Someone is making that child's normal life a living hell, if he'd rather go live in the woods than live with an abusive parent of school bullies.

If life at home was better than sleeping on the ground and eating raw squirrel or whatever he can steal, then he'd have gone home by now.

by Anonymousreply 27July 17, 2023 1:52 AM

I wish my brother would have done this when we were kids.

by Anonymousreply 28July 17, 2023 1:55 AM

I also fantasized about running away as a kid, but I knew damn well I had no place to go.

And there weren't any survivable woods nearby, not that the Wisconsin woods will be survivable come November.

by Anonymousreply 29July 17, 2023 2:00 AM

He definitely must have an abusive home life if he went to this extreme for so long.

by Anonymousreply 30July 17, 2023 2:01 AM

[quote][R21], did she ever go back to “normal” sometime after he was born?

r26 Not really. Her issue was with a bad temper that got dialed up to 100 when pregnant. According to witness reports, she was the same way when pregnant with me. She only "calmed down" as she aged. She's currently just neurotic, now.

by Anonymousreply 31July 17, 2023 2:55 AM

This is a local story. Online commenters have been recently turning away from the "survivalist kid" angle and are pretty sure foul play was involved. I still think the kid is out there. There are a million places to hide out, this area is filled with wooded hills, caves, abandoned mines & farmsteads, Bluffs, outcroppings, hidden valleys. The area he was supposedly in is considered dangerous for hikers. He could have fallen. If the campsites they've been finding are actually his, that's a good sign. I say leave the kid alone though; he's probably trying to escape a shitty home life. I ran away as a teenager too.

by Anonymousreply 32July 17, 2023 3:11 AM

I grew up in this area; in fact, one of my high school friend's family home is in the stretch of land they're searching. This kid will be in some real danger if he's still out there when deer season starts. We couldn't even hang out in the open yard around my friend's house then. Their house was hit several times by stray bullets, and you didn't want to be something moving around through the woods without a blaze jacket.

by Anonymousreply 33July 17, 2023 8:35 AM

The parents probably killed him.

by Anonymousreply 34July 17, 2023 12:06 PM

Yeah, I wouldn't be so quick to admit that i bought the survivalist books if I was the dad.

by Anonymousreply 35July 17, 2023 12:21 PM

by Anonymousreply 36July 17, 2023 6:46 PM

I blame YouTube. There are thousands of military guys making videos of how to survive in the wilderness. They sometimes make me want to quit my job and sell my house, and go live in the mountains.

But there's no DoorDash or UberEats, so I snap out of it, and get back on the hamster wheel.

by Anonymousreply 37July 17, 2023 6:59 PM

I agree that this is EXTREMELY suspicious, and the parents don't appear to be as distraught as they should be. Moreover, a 13-year-old is still a little child in many ways; it isn't normal AT ALL for him to have decided to leave his family home and attempt to survive in the wilderness, without at least trying to maintain a very basic line of communication with someone within the household, or the wider community.

I think that the parents will have to answer lots of intrusive questions from the authorities in the near future, because there is something seriously amiss in this story.

by Anonymousreply 38July 17, 2023 7:11 PM

by Anonymousreply 40July 17, 2023 10:37 PM

If he’s alive, future junkie.

by Anonymousreply 41July 17, 2023 10:39 PM

The likeliest scenario is that the kid is dead, and that the campsites in the woods were made by other people living off the grid. And if the kid is dead and in a shallow grave somewhere, or in a deep grave in the back yard, the overwhelming odds are that he was killed by a parent.

And if the kid is alive and in the woods, the overwhelming odds are that he was driven there by an abusive parent.

by Anonymousreply 42July 18, 2023 12:17 AM

Sad.

I hope the poor little shit is alive.

by Anonymousreply 43July 18, 2023 12:21 AM

[QUOTE]"This is uncalled for, to do something like this and not to talk to anybody about it."

What a bizarre thing for they father to say. He expected the kid to check in before running away?

No 13 year old has the skills, judgment, or stamina to survive alone in the terrain posters have described. Unless the kid's holed up with a friend somewhere, I'm afraid they're going to find skeletal remains, if they ever find him.

I have been following this case since day 1 on Websleuths (ya I know). I became suspicious early on when Dad changed his story about the gun not missing from the home but from his workplace. If my 13 year took off into the woods I would be in the woods in front of the search teams, not doing interviews.

by Anonymousreply 75July 21, 2023 4:06 PM

[quote]This 13 year old is 5'11 and 120lbs?

Yummo!

by Anonymousreply 81July 22, 2023 11:50 PM

R79, yeah, but Barron’s height is extremely unusual.

I’m not saying this kid can’t be extremely tall, either, but a lot of these parents whose kids get lost or whatever have wildly inaccurate perceptions of their kids’ size— because they never paid attention/don’t give a shit about them to begin with.

by Anonymousreply 82July 23, 2023 12:25 AM

When they find him, he'll be 7' and 230 lbs.

by Anonymousreply 83July 24, 2023 10:47 PM

I’m not justifying the dads behavior, but this isn’t a young, small child. I have known of some parents who were very unconcerned when their teens disappeared. I knew a woman who announced “I hope he never comes back!” I never talked to her again after that, so I don’t know if her 16 year old son ever did come back.

by Anonymousreply 84July 25, 2023 12:16 AM

r84 Kids become irritating once they hit preadolescence, yes. But that's still a weird response from a parent.

by Anonymousreply 85July 25, 2023 1:47 AM

I don't know, r84

I have found that Mothers are quicker to sour on children than Fathers. Dad is more likely to kill you and wants to keep you under his thumb (unless you are gay) but Mom resents having given birth to you and would rather you just go away.

by Anonymousreply 86July 25, 2023 12:43 PM

What kind of people do you know, r86?!

by Anonymousreply 87July 25, 2023 5:06 PM

Hmm, what would be worse?

Mother’s “resentment” of me scrolling on my phone all day and playing video games for hours on end when she needed a hand with the groceries or the yard needed mowed, or Dad shooting me in the back of the head as I’m kneeling next to my brother and sister who are screaming in terror and begging for him not to kill us…

Oh that’s easy, Mother’s worse!

by Anonymousreply 88July 25, 2023 5:17 PM

R88 at least Dad has a passion for what he is doing instead of an icy indifference.

by Anonymousreply 107July 27, 2023 5:47 PM

What if the kid never existed at all?

What if the “dad” was cleaning out an old shed when he ran across an old produce crate with an old-timey painted label of a farmer’s son smiling proudly and holding a bushel of potatoes in a red and white check shirt and overalls, and he just cut and pasted the face from the label onto a generic yearbook photo of a kid in a gray heather tee shirt and called 911 and made the whole thing up to get outpourings of sympathy that may lead to romance. That would also explain the “dad” saying he was 6’ tall and 110 lbs, he was making it up and doesn’t understand the average 13 year old’s proportions.

Look at the image in R91. You can see it probably come straight off an old watermelon crate label, “Billy’s Blue Ribbon Melons!” and it’s that kid, standing there beaming, as in the photo, but holding a prize melon.

I planned my escape(s) a bit less efficiently than this kid.

For the first, at maybe about age 7, I went into the kitchen and notified my mom that I was running away and would need a fork and a spoon. She gave them to me and said she wanted them back. I agreed. And never got off the property.

For the second, I began hiding food in a seldom-used cupboard that I could reach. My cousins came over, discovered the stash, and ate it.

After that I settled for fantasizing.

by Anonymousreply 132August 4, 2023 6:29 PM

Polygraph tests are bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 133August 4, 2023 6:48 PM

I think if this kid was alive, someone would have spotted him by now.

by Anonymousreply 134August 4, 2023 7:28 PM

I planed to run away to the Morgan Library or the Frick. Inspired by From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. I was meticulous about it and detailed plans. I guess common sense prevailed. Would have been a great experience to have done it, however.

by Anonymousreply 135August 4, 2023 7:36 PM

I loved that book when I was a kid, R135!

Of course, now I wonder if museums had to put up with a spate of runaway children, in the sixties and seventies.

And then I woke up and realized I was gay!

by Anonymousreply 137August 4, 2023 7:43 PM

Now his father thinks he was coerced to run away. Won't post the link because the only one I could find is to Fox News.

by Anonymousreply 138August 10, 2023 8:58 PM

Did the father say who could have coerced his son?

by Anonymousreply 139August 10, 2023 9:07 PM

The dad killed him and knows he's dead.

"Coerced" is just another distraction for the cops.

This dude did a Drew Peterson and probably put that poor kid in a vat of acid so there was no evidence.

by Anonymousreply 140August 10, 2023 9:11 PM

Here's what the article says, r139:

Dad of missing Wisconsin boy, 13, who left home in family van believes he may have been coerced

James Yoblonski, 13, apparently left his Wisconsin home on June 12 in his family's van and possibly with his father's gun

The father of a missing 13-year-old Wisconsin boy said he believes his son drove away from home in a family van — potentially at the request or coercion of another person.

William Yoblonski reported his son, James Yoblonski, missing on June 12 to the Sauk County authorities, saying the 13-year-old fled their Reedsburg home in the family van overnight, possibly with William's handgun.

"It's not like him to do anything like this," Yoblonski, a single father with four children, told Fox News Digital. "I mean, he's never driven my vehicle on the streets or anything. He's moved my van around my shop a couple times. That was it."

Video footage caught James walking out of his home around midnight on June 12 and walking across the street to the family van. He sat inside the van for about an hour before taking off, his dad explained.

Investigators discovered searches on James' electronic devices "about being a minor on an airplane and crossing state lines," his dad said.

James also took his father's cell phone when he left home, which pinged on the western edge of Devil's Lake State Park on June 12, according to the Sauk County Sheriff's Office.

Detectives found a makeshift campsite inside the park that they believe the boy used, but William Yoblonski doesn't think his son spent the night at the camp because search dogs did not pick up his scent in the area.

"I think he left with somebody. I think he sat there and waited for a horn to honk and came out and got in the car with somebody," William explained.

William thinks James met someone online or in person who may have coerced and possibly instructed him on how to leave home. In a Snapchat video posted from William's phone, James apparently said something along the lines of, "'I'm sorry. I don't think I'll be back for school. I don't want to hurt anybody, but I might,'" William said.

He added that the "strange thing" about the video was the angle at which James recorded it in the family van he drove off in during the early morning hours of June 12.

"My cup holders in my van will not hold that cell phone," William said. "Somebody else was with him holding their cell phone" while recording the video of James, he added.

Authorities eventually found the Yoblonskis' family van unattended in Sumpter, Wisconsin — about a 30-minute drive southeast of Reedsburg.

William said he knows he is a suspect in his son's disappearance, but he recently passed a polygraph test from authorities that he said proves otherwise. He added that he is "very upset" with the sheriff's office for a lack of answers. William is also offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to his son's whereabouts.

"I just want my son back. That's why I put up a $10,000 reward. If I could afford to go more than that … but I just don't have that kind of money. Like I said, I'm a single father," he said.

by Anonymousreply 141August 10, 2023 9:25 PM

Is the mother alive, dead, what?

Maybe the mom is going through her own "survivalist phase".

by Anonymousreply 145August 10, 2023 9:37 PM

Well, the absent mother is somewhat explained. This is the first I've heard about three other siblings which is a little shocking because it wasn't mentioned in stories posted here. Older or younger siblings? Was he required to be their caretaker on mom's absence and got tired of it all?

Is dad keeping everything on a tight clamp or is it LE?

by Anonymousreply 146August 10, 2023 9:39 PM

What's the mother's story? I missed it. I know there's an adult sister in prison, I didn't read about several other siblings.

But then I've read about this situation here in this thread.

by Anonymousreply 147August 10, 2023 9:43 PM

I don't think anyone knows the mother's story. Is it just bring reported now? Like you, r147 what I know comes from this thread. Are you somewhat local? I hadn't heard about an imprisoned sister.

Because if the dad is a "single father", maybe the kid went back to his mother. Who could, presumably, drive a van and hold a cell phone.

The story where the sister is mentioned is in the link at R114, R148. I’m not local— never been to Wisconsin. The Great Lakes accent is too much for my tender Texas ears.

R146, how’s the absent mother explained?

by Anonymousreply 157August 11, 2023 1:54 PM

The father admits he’s super strict, so maybe James wanted to get the hell out of Dodge. The daughter being in prison is interesting. Perhaps dealing/using drugs to escape her life.

by Anonymousreply 158August 11, 2023 4:42 PM

According to the ancient prophecies on one website, he'll run into a kind loner who looks 15 years younger than his actual age, and who owns a large, secluded house with a pool, many spare bedrooms, and a massive entertainment system.

Someone must've seen that kid by now. All we have is the dad's word. I think he's been killed by a family member and somewhere Bryan Singer is struggling cuz that's another potential suitor that got away!

In reading Websleuths there has been absolutely no mention of mom or other siblings except the jailbird sister. I'm leaning towards James having never been in the woods. Dad's theory is he met somebody at the spot the van was left. Another theory is that dad killed him.

Someone on WS pointed out we are only getting information from one source..Dad.

Somebody mentioned someone would have seen him by now. Assuming that the one image of him is a school picture. It would be almost a year old. If his hair has grown out he would not recognized by people that do not know him.

by Anonymousreply 175August 12, 2023 12:17 AM

by Anonymousreply 176August 12, 2023 12:25 AM

by Anonymousreply 188August 16, 2023 9:43 PM

R177, about the father's missing phone: that's a mistake a murderer might make under pressure. You can imagine him grabbing what he thought was the son's phone and disposing of it, only to realize later that he'd accidentally disposed of his own phone and kept his son's.

by Anonymousreply 189August 16, 2023 9:48 PM

Over 2 months and no one has seen this kid?

Dead.

by Anonymousreply 190August 19, 2023 1:47 AM

Have they checked his mommy's basement?

by Anonymousreply 191August 19, 2023 3:03 AM

Maybe the kid and his mother have started a new life in Costa Rica or Uruguay, somewhere the father can't find him.

Because if there's a "strict" asshole father, and the mother is nowhere to be found, there's reasonable odds that the father is abusive, and the mother either ran for her life, or he managed to get full custody to punish her for fleeing from the abuse. I've see that happen, sometimes a family court judge will side with a father who plays the devoted dad who wants full custody, and who tells the court no end of lies about his wife's cheating and drug use, and who will call his wife's flight from abuse "abandonment of her parental responsibilities". Now maybe she's dead, or off OD-ing on fentanyl somewhere or in prison, but well. It's a possibility.

But R4 mentioned "My Side of the Mountain", which is a movie I've been wanting to see for years but I am not giving YouTube a single cent for it. It is an old movie. But I love this old performance by Theodore Bikel, this song is simply gorgeous:

Seriously?

Which is more plausible - that a 13 year old boy is living in the wilderness on his own or that someone in his family murdered him?

Sadly, it's the latter that is by far the most plausible explanation. At best, he ran away, then had an accident, died, and animals ate the remains.

by Anonymousreply 202September 10, 2023 11:56 PM

"Which is more plausible - that a 13 year old boy is living in the wilderness on his own or that someone in his family murdered him?"

The third possibility is that he ran off with an adult, hopefully a relative who wanted to get him away from his abusive father, and not a predator.

But you're right, murder is far likelier than either of the other possibilities.

by Anonymousreply 214September 11, 2023 8:01 AM

Just the fact that Dad had living off the grid book laying around not buried on some shelf says he was probably a doomsday prepper nut job at the very least. Grown men who think like that are not functioning well in society. It's one thing to watch videos on the interest, it's a whole different ball of wax spending hard earned money on all that gear without a serious intent to use it some day. It's basically and escape plan. My hunch is he murdered the kid, and since he was in so deep to the survivalist fantasies, it made "logical" sense to him that it was a plausible excuse why his son is missing.

by Anonymousreply 215September 11, 2023 8:58 AM

by Anonymousreply 224October 13, 2023 7:13 AM

R33 here. I asked my mom about this recently, and the local gossip is that no one believes the kid was ever out in the woods. Search parties were called off early because of that, and the investigation has been focused outside of the area since then.

There's a chance hunters will turn up something now, but the sentiment is that either the kid was murdered by his dad or ran away or was lured away from home. There's an article linked earlier in the thread that shows some evidence that the kid may have been communicating with someone else just before disappearing. Human trafficking, perhaps?
