Is Madonna the new Liza Minnelli?

Unexplained illnesses. Cancelled concerts. Odd romantic relationships. Messy public outings. Is there a move to LA and a wheelchair in the near future?

by Anonymousreply 106July 18, 2023 5:44 PM

No. Liza is just a mess. Vadge has gone nutz.

by Anonymousreply 9July 13, 2023 11:45 PM

Other than Cabaret and Arthur, what big movies did Liza have?

by Anonymousreply 10July 13, 2023 11:53 PM

I’ve never liked Madonna but I did notice that it was mandatory for people who wrote about her to say that she was some sort of genius at “reinventing herself.”

It has looked to me like Liza invented herself precisely one time and that, like her or not, it was an authentic presentation. She was needy, even kinda desperate, and knew how to belt a tune and hoof along to it. She was old-school and she was real.

So, no, Madonna will never be Liza.

by Anonymousreply 20July 14, 2023 1:36 AM

If anyone wonders why Liza is having mobility issue now, it's because she gave it her all and sang and danced her her ass off for years. Her performance of "City Lights" is sensational as shown in the R20 video. The last few minutes of her performance is super-human. Imagine doing that every night live on Broadway! And if you watch until the end, you'll see her receive one of her four Tony Awards.

by Anonymousreply 21July 14, 2023 1:47 AM

R6, Madonna was for three decades one of the biggest stars in pop music with multiple hits. Liza never was.

I'm going to go ahead and "MARY!" myself but god damn, R19, I watched that clip and I swear the hairs on my arms and legs stood up. Goosbumps. Wowza. I'm not the world's biggest Liza fan, but that was sensational.

R23. Told ya so!

by Anonymousreply 26July 14, 2023 2:30 AM

Madonna reminds me in a way of being in her self-destructive career nadir right now like Diana Ross seemed to be with all her crazy around 2000, after her second husband divorced her and then she had all that hot mess with the security person at the airport check-in and then the DUI. It sort of made her finally land on her butt and realize she was human like the rest of us, but then she also had a seemingly very extensive family unit supporting her. Now even though she hasn't had big hit records in years, Diana is almost 80 and still touring regularly and seems well-adjusted. Perhaps this was a wakeup call for Medusa and she'll come back stronger after this and living in today, instead of constantly trying to compete and act like entertainers decades younger than she is now. Might be a stretch, with the trainwreck of a family she appears to have assembled around her, though. Bless...

And also, I think this means I am officially getting OLD? I used to think show tunes were so corny. In my 40s I finally started seeing musicals on Broadway. Now I'm 50 and and I'm sitting here thinking I need to go out tomorrow to the used record store down the street and purchase a bunch of musicals on vinyl.

So um....thanks? Just joking, I really love these clips.

Supposing this isn’t a ms congeniality contest, Madonna does not compare with Liza, who has been a non-entity for most of her life. Like r22 said. Madona p, for all her faults is the major pop for the last 30 years. Liza, for all her talents was a nepo baby who squandered her many chances.

I am r8, by the way, hardly a Madonna stan, but come on

by Anonymousreply 56July 15, 2023 12:05 AM

Where's Madonna's Oscar for Evita, r55?

by Anonymousreply 57July 15, 2023 12:35 AM

R55. STFU. Liza has more talent in her pinkly finger than most of Hollywood combined. In addition to 'Cabaret' (won the Oscar) and 'New York, New York,' Liza was also in the 'Arthur' movies with Dudley Moore, she toured and sold out concerts all over the world, she was hysterical in TV's 'Arrested Development,' her Tony Award collection also includes "Liza at the Palace" in 2009. She even performed an outstanding version of 'Losing My Mind' with the Pet Shop Boys. The talent of some performers (Angela Lansbury, Frank Sinatra to name a couple) doesn't always transfer to the screen for a sustained period of years unless it's the right project. No bitchy, catty potshots from the likes of you are needed. Liza made her mark.

Liza has more than proven herself. She is extraordinary, electrifying, and multi-talented performer even if she doesn't fit your version of a movie star. She's even more.

by Anonymousreply 71July 15, 2023 12:03 PM

Liza has mobility issues because she has Parkinson’s disease- so says Lorna. Liza is actually a very nice, down to earth person. She happens to have struggled with addiction as well. I’ve met her and gotten to know her (although not seen her since she left NYC) some years ago.

Madonna is nuts and not very well liked by her peers- understatement. I happen to like a lot of her music, but she doesn’t seem like a very cozy person.

R72 - charlie - knows every celebrity in New York City. Beware.

by Anonymousreply 74July 15, 2023 1:01 PM

R70, that performance is exactly why Liza is a star on stage and concerts but not in recordings. There's the built in camp of 3 Liza's performing that number in front of a bunch of gays, but the singing performance of the song is just not good.

All those quirks and eccentricities that are electric live are dreadful on records. Liza's record release after Cabaret and Liza with a Z was something called "The Singer". It was a collection of pop songs. It was one of, if not THE worst group of covers I've ever heard from a superstar singer. The Singer was her highest charting solo record but it's incredible that this would be the record they would release to take advantage of her success on TV and in movies. The production is bad but nothing can make up for Liza seemingly being unable to understand the very basic lyrics of any of these songs. Her version of "You're So Vain" is, well, decide for yourself.

'New York, New York' was written for Liza Minnelli by John Kander and Fred Ebb. It is the quintessential Liza song. Liza is a sensation. And as much as I love Frank Sinatra, he just butchers the song to death.

Liza was so gracious because it was Frank, but she should have forbidden him from ever singing 'New York, New York.' Liza sings it magnificently. Frank mangles it horribly.

I love Liza- superb in Cabaret. But I’ve never taken a like to her as a singer. Too harsh- loud yes- but vibrato wobbles off key and her dynamics kind of red hot mama without the vocal quality of, well, her mom when not diminished. Liza is a bit like Merman- you have to see her in person. Recorded, doesn’t come across-
