Mission Impossible 7 opened today for some reason

How strange. Can’t remember a film opening on a non holiday Tuesday.

Why the hell is it almost three hours? Jeez.

by Anonymousreply 1July 12, 2023 12:12 AM

I saw the trailer last week in the movie theater. I have to admit, the stunts looked amazing on screen.

by Anonymousreply 2July 12, 2023 12:14 AM

Tom Cruise = repulsive and unwatchable.

by Anonymousreply 3July 12, 2023 12:16 AM

R3 - repulsive and unwatchable

by Anonymousreply 4July 12, 2023 12:21 AM

R4.

by Anonymousreply 5July 12, 2023 12:25 AM

I WOULD go tonight or tomorrow but that’s so long. OMG it’s not like these movies have a plot.

by Anonymousreply 6July 12, 2023 12:26 AM

The seventh edition of hours of idiotic stunts.

Shortly before his death in 1996, Greg Morris saw the film version of Mission: Impossible starring Tom Cruise. He so disliked the movie (as did some of his former co-stars) that he left the theater early, calling it "an abomination".

I concur.

Opening on a Tuesday is a stint grab, right? Tuesday’s through Sunday’s receipts will all count as its “opening weekend?”

by Anonymousreply 9July 12, 2023 12:58 AM

No.m

by Anonymousreply 10July 12, 2023 1:02 AM

God I hate iOS. It just adds letters for no reason.

by Anonymousreply 11July 12, 2023 1:03 AM

In all likelihood Cruise/Paramount were absolutely determined to open this in July and figured this was the only way to get enough screenings before Barbenheimer.

I had no idea this was even happening, you think they would have advertised it OPENS TUESDAY! No one would think it, it’s so rare. Only if 4th of July or Christmas falls on a Tuesday would this happen. There are probably going to be lots of empty theaters tonight and tomorrow because no one knew this was happening.

by Anonymousreply 12July 12, 2023 1:07 AM

Such a damn joke - Tom Cruise trying too hard to look tough, manly and virile.

by Anonymousreply 13July 12, 2023 1:12 AM

Any young, r13.

by Anonymousreply 14July 12, 2023 1:48 AM

The film "previewed" a day early in some markets, a routine practice for studios. Opening date is Wednesday July 12.

Per Deadline: "The best reviewed Mission: Impossible of all-time at 98% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, Dead Reckoning is projected to have a $90M five-day stateside, $250M+ worldwide."

by Anonymousreply 15July 12, 2023 2:02 AM

All movies get ridiculous reviews views now? In order to save the industry and the theaters?

by Anonymousreply 16July 12, 2023 3:02 AM

I saw it last night and it was a perfect summer film……it also goes very fast…….it didn’t feel too long…….

by Anonymousreply 17July 12, 2023 5:44 AM

r17 = Miss Tammy Cruise

by Anonymousreply 18July 12, 2023 8:15 AM

Is Henry Cavill in this one?

by Anonymousreply 19July 12, 2023 8:43 AM

Tom made a complete fool of himself sending back his 3 Golden Globes in scandalised protest of HFPA, only for it to be a storm in a teacup. As if he didn't know who they were anyway.

by Anonymousreply 20July 12, 2023 9:16 AM

R19 no he died in the last one

by Anonymousreply 21July 12, 2023 10:30 AM

[quote]I WOULD go tonight or tomorrow but that’s so long. OMG it’s not like these movies have a plot.

I'll see it in a couple of weeks, after the crowds die down. Tommy's a loon, but the MI films are very entertaining.

No one liked the 1996 Mission Impossible which is why Brian DePalma did not return for any of the sequels.

I don’t think it was until 4 that the series found its rhythm as essentially a delivery vehicle for spectacular stunts filmed on location without greenscreens of excessive effects.

The first film’s signature sequence on a helicopter flying through the Chunnel with heavy CGI would not pass muster for Cruise today.

The Donald Trump of the Movie Industry

by Anonymousreply 24July 12, 2023 12:02 PM

That’s idiotic.

The Donald Trump of the movie industry was Brett Ratner.

r17 wrote that about Top Gun: Maverick last year, too, and ALL of Tom Cruise's movies (per his employment contract as a shill).

by Anonymousreply 26July 12, 2023 12:50 PM

Top Gun: Maverick was the 2nd biggest grossing film of 2022. Why is anyone who likes his films a shill?

by Anonymousreply 27July 12, 2023 12:55 PM

^^Shill & water-carrier for Xenu.

by Anonymousreply 28July 12, 2023 12:58 PM

I just saw this. It’s a step down from the high-water mark of Fallout.

It’s just too much. It goes on and on and on. They could have cut twenty-thirty minutes and several major characters. Pom Klementieff is there, I don’t think she utters a word of dialogue. Shea Wigham is there in every scene, I still don’t know who he was.

The finale falls into the trap of action movie finalés on steam locomotives (why is there a steam locomotive in 2023?) If you remember the finales of Back to the Future III or The Lone Ranger, you’ll recognize my gripe.

Lover the evil AI plot and Haley Atwell and Esai Morales are good additions, but they needed to trim the fat on this.

by Anonymousreply 30July 13, 2023 1:13 AM

The limited IMAX screenings due to previous contracts for Indy 5 and Oppenheimer. Gives it an extra 10,000 showtimes in Imax by opening Tuesday......If youre wondering why Imax screens would go to a drama instead of MI7, Oppenheimer is actually filmed in Imax and Nolan is the world's top filmmaker using it on every movie. These other movies play on Imax screens, Oppenheimer actually shot in the format.

by Anonymousreply 31July 13, 2023 1:29 AM

Who would go to such a movie? Have they done an FBI profile?

by Anonymousreply 32July 13, 2023 1:41 AM

[quote] Shortly before his death in 1996, Greg Morris saw the film version of Mission: Impossible starring Tom Cruise. He so disliked the movie (as did some of his former co-stars) that he left the theater early, calling it "an abomination".

That was almost 30 years ago. Mission Impossible detractors continue to use MI1 as the reason the series must be unwatchable but in truth the series has evolved greatly since that first one and the last 2 or 3 are really remarkable action films. According to the reviews, this one is even better.

I don't care about Tom Cruise, I want to see what Christopher McQuarrie has done this time.

by Anonymousreply 33July 13, 2023 1:50 AM

I saw a matinee today (only about 3 other people).

WAY too long, but instead of being bored I felt fatigued afterward because it’s almost all action onscreen.

I also thought the AI plot seemed confusing and overly complicated.

Mission Impossible is underperforming.

$16 million Wednesday opening day including previews, but this is actually much lower than Cruises’ 2005 Wednesday opening of War of the Worlds which did $21 million.

Cruise should probably be faulted for not bringing in a star who appealed to young people. Young people are off from school now and would have turned out for this movie with a big name like Henry Cavill was in the last film.

C U Next Tuesday, plebs!

by Anonymousreply 38July 13, 2023 11:57 AM

I was a teenager when MI:2 was released. It was cool seeing my country, Australia, on the big screen. Even if we were made to look like a bunch of dumbass hicks.

by Anonymousreply 39July 13, 2023 11:59 AM

It’s doing extremely badly and may only open to 70 million. That’s catastrophic.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 40July 13, 2023 5:45 PM

For comparison, Fallout did $60 million over three day and this is doing $70 million over five day. Absolute catastrophe.

The culprit? IMO it’s Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer is the appointment for the older male audience this movie needs. Oppenheimer screenings are already sold out next weekend. People just don’t want to see two movie so close together.

Additionally, older audiences tend not to flock to the cinema as opening weekend, they may wait til 2nd or 3rd weekend. But, at that point, Oppenheimer may be the big movie everyone is seeing and talking about.

lol, sure, Jan.

by Anonymousreply 43July 13, 2023 6:31 PM

I suspect Oppenheimer is going to do great the first 2 or 3 weeks and then it's going to flatten out. MI will have legs.

by Anonymousreply 44July 13, 2023 6:53 PM

I’m just gonna stay home and watch Easter Parade. That Peter Lawford!!

by Anonymousreply 45July 13, 2023 6:59 PM

[quote] MI will have legs.

The movie is opening twenty million below tracking and is losing thousands of theaters next week and you think it will have legs?

by Anonymousreply 46July 13, 2023 7:28 PM

It may have legs if he doesn’t trip in those huge lifts!

by Anonymousreply 47July 13, 2023 7:33 PM

Do you have to know what happened before? I haven’t seen one since the very first one.

by Anonymousreply 48July 13, 2023 7:37 PM

I wouldn’t go if you haven’t seen Fallout.

by Anonymousreply 49July 13, 2023 7:41 PM

When does Tom get his lifetime achievement Oscar. At the rate he's going, he sure ain't gonna get a competitive one.

by Anonymousreply 50July 13, 2023 7:58 PM

He will get his Oscar when he does "Rain Man II: Reverse Caregiver Boogaloo," in which his character develops early Alzheimer's and his autistic brother Raymond has to adjust to taking on the roles of guardian, nurse, and BFF.

by Anonymousreply 51July 13, 2023 8:10 PM

Yeah? Which one is that, R49?

How many are there, anyway?

by Anonymousreply 52July 13, 2023 9:01 PM

Umm… 7

Look at the title of the thread

by Anonymousreply 53July 13, 2023 9:12 PM

Has anybody seen this movie, yet? How is it?

by Anonymousreply 54July 16, 2023 3:03 PM

How has Tom Cruise gotten away with this crap for so long ?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 55July 16, 2023 3:20 PM

R54 it’s too long and there are two many characters, and the stunts are a bit anticlimactic and derivative of what’s been done before

But the cast is good, and it’s exciting enough for most of the duration. It gets very tiresome by the end. It’s two hours and 45 minutes.

by Anonymousreply 56July 16, 2023 3:27 PM

And, this is only Part 1? OMG, another movie we will forget before Part 2 hits the theaters.

by Anonymousreply 57July 16, 2023 3:31 PM

Mission Impossible 7 gross to date $80,003,550. (Production cost $291 million}

Sound of Freedom gross to date $85,498,581 (Production cost 14.5 million}

by Anonymousreply 58July 17, 2023 6:54 AM

(Production cost $291 million} Plus no less than $100 million ad budget

(Production cost 14.5 million} Ad budget apparently none.

I thought it was entertaining but a little too long. Tom's stunt in jumping off the mountain on a motorcycle wasn't quite as impressive as it should have been.

by Anonymousreply 60July 17, 2023 3:24 PM

Is this the movie where Tom Cruise goes into outer space?

by Anonymousreply 61July 17, 2023 3:31 PM

No that was Oblivion.

by Anonymousreply 62July 17, 2023 3:39 PM

R62 No, Tom is suppose to shoot a movie in the Space Station.
