Nate Bargatze v. John Mulaney

They are similar age. Their comedic styles couldn’t be more different.

Mulaney seems to be known for his “smart” comedy. Bargatze talks a lot about his lack of smarts.

Bargatze seems to be the much more observant comedian. Mulaney keeps reworking his childhood memories to a degree that’s disturbing.

Which do you prefer?

by Anonymousreply 29February 15, 2024 11:35 AM

I find it difficult to root for Mulaney. I’m not sure why. Surely anyone who struggles with addiction deserves our sympathy. But lately he’s just so “spoiled rich kid needs some real problems to cry about.”

by Anonymousreply 1July 9, 2023 4:52 PM

THey both miss as often as they h it.

by Anonymousreply 2July 9, 2023 5:00 PM

Bargatze reminds me of my hilarious, laconic North Carolina cousins. His comedy is very Southern.

If you are from the South, you have those quirky family members who are cracking jokes under their breath at the family get togethers.

There’s usually a slight mean streak I really enjoy.

by Anonymousreply 3July 9, 2023 5:09 PM

I'm not a huge fan of either, although I saw John Mulaney in concert a few years ago, and he was hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 4July 9, 2023 5:14 PM

I like the one who's not fat.

by Anonymousreply 5July 9, 2023 5:15 PM

Neither of them are fat. Bargatze has lost a lot of weight, and frankly doesn’t look all that healthy these days.

by Anonymousreply 6July 9, 2023 5:17 PM

I saw a Mulaney show, and he's boring. I'm sure I was supposed to laugh - he even obviously paused for people to laugh. But I just sat there, stealing looks at my watch while thinking about the cost of my ticket and wondering when we'd get the jokes that I paid for.

I haven't seen Bargatze live, but his tv special (or Netflix) was pretty funny.

by Anonymousreply 7July 9, 2023 5:28 PM

Let’s not argue, honey. They’re both funny. Just in very different ways.

by Anonymousreply 8July 9, 2023 5:37 PM

There's no argument here, unfortunately.

by Anonymousreply 9July 9, 2023 5:39 PM

John was funny before his private struggles became public.

by Anonymousreply 10July 9, 2023 5:41 PM

I liked John Mulaney so much before everything went wrong, I'm not sure I want to get to know another, apparently comparable, comedian.

by Anonymousreply 11July 9, 2023 5:42 PM

Mulaney’s much funnier

by Anonymousreply 12July 9, 2023 5:42 PM

I like both though I haven’t seen either’s most recent specials. I agree Bargatze has lost too much weight and doesn’t look healthy. Ozempic?

by Anonymousreply 13July 9, 2023 5:50 PM

I would like to know more about how Bargatze got into comedy.

All his bio materials seem to say “went to Christian school in Nashville… started his comedy career in New York.” And I’m thinking “hmmm, sounds like you skipped some things.”

by Anonymousreply 14July 9, 2023 6:09 PM

Both funny, very different styles. Mulaney is very structured, all the beats are mapped out and memorized.

Bargatze might very well be just as structured, but doesn’t come off that way. He sounds like a guy at a cookout shooting the shit off the top of his head.

by Anonymousreply 15July 9, 2023 6:12 PM

Bargatze’s father is a famous magician.

by Anonymousreply 16July 9, 2023 6:13 PM

There are still famous magicians, R16?

by Anonymousreply 17July 9, 2023 6:17 PM

I never knew magicians were such a thing! In the past couple of weeks I’ve discovered two of my friends (who don’t know each other) were amateur magicians in their younger days. Now this!

by Anonymousreply 18July 9, 2023 6:20 PM

I worked with two very good amateur magicians at a small college. They are everywhere.

by Anonymousreply 19July 9, 2023 10:13 PM

Michael Carbonaro has talked about going to a popular magician’s camp for kids when he was growing up. Most of the helpers he had on his TV show were guys he knew from the magic camp. Maybe magic camps are like theater camps for kids who can’t act.

I am rapidly falling in love with Nate. Since he lost all the weight I find him adorable. Those big puppy dog eyes make me swoon. I love his accent too. His clean humor is very refreshing, and I'm not saying I don't like the comics who work blue, but I think it shows serious talent when a comedian these days can make people laugh without resorting to filth.

I’m surprised no one has pinpointed Mulaney as Asperger’s. The wide set eyes, the meltdowns, the fake constructed persona, the repetition and strict of his routines… plus, Irish descent.

Whaty R1 said about Mulaney. It's difficult to like him because he drips 'entitled rich kid' who finds himself 'edgy' because he's been to rehab. He also likes to name drop a lot. Even before he captured major fame, he ran in the beautiful people circles. His intervention was a who's who of famous people and he can't tell the audience about it fast enough. Just don't really like the guy, though he can make me laugh from time to time... Less so lately but still...

by Anonymousreply 23February 14, 2024 5:24 PM

Mulaney has a very dark side and a very spoiled rich kid side. It’s a bit fascinating to see which side will win out at any moment.

Bargatze—while working “clean”— has a very angry streak that no one seems to pick up on. I find that interesting.

by Anonymousreply 24February 15, 2024 5:27 AM

Opoooh! R24, tell me about the mean streak in Nate!

by Anonymousreply 25February 15, 2024 6:04 AM

You know who else was always praised for ‘working clean’? Bill Cosby.

by Anonymousreply 26February 15, 2024 9:12 AM

Mulaney’s feral childhood doesn’t really square with his uptight parents’ vibe.

Was mom a drinker?

by Anonymousreply 27February 15, 2024 11:21 AM

Bargatze.

Mulaney supported one of his spoiled, rich bitch UES friends in doxxing an anonymous book reviewer who gave her shitty book a bad review on Goodreads. By dox, I mean she hired a PI who tracked down the reviewer. She not only released this person's name, but this person's image. He's talented, but I can't ever forget that he's an entitled asshole who helped bully someone.

by Anonymousreply 28February 15, 2024 11:34 AM

Bargatze had an odd look when younger. He also seemed to grow a foot taller when he lost all the weight. He is handsome, but looks older than his years.

Mulaney’s facial features completely changed after rehab. He actually has a straight vibe now. In “Kid Gorgeous,” he was giving angry coked-out queen.
