So, Another Country (1984) never became gay iconic?

They underplay the gay element in the trailer - even though gay was what it was mostly about.

Reminds me of Maurice.

The caning elements were kinky and the historical spy context was interesting. Colin Firth was great.

by Anonymousreply 4July 5, 2023 3:27 PM

Also the blond “lord” was yummy, I think.

by Anonymousreply 5July 5, 2023 3:28 PM

Ha ha!

by Anonymousreply 6July 5, 2023 3:29 PM

I seen this movie, but I don't remember the plot. I remember Colin Firth though.

I have to re-watch it this weekend!

by Anonymousreply 7July 5, 2023 3:39 PM

Young Cary Elwes was in it, yes?

Mary, why don't you look at the trailer I so meticulously linked?

I have this poster hanging in my house.

^I’ve always had a thing for sullen and petulant twinks.

What a terrible trailer.

by Anonymousreply 13July 5, 2023 4:16 PM

It’s a poor concept for a standalone film. “This handsome, dashing, charismatic gay man became a Communist at Cambridge, joined Whitehall and then betrayed his country to the Soviet Union. Let’s make a film about his public school years.”

by Anonymousreply 14July 5, 2023 4:25 PM

I disagree.

by Anonymousreply 15July 5, 2023 4:29 PM

I think I saw the original play, but I’m not sure.

by Anonymousreply 16July 5, 2023 4:30 PM

I probably didn’t see the play, since it was the first acting job for Everett and Firth plus Daniel Day Lewis and Kenneth Branagh. I’m sure I would remember better if I had seen it.

by Anonymousreply 17July 5, 2023 4:35 PM

Thanks for letting us know, R17. We were all wondering.

by Anonymousreply 18July 5, 2023 4:38 PM

It’s important to set the DL record straight.

by Anonymousreply 19July 5, 2023 4:48 PM

It was one of the first films I saw when I went away to college and it blew me away. I love everything about it, especially Cary Elwes. But there are several other hot guys in it, too, including the bad guy. The setting is amazing.

You might enjoy the BBC series Cambridge Spies from the early 2000s.

by Anonymousreply 22July 5, 2023 7:45 PM

Movies like this are no longer made.

by Anonymousreply 23June 1, 2025 8:01 PM

Rupert's "aging" makeup was ludicrously bad. Being a saucy, petulant bitch was not a stretch, acting-wise. Colin Firth stole the movie out from under him.

by Anonymousreply 24June 1, 2025 8:19 PM

I did see the original play in London many moons ago. Rupert Everett and Kenneth Branagh. It was really good (and very sexy). I saw the film when it came out and was disappointed. It didn't have the energy and raw sexuality of the play. At least it had Rupert!

I thought that all of the Cambridge spies were white.

by Anonymousreply 26June 2, 2025 6:40 PM

Supposedly Everett was a complete twat and his co-stars Elwes and Branagh wouldn't speak to him for years afterwards

by Anonymousreply 27June 2, 2025 7:13 PM

Didn't Everett become good friends with Firth, though?

by Anonymousreply 28June 2, 2025 7:19 PM

OP thinks linking is done "meticulously."

OP is 87.

by Anonymousreply 29June 2, 2025 7:23 PM

Sorry. I meant to type "meticuloosey."

by Anonymousreply 30June 2, 2025 7:23 PM

3 of the hottest British actors of that time - Everett, Firth and Elwes. For me, those were the trifecta of great looking young British leads - pre Hugh Grant, who I thought was attractive but not sexy.

I must have watched this at one point - but I can't remember much of it. The trailer is really snooze worthy.

I just read that Charles Spencer (Diana's brother) was an extra in several scenes. I always thought he was hot.
