I’ve told this story here before, but:

I’ve met her a handful of times. She’s a really lovely, gentle lady who unfortunately has a terrible problem with alcohol and prescription pills. You know how AA has the literature about an “allergy” to substances? Yeah, she’s one of those people. She damn near blew up her whole life - family, finances, etc - but I was told she got on Suboxone (surprisingly common in Hwood), reconnected with her sponsor and was doing much better. The last time I bumped into her she looked haggard but was as warm and gracious as ever. I really hope she can pull it together, if only for her daughter’s sake.

Can you imagine your life being the ability to stalk somebody in a private moment because they used to be young, beautiful and famous and you want to catch them while they are down, growing older or just plain being human? I can’t.

She must have gotten a look at Richie Sambora‘s new face.

This is so sad. Heather Locklear always seemed like an interesting and intelligent woman and a hardworking humble actress. I hope she can find her way out of her struggles.

I've posted this before, but in the 1980s I had a server friend who had Heather at his station. She was charming and chatty and asked if he was in school, and when he told her UCLA she said she'd gone there too and wanted to know all about what he was studying, etc. Left a great tip and a big thank you.

Weeks go by, and she comes back in and asks to be seated "in Jeff's station if possible." She even remembered his name. He said she was the nicest celebrity he ever served.

(Second nicest was Ed Asner. He took a chance and said "Mr. Asner, I just have to tell you ... " Asner looked grumpy until Jeff said "I admire your advocacy for working people and unions." Asner lit up and they had a great conversation.)

Well at least she is attending a meeting or getting therapy. She probably didn't want to get glammed up for that because it draws attention. She doesn't look bad at all for 61, sans makeup. In fact she looks better than Madonna does now WITH makeup, and they are close in age.

I agree that she looks pretty OK for her age. Not amazing, slightly bloated, but she looks fine.

And if you stripped other celebrities her age of their makeup and fresh hairstyles and shiny outfits, many would look worse than Heather L. In fact, younger stars without makeup look worse than she does. Even alleged knockouts like JLo or Mila Kunis, who is MUCH younger.

You do a lot of crying in therapy, sometimes. And yelling. Sometimes both. None of these things cause you to look or feel your best, right afterwards.

I think it's much harder to be a has-been, someone formerly famous for the right reasons (one's work) but now only talked about in town for the wrong reason (like having an addiction, looking, gasp!, one's age), than to never have been famous at all, like, for instance, 99.9% of the dataloungers. It must feel like being invited in Eden, having eaten of the forbidden fruit and then being thrown out for whatever reason. We never ate of the forbidden fruit, so we don't miss it.

Hitching your self esteem to fleeting youthful looks is not healthy. This causes suffering. The spirit will always seek to rise above and find deeper meaning to life but sometimes the ignorant Ego gets in the way. This causes suffering.

Women have an opportunity to move through three glorious stages of life: Maiden, Mother and Crone. You WILL suffer if you try to cling to Maiden as you age. In Heather's case, and other once was-es, she may still be hitching her worth to externals. And her soul has been saying "STOP!" For years and years.

Same with Madonna. Exactly the same fucking thing.

Until one gains the depth and mastery to expand beyond the smallness and chronic, insatiable insecurity of Ego, only way to grow is THROUGH this exact suffering. This kind of suffering is filled with lessons and information. It can, and will, lead to wisdom and freedom. It make take multiple lifetimes, but she'll get there. Right now, Heather has simply has found her growth edge and is exploring that edge.

We all have to rise about the tyranny of the petty, chronically insecure, shallow Ego one way or another.
