My vote is for Montana.

What is yours?

I also think the Montana State Capitol building is beautiful. Helena also has a lot of gorgeous architecture and Victorian buildings that are worth seeing. The capitol building in my home state of Oregon is an art deco abomination that looks like an LDS temple. The Washington State Capitol building is quite impressive in person—it's perched on a hill and there is water around it.

Posted ironically. It’s an office building. It’s the Sarah Palin of state capitols.

The most elegant one I've ever been to is, in all places, Pierre, South Dakota.

They went all out on the interior--the mosaics are just spectacular.

R2, The original old state Capitol building in Louisiana is a grand castle structure with beautiful stain glass windows and inside is glorious old world details, and it's still standing in BR overlooking the mighty Mississippi River. Anyone can Google images, since I don't know how to attach a picture, I'm too old and frail...

by Anonymousreply 19June 23, 2023 2:09 AM

I’ve been to the Connecticut state Capitol (I’m Not from there) and I have to tell you guys, it truly is the most beautiful state capitol in the country.

I posted CT upthread, but I'll also put in a good word for OH, whose statehouse is mid-19th c. Greek revival experimentalism at its funkiest, just a stack of Euclidean solids, and whose interior can be spectacular.

Richardson Romanesque Revival is not a beloved style, neither is the High 60s Modernism of Rockefeller’s Empire State Plaza -but I think together they actually create an amazing sequence that is

Damn - I hip post by accident. The NYS complex is certainly an odd mix, but I think it’s interesting, and weirdly impressive. There’s no other State Capitol like it.

You miss the point completely. The Hawaii state capitol floats in water filled with fish. Instead of a rotunda, it is open to the sky.

I've only seen a handful of capitol buildings in person.

But I will say I liked Wisconsin's the most. It seemed to fit all of its purposes in terms of being a sufficiently grand (but not too grand) building for an important institution - but it also works nicely with the space it has, and the whole square it's situated on is a great centerpiece of Madison. It becomes a grand space for the weekly farmers market. I miss that (and a few other things) about Madison.

by Anonymousreply 51June 23, 2023 4:40 PM

I was just in Austin and was in awe of their Capitol. I love CA's (as it is my state) and agreed, it does appear quite similar to DC.

But Austin (TX)'s capitol building and grounds.... are just HUGE. and beautiful. Also a lovely color. It is the biggest state capitol building.

"New York State capital. Albany, New York

It is a beautiful building. Too bad they built that God-awful monstrosity, Empire State Plaza, across the street.

Such a shithole and it's not aging well either.

by Anonymousreply 56June 23, 2023 4:52 PM

The list at R22 is kidding with Iowa being first. *rolls eyes*

by Anonymousreply 57June 23, 2023 4:53 PM

The Montana capital got a renovation about 15 years ago or so. It was restored to its former glory after a mid century modern renovation in the 1960s.

The WI capitol is lovely.

The vile pieces of Rethuglican shit that work inside, not so much.
