“Underwater robots from the vessel Horizon Arctic discovered the tail cone of the 21-foot Titan, approximately 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic on the ocean floor.
The remotely operated vehicle found additional debris from the Titan.
Paul Hankins, a salvage expert for the U.S. Navy, said five major pieces of debris were found, including the nose cone, which was outside of the pressure hull. A large debris field contained the front end bell of the pressure hull, the "first indication of a catastrophic event," he said.
OceanGate Expeditions, which owns and operated the submersible, said that all five lives ‘have sadly been lost.’”

R3 I don't think so. Sunny Hostin explained this week on 'The View' that she went over the contract passengers sign and initial - just about every paragraph of the contract says they passenger (and their survivors) understand the risk they are taking, that death is very possible, and in no way can anyone on their behalf sue the company if there is a fatality.
Joy Behar asked if there was any room for the families to wiggle in a lawsuit , and Hostin claimed it was 'airtight'. As a prosecutor, she couldn't find anything in there that would make the company responsible after the passengers signed off.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but what would have happened if the rescue mission had found the sub intact and all of the passengers alive a day or two ago? How would they ever have been able to rescue the passengers? Obviously, the pressure down there is far too great to transfer the passengers from one sub to the other. Did the would-be rescuers have some kind of flotation devices that could have been deployed to float the incapacitated sub to the surface? That doesn't seem feasible at all. I would really appreciate any sensible answers to this question, as I cannot figure it out for the life of me.

R94/R98 The vessel descended too quickly and began to crack due to its poor construction made from carbon fiber instead of one uniform titanium body. They released the ballasts to ascend, but during the ascent the vessel still imploded killing them all. Their bodies are likely in multiple pieces and if the fish haven't already eaten them, they'd still be unable to be recovered.
It was a poorly constructed and uncertified vessel born out of sheer hubris. They've been dead for days as soon as they lost contact and the principal investigators on the inside of the multi-governmental affair knew it. There was nothing they could do. Drawing out the search party was good PR for reinforcing the value of the US Coast Guard.

National Geographic had an issue dedicated to finding the ruins of the titanic which it sponsored in 1985. They’ve been documentaries about it over the years and objects from the ship in display on display I should say. There is nothing exciting or thrilling anymore about going down to see the titanic so I don’t understand why this rich riffraff paid $250,000 each to risk their lives to see something that was exciting in 1985But not today.

[quote] just about every paragraph of the contract says they passenger (and their survivors) understand the risk they are taking, that death is very possible, and in no way can anyone on their behalf sue the company if there is a fatality.
LOL That woman is an idiot. What makes you think a former prosecutor knows jackshit about contract law?
There are certain things that are implicit in any contract, that the product is not made negligently, for one. You cannot build a product that is made to transport someone from one place to another and then when it fails to do so - because of your negligent construction or maintenance - absolve yourself of any legal liability via some waiver. Many waivers of legal responsibility are found to be ineffective and thrown out during lawsuits.

R145- I agree. It was exciting and fascinating when it was first discovered. I was one who looked forward to new photos and film of the wreckage. But for years it had been decaying until now it is a creepy and depressing reminder of the loss of life and terrifying deaths of so many people. Ballard was trying to find evidence of what really caused the Titanic to sink, and he did. Whatever is left to discover? Personally I will be glad when she disappears forever.

Agree Titanic has been pillaged and dissected by lookie loos for the last 40 years. We've seen it all. It was once a beautiful and tragic vessel. But robotic video and CGI can recreate the entire experience of being onboard or at the wreck site. Some of these adrenaline junkies have dived on the wreck multiple times. What's the thrill? To squint out a dimly illuminated porthole at scrap iron? It's like paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to fuck the skeleton of Marilyn Monroe. Freaky.

I don't understand. We're told that the bodies of the sub's passengers would have been destroyed by the pressure once the structure of the submersible was breached. So how could a teacup survive? But for that matter, if the pressure is THAT great, how could even so much of the superstructure of the Titanic have survived for so long? I just don't get it.

“What kind of pressure does a submarine withstand? Thirty atmospheres (30 bar, 441 psi, 3,000 kPa) of water pressure are applied to the hull at 300 metres (1,000 feet), making it withstand another atmosphere (1 bar, 14.9 psi, 101 kPa) every 10 metres (33 feet) of depth.”

Not a stupid question at all! I’ve wondered the same thing. Turns out that because the pressure is comes simultaneously from all directions, only gases are affected; solids are not. In the case of the human body, the lungs and digestive system would be crushed but bones and muscle would not.

[quote]So how could a teacup survive? But for that matter, if the pressure is THAT great, how could even so much of the superstructure of the Titanic have survived for so long? I just don't get it.
Because the hydrostatic pressure is balanced in both the interior and exterior of the teacup. It’s like an in-ground swimming pool filled with water; the water in the pool is balanced against the hydrostatic pressure of the groundwater surrounding the exterior of the pool. The weight of the filled pool holds it in place and maintains its structural integrity. If the pool is empty and there’s a major flooding event, the concrete or fiberglass shell will crack apart or pop out ground if the groundwater pressure becomes too great (unless there’s a hydrostatic relief valve that allows groundwater to enter the pool until it’s weighted enough to stay in place.)
by Anonymous | reply 193 | June 23, 2023 7:43 AM |
^^ Also, vertebrate sea creatures mysteriously live at the depth of the titanic (and beyond). They must have a biological version of a hydrostatic pressure relief system.

The force comes from a difference in pressure. Objects like China, steel frames, rocks, etc... aren't housing internal chambers of lower pressure. The environment that was necessary to preserve human life did.

^ The same happens above the ocean surface as well. Living on the earth we are literally at the bottom of an "ocean" of air under pressure of 14.7 lbs. per sq. inch, but we have equalized internal pressure at the same rate. We notice it most when landing or taking off as our bodies catch up to pressure changes our ears "pop"

All this nonsense about suing the company to oblivion. You don't waste time suing someone who doesn't have money. This was no doubt a thinly-capitalized company, and Stockton doesn't seem like the type to "waste" money on insurance. So look for the deep pocket if there is one. His estate maybe.

r235, I feel the same. I've laughed at a lot of jokes about this, but I only really feel sorry for the son. There seems to be a lot of pressure put on Asian sons (no pun intended), I'm sure he felt like he couldn't back out of the trip despite not wanting to go.

OceanGate must have known about the implosion as soon as it happened. As was revealed by James Cameron (god bless that bastard), there are hydrophones all over the Atlantic. Did it really take 8 hours for OG to contact authorities? Were the families informed but told to keep quiet by military intel? Did the kid know his stepdad was already dead when he went to see Blink-182? So many questions.

R259- Good question. I understood that Navy personal had to confirm that what they heard was in fact the Titian sub, but why OceansGate wait eight hours to report them missing , if that is what happened? Have they given an explanation?

BORIS JOHNSON: Hamish Harding and his friends died in a cause - pushing out the frontiers of human knowledge and experience - that is typically British, and that fills me with pride. I know there will be many who will say that the adventurers were foolish, and that we need regulation against such experimental technology. But Harding and his fellows were trying to take a new step for humanity, to popularise undersea travel, to democratise the ocean floor. They knew the dangers. In the immortal words of Captain Scott, just before he died from the Antarctic cold: 'We took risks, we knew we took them; things have come out against us, and therefore we have no cause for complaint..'

I've done a little research on deaths caused by catastrophic implosion and at that depth it probably caused immediate death. Their bodies were probably crushed in a split second. Doubt they felt a thing.
by Anonymous | reply 266 | June 23, 2023 6:03 PM |
I heard on one of the many youtube videos I was watching it seems like they knew something was very wrong. They felt they were descending too quickly and were getting rid of ballast and wanted to brought back up to the surface. There is a whole lot to be looked into and their deaths were not as unknowing as people are saying. There is a lot we don't know about what these men were going through before the implosion. They could have been in a total state of terror and panic knowing things were not going as they should.

So, if I understand it correctly, their bodies would not have been crushed if they had somehow floated to the bottom of the sea. But yes, I would imagine that tremendous amount of water pressure hitting them all at once as the sub imploded would likely have torn their bodies apart instantaneously.

I understand exploration but if you had this much money to spend on this trip wouldn't you have done a little investigating first? The machine was not suitable, they weren't certified. Hold the phone on this father, some of you are being really really judgmental (I say this as someone who has worked extremely hard to excise judgment from my own mind, I struggled with it much of my life).
In his defense, the father actually trusted this company, he trusted the science, and he trusted Stockton. We already know from other released texts that Stockton was absolutely convinced that he had all the facts, that only he understood the truth, and he really believed in his sub! That is NOT a defense, I hope the remaining execs are charged and serve time, on top of getting bled dry of all their money too, and that they make a public apology to both the families, the government, and the world at large. But my point in saying all of this is just to provide more context. So this father implicitly trusted all of this, and in many ways, you could argue, why wouldn’t he? Nothing quite like this disaster has ever happened before, so it isn’t inconceivable that it was easy for the father to trust OceanGate.
Which brings us to the son. I would bet that because the father “knew” they would be safe, he actually believed he was helping to turn his son into a man. He thought his son had childish fears, and his dear ol’ dad was going to show his son that he can’t let his fears control him, that “courage is not the absence of fear, courage is acting in spite of the fear” life lesson. And in probably every other situation, the father would have been correct AND would have coached his son on a valuable life lesson. Also, some of this may be cultural too, meaning I don’t know much about Pakistani culture, but I would not be shocked if this is just how a father leads his son into manhood. I am also 100% certain the father saw a beautiful poetry in doing this with his son on Father’s Day; again, that is not a defense of poor judgment, it is simply an explanation of how a complex disaster like this can actually happen. Context, context, context.
The person who should be receiving much much more of your venom is Stockton. Think about it! James Cameron said today that Stockton actually had multiple leaders/executives within the industry writing him letters, telling him that if he wants to play with unproven technology, go for it, but do NOT allow passengers on an experimental vessel in a commercial setting because there *will* be an accident and then you are going to destroy the entire industry when that happens — and that man refused to listen!!!!
I fucking hate the DailyFail, but the interview with Cameron today was pretty incredible. Cameron said that everyone inside the industry KNEW what must have happened on Sunday, and that our government knew as well, and allowed the bullshit oxygen stories to circulate to cover their asses on our national security and military capabilities, which had indeed heard the fucking implosion!! But I can’t blame the government either, I’m GLAD they didn’t use this shitshow to announce to the planet that they are always listening in the ocean. Our military leaders absolutely made the right call here, they knew it would come out, and it was NOT their job to announce it, they stayed in their own lane as they should.
And lay off Greg too, I adore him you whores. If you don’t like him, fuck off to another thread you bullies.

He convinced himself and then sold his bullshit to others. And then they died. People need to do research. Ask questions. Then wait. Don't be rushed or forced to make a decision. Step back and observe first. I even do the research and questions with my doctors. I never just assume people know what they're doing. I watch everything. And it is not exhausting. Playing devil's advocate here -- and I mean that almost literally -- some people have pointed out that no similar catastrophe of a submarine imploding in the depths of the ocean has ever happened before, and in fact, the Titan vessel itself made two successful previous trips to the Titanic wreckage site. I'm not saying I would ever have gotten in the thing, even if I could easily afford it, because quite the opposite: I wouldn't have made the trip even if they paid ME a million dollars. I'm just pointing out how it's possible that some people might think the risk was relatively low considering the realities of the excursion.

British actor Ross Kemp had planned to visit the Titanic on the OceanGate submersible for a TV show:
[quote] Mr Kemp's agent at InterTalent, professor Jonathan Shalit, said the production company had carried out checks on the OceanGate submersible, but had deemed it unsafe. "They found other sub dives which have been safe and successful but, by that point, Ross was so busy with all his TV shows that he was unable to commit the time," he said. "I am just relieved not to have had my post note in history as the agent who killed Ross Kemp."

by Anonymous | reply 374 | June 24, 2023 2:16 PM |
[bold] GREG’S RECIPE FOR THE MOST DELICIOUS & CLASSIC COLESLAW [/bold]
[bold] INGREDIENTS [/bold]
¼ head (about 1 pound) green cabbage
2 carrots
⅓ cup of good mayonnaise (I prefer Hellman’s or Blue Plate)
⅓ cup sour cream
1 Tablespoon cider vinegar
1 Tablespoon sugar
½ teaspoon celery seed
¼ teaspoon kosher salt
⅛ teaspoon pepper
+++
[bold] PROCEDURE [/bold]
1. Shred cabbage not long, thin ribbons, or how ever you prefer. Grate carrots and combine with cabbage in a large bowl.
2. In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sour cream, vinegar, sugar, celery seed, salt, and pepper. Add dressing to cabbage mixture, and toss to combine.
3. Serve immediately or chill in the refrigerator.
I hope you like this very classic recipe for this traditional summertime accompaniment.

I think Greg is quite polite, takes a lot of shit and deals with it with good humor and grace, and he has some good, if not exactly exotic, recipes.
Regarding the legal parts of this, the waiver that they all signed can be voided if obtained by misrepresentation or fraud. That is one basis on which the waiver can be found void ab initio. Moreover, the most one-sided waivers have a clause that defends and indemnifies the other party for negligent and intentional acts. Depending on the jurisdiction, which will be contested, most waivers for intentional acts are deemed unconscionable as a matter of equity (not law) and criminal acts are even less likely to be waived.
Finally, there is already a criminal investigation underway. There are likely to be criminal charges within weeks, if not days. That co-owner is looking at prison time and he thinks his money is going to save him. It won't. The public needs its blood.

Cameron has made dives in submersibles, and been down to the Titanic more than 30 times. He certainly understands the technology, the materials, the architecture, the risks, etc. and he said that the materials used to construct the sub had been used before and didn't work. The guy used them anyway. And each time that submersible went down, and came back up, it degraded. cracks, etc. By the last attempt it was literally ready to fall apart. Yes, the passengers knew. They got some kind of warning and probably were trying to go back up when it imploded. I also recall someone saying that they went down too fast and it portended of trouble.

by Anonymous | reply 430 | June 27, 2023 5:43 PM |
R430 I agree, but I also think one of our problems is that we all visualize the James Cameron version of the sinking. I was watching a good You Tube video the other night about how it actually sunk, and the guy said there was absolutely no moon, a clear cloudless sky with a lot of stars, but depending where you were seated on the lifeboats and where the life boat was as it sank, you might not have seem anything more than a dark shadowy outline of the ship once all the lights went out.

By the way, CQD was the outmoded way of saying SOS. It had changed recently in 1912, and the operator on the Titanic used both. They used CQD because they are letters that would never be next to each other in any words.

by Anonymous | reply 438 | June 28, 2023 2:35 AM |
R432, that was really powerful. I was thinking. That one ship, the Carpathia, was about 50 knots away but could only go 15 knots an hour so it took 4 hours and the other ship was also close, about 58 knots away , I think it was the Californian? But it seems like it didn't get involved inthe rescue.
Watching the elderly man describe his experience was really chilling too. He still had nightmares. It's interesting to me that we had all these notions about how it happened, etc. and it wasn't until 1985 when they first dove to the wreckage, that they realized the ship broke apart before it sunk. James Cameron's movie was good about showing us how it really happened. How the ice berg sort of punctured the ship like a can opener, tore a hole into it, and once the water level rose it was doomed. I still can't get over how fast it went down.
by Anonymous | reply 439 | June 28, 2023 2:06 PM |
The operators on the Olympic were such idiots. At 1:27 AM they send, "Are you steering to meet us?" I don't know how Jack Phillips didn't send back, "BITCH I HAVE BEEN TYPING CQD SOS WE ARE SINKING FOR A FUCKING HOUR YOU POS."

Are you people fucking kidding me? Maybe not in the initial stages of the tragedy, but as things began to get more and more desperate, there must have been tremendous panic, screaming, and crying all around her. Wouldn't even a "little girl" understand that meant there was something TERRIBLY wrong? But also, you're wrong about her age -- she clearly says she was 16. So I'm sticking with my theory that she was mentally retarded.

I don't know why I'm engaging, but again, she was 16, had never been on an ocean liner before (or any boat, for all we know), and was off the boat at least an hour before it finally sank all the way. When the first lifeboats were being loaded, I don't think many of the passengers understood the true gravity of the situation -- much less this girl.
by Anonymous | reply 448 | June 28, 2023 3:54 PM |
I don't know why you're engaging either, R448, since you're obviously as mentally challenged as that woman must have been.
What she said in the interview was that SHE DIDN'T REALIZE THE GRAVITY OF THE SITUATION UNTIL AFTER SHE ARRIVED IN NEW YORK. So, even if it was so dark that the people in the lifeboats couldn't see the Titanic sink, obviously they would have realized it was gone after the sun came up. At least some of the other people in the lifeboat must have realized that there had been a tremendous tragedy and loss of life, and they must have been reacting accordingly. And on top of all that, there must have been discussion of the tragedy on the Carpathia during its trip to New York.
by Anonymous | reply 449 | June 28, 2023 4:11 PM |
There was a substantial period after the ship sank where people in the water were screaming, witnesses reported on the trauma of that. Yet this girl missed it all.

Apparently. And, incredible as this may seems, R448 (etc.) finds it perfectly reasonable that this mentally challenged woman didn't understand that anything went wrong with the Titanic's voyage until after she got to New York on the Carpathia. Which only goes to prove that, no matter how ridiculous, insane, bizarre, and stupid a statement may be, there will always be some people defending and justifying it online.

None of that means the woman was mentally challenged, BTW.

I realize the rowers in the lifeboat would have rowed some distance away from the Titanic to avoid being sucked into the water when the ship finally sank, but.....just how far away do you think they rowed? Far enough so that no one in the lifeboat could hear all that screaming from hundreds of people freezing to death in the sub-frigid water? Even if that was the case, I can't believe at least some of the people in the lifeboat wouldn't have realized the degree of the tragedy and that their loved ones were probably dead. And even if THAT was the case, there MUST have been some discussion of the horrendous tragedy and great loss of life on the Carpathia. Yet somehow, that stupid woman said she didn't realize anything terrible had happened until after the Carpathia docked in New York.

Perhaps there was a certain amount of "Hush, don't frighten the poor child" happening in the lifeboat.
Because like I said, someone on the first few lifeboats could easily miss all the real horrors. They wouldn't have been part of the panic on the ship, and wouldn't have been surrounded by a sea of corpses. And as the horizon is only about 2 miles away at sea level, and the lifeboat would have had about 2 hours to make distance from the wreck, it's not clear what would have been visible or audible to people sitting in a lifeboat.

A lot of those immigrants were really living rough lives…many of them had never seen a toilet before…and didn’t know that food was cooked on a stove even…I can totally understand their ignorance at the time. To them, these liners were the best thing that they ever saw…plentiful food and tasty too, if not gourmet like in first or second class.

Sorry, I'm sticking to my opinion that no 16-year-old human being could be that stupid unless they are developmentally disabled. As you apparently are.

Why on earth would the rowers of that lifeboat ever have rowed so far away from the ship that they would have missed all the horrors? And what the hell does the distance of the horizon have to do with anything?

That may be true, but that's not remotely how she described her reaction. She said she had no idea anything was wrong until she got to New York. If she had been in shock during the experience, don't you think she would have at least realized that afterwards?
by Anonymous | reply 475 | June 29, 2023 4:49 AM |
While I sense the "She was mentally retarded!!!" poster is trolling at this point, it's remarkable that some people have such trouble imagining that others have had vastly different life experiences than their own, and may in turn react in remarkably diverse ways to the same event.
by Anonymous | reply 476 | June 29, 2023 4:52 AM |
R442 spht! What! 16? Oh I thought more like 6 or 10.
16? And she thought the boat was supposed to crack in half and half the people were supposed to die in the water? Maybe she thought, oh this is just what happens SOMETIMES but a 16 year old should know some things.
Time doesn't matter. Laura Ingalls Wilder was out rocking the buggy with Almanzo on the prairie in the 1880s. She was a teen mom and they had to have a quick wedding.
Best believe she wouldn't have thought it's all part of the experience. 'Ships are just a sailing and crashing all the time. That's how it is.' Dumb.

[quote]It's remarkable that some people have such trouble imagining that others have had vastly different life experiences than their own, and may in turn react in remarkably diverse ways to the same event.
I have no trouble imagining that, BUT.....there are limits. And being able to understand how a 16-year-old girl would have thought it normal to be hustled into a lifeboat from an ocean liner, then TO WATCH THE TITANIC SINK and then to be floating on the ocean in that lifeboat for two hour or more, and then to be somehow lifted onto another ship to take her and the others in the lifeboat to New York would be part of the normal experience of a voyage is beyond my limit
By the way, for those above who argued "We don't know how much she was able to see from the lifeboat," I just watched the video of the interview again and, yes, SHE DEFINITELY SAYS SHE WATCHED THE SHIP SINK. But somehow she STILL says she didn't realize anything was wrong until she got to New York, although she does admit "I thought it was a hard way to get there." To me, that signals mental retardation. And the people here who are commenting on her words without watching the video and paying attention to what she actually said have their own issues.
by Anonymous | reply 479 | June 29, 2023 5:11 AM |
She wasn't stupid or anything R451 and other misinformed queens.
The first boats were filled with first class passangers ONLY, AND they were less than HALF FULL.
A Lot of passangers went back inside after living their accomodations, because they WERE NOT told that the ship was going to sink.
On the contrary, a lot of them were told that that was a temporary evacuation for a deep inspection and that they would probably return to the ship for the breakfast. I guess only in the last 40 or 50 minutes people truly realized what was about to happen.
A survivor who had also survived a car crash in late 1911, and died in 1975 when she was a 96 year old late was the one who told these details, I forgot her name, but she lost trunks and trunks full of jewelry, claiming that the sinking made her poor for a few years.

Maybe what she meant was that she didn't realize until she got to NYC that so many died. She was in a life boat, she saw other lifeboats, she may have assumed everyone got out., not realizing so many died.

R482, no need for me to wish for YOU to stick your head in a gas oven. Instead, all I need wish for you is that you book a cruise on a luxury liner and that it hits an iceberg and sinks, in which case you will go to your death because, like the mentally handicapped woman in that Titanic video, you'll think it's "all part of the experience" with "no danger" involved, so you probably won't even bother to get into a life boat.

She wasno R492, I have already EXPLAINED that the passenger were LIED to, and didn't know how severe the situation really until some 30 minutes before the complete sinking.
It didn't happen like in the James Cameron movie.
by Anonymous | reply 499 | June 30, 2023 6:03 AM |
R499, I thought the Cameron movie showed that pretty accurately. Remember Rose's mother telling Trudy she would have some tea "when they returned?" Many of them thought the ship had some minor mechanical mishap and this exercise was precautionary. They even had the orchestra playing "to avoid panic. " The one thing we did not see in the Cameron movie was the darkness. The videos I've watched said there was no moon and the sea was dead calm. So the further away the boats got from the ship all they saw was a shadowy form, especially once the lights when out.
I don't know why we have seized on this old woman's comments to argue about it all. She clearly was not a good source. Not worth any discussion really. She was a waste of time for the videographer. The old man was much better.

I agree with you that she was a waste of time for the videographer/interviewer, because she clearly was mentally ill or stupid, and/or her memories were highly confused at the very least. Her comments are worth discussion only in that they're so bizarre -- for example, she first says she didn't realize anything was wrong until she got to New York (on the Carpathia), but later, in response to a query from the interviewer/videographer, SHE DEFINITELY CONFIRMS THAT SHE WATCHED THE SHIP SINK. This last little bit of info sees to be something that many of you are missing or ignoring, for whatever reason.
And yes, the old man's interview is far more worthwhile and very compelling.

by Anonymous | reply 503 | June 30, 2023 3:47 PM |
Yes r503, sad. I read the Charles Pellogrino book that said she held her sons as tightly as she could when they jumped from the sinking ship but the suction or whatever pulled them from her grasp.
by Anonymous | reply 504 | June 30, 2023 7:12 PM |
Cameron cribbed a lot of Titanic from A Night to Remember. I mean I guess that's how it really happened by historical accounts but after seeing the older, first film it reaygives you the sense he phoned in the story so he do his 33rd excursions down to play explorer.
by Anonymous | reply 505 | July 1, 2023 3:16 AM |
A Night To Remember is based on Walter Lord's account, which includes a lot of detail Cameron omitted. The movie is free on YouTube (see link).
by Anonymous | reply 506 | July 1, 2023 6:13 AM |
Yes, R505 I noticed that too. I read Walter Lord's book years ago, and have see the movie dozens of times. Leo even sort of resembled young Robert Wagner.
by Anonymous | reply 507 | July 1, 2023 1:02 PM |
As mentioned here on Datalounge r505, more than once, the screenplay was the movie’s weakest link. Fortunately the cast was able to rise above the deficiencies of the script. Except for Billy Zane who acted like Snidely Whiplash.
by Anonymous | reply 508 | July 1, 2023 1:25 PM |
I liked Billy Zane. His hammy entitled, arrogant POS bastard was perfect. Where I thought the movie went off the rails is when he grabbed his bodyguard's gun and started shooting and chasing Rose and Jack. Cameron took that subplot to an absurd level. I get it. Zane's character was obsessed with Rose, possessive and abusive. But the fucking ship was sinking.
by Anonymous | reply 509 | July 2, 2023 3:39 PM |
The movie was on late at night the other day, and I saw the beginning again after many years... and the first thing that struck me was that Billy Zane looked like an off-duty drag queen, with his overplucked brows and heavy mascara.
And my second was that Kate Winslet was indeed a dish back in the day, but damn! That girl walked like a truck driver! No grace in her walk, and a girl in her social position would have been taught to walk gracefully, and punished until the lessons were learned.

The 1979 telefilm S.O.S. TITANIC had a great screenplay but it was done in by low rent special effects.

by Anonymous | reply 512 | July 5, 2023 12:02 AM |
R509 - crazy as it sounds, the first cut of the film extended the shooting much further than that. There's a long scene in which Lovejoy pursues Jack & Rose with a gun. It's utterly pointless, considering they're on the literal TITANIC in the early hours of 15 April. You don't need a gunman to put the characters in danger, FFS!
by Anonymous | reply 513 | July 5, 2023 10:46 AM |
It's always been amazing to me that no one prevailed on Cameron to cut the entire pursuit of Jack and Rose by the Billy Zane character with a gun. I mean, that would be beyond idiotic EVEN IF the ship weren't seeking. Was the Billy Zane character REALLY going to shoot and kill someone on a ship at sea, with no means of escape?

At least there was no rape scene like in the terrible 1996 miniseries. Tim Curry’s character rapes a young Scandinavian girl-right before the ship strikes the iceberg. I’m sure that it was meant to be symbolic but it was lurid and cheap, and surprisingly explicit for a US network telefilm.

Yeah, that miniseries was better than the Cameron film in some ways but just as awful, if not worse, in others. Really, what kind of idiot screenwriter thinks the story of the Titanic needs any more drama grafted onto it?
by Anonymous | reply 517 | July 5, 2023 7:38 PM |
r514 Cameron spoke about how much he loved Billy Zane, more than most of the other cast members. You can tell by how much screen time he got. There is really no better explanation of why that scene remained. His character added desperately needed dimension to the movie. I don't need restate how bad some of the dialogue and acting was.
Cameron being a visual nerd also used that state dining room scene with the clinking dishes and carts rolling out of control to make viewers feel the suspense and desperation of the sinking. That was brilliant.

I don’t understand why Cameron allowed Molly Brown get put in her place by that crew member. That never happened. IRL, Brown threatened to pitch him overboard and he left her alone after that.

Kathy BAtes was a much better Molly Brown than Debbie Reynolds.
by Anonymous | reply 520 | July 6, 2023 12:52 AM |
Yes, Kathy Bates was excellent, she was perfect as the plain-spoken woman from humble origins. And IMHO she gave the best performance in the movie, for what that's worth.
I suspect that Cameron is a bit like George Lucas, just more interested in the technology of filmmaking than working with actors. I mean Cameron isn't as bad as Lucas, who is known as "The Worst Actor's Director Alive", but still. It may be more than coincidence that the best performance in the film is given by an experienced pro who doesn't need to lean on a director.
