Massachusetts

Opinion on this state as a whole? Not just Boston.

by Anonymousreply 160September 26, 2023 7:45 PM

Mass-holes. They think their shit doesn’t smell

by Anonymousreply 1June 18, 2023 1:40 AM

In Massachusetts all seems to breathe freedom and peace, and to make one forget the world and its sad turmoils.

by Anonymousreply 2June 18, 2023 1:40 AM

Western Mass is the Bestern Mass

by Anonymousreply 3June 18, 2023 1:45 AM

Western Mass is really beautiful. When I was in college I went home with a friend who was from the western Boston suburb of Concord. We drove out to see her brother at Amherst College and hung out in Amherst and Northampton. We took I-90 out there and drove Route 2 back. It was very pretty and quaint.

by Anonymousreply 4June 18, 2023 1:45 AM

It has important historical landmarks, great colleges and universities, beaches, forests, and it was the only state in which McGovern beat Nixon in the 1972 presidential election.

by Anonymousreply 5June 18, 2023 1:50 AM

Beautiful well maintained educated relatively wealthy progressive with great historic towns. You’re lucky if you grow up there. But it’s expensive. And the cold - both weather and people - is unavoidable.

by Anonymousreply 6June 18, 2023 1:56 AM

Commas,

by Anonymousreply 7June 18, 2023 1:57 AM

Echoing, R6, it is "cold" - people and weather, but I like that Mass is its own very specific thing. Definitely not for everyone - at least living - but I'd think most people would enjoy a visit - whether Boston, greater Mass, or both.

by Anonymousreply 8June 18, 2023 2:00 AM

I’ve been to eastern mass. It’s gorgeous! Historic. Gloucester is exactly like the postcards. The rocky cliffs against the ocean is paradise. Having a meal on the water is so charming and cozy. The people have a freckled ruggedness to them. They are a sturdy people. They would more than likely ignore you than be rude.

I have never been to the west side but it looks really nice on the online maps. I’ll definitely make that trip, thanks r 4

by Anonymousreply 9June 18, 2023 2:03 AM

It’s a beautiful place one month of the year.

by Anonymousreply 10June 18, 2023 2:04 AM

R9 I should clarify I was there during a nice month.

by Anonymousreply 11June 18, 2023 2:10 AM

are those mountains on the western side or just trees?

by Anonymousreply 12June 18, 2023 2:11 AM

Massholes for sure. Went to college there. GTFO after graduating. Never been back.

by Anonymousreply 13June 18, 2023 2:13 AM

No love for Central Mass?!!

I grew up there, and when my husband and I go back we like to play the game “Shack, Dump or Eyesore” with the various houses, outbuildings, and abandoned retail establishments.

by Anonymousreply 14June 18, 2023 2:17 AM

by Anonymousreply 15June 18, 2023 2:17 AM

Goddamnit I didn’t mean to post twice

And it’s mostly Dumps where I grew up

by Anonymousreply 16June 18, 2023 2:18 AM

What is considered central? I cited Northampton and Amherst as western Mass, but there's further west like Williamstown (Williams College) and Pittsfield.

by Anonymousreply 17June 18, 2023 2:23 AM

As a seacoast NH resident- I am very grateful for Mass as they have the jobs and I have worked out of Mass for almost 20 years- my entire career.

I have never been able to find a living wage in New Hampshire-

and Massachusetts folks have been good to me throughout my life. (When I was a little kid we had moved from NY to NH and my neighbors in this little hick town were from Canton Massachusetts AND KNEW WHAT WAS UP- I was very lucky to have them in my life for 6 years)

Love Mass.

(Lived in Boston- back bay from 2007-2010 in my late 20's- it was an EXPERIENCE- and a really great experience- but I am not a Boston fan -at all now-

by Anonymousreply 18June 18, 2023 2:46 AM

I’ve lived in Mass for 13 years. It’s a good place to live, except for the harsh winters. Great education and healthcare. Charming towns and a ton of history. Housing is expensive. A Dunkin’ Donuts about every 500 feet.

by Anonymousreply 19June 18, 2023 3:02 AM

R17, the Worcester area is Central

by Anonymousreply 20June 18, 2023 3:06 AM

Only stay for Harvard or MIT otherwise leave.

by Anonymousreply 21June 18, 2023 3:08 AM

Born and grew up in Boston. Still live there. Great city.

by Anonymousreply 22June 18, 2023 4:07 AM

Bullshit R21 You're so clueless, mate. Massachusetts might be the best place to live in the US right now. We have a very, very high quality of life here and people are flocking in droves. Houses cannot stay on the shelves, we can barely keep them in stock.

The Amherst/Northampton/Easthampton/South Hadley/Shelburne Falls/Leverett/Shutesbury area i.e. Western Mass, is a radically wholesome, pleasant, beautiful and fun area to live in.

That's where I live. It's an amazing bubble. There's art, culture, incredible schools, cool, educated people. People who've done the Big City thing and want something cozy, safe and healthy now. There are great community events happening constantly throughout the year: plays, concerts, festivals, art walks, farmers markets, antique markets, Christmas markets, lectures, film screenings, museum talks, it's an embarrassment of riches. It's the Five College Consortium here - Amherst College, Smith, Mount Holyoke, UMASS and Hampshire, so there's five campuses' worth of events plus general happenings in every town, all within a very small radius.

There's a gazillion farms, so you have farm stands and CSAs like crazy, and loads of farm-to-table dining options.

A zillion amazing trails and forests, lakes, mountains and state parks. Sculpture parks. Botanical gardens.

Black Francis of the Pixies and J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. both live here and I see both of them and their kids all the time just walking around. I used to live around the corner from Kim Gordon. Lloyd Cole of Lloyd Cole and the Commotions lives up the road. There's tons of music of every genre happening all the time. Tons of great indie bands and good studios, too.

Scads of filmmakers, artisans, crafts. World-class antiquing at the Brimfield Fair three/four times a year. Old Deerfield and Old Sturbridge Village or magical Salem, MA for ye olde 1700s aesthetics. Extra fun at Halloween and Christmastime - picture postcard magical.

We're drowning in wellness here, whether yoga is your thing or Buddhist meditation groups or acupuncture or massage or cranial sacral, or just plain old talk therapy - western mass teems with therapists and healers galore

The Peace Pagoda - An amazing Buddhist landmark and community. A wonderful place to spend an hour or three.

A little further west is the Berkshires with all of the skiing and zip lining and tubing you could ever dream of.

A bit beyond our bubble? Another bubble: Woodstock, the Hudson Valley and the Catskills. And then there's NYC with all of its riches.

And 90 minutes east of us in Western Mass is Boston, with everything that is constantly happening there in the theater district, Back Bay, North End for the best food and in Cambridge for endless activities, concerts, shopping and events. And then Logan Airport, your gateway to Europe and the rest of the world.

A mere 45 minutes north is Vermont and New Hampshire. New Haven, Connecticut is 1.5 hrs south of me and has the whole Yale scene, which is lively. Tons of good bands come through the music hall there as well. Bradley Airport in Hartford is 50 minutes away.

Cape Cod is its own whole world and deserves its own thread because within that sphere there are a thousand variations of the Cape Cod experience. Marblehead, too, is a cant-miss coastal Mass destination.

Concord is a wonderland. Walden Pond is just outside of Concord. And down the street from that? The Gropius House, built by Walter Gropius, one of the founders of the Bauhaus art school. And near all that? Nathanial Hawthorne's house. The backyard of which was where the "Shot Heard Round The World" was fired.

I could go on and on. There's so much history in Massachusetts, so many olde houses and villages, historical art and architecture and cool stories, it'd make your head explode.

Massachusetts is fucking brilliant.

by Anonymousreply 23June 18, 2023 4:21 AM

At least in Boston, winters are not as "harsh" as most not from here think. At least in recent decades. (Worcester 45 miles west and some or most other parts of the state do get much colder with more snow, yes.). Cape Cod including Provincetown, and the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket don't get much snow.

We very rarely have snow on the ground in downtown Boston, whether two feet or two inches, on Christmas day or any part of December or even New Year's!

And when we have snow before Christmas, it usually melts before Christmas. It's too warm most Decembers to keep snow for long.

Yeah it sometimes snows a few inches in November, some years, but doesn't stay long.

Most of the winter, most years, has no snow on the ground... or very little. It gets in the 49s, 50s and 60s throughout winter, most years. More often than below zero or single digits! Surprised, huh?

In downtown Boston. the overnight low rarely dips below 20, very rarely below 10 and so rarely below 5 or below zero. But it is windy often, so though actual temps aren't brutal too often, even 20 degrees at 5 am is brutal when the wind is 20 mph. But again, usually several days in all winter months we not only hut 40 degrees but 50 and 60 plus.

Those big blizzards and big dumpings are rare....that's why it makes national news. We average about 40-45 inches of snow yearly. In 2916 or so, it was 108 inches or so, a record. Most was after the first week of January, and compressed into five weeks or so. Some years we get 85 inches, sometimes only 20 inches. We are not Syracuse which averages about 96 inches of snow!

Our average daytime highs are between 37 and 40+ in all winter months! Surprise, surprise, huh?

Summary:. It is not continuous winter from November to April here! We are not below zero for weeks or months straighten with two feet of snow always on the ground!

But yes, when it does get cold and the wind is whipping, then yes, that day or days are brutal -- but it doesn't last long at least in the past decades.

by Anonymousreply 24June 18, 2023 5:07 AM

R23/R24 You're a nut. No one is reading all that. Only white people from MA care to extoll the purported virtues of their lackluster state. Academics notwithstanding, MA is not a global player like NY & CA.

Fact is, there's no reason to bother with MA outside of Harvard, MIT, and maybe a brief visit to our colonial history. Without those three elements and social programs for the poor, the state wouldn't matter. Nearby NYC eclipses it in every way.

The winters suck and the people are largely ugly, fat, and unfriendly. It's a racist, neoliberal Get Out landscape that prefers to advance whites & Asians above other ethnic groups. Brown people are expected to be the help and engage in performative diversity. Trashy, racist Irish people abound as do the homeless population cluttering up Boston & Cambridge.

Don't let the blue fool you, racism is alive and well in MA.

by Anonymousreply 25June 18, 2023 5:22 AM

Worcester is grim.

by Anonymousreply 26June 18, 2023 5:25 AM

Um, have you been to the west side of the state, R25? Sounds like you have a vendetta against Boston. It's nothing like you describe here on the west side.

by Anonymousreply 27June 18, 2023 5:25 AM

R27 No one cares about Western MA except the people stuck there. It's all boarding schools and hiking paths anyway.

by Anonymousreply 28June 18, 2023 5:29 AM

I lived in various locations between Worcester and Boston for three years in the '80s and '90s. The accent gets annoying ("gawker blocker" rhymes), there's a lot of "my shit don't stink" attitude, but then 1270 in Worcester was fun.

by Anonymousreply 29June 18, 2023 5:30 AM

Oh, and DiRocco's near the N.H. border was fun.

by Anonymousreply 30June 18, 2023 5:30 AM

MA is filled with a bunch of haughty townies with a ridiculous peasant accent.

by Anonymousreply 31June 18, 2023 5:32 AM

Only in your shitty amateurish rejected screenplay, R28/R31.

by Anonymousreply 32June 18, 2023 5:36 AM

R32 No one cares about trying to make a movie in MA. They have NY, CA, & GA for that. Ben Affleck & Matt Damon are not enough. Most of the films shot on location in MA end up being duds.

by Anonymousreply 33June 18, 2023 5:41 AM

Lived there for a few years. Western Mass is beautiful. Educated, accepting. One of the first states to legalize same sex marriage. Culture, good food, independent shops, beautiful homes. Keep going central, north, east, it’s Massholes everywhere, racism, obnoxious accents, gentrification, but still, good schools, shops, restaurants.

by Anonymousreply 34June 18, 2023 5:45 AM

Five years ago I met someone from the Noth Shawr on a beach in Mexico. I'm a native San Franciscan. It's been a bicoastal relationship. He just retired and will be moving in with me permanently in nine days(!) He'd lived here for 15 years, so he knows what he's in for.

I've visited him back three times a year. He's come out here five times a year. While I consider New England to be my second home, I could not live there permanently because of the extreme seasons, especially Winter. Autumn is mindbogglingly beautiful, but it only lasts five minutes. In SF the weather is usually shitty year round (fog, wind) but at least it's predictable. I've learned to deal with the wicked accents but not the shoveling the car out of snow and ice part. Or the 15 minutes to get dressed just to go out to the mail box part. And the food. And what they do to it.

Also, their Sun is totally fucked up. The Sun is supposed to SET over the ocean, not rise over it. Makes me nauseous. I've called to complain to management so many times, but they do nothing. These lazy people don't answer the phone after 2:00pm. And you can't get a burrito or decent Chinese food in Massachusetts.

That said, I wish we could afford to keep his place and stay in Massachusetts part of the year after I retire. We'll see.

by Anonymousreply 35June 18, 2023 7:33 AM

Can someone talk more about the mountains there. Are they treacherous? Is it the whole western side? It’s very hard to tell on the online maps.

by Anonymousreply 36June 18, 2023 8:15 PM

They're not jagged peaked mountains, but more accessible low mountains - a lot feel more large foothill-ish. So they're great for recreation - skiing, hiking, mountain biking. The highest peak is about 3500 feet, so nothing is crazy-high. And they make for stunning scenery.

by Anonymousreply 37June 18, 2023 8:20 PM

It’s a little greedy with the consonants but otherwise nice.

by Anonymousreply 38June 18, 2023 8:25 PM

As opposed to Mississippi. Try spelling that with one of those sticker letter kits. Good luck!

by Anonymousreply 39June 18, 2023 8:31 PM

Speaking of which, can we start a Mississippi thread? I think I’m blocked by too many people now to start a thread. They die on the vine.

by Anonymousreply 40June 18, 2023 8:32 PM

Things haven’t been the same since Al Bruno got shot.

by Anonymousreply 41June 18, 2023 8:36 PM

[quote] it was the only state in which McGovern beat Nixon in the 1972 presidential election.

And yet it went for Reagan in 1984 and 1988.

by Anonymousreply 42June 18, 2023 8:39 PM

Are there any Americans left on here? Or is it all foreign bots.

by Anonymousreply 43June 19, 2023 12:56 AM

Massachusetts is great. It will always be my home. But if you really want some experience, I suggest Manchester, NH. Fights start at that McDonalds around 10pm. After that, I usually pick up a sixer and head straight for Mia “Damned if ya do, Damned if ya don’t “ DeMarco’s place for a tutorial on eating potato salad out of a pussy. Good times.

by Anonymousreply 44June 19, 2023 2:15 PM

Bump for classic American datalounge thread. Calling all Americans.

by Anonymousreply 45June 19, 2023 7:44 PM

by Anonymousreply 46June 19, 2023 7:50 PM

R46, why did you bump a thread with the prior reply only six minutes before yours?

by Anonymousreply 47June 19, 2023 7:51 PM

R47 we are being flooded with all kinds of spam you got to take some action and push back or just hand it over to the trolls already.

by Anonymousreply 48June 19, 2023 7:56 PM

At least this is a legit thread.

Enough! Of the troll threads already.

by Anonymousreply 49June 19, 2023 7:57 PM

Eating swans? REALLY?????

by Anonymousreply 50June 19, 2023 7:58 PM

What is PTown like in the winter? Is it empty? Sounds like it’s the warmest place in the area for winter.

by Anonymousreply 51June 19, 2023 8:04 PM

R25, yes, spot on and thanks for putting it aptly. Lived 4 years total in Boston--enough time to decide. Like you, count me as a hard pass.

by Anonymousreply 52June 20, 2023 12:22 AM

No skin in the game - but I like MA. I could live there. Not someplace I dream of living - like CA - but a nice happy medium of things. And it is nice to live in a civilized solidly Dem society.

by Anonymousreply 53June 20, 2023 12:54 AM

I grew up in the Boston area and summered on Cape Cod, so I assumed that all of Massachusetts was similar. Ended up going to college in Worcester. BIG MISTAKE.

We used to say, "If the world ever needed an enema, they'd put it in through Worcester."

by Anonymousreply 54June 20, 2023 1:31 AM

R54, that town needs an enema!

by Anonymousreply 55June 20, 2023 1:37 AM

R53, the catch is that Masshole dems are limo liberals, for the most part. Bloated with sanctimony and a barely disguised contempt for those they purport to have a heart for.

by Anonymousreply 56June 23, 2023 12:15 AM

Clueless.

by Anonymousreply 57June 23, 2023 1:45 AM

The only people who like MA are the white people from MA. It's a boring state for boring people.

The winters alone are enough to keep people away to say nothing of the fat townies who smoke, drink, and live their lives according to whatever sports team is playing.

Smart people attached to Harvard/MIT/Partners and the poor people who need healthcare coverage and assistance through government agencies are the only other general, non-native groups for whom MA is useful. Anyone looking to play on a global stage needs to live either in NYC, CA, or D.C.

by Anonymousreply 58June 23, 2023 1:58 AM

[quote] Smart people attached to Harvard/MIT/Partners

Who or what is Partners?

by Anonymousreply 59June 23, 2023 2:03 AM

R59 Mass General Brigham formerly called Partners HealthCare. It was founded by the two major teaching hospitals connected to Harvard Medical School. In MA, all roads lead back to Harvard.

Harvard, The American Revolution (Boston Tea Party), and MIT are the only reasons why MA matters.

by Anonymousreply 62June 23, 2023 2:15 AM

by Anonymousreply 64June 23, 2023 2:20 AM

Massachusetts sucks. Unfriendly, boring, distant people. Super expensive housing. Freezing cold, ice, dark early.

by Anonymousreply 65June 23, 2023 2:58 AM

Aggressive, idiotic drivers on narrow confusing streets. Trains stop at midnight. No black people. No one dances at concerts, etc. Parking tickets constant @ $40/each.

by Anonymousreply 66June 23, 2023 3:02 AM

Sorry to bump this old thread and I know the OP said no Boston, but I was hoping someone would tell me what the difference is between Beacon Street and Beacon Hill?

Also, is Beacon Street anywhere near the theater district there?

by Anonymousreply 67July 9, 2023 12:47 PM

I hated Boston when I was in college in the 1970s. Absolutely no comparison to New York on any level. I even liked Philly and D C better.

by Anonymousreply 68July 9, 2023 1:25 PM

R41 Whaddhaa you mean? It hasn’t been the same since Tony Ravosa died.

And Tony wasn’t the same since that time he shot himself in the foot.

by Anonymousreply 69July 9, 2023 1:34 PM

"Concord is a wonderland. Walden Pond is just outside of Concord."

I just discovered Concord - friends moved there from NYC - and wow it's ridiculously quaint. We went to Walden Pond in October and I watched these hot daddies swim their laps amidst gorgeous, shimmering foliage and just swooned HA. Granted, it's expensive as hell but it is a fabulous place to visit.

I love Western Mass. More than likely my husband and I will retire somewhere around there - maybe West Stockbridge. Though Northampton is appealing as well.

All that said, I'm not the biggest Boston fan. The food there is terrible. The whole vibe of that city just feels off. And Cape Cod is kinda gross now. Too fucking expensive. We go to Spain and eat and drink like kings for less than what a week in Ptown costs.

by Anonymousreply 70July 9, 2023 1:36 PM

LITTLE WOMEN takes place in Concord, Mass.

by Anonymousreply 71July 9, 2023 1:50 PM

I like the way it manages to be south of New Hampshire and north of Connecticut at the same time all while bordering Rhode Island.

by Anonymousreply 72July 9, 2023 1:56 PM

"Black Francis of the Pixies and J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. both live here."

Thanks for the warning.

by Anonymousreply 73July 9, 2023 2:07 PM

The weather absolutely sucks. So far this year we haven’t had decent summer weather although yesterday was nice. It’s overcast again today and will probably rain later. The winters start around late October and stretch to as late as June, which is what happened this year. There are only 2 seasons, winter and summer with the former sucking up three quarters of the year. It’s humid as hell too when it gets hot.

by Anonymousreply 74July 9, 2023 2:08 PM

I grew up in Boston area spent summers on the cape and now live in Western Mass. MA is definitely its own world. Boston is crowded and while tons of universities, etc. it is provincial. The state is incredibly liberal - lots of pride flags everywhere - but does have quite a share of white trash and good dose of MAGA. Winters used to be incredibly harsh throughout the state but over the last few years the eastern part of the state not so bad though Boston got slammed in 2015/2016. Berskhires are gorgeous in the summer and fall. Winter is tough and runs Nov-April.

by Anonymousreply 75July 9, 2023 2:30 PM

I live at the other end of the cape than Ptown and it certainly has lots of MAGAs who are locals, have never left the state (maybe Orlando) and mostly driven by deep racism - not wanting anyone but them to get a penny of their state taxes. There are a few pockets of transplants from NYC and other liberal cities but it's always blue when it comes to politics. Yeah as someone upthread said, the summer weather has sucked so far this year. Lots of grey rainy days.

by Anonymousreply 76July 9, 2023 3:38 PM

That weather isn't unique to Massachusetts. It's been like that all up and down the eastern seaboard. I'm out in Orient NY for the summer (tippy end of the north fork/Long Island) and it's been gross, overcast, brutal humidity, etc.

by Anonymousreply 77July 9, 2023 3:43 PM

To answer R67, it depends on what end of Beacon Street you're talking about. It's very long but there's a subway that runs the length. Lower Beacon Street is the area called Back Bay which is similar to Beacon Hill - just not on a hill. The beginning of Beacon Street is in the theater district.

by Anonymousreply 78July 9, 2023 3:44 PM

Speaking of Massachusetts and Mississippi, the area North of Quabbin is the Mississippi of Massachusetts. (There’s a lot of cheap housing stock, most of it in desperate need of a makeover and the foliage is pretty so maybe it will get gentrified at some point.)

I am telling you now so I do not need to tell you then - You have not truly lived if you have never been to Wendell old home day.

by Anonymousreply 79July 9, 2023 4:15 PM

R79/EL: Then indeed I have truly lived. Wendell was briefly the site of a pleasant if hazy episode in my much earlier life. The scenery is gorgeous but it is so far from almost everything - both a blessing and sometimes a curse.

Just guessing but a recent ride out Route 2 wasn't encouraging. Leominster, Fitchburg, Gardner and beyond look so rough, making me wonder if gentrification will ever get there.

by Anonymousreply 80July 9, 2023 5:24 PM

Massachusetts is weird - they're state and local pride is really over the top. The 'why would i ever leave?' mentality is thick. It's a really insular and provincial way of thinking.

Texas is #1 in this category, but Mass is a close 2nd or 3rd.

The accent is awful and people are at the same time standoffish/reserved AND loud and in your face. It's this bizarre hair-trigger - I've never seen people lose their shit more aggressively and often than Massholes.

That being said, it's still one of the top 10 states without a doubt and is far, far better than majority of this cesspool of boring, flat, stupid cousin-fuckers we call states.

by Anonymousreply 83July 9, 2023 5:39 PM

Oh those places have no charm and they are too far East R80 to be North of Quabbin.

So happy to find someone on DL who has experienced the charms of whacky Wendell.

by Anonymousreply 84July 9, 2023 5:41 PM

R78 Beacon Street starts at the top (unsurprisingly) of Beacon Hill, not the Theater District. One Beacon Street is next to the State House, the building with the golden dome.

They are east, R84, and if they were less soul-suckingly awful people there might have some money for weekend getaways in Wendell.

by Anonymousreply 85July 9, 2023 5:47 PM

Is Beacon Street within Beacon Hill, which has often been described as one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the country.

by Anonymousreply 86July 9, 2023 6:04 PM

It's weird how it's such a politically progressive state but the people are so reserved and standoffish.

by Anonymousreply 87July 9, 2023 6:11 PM

For years I have been hearing much of the NYC bear community rave about Provincetown, what a wonderful place it is, etc. It's funny but none of them ever seem to go there except in July for Bear Week or in October for Spooky Bear. I guess it's only a magical place one week and one weekend a year when a bunch of fat guys are there looking to mate.

by Anonymousreply 88July 9, 2023 6:21 PM

The restaurants, R88, wait with (wide) open arms for Bear Week. Most say it's the best week of the summer for them.

by Anonymousreply 89July 9, 2023 6:30 PM

What is Bear Week?

Is it anything like Shark Week?

by Anonymousreply 90July 9, 2023 6:33 PM

Yes R85, you're right. I was thinking of Boylston Street which begins at Tremont. Beacon St. is a walk thru the park.

by Anonymousreply 91July 9, 2023 6:33 PM

Get off of DL, R90. You don't belong here and you add nothing.

by Anonymousreply 93July 9, 2023 7:20 PM

R87 why? Intelligent people generally skew towards introversion. I am an introvert and I don’t like meeting new people or going to pubic events.

by Anonymousreply 94July 9, 2023 7:42 PM

R88 - you'll find that a lot of Bears will go to places during 'their weeks' - Puerto Vallarta, PTown, Wilton Manors, etc. Part of it is because of the community obviously.

BUT I think the other part of it is so they feel comfortable around other fat people and are the norm. 250 lbs and want to wear a speedo? It's applauded in Bear Week. Unthinkable at any other time.

Bears get this undue reputation as being so open and accommodating and it's a big lie.

Ptown is 10x better than Fire Island - without a question. And don't get me started on the stupid Russian River bullshit that SF goes on about. It's literally nothing but a river and a couple of tiny towns with 1 gay bar.

Russian River for gays is a ridiculously underwhelming experience.

by Anonymousreply 95July 9, 2023 9:49 PM

r7 types bitter. Rejected by Daddy? Couldn't get fucked at any Bear event, anywhere?

by Anonymousreply 96July 10, 2023 4:46 AM

R95, don't gaslight us. Palm Springs is a bigger gay resort than all the others COMBINED.

by Anonymousreply 97July 10, 2023 5:27 AM

Self-important massholes, plus it snows.

by Anonymousreply 98July 10, 2023 7:46 AM

Poor route 2 getting washed out.

by Anonymousreply 103July 25, 2023 11:44 PM

ElderLez, oh no! I think that's the pretty Northern MA one I've taken a few times to get from the Nawth Shawr to get to pictureskew Brattleboro, VT with my partner to visit a distant relative. You cross the French King Bridge. I call it "Two West" in my NorCal accent or "The Two Freeway" in my SoCal accent to piss off the locals (i.e. my partner). It being washed out saddens me so.

by Anonymousreply 104July 26, 2023 5:19 AM

It is. This is the second time it’s been closed in the past week because of damage from storms, but this time it’s due to bridge integrity near Gill so actually it might be the French King that has a problem.

(Thinking of it as a Freeway is funny.)

by Anonymousreply 105July 26, 2023 9:49 AM

No fun for Holyoke today.

by Anonymousreply 106September 22, 2023 9:42 PM

Of course Gawker and Blocker rhyme. How could they not?

by Anonymousreply 107September 22, 2023 9:50 PM

I've never been to Massachusetts, what do you expect me to say?

by Anonymousreply 108September 22, 2023 9:57 PM

I lived there for a long time, but it never felt like home. If you arent from there you will never fully belong there. I spent some of my childhood and young adult years in a beautiful old pastoral affluent town outside Boston but somehow I just got the vibe that people looked down on our family—I never got that vibe in any of the other places we lived, all equally or moreso affluent (NY and CA).

My school friend’s family had a summer house on the Vineyard. I went a few times but although I loved the island the people were more snobby than friendly. I guess it’s called Chilmark for a reason bc i definitely felt the chill.

Massachusetts: The smartest state in the nation.

by Anonymousreply 110September 22, 2023 10:11 PM

Isn't Massachusetts known as having some of the highest taxes in the country?

by Anonymousreply 111September 22, 2023 10:15 PM

I hear that. We moved to a small town when I was 5 and I think my family are considered outsiders almost 50 years later. OTOH I live on Lawn Guyland now where one can immediately be a local.

My freshman year roommate at BU was from Concord and I HATED him.

His father voted for Goldwater in '64. Roomie was very happy when cunt Thatcher became PM in 1979.

His roommate sophomore year, about whom he used to bitch, punched him and broke his nose on the last day of school. He didn't come back the third year.

Last I checked (and the only time) he was a facilities manager somewhere.

The suburbs north of Boston, Essex County, are idyllic.

Beverly, MA was the inspiration for Beverly Hills, CA.

The best state in the U.S.

by Anonymousreply 118September 23, 2023 2:03 AM

I’ve visited family there a few times. I think every part of the state I’ve seen is breathtaking. I do y know what the people or economy is like but it’s beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 119September 23, 2023 2:05 AM

by Anonymousreply 120September 23, 2023 2:19 AM

Rhode Island is neither a rhode nor an island.

by Anonymousreply 122September 23, 2023 2:29 AM

I was a DECcie living along 495 in the late 80s and early 90s; I always liked the area and I love the drive along Route 2 all the way to the N.Y. border.

Thanks r128, I hope to be back in the Boston area (was in Concord for 3 months two autumns ago) next year. The food (esp seafood) is pretty stellar there. I loved my local crew- they were hella funny and kind, although most of the people in the film industry that work there are not loyal (they would book, then ghost for another job).

by Anonymousreply 129September 23, 2023 2:03 PM

That entire part of the country is beautiful

R129- Did you shoot Little Women or Julia, possibly?

No, r131. It was BAREBACK BAY 12: WHORECHESTER INVASION

by Anonymousreply 132September 23, 2023 2:39 PM

Boston has great Chinese food.

If you say "Come with me off to Massachusetts"

Then to Massachusetts we will go

We will buy dishes there

Maybe even two sets

Buy the finest china

Then we'll dine a

While on crepe suzettes

We will build model boats off in Massachusetts

There in Massachusetts by the bay

Put them together and wait until the glue sets

While we wait we'll polka

For the folk

Along the parapets!

Off to Massachusetts

Yes, we're off to where the shops are sweet

We will play minuets

Off in Massachusetts

Boston, Massachusetts, Beacon Street!

r131, it was Salem's Lot, which that Bastard Zazlev is holding on to. I was losing people to Hocus Pocus 2, which was filming in Rhode Island.

by Anonymousreply 135September 23, 2023 2:57 PM

R117 is nuts. The bean fields were BH stands took their name from Beverly Farms, but in no was BH inspired by anything in Mass. Once the streets were laid out, the inspiration was the Côte d’Azur.

by Anonymousreply 136September 23, 2023 3:22 PM

R136 . . .

“Beverly Hills, CA gets its name from Beverly Farms, an oceanside community within the city of Beverly, Mass. Burton Green, who owned the Rodeo Land and Water Company in the early 20th century, came up with the name as he recalled his happier years in Beverly Farms.”

IF they're so smart why did they elect a crook like Romney governor?

by Anonymousreply 142September 23, 2023 5:35 PM

R139 types cunty.

by Anonymousreply 143September 23, 2023 5:40 PM

R142 His D opponent that year, Shannon O'Brien, was flakier than him. More recently - in fact, until last week - she was the (appointed) head of the state's Cannabis Control Commission who has been suspended for some odd behavior around disclosing the parental leave/resignation of one of her colleagues who, last I read, says he's not resigning.

It happens now and then. Bill Weld was elected governor as was Charlie Baker, both RINOs. With the overhelming numbers like the Ds have in the state legislature, it's good to have somebody who can put their foot on the fiscal brakes occasionally.

by Anonymousreply 144September 23, 2023 5:44 PM

Take a deep breath R143…you missed you mark.

by Anonymousreply 145September 23, 2023 5:45 PM

by Anonymousreply 149September 23, 2023 10:01 PM

Each of the different parts of the state has strong feeling about the others. Western Mass abhors the coastal industrial cities, Boston people disdain every place except the Vineyard, Nantucket and Cape Cod; Cape Cod and the South Coast hate Boston people, Worcester does not want to be confused with Springfield and the entire state wishes that Springfield would become part of another state.

by Anonymousreply 150September 24, 2023 3:48 PM

Incidentally, MASSACHUSETTS (6.9 million) has a greater population than LIBYA (6.7 million), EL SALVADOR (6.3 million), DENMARK (5.8 million), FINLAND (5.5 million), NORWAY (5.4 million), NEW ZEALAND (5.1 million), or IRELAND (5 million).

by Anonymousreply 151September 24, 2023 4:14 PM

by Anonymousreply 152September 24, 2023 4:16 PM
